coverage. dustin dorsey and zach fuentes have been on the story since the moment it happened. our coverage begins with zach at the scene with the latest developments. reporter: that is right, this has been a very large scene with a wide perimeter, so many different impacts. police say they had a suspect in custody just after 1:00 is when they made that announcement, more than five hours after the initial call that they responded to, so this is had a lot of impacts, shocking and alarming for those involved and for those who live and work around here. moments after those flashbangs rang out in the neighborhood, officers were seen taking a man out of a home. police confirming a suspect was taken into custody after sin is a police responded to a report of a family disturbance. >> shortly after arrival, officers made contact in began taking fire from a suspect. one officer was hit by gunfire

and transported to a local hospital for that injury. reporter: many were close enough to be startled by all that activity is that suspect was taken into custody. >> i heard a big boom, eyes started watering. the aroma of ammonia came over me and i was like, wow. i see one >> i have never seen anything remotely close to this. reporter: some residents were evacuated and others were forced to stay in their home were kept outside the police perimeter four hours, like this woman who did not want her face shown. she left her home moments after the shooting not realizing what it happened. >> when i came back out, i could get through. it did not know what was going on. reporter: road closures impacting multiple large and small businesses that were not able to accept customers.

he was about to open up a shop for the day when police stopped him. >> they say get back in your story. reporter: as information trickled out during the course of the day, those who live in the area are trying to cope with the overwhelming scene. >> i am shocked. reporter: we know that officers responded to a family disturbance call just before 8:00 this morning. the officer was immediately fired up. we are waiting to find out more details or to what led up to the initial family disturbance call that got police there, or details about the suspect, about who was in the house. we are expecting more details at 5:30 this afternoon. the chief of the san jose police department be speaking. we will stream that for you lives on our website and on our app. kristen: the injured police officer was taken to santa clara valley medical center down the road from that scene. that is where dustin dorsey

continues our team coverage with the latest from the hospital. dustin. reporter: just write down the road from where that scene initiated this morning, things a lot more calm here, and it has relaxed as the day progressed. hopefully that means good news for the injured officer shot. we were on the scene where there was a heavy police presence for san jose pd and county's office. this is one of two level two trauma centers. this is located 1.4 miles away from the scene where the officer was shot responding to that family disturbance. the san jose police chief and assistant police chief were seen leaving the emergency department. less than one hour later police say they apprehended the suspect. a tow truck arrived at the er and towed away a cruiser after

sexual abuse by staffers at a women's prison filed a class-action lawsuit today. that suit claims correction officers engaged in rape, sexual abuse, forced tripping -- stripping and trafficking of individuals. prison officials failed to remedy these problems, which the plaintiffs they created a culture of sexual violence and shielded the worst perpetrators from accountability. >> the lawsuit itself seeks an end to the sexual violence, to retaliation including solitary confinement, the ability to confidentially report our, increased access to counsel and mental health care. larry: the lawsuit is on behalf of eight named plaintiffs as well as hundreds of other incarcerated people who said they were victims of sexual assault or harassment. we have reached out to prison officials for, but have yet to hear back. a total of eight officers at the present have been charged with

sexual abuse of incarcerated individuals. those who pleaded guilty last month. kristen: new developments over an ordinance that seeks to limit homeless encampments and how much space they can take up. a judge today issued a temporary restraining order putting the new rules on hold. send rafael approve the ordinance last month saying that encampments lead to increased violence and emergency calls. celebrating our major announcement this afternoon. reinstatement of a hospital into california's medicaid program. the decision comes from the state just days after city officials applied for readmission for california low income residents. for the mayor the news was especially gratifying. she says her grandmother lived and thrived there for years. >> the joy that changed in

