. >> good morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning. i'm morgan norwood in for rhiannon. we begin with the stage now set for former president trump's fourth arrest. trump now has nine days to surrender to officials in georgia on a sweeping racket, fearing indictment. and the sheriff says he plans for the former president to have his mugshot taken. like any other defender. >> trump is still claiming he has proof of election fraud as he and 18 others are accused of a criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election in georgia. abc's lionel moise starts us off this morning. >> the sheriff's office in fulton county, georgia, announcing former president donald trump and 18 alleged cocaine operators are expected to turn themselves in by the district attorney's deadline friday, august 25th. the sheriff's office says it's expected that all 19 defendants named in the indictment will be booked at the rice street jail. the racketeering indictment accuses trump of applying pressure on officials for weeks to overturn election results,

including 11 phone calls. one to georgia secretary of state brad raffensperger. so, look, all i want to do is this. >> i just want to find. votes, which is one more that we have because we won the state white house chief of staff mark meadows, who set up that call. >> mr. president, everybody is on the line, is now moving to have the case against him, tried in federal court. >> trump has remained defiant, using the charges as ammo on the campaign trail. >> every time one of these new sets of charges comes out, his fundraising numbers, they go up, he goes up in the polls announcing he will hold a news conference monday where he claims he'll present an irrefutable report on alleged election fraud in georgia. >> the republican governor of this state, though, was emphatic. brian kemp, saying the 2020 election in georgia was not stolen. >> this as trump's former

lawyer, rudy giuliani, also charged, is on defense. >> i thought when i was doing this, i was protected by the fact i was defending him. >> experts say although we are in the middle of an election, jurors will be focused on facts not politics. >> jury's always surprised me with how good and fair they are. and we'll see what happens with this case. but if he's taken this lightly, he was taken this lightly. that's a huge mistake because this is a very serious crime with very serious implications. >> the fulton county da says she wants to try this case in six months and that she intends to try all 19 defendants at the same time. now, it is possible that some defendants could take a plea deal, though, before it goes to trial. andrew morgan lionel, thank you. >> and in a separate indictment involving trump, we're learning special counsel jack smith got a hold of trump's direct messages when his office obtained a search warrant for his twitter account. newly unsealed court papers revealed there was, quote, some volume of dms sent

and received. by trump's account . but the content of the private messages still remains unclear. they were obtained before the january 6th indictment, breaking overnight, powerful storms left at least one person dead in north carolina. >> the storm brought down trees and power lines in the durham area, leaving thousands without power. this morning, a woman was killed when a tree fell on her car near duke university. farther south, another storm brought down a tree on a postal service vehicle. that's in athens, georgia. a amazingly that postal worker escaped injury. >> now to hawaii where the wildfire death toll climbed over 100 overnight. more than a week after the fire in the city of lahaina erupted. only about 30% of the area has been searched overnight, abc news gaining access to lahaina, the historic town on maui destroyed by a deadly wildfire. >> if there was fuel to burn, the fire burned it. >> homes still smoldering as rescuers searched charred buildings and cars. abc's whit johnson is there. >> this is our first trip into

lahaina to see it firsthand. and the first thing that hits you is that smell all the power pulls one after another after another. there snapped and down all over the place. >> they're now at the center of a debate of whether or not the utility company should have cut power in the lead up to the fires. many saying that the electrified downed power poles helped fuel the fires. on monday, hawaii electric ceo defending the decision to keep the power flowing in lahaina. >> the electricity powers, the pumps that provide the water and so that was also a critical need during that time. >> hundreds of people remain unaccounted for in the area. more than a week after the wildfires erupted, members with fema search and rescue task force stressing that the process will take time. >> we want to ensure everything is looked at, done properly so everybody alive or deceased gets to come home to their family. >> president biden says he will visit lahaina soon, sending this

