across the island and here in the bay area. good morning, it is saturda august 12. i am gloria rodriguez. you will get to the latest in maui but let's look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. lisa: good morning to you. we have a warm up on the way and we have been advertising that but it is not for the entire bay area. seri of low pressure to the south and west of us will keep our marine layer with us through the next several days and that will keep fog present and cooler temperatures at the coast. live doppler 7, there is dense fog at the shoreline and sea surface temperatures are up a little bit, why we are so mild right now. yesterday morning, succeed to oakland, 58 fremont, and a look outside, became for this morning, the fog over the bridges, very dense. by 9:00, we are well into the 60's. a coastal fog lingers and we are in 80's by noon and look at that, 81 around the bayshore by

the afternoon with 90's arriving inland and comfortable at the shoreline. gloria? gloria: thank you. developing to maui, the death toll the catastrophic wildfires is at 80. authorities believe the number will go up as cruise search for more victims. more hawaii authorities announced the new number last night and another fire sparked on the west side of the island. the fire is 100% contained. it did prompt more evacuations. the other fire that ravaged the popular town of lahaina is 80% controlled. we are learning this morning the state of hawaii misjudged the wildfire dangers and some residents say they had to wait another week or so to see if any of their items can be recovered from their homes. >> police won't let us go into our home. we live in the same house for 50 years, since 1971. i wanted to go down there.

and see if anything is left. you know? but they won't let us. >> as firefighters work around the clock to put those flames out, fire victims are scrambling to get the resources they need to live. melissa don talks to those working hard to help in the relief effort. >> cars filing one by one down route 30, the only road into historic lahaina. residents allowed to now return to their homes to see if anything is left. mark and michelle are among those who lost their home. they tell me they are lucky they got out alive. >> we were window and see we ran for our lives. >> the 62-year-old so she was forced to jump into the ocean to escape the flames. >> we have nowhere to go.

>> h associated press there are no emergency management records indicating maui's warning, sirens activated tuesday in the fires began. the fire chief was asked about the alerts. >> our department is not responsible for that. the choir left so quickly from where it started in the russian moved into the neighborhood, communications on who make those notifications are physically and nearly impossible. >> hawaii's attorney general says there will be a review of critical decision-making and standing policies before, during, and after wildfires. the lack of power and internet is making finding those missing more difficult as many as 1000 people are still unaccounted for. >> i am one of thousands of people, one of thousands. we need help. >> the family who i spoke with said they were traveling back to see their home and they tell me

this is the second time their home burned down. the first time, he wildfire destroyed it during hurricane lane in 2018. fema is now providing federal assistance. melissa don, abc news, maui. gloria: the fire wiped out much of lahaina, devastating hundreds of businesses in the tourist area. one business is a shop with a wine made their core, art, and frames. abc7news spoke with the owner who said he is focused on rebuilding. >> as a leader, i have been focused on getting involved and we need to look forward as hard as that is right now and they are building next to this building, right on the right-hand side of it. that is a cement building so it is still there and gone. the impacts are so wide-ranging

and we make things on an island with 150 employees. this was our number one retail store. $130,000 last month with salaries across the whole company. and we are just one small piece of the pie, so you can imagine to your point the thousands of people so we need to focus forward. governors, the government has been great. as fast as we can get over this, we look forward. gloria: happening today, the annual bay area aloha festival returns to san mateo. this year's event will have a different tone as most of the eventer have ties to they will also be there to collect donations of airline miles for victims. one vendor says this year's event will be more important than past years events.

>> the islands are beautiful, and it could not -- it is just unbelievable when we see it. but they need all of the help they can get. >> for this happening at the specific time with what is going on back home, it really brings us together, to help each other. gloria: doors open at 10:00 today at the event center and it will go on until 5:00 p.m. the efforts around the bay area don't stop there. a hawaii native is working with volunteers at san francisco zion to raise awareness about the impact of wildfires on the island. he is selling a hawaiian dish to raise funds for victims and says hawaii is close to his heart. >> it is not just about the food of course, it is ultimately about raising the awareness so not just it feels like those in hawaii are going to those tragedies but we has a community, a global community,

even in the united states in california can show support. gloria: he is selling each one for around two dollars and will deliver them to your home. to order he says you have to searcher him on facebook and send him a message. a lot of people want to know what they can do to help. you can go to abc7news.com.com and find a list of fundraisers, charities, and verified nonprofits all helping the people of hawaii recover from the wildfires. the san francisco fired apartment is weighing in on the debate of self driving cars in the city. this comes after the cpuc voted thursday to allow taxi companies like cruise and we mow to expand the services across the city 20 47. san francisco fire released a statement saying the fire department strongly disagrees with the cpuc decision, the ruling ignoring public safety and emergency response interference. these incidents are not going away and are in fact increasing. it goes on to say it would work

