in the united states. that number is expected to go up. 85 people tragically died when the campfire tore through butte county. the flames have destroyed 1700 buildings, many of them homes. nine boats sank in the harbor. residents were allowed to return today and saw the devastation firsthand. melissa don is following the developing story on maui. reporter: those raging wildfires are now hawaii's deadliest natural disaster in the states history. tuesday, the flames torched several areas on the island. and police described how she survived spending more than four hours in the water. >> i climbed over the seawall into the ocean. while the fire was happening and the cars were exploding, we would duck into the water. reporter: residents returning to find their homes reduced to piles of ash and rubble.

more than 2200 structures damaged or destroyed. more than 85% were residential. hundreds and hundreds of cars are lined up, waiting for that opportunity to go back to their community. it's been four days and they are waiting a grim journey to see what's left of their homes. >> they won't let us get through. reporter: officials opened one route into west maui for residents who must show proof of residence. we saw many people turned away. the state attorney general has announced a comprehensive review of malley's evacuation policies including systems for notifying residents to get out during emergencies, notifications many here say they never received. >> no alarms or warnings. it blew up in a matter of 10 minutes. if i didn't have the ac on, i wouldn't be here right now. reporter: many expressing the frustration they have with

officials and the response to the fires. >> if you didn't know how to get out of town or you were stuck in that traffic, you were subject to the whims of the fire. there was nobody there to help you. reporter: new video shows what happened to the town cooler. nothing but concrete columns left at this home. melissa don, abc news. zach: a bay area nonprofit is lending a helping hand. the group held the donation drive today at antioch's multi--- cultural festival. they were founded to be able to serve during difficult times in their support will reach wildfire victims. the tragedy hits close to home. >> we are doing this because our families have been effective -- effective. we have close connections with people in maui. we have to do something. >> i have some family members that are affected by this on the island. we want to be able to give back to the community and make a

difference. zach: collection efforts will continue tomorrow in union city. you can find out more online. a beloved festival capturing the spirit of hawaii returns to the peninsula this weekend with relief efforts and prayers focused on the people of maui. cornell barnard was at the festival in san mateo where he met many people with connections to the island. ♪ reporter: a band of players dedicating a song to the people of maui, a show of solidarity. this year's festival, a celebration of violent heritage, is taking on a new vibe and mission. >> it reminds me of the hurricane back in 1991. we got together to help the people. we have to rise up to the occasion now and help them out again. >> i knew that some of you may have been affected, family and

friends in maui. reporter: that was too true. most everyone we found at the festival has a personal connection to the firestorm tragedy including eve from san jose. >> we have a friend who died. he died. he got burned. reporter: lorna is worried about her college roommates family, forced to evacuate. >> they are in the shelters unfortunately. the fire was in their backyard. so they had to take shelter in their sons school. reporter: the hawaii community foundation is collecting donations. >> i saw on the ne disaster it was. they need help. reporter: hawaiian airlines asking customers to donate. >> trying to donate our miles, everything we can. our hearts are with the hawaiian islands. anything we can do would be great to help. reporter: the spirit of the

islands remains steadfast at this festival, reflected in food and dance. >> hawaii is like our adopted city. reporter: jose grew up on no one who. he returned from matt -- return from maui status before the fire started. he says the community is hurting but help is on the way. >> give love back. this was very special today. everybody is banding together to help out. reporter: the help continues. hawaiian airlines telling us that in the past few days, 10,000 hawaiian airlines customers have dared -- donated their miles to help with relief. the festival returning here for the first time since 2019. this weekend, so many people wanting to help out. cornell barnard, abc7news. zach: metallica donated 200 thousand dollars to the wildfire relief effort. they are known for their philanthropy through it's all

within my hands charity foundation. they donated $100,000 to help with the 2017 wildfires that hit the north bay. help. you can go to abc 7.com where you will find a list of fundraisers, charities, and nonprofits that are helping the people of hawaii recover from the wildfires. in the north bay marin county officials say accidental overdoses are the leading cause of death for residents 55 and younger. the health department launched a new campaign to try to tackle the public health crisis. seven out of 10 overdose deaths involve fentanyl. health officials continue to raise awareness about narcan, a substance that can save an overdose victims life. new details on a flight scare that happened in december. a report by the national transportation safety board says a miss communication between

pilots because the plane -- caused the plane to nosedive. it plunged after the captain called for an adjustment to the flap settings. he asked for it to be set from 20 to five. the copilot told investigators he thought the captain asked for 15. this cause the plane to nosedive. the pilots shifted into recovery mode and got back on track. in the east bay, community members got their last chance to tell oakland leaders what's important to them in the search for the next police chief. the city held its last two public forms today. community members want the focus to be on public safety. oakland has been without a chief since february. an independent investigation found he failed to hold some of his officers accountable for misconduct. a consulting firm has been chosen to help pick the next chief. the recommendation is expected by november. there is an importunate trend playing out in the tahoe area. the alarming number of bears