message not just our prayers. >> every asset, every asset they need will be there for them. aid will also arrive from what might seem like an unlikely place. >> austin, minnesota, home of hormel foods, the makers of spam, hormel partnered with a nonprofit to deliver water supplies and, of course, cans of spam. hawaii consumes roughly 8 million cans per year. more than any other state. our team led into lahaina tuesday night, says officials are finding human remains in some unexpected places. that's a result of people trying to hide anywhere they could. >> north korea has released its first public statement on the american soldier in its custody since he bolted across the border last month. the north claims army private travis king was frustrated over inequality and racism in the military and american society. abc's martha raddatz has more details. >> as the north koreans now saying, he has expressed his willingness to seek refuge in north korea or a third country after experiencing what they say

is inhumane treatment and racial discrimination in the army. his family had told us something similar just a few weeks ago, saying he was struggling during his deployment with racism. >> now, analysts say kim jong un may try to use king as a bargaining chip to gain financial concessions or to get the us and south korea to cut back on those military drills. >> a former top fbi counterintelligence official faces five years in prison after pleading guilty to working with a russian oligarch. he once investigated charles mcgonigal admitted he accepted more than $17,000 from oleg to braska. mcgonigal led the fbi's counterintelligence division between 2016 and 2018. >> now to the blind side family responding to allegations made by michael or the former nfl player says he was never adopted. but they say the family still profited off of that, falsified story. now, the family calls orr's allegations insulting. >> do you have any place to say tonight it was the real life

story that inspired the oscar winning film the blind side, a homeless teenager taken in by a family who went on to become a first round nfl draft pick. >> go, michael, go. >> the baltimore ravens select michael lauer offensive tackle mississippi. >> but michael or the football player portrayed in the film says he was the one blindsided by the family. he says never actually adopted him in a new petition or claims. leanne and sean tuohy instead tricked him into signing a document, making them his conservators, claiming the family negotiated a movie deal, profited themselves, but that he was paid nothing or says he only learned of the situation earlier this year. the two family claims or threaten them as part of a shakedown and say that the idea that they ever sought to profit off mr. or is not only offensive, it is transparently ridiculous. they claim the family gave him an equal cut of every penny received from the blind side.

the family says that this arrangement wasn't a secret, but or is now asking the court to end that conservatorship. and he wants to be paid what he says is his fair share of any profits. the 2nd may have made in his name. he also was seeking unspecified punitive damages. erielle reshef, abc news, new york. our thanks to erielle reshef there. >> the mother of the virginia first grader who shot his teacher faces jail time after pleading guilty to a felony. >> d.j. taylor could spend up to six months behind bars as part of a plea deal on child neglect charges. prosecutors say taylor's son climbed onto a dresser and took her gun from her purse. her attorney says the 25 year old is still upset about the shooting. she feels very responsible, feels very bad. >> and i think that's part of just the general irritability, anxiety, depression and everything else. >> teacher abby's warner is suing the newport news school district for $40 million. her attorney claims school staff warned administrators that taylor's son had a gun. >> time now for a look at your

morning weather. >> good morning. finally, a break from the heat here in the southeast. much cooler today from atlanta back into east texas. storms into florida. that could be a little bit on the strong side. high temps today only in the 80s, though, from nashville to atlanta, 90 from new orleans to dallas. but i'll tell you one thing about the heat. it is coming back this weekend into early next week. a heat wave will expand to the north into the great lakes and back into the southeast. we could see triple digits in minneapolis next week. accuweather meteorologist kevin cochran. moment a firefighter catches a baby from a burning home. >> also ahead, the judge accused of murdering his wife. >> new court documents revealing text messages that he sent to court staff after the shooting. and in tyler police force in minnesota resigns what it means

do only on gma. >> back now with heroic moments near minneapolis. you got to see this video. it's newly released video showing a sheriff's deputy racing to the back of a burning home catching a one year old dropped from a window and then saving the boy's three year old sister. all four people, thankfully, got out of that house safely. >> incredible video. their southern california judge charged with killing his wife during a drunken argument has pleaded not guilty. >> lawyers for jeffrey ferguson claimed the shooting was accidental. nearly 50 weapons were taken from the couple's anaheim hills home, along with 26,000 rounds of ammunition. prosecutors say the 72 year old judge texted his court staff writing, i just lost it. i just shot my wife. ferguson remains free on $1 million bail. >> well, turning now to a mass resignation, leaving one