trying to get in and out across the city or outside so maybe not , outside lands is enough. >> other say the extra countries would bring in much needed money to the city. >> hundreds and hundreds of jobs for our theatrical and state workers, we've got restaurant tours. it is good for business in the sunset and richmond. >> and it is not just the city that would benefit says some residence. paul brennan says he things the whole neighborhood would get a boost from the cash. that is why for him, the pros outweigh the cons. >> i think there might be even more interest in the neighborhood, general folks or come here for the show might think they want to buy or rent as well. >> tim johns, abc 7 news. gloria: one thing to know, organizers say the tent closed yesterday because of safety concerns and outside lands a spokesperson confirms that the flooring needs repairing.

>> a superior court judge denied the district attorney's office request to block new evidence from the public in the police texting scandal. the da will have to turn over more unveiled racist text messages, from a -- officers in the tech scandal. the judge said there were no legal reasons to protect the messages. according to recent court documents, the da found 200 when he five more pages of racist text. this was a key decision made in the case. >> this ruling shows it is critical there be public disclosure of this information that officers who engaged in the racist text messaging and sent these should have on full display their conduct. >> some civil rights attorneys have also requested a federal oversight in the police department. in the south bay, the san jose

we will have sunshine into the afternoon today and more so into sunday. as we look at live doppler 7, still monitoring this feature to the south of us, an area of low pressure that is really going to keep the low clouds and fog situated along the coast until this once to get out of town. also allowing for showers and thunderstorms in the sierra nevada. otherwise, a warming trend really getting going with above average temperatures in our inland valleys today. the north bay, far in the north bay, inland valleys in the east bay, we will feel the difference today. and the next several days. here's a look at the fog, very dense from parts of the bridge there and we will be looking at that threat for an hour. 59 in sunnyvale, 60 in campbell, so we are looking at slightly warmer temperatures around the bay this morning. 57 santa rosa, 50 eight napa. a look outside, our roof camera

will be gray when the sun comes up later on but partly sunny skies, san francisco advertiser upper 60's. we had that yesterday and may be a few degrees of warming around the bayshore today but more significant warming tomorrow. the dense coastal fog, a warming trend mainly inland for the weekend and then the hottest days to be around tuesday. we will have several days of triple digit heat in our inland valleys but we are also watching the system to the south. we get into sunshine throughout the day, the fog is at the coast, but notice some of the higher clouds through the overnight hours. this is your early morning sunday and we continue to see those high clouds as we get into later on sunday. still, the high pressure ridge building in and allowing for the warmth to really be felt into sunday. highs will be mid-90's for you by the delta, low 90's here, into the mid-70's around the bay

so comfortable but hayward in the 80's. that is a warm day, fremont 87, san jose upper 70's. cloverdale, clear lake, already above 100 degrees. look at monday, more heat heads our way and, as we get into tuesday, this should be the warmest day, 105 by the delta. notice numbers are lasting into the middle of next week with 70 in san francisco. as for today, mostly sunny, high clouds at times, 93 in livermore. that is above average. upper 70's for you on the peninsula, maybe around 80 redwood city, 90 morgan hill, and outside land in the 60's, partly sunny with mid-60's with a mix of sun and clouds for your sunday afternoon. the warming trend, little today and more so for sunday and then look at monday, tuesday, wednesday. if you're inland, if you have the pool or air conditioning, around the bayshore around 80 but we are staying nice at the

for san leandro, 60 three in hayward and temperatures today a little warmer around the bayshore, real warmth coming from inland valleys as the area of high pressure builds in. you can see there is plenty of fog so we will not see the warming trend widespread. through the next couple hours, 1:00 in the afternoon, mid and upper 80's in our inland valleys but upper 60's to mid 70's around the bay and fog will stay at the coast. our show clearing in the afternoon but late today even 90's arriving inland. we will talk about how much warmer it will get an looks like we will see the heat last through the middle of next week. gloria? gloria: thank you. developing news out of lahaina, caravans filled with donations are on the way to help people stranded. behind me you can see there are many people in their cars lining up to get the resources they need. volunteers from the hungry heroes hawaii organized and distributed items at the

lahaina gateway parking lot. they brought gas, toothbrushes, baby food, and diapers. some volunteers said there were a lot of desperate and frustrated people when they arrived to drop off the donations. >> none of the residents are getting what they need to. and they do not have transportation, so this was a really big problem because they cannot get to the shelters. gloria: in the meantime, utility crews are working on infrastructure as more people had into the area to help out. two newlyweds from santa rosa are telling abc7news a scary story about their honeymoon in paradise, which did not go as planned. the wildfires forced them to detour and evacuate. reporter cornell bernard tell us how the fire them calm. >> days after newlyweds courtney frazier and marcus tied the knot

