scene scene. >> i heard wailing and screaming. reporter: a tragic scene in san francisco, sfpd says a fo year-old woman pushed in a stroller was hit and killed by a car. a former news anchor who lives nearby was walking past the area after the incident. >> she was lifeless. there was blood everywhere. it is so hard. reporter: the girl's father is in critical condition but the mother is an injured -- uninjured. >> it was probably one most traumatizing things i have ever seen. when they were able to pull the little girl out -- sorry -- reporter: police say the family is visiting from out of town. as for the driver, officers do

out, then i spoke to individuals in west maui when i was visiting with survivors. they said the fire begin again. the firefighters had gone to fight other fires. ama: governor newsom announced he is sending more resources to hawaii to help with the recovery effort. dan: in that same update, governor green reiterated he is talking with president biden about the federal emergency response. the president spoke today about his plans to visit maui. pres. biden: my wife and i will travel to hawaii as soon as i can. i do not want to get in the way. i want to go in make sure they have everything they need. i want to be sure we do not disrupt the ongoing recovery efforts.

and i was like, that is like a block and a half away. reporter: that was her description when she walked down the street last week to see where the smell of smoke was coming from. susie, her husband and her daughters were home as the situation worsened. her husband sprayed down the house with the hose. >> i was trying to gather more stuff. junior came back in the house, and he was getting burned by embers flying around. reporter: the family ran to the car and maneuvered their way out of the area. because of downed power lines, they were routed to front street chose to go the wrong way on a one-way street to get out. >> i think that saved our lives. you saw how many cars were stuck. at one moment i looked at my daughter, and she had one streaked down her face.

the reason you can see it is because her face was covered in soot and ash. it was really reporter: they were able to get to safety despite the paint on the car burning away. day's later her husband opened up about his feelings. >> my husband said he gave himself to god. he thought we were all going to burn in the car. he was ok with happy. that hurt. for him to have that but that was the reality of it. reporter: so many have reached out to susie, who was with her daughter when we spoke to her,

and her entire family. she says they lost nearly everything, but they are alive and grateful as they stay at a friends house. >> we are fortunate to have a bed to sleep on. i don't know how many people are in their cars. reporter: susie tells me she is not sure what will happen next. they are taking it one day at a time, but she enrolled her five-year-old in school, and kindergarten starts on thursday. they will have mental health counselors on hand, and her daughter says she cannot wait to play on the playground. abc 7 news. dan: a little bit of normalcy for that girl. francisco may have its entire police department fold, and leaders are stepping in. broadmoor an unincorporated section and the district supervisor says the police department is at risk shutting down. it comes after years of scandal and alleged fiscal mismanagement resulting in a financial crisis. the police chief says conversations are ongoing with the county but no final decision is made on aleutian or next steps. the supervisor says if the department folds, he wants the sheriff department to respond to emergency calls. >> when you say your police department is going away, there are people who are scared. dan: a local community group is expected to hold a meeting thursday to give residents an opportunity to weigh in. new developments on the presence of west nile in the south bay, mosquitoes testing positive for

the virus have turned up in sunnyvale. santa clara county officials made that announcement today, the second time mosquitoes have been found, and this time the west nile carrying mosquitoes were found in the 94 94087 zip codes. the area will be sprayed for mosquitoes late thursday night. ama: encouraging news for the economy, americans are continuing to open their wallets. numbers show retail sales last month rose. expert saw amazon prime day was one factor but by category, clothing stores saw a sales gain, and restaurant spending was up 1.4%. our work to build a better bay area means ways to boost and lift our economy, and maybe that secret is in a sauce.