minnesota community on edge. the city's entire police force called it quits as questions swirl about a nationwide shortage of officers. this is heartbreaking to us this morning. good human is scrambling the entire police force is resigning, leaving the city's roughly 1500 residents in law enforcement limbo. but good news, mayor, is sending an optimistic message about the future of the force. >> we are going to rise above this, and i'm confident that we will have a full police department. >> again, the main reason for the officers leaving disputes over their pay, the goodhue police chief who resigned late last week, had previously requested higher pay for his officers and better recruitment efforts. the department was comprised of many part time officers who were loyal to their chief. >> we were really there for him, more so than, you know, needing a part time job. and so with him going, there just really wasn't any need for any of us to stick around. >> police departments nationwide

are facing a vicious cycle of retirement resignations and fewer hires. a survey released in april indicated that while police departments are recruiting more officers compared to 2020, departments saw 47% more resignations and 19% more retirements in 2022, compared to 2019. the staffing crunch is leaving some communities under protected. back in goodhue, resident are on edge. >> it's just unnerving to know that they may not be there, even though yes, they're talking about having goodhue county come in. >> i just prefer goodhue having their own police department. >> the city's mayor says the former police chief josh smith, and another full time officer will stay on the force until the 24th. after that, the goodhue county sheriff's office will be taking over. >> coming up, a closer look at tories behaving badly after the latest incident at the eiffel tower. >> also ahead, the massive atm malfunction allowing people to take out money they didn't have. we'll tell you what happens next

19 vaccines. >> back now with the state trooper rammed on a connecticut highway. you see it there. the trooper was responding to a crash on interstate 84 in hartford. a driver lost control on a curve and hit the trooper's cruiser, which then led to a chain reaction crash. the trooper was hurt, but is expected to be okay. world bank customers in ireland tried to get rich off a technical glitch. long lines appeared in dublin and other cities tuesday. the bank of ireland says a technical issue allowed users to withdraw large amounts of cash, including money they may not have had in their accounts. officials warn that the funds aren't free and will eventually be debited. >> also, from europe to americans are accused of having too much to drink and sleeping it off on the eiffel tower. it's just the latest example of tourists behaving badly. it's vacation season with tourists around the world eager to travel after years of pandemic restrictions, but not all of

them are behaving. on monday, security guards at the eiffel tower finding two american tourists asleep in an off limits area. the men bought tickets and entered the landmark sunday night before hopping security barriers while descending the tower. paris prosecutors say the men appeared to have got stuck because of how drunk they were. the eiffel tower's operator says the men didn't pose a threat. the men were arrested, but officials say no charges will be filed. it's just the latest in a string of tourists acting out at iconic locations like this woman climbing into rome's historic trevi fountain to fill her water bottle, ignoring signs that forbid entering the water. >> serious man at just a few miles away at the coliseum, a british tourist was caught on camera carving his and his fiancee's name into the nearly 2000 year old structure. >> and an apology letter. the man implied he didn't realize just how old the ancient arena is. the man who took the video telling ktla he always hate to see any kind of tourist doing that. >> but mostly since i'm from california, you kind of hold out

hope that they're not american. >> italy is seemingly a magnet for tourist misbehavior. earlier this month, video shows two tourists, including a popular german influencer at a historic villa near milan, attempting to hug a 150 year old sculpture worth over $200,000. the sculpture toppling to the ground and shattering as they attempt the stunt. italy's deputy prime minister branding the tourists imbecile as that group offered the owner of the villa about $200 for the damage before leaving the country. >> tourists behaving badly. well, still to come, how adele helped one couple with their gender reveal. >> plus, a play on the baseball diamond like you've never seen before