demonstrated to me all i needed to know about the care that she experienced at laguna honda. kristen: the hospital lost his eligibility for the program due to health and safety issues and was ordered to transfer all patients, but that was ordered on hold after several people died soon after being removed or moved. according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, 95% of laguna honda patients rely on medical. larry: teacher shortage. the principal of lincoln high school sent a letter to parents think the district has not been able to hire instructors for various subjects. the superintendent greeted students and parents at cobb elementary this morning. he said the district is exploring ways to attract teachers despite the high cost of living. >> the city can be expensive, and we are working on having additional teacher housing and making it affordable for teachers to be in the city and

work here to support our students. larry: wayne told us the district is continuing to hire individuals who do not yet have their teaching credentials and helping them earn those credentials. on monday the california state superintendent of public instruction announced new statewide and the state isachers exploring how to about retired teachers to come back as substitutes without negatively impacting their pensions. kristen: they are also returning to school this week at uc berkeley with the fall semester starting today. it is movement time, and they are expecting a thousand students to move into residence halls at apartments run by the university. some of them got settled yesterday while the rest are supposed to show up today. there are some nerves being away from home for the first time, including one student who is helping her twin sister move-in. >> i was excited closer i was nervous about it i'm up i did being totally fine. kristen: expect a lot of traffic

the american red cross has deployed people and are focused on helping evacuees find much needed shelter. kristen: livermore valley is celebrating its annual listing of the grapes. a tradition found in many of the world's winegrowing regions. this year' is harvest will be the first since california's long drought ended and winemakers say this year's vintage looks promising because of those historic storms. >> a lot of our vineyards started watering much later than they would have normally water their vineyards, so we had really rich soil this year, which is exciting. it has pushed our harvest later. kristen: livermore winemakers are covering module -- multiple spiritual bases. larry: they have everything covered. it is so warm, you need a little beverage out that way.

adult male. reporter: santa -- san franci police confirmed there were pushing the girl in his trailer -- in a stroller. -- >> they do not stop, they do not put on their blinker. reporter: to date left flowers on the pole with the family was struck. any say they fear for their safety. off-camera air traffic control officer confirmed one of his colleagues to help the family had to take today off after the traumatizing scene. sfpd has not released details on how the collision occurred but confirmed the driver was arrested and is facing multiple charges. >> arrested the driver for three counts of not yielding to pedestrians and one count of vehicular manslaughter. reporter: in a statement sfmta confirm their primary findings

report this is not the result of a speeding crash. there have been 19 injured victims between 2019 and 2023. tuesday's death is the first fidelity here. today in less than an hour we saw at least four close calls. this resulted in yelling, referring to the time a driver waited for him to cross. it is scary just to stand here. you can see cars flying through this intersection. drivers go from 0 to 60 in seconds. the san francisco bicycle coalition is asking the city to make changes. >> it should allow for the intersection and cars waiting as they cross. larry: incredibly sled.

tragedy strikes again for his ancisco family. danielle and her daughter were killed andd-onollision on the higay in trra foothills. josé luis garcia junior also died in the accident. we have video of daniel back in 2008 when she attended a court hearing for the shooting death of her husband and two sons. a third son survived the incident and is now the only surviving member of his family. kristen: illegally dumped trash is being cleared from the san leandro reservoir. the mid to zippered -- municipal utility district says they are removing three abandoned vehicles left in the watershed. illegally dumped items are not only a pain to remove. it can harm the environment. >> it bad for the wildlife, birds that live on this land who mistakenly eat that trash and

sometimes there might be hazardous waste like paint or other waste or contaminated soils that are dropped off there. kristen: east bay mud says if you see illegal dumping it is safer to not it involved but get a license plate and reported to their agency. larry: developing news in northern california where wildfires have led to evacuation orders for parts of siskiyou county. the largest one is nearly 3000 acres near highway 86. some damage from the flames include possibly a fire truck that burned. the u.s. forest service as there are 19 other fires in the national forest, and lightning has sparked all of them. thunderstorms are in the forecast, and that could lead to more wildfires. the california office of emergency services strike team on its way to eugene, oregon to fight wildfires up there. crews left early to make the journey north.