needs projects like driverless car's to showcase what can be done. critics argue the technology isn't ready. some of the strongest opposition comes from san francisco police and fire. friday, one day after getting approval, video shows a driverless car interfering in a fire response. the professor argues most of the problems require a software fix. with rapid advancements in ai, it's best to learn as they go. >> they know about the problems. the public is reporting those problems. now it's on the part of the company. they have to be fast to solve those problems. reporter: the professor says there will be a learning curve with the public but his concern is that the technology will outpace regulations. in the example of the emergency vehicle brought -- blocked by your driverless car, who is responsible? >> in some cases, is it the company? the caller who wrote that algorithm?

$19 million on hotels, food, and entertainment. those figures don't even come close to the economic impact of a super bowl, that pulled in 240 million for santa clara county back in 2016. new 11:00, an alarming trend in the tahoe area. it's not uncommon for people to encounter bears but tonight, it's happening more and more often on roadways with deadly results. here's during handle. >> we don't know what to do other than plead with our visitors and our residents. reporter: a plea from the people looking for tacos bears. and is the director of the bear league. >> run -- drive slowly. watch for wildlife. know that they are there and have to cross the road. reporter: crossing the road has become deadly. 20 bears have been struck and killed by vehicles in the past five weeks. another seven seriously injured. >> we should only have four or five.

i dread to think what's going to happen when october comes. reporter: that's when the bears become more active in preparation for winter. >> when they are beefing up on calories and foraging 20 hours a day. that's normally when we would see these numbers. reporter: she says it's happening way too soon, worried for the estimated 300 bears in the region. >> what's going to happen when november comes? will we have 100 bears in a few days that are killed or hit or wounded or injured? reporter: you see a mother bear trying to rally her cubs after one of them was hit by a car in south lake tahoe. >> it's really hard for all of us that are responding to these calls. sheriffs, police, department of wildlife. it's really hard to take it in. reporter: reminding drivers, no matter the time of day or night, be on the lookout for bear crossings. their livelihoods depend on it. >> they deserve to come to the

lake is much as we do. they fish, they go for crawdads, they go swimming. they have to be able to do this. reporter: tara campbell, abc 7 news. zach: gray wolves are making a comeback to -- in california. a new pack has been found into lumley county. officials think the new pack may be its descendants. gray wolves are endangered and they were hunted to extinction in california 100 years ago. wolves have been wandering back into the state over the past decade. there are now three known wolf packs in the state. very interesting. amazing that we can get that video. spencer: they are all over the place. several packs of them have been spotted. there are more than we have seen. it's a matter of concern. i hope they like the weather though. zach: i definitely did. spencer: we've had a nice weekend. it's not even over yet. we have another warm day

tomorrow. earlier this evening, we had a verily -- fairly permanent marine layer along the coast. now there is activity over here in the sierra foothills. showers and thundershowers developing. right now on our coastline, we have very little in the way of a late-night developing marine layer. very little in the way of wind at the surface right now. pretty calm. most locations showing wind speeds under 10 miles per hour. not much to focus on with hour temperature change. five to nine degrees warmer than it was at this time last night. we are in a warming trend which kicked off today and will last for several days. clear evening over san francisco. 60 in oakland. mid 60's in mountain view. 63 at palo alto. 57 at half moon bay. at the golden gate, there isn't really fog yet.

we expect some to develop overnight. 60 degrees in santa rosa. 59 in novato. 68 in fairfield. really warm in concord and livermore. 71 degrees. here's the view from emeryville. clear conditions and traffic flowing smoothly. marine layer will develop overnight. a thin one. low clouds, fog, drizzle near the coastline. some of it will spill over onto land areas near the coast. triple digit inland heat returns month state -- monday through wednesday. a cooler pattern at the end of next week. we do have some light clouds of the coast right now. drizzle offshore already. lots of high clouds streaming through the southern half of the viewing area overnight and a little bit of marine layer development. chance of some patchy drizzle along the coast and even around the bay shoreline. that will dissipate quickly and give way to sunny skies and a warmer day than we had today.

multiple people suffered injuries as a result of the explosion and authorities say they are still searching for victims under the debris. >> three patients were transported by ems to local hospitals. currently we have one that we were able to confirm is deceased and several other people were unaccounted for. >> one person is still missing at this hour in the cause of the explosion is under investigation. a wild chase involving a stolen ambulance ended in washington dc after a driver plowed into more than a dozen cars, it started when the suspect allegedly stole the vehicle after it responded to a crash on a highway in nearby arlington virginia. the pursuit was caught on video as the driver headed into washington, it ended when the ambulance crashed into a parked car and police arrested the suspect. several people were injured during the chase but all the injuries are considered minor. there is a surge in summertime covid cases we are going to look at what is driving the spike in