on a marin county beach, the couple was off to maui for their dream honeymoon. which was anything but. >> we went from planning the perfect honeymoon to planning how to actually escape from the fires. >> once this couple arrived at their hotel monday, the weather quickly changed. >> the winds were crazy. i remember seeing like some the chairs were starting to blow over. >> courtney says tuesday evening the wildfires began, smoke and flames seen from the couples patio. >> there was no communications. >> the power failed and cell phones did not work. >> there was not any food at the hotel because of no power. >> they stood in line for hours at this grocery store getting food and ice but the couples has living through the 2017 north bay wildfires taught them to be calm and vigilance. >> honestly we, from being

the strong winds, we slept in the hotel lobby, taking shifts. >> then they made a choice to head to the airport in the rental car but with lahaina in flames, the main road was closed. >> luckily we grabbed a map from the hotel so we followed it the other way. >> we took the back road everyone told us not to take. it was a very scary road. >> they made it and got a flight with honolulu where they spoke with us from the airport but with no return flights available to the bay area they flew back to maui where the tsa line was long. courtney says a small price to pay after maui families suffered unimaginable loss and tragedy. >> our hearts go out to the people of lahaina, the families that lost their homes, the families of the people that lost their lives. >> cornell bernard, abc7news. >> there are many stories coming

out of the maui fires. we gathered them together in one place, on the abc 7 bay area app available wherever you stream. today, former president donald trump and florida governor ron desantis be in iowa for the state fair. the two leading republican candidates are not expected to cross paths but will highlight the states busiest day in politics. lower pulling candidates brought their campaign to the iowa state fairgrounds including former vice president mike pence and conservative talk radio host larry. gloria: new developments i hunter biden probe. merrick garland appointed a special counsel. david weiss will take the position. weiss is the u.s. attorney in delaware who has been looking into the financial and business dealings of president joe biden's son. he was charged with failing to pay more than 200,000 dollars of taxes in 2017 and 2018 and

illegally owning a gun at a time when he was addicted to drugs. biden was expected to plead guilty to two misdemeanors to avoid jail time but the deal with the justice department fell through last month. we now know some of the limits being placed on former president donald trump in connection to his election interference trial. a federal judge overs first hearing in the case in washington, d.c.. she invoked a ruling in warning, the judge issued a protective order barring trump and his attorneys from publicly sharing sensitive information turned over by special -- special counsel investigators. she also said the case would advance at a normal pace if inflammatory stamens were made and she would move more quo quiy to a trial to preserve a fair trial. trump is plead not guilty to charges in the case. as summertime ends and kids go back to school, the bay area is facing another covid surge.

sea lions. looks like they are sleep. we will check in on your forecast later. if you have an old iphone, you could be getting money back from apple. i phones six and seven model owners will get cash back after judge ruled in their favor. a class-action lawsuit centers around the phone's unexplained shutoffs in 2015. the lawsuit claims apple software updates secretly throttled the divides to cut the number of shutdowns. apple agreed to pay up to $500 million to resolve the lawsuit which leads to about $65 for each claim. wildlife officials confirm a bacterial disease was found in two birds. the disease is called avian botulism and is raising concerns about potential die offs during fall bird migration. crews are working to remove dead and ill birds. the lake was once the largest freshwater lake west of the mississippi river.

the last avian botulism event killed about 30,000 birds in 1983. researchers are putting out a call to action to save coral reefs. they say recent climate impacts spark efforts from florida to san francisco to rescue the threat species. researchers are bringing the coral reefs to onshore nurseries and they are putting on small nesting platforms that operate as anchor reefs to help grow out. the goal is to introduce coral back into damaged habitats and help survive extreme conditions. experts say the rapid rise in the ocean temperatures have been destroying the species. >> it's happening faster than we expected, so it is really a call to action. we know the things we have to do. gloria: coral reefs are an important part of the ecosystem, protecting coastlines from storms and erosion. let's get a check of your

otherwise the warming trend getting going, particularly tomorrow but today you will notice inland. we are talking about at least five days of above average, may be more than that, and the inland valley -- more than that in the inland valley. this trend lasts longer than what we have seen in the past. circulation to the south of us, keeping the fog along the coast so only partials sunshine there and then looking at maybe higher clouds from time to time as they move off the city era nevada. scattered thunderstorms around 50 and this is sunday. really stuck in this pattern for several days until about maybe thursday next week. if you like it warm, check it out, it will be particularly hot in livermore. upper 80's the average high today, going into low 90's, and look at the warmth. monday -- tuesday looks to be the warmest day with triple digits hanging on wednesday, above average thursday, and by next friday, subtle cooling.
