>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. >> an officer down in san jose, shot during annew details joining us. officers were checking out a disturbance call before 8:00. what came next was an intense standoff. this was at a two-story condo complex. the suspect accused of shooting the officer is in custody tonight. lauren martinez learning more about the wounded officer who has 10 years on the force. reporter: police say officer is in critical but stable condition.

we also learned tonight that the officers partner is assembly member evan lowe's brother. >> this is the first female officer shot at the san jose police department. reporter: the san jose police chief says the department is actively investigating while praying for their wounded officer. two officers responded to a family disturbance wednesday morning. the caller said her husband was drunk and trying to hit her. the chief said the two responding officers were ambushed 30 seconds after arriving to the complex. >> the suspect exited onto the balcony landing. from a position of concealment, discharged a firearm, striking the officer. reporter: the female officer was shot in the upper body outside the vest. >> without hesitation or consideration for himself, the officers partner extracted the victim officer from the line of fire to a place of safety. he began to treat her injuries.

reporter: silicon valley native evan low said the injured officers partner is his brother. >> i headed down to see him to give him the biggest hug ever. reporter: right now is the time to think about the officer who was shot and be reminded that this happens every day, he said. >> these are public servants in our communities. this is a family. we are a community and we must not tolerate this. reporter: after a four hour standoff, the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody. the 44-year-old man has an extensive criminal history and is on active felony probation. >> today, we are extremely blessed that we did not lose another officer. a convicted felon with a gun should never. reporter: he pointed to the professionalism that no one else was harmed. >> we are praying for her swift

recall alameda county district attorney pamela price is taking shape. members of the group safe alameda for everyone filed their letter of intent, the first step toward getting a recall on the ballot. her supporters feel she is doing the job she was elected to do, confident the recall will fail. >> we are undermining our entire system. i think it's an outrage. we see this as a distraction from the work she's doing. i don't believe it will take hold. larry: another supporter touched on the perception that crime is rampant in oakland. she says there's a long history of violent crime and price should not be faulted. supporters of the recall includes several family members of crime victims. they are expected to start gathering signatures next month. they have 160 days to get 93,000 signatures and have them verified to get the recall on the ballot. let's get to the wildfire emergency that's breaking out

across the west coast. the u.s. for service as a cluster of 20 wildfires are burning in far northern california, by the oregon border. you can see all of them on our wildfire tracker. the largest of the bunch is being called the head fire, forcing evacuations, burning west of yreka. cal fire estimates its burning three to 4000 acres tonight. firefighters say each of the 20 fires in the klamath national forest were sparked by lightning. let's take a quick peek at our weather locally and get ready for tomorrow. sandhya: today, triple digits. tomorrow, numbers start to go down. it is socked in tomorrow morning, you will have to deal with this. dense fog along the coast right now. quarter-mile visibility. watch out for the fog. human still. 50's to 70's.

noontime, sun and clouds. towards 4:00, showers and thunderstorms. mid-60's to mid 90's by 7:00. temperatures will begin to drop off. how long the cooling will last and when wet weather may show up in the bay area. larry: we will see you in a few minutes. the number of dead from the maui wildfire is up to 111 people tonight. cruise still have a huge area to search. they are only 30% done. hawaii's governor says it's a race against time to try to find all the victims because of the chance of storms that could hit the islands. one issue being brought up frequently, sirens on maui did not go off that night. an emergency official gave an explanation and stated his belief that even if they had sounded the sirens, it would not have helped many of the victims. >> sirens have not been used for brush fires.

vice president of taiwan. the taiwanese politician flew into sfo for a brief stop at a local hotel after a diplomatic trip to south america. wednesday night, he spoke at a banquet. his visit drawing criticism from the chinese government which has condemned relations between the u.s. and taiwan which phasing used as a breakaway province. >> ever since 1949, taiwan and china have been separate entities. but china all along has claimed that taiwan is still part of china. reporter: a political science professor at uc berkeley says the chinese government has become more assertive over claiming taiwan, a democratic island just off of its coast. >> as chinese, we want our motherland to be united since taiwan is a part of china. reporter: for many who came out

to protest, the china taiwan issue is a domestic problem that the u.s. needs to stay out of. they say the american government selling arms to the island as well as visits by politicians like nancy pelosi benefit no one. >> u.s. government needs to step out. they need to leave it alone, let china and taiwan solve the problem. reporter: that view wasn't shared by a group of taiwanese americans who gathered across the street. >> they say it's one china. that's a big lie. every country, they should taiwan exists in their. for more than 70 years. reporter: he's been vocal about his desire for taiwan to be an independent country. e-zine seen as the most likely person to become the next president of the island. a lot of people say their presence here is about more than supporting the vice president. they tell me it's a way for them to promote democratic values. for many here, those values mean

used as a tool to search for an afterschool program that allows those with disabilities. to others, searching to a new -- for a new school to address health needs. zooming with another parent in a similar situation or finding a kids camp that allows those with special needs to attend. >> you can walk into a place say the word camp and you will get a bunch of people saying, i can't find one. reporter: molly's mom says caring for a child with special needs is a challenge. can molly do this or go there. it's life but anything that makes life easier goes a long way. she's used connected parent.net and says it reaches a group of parents and guardians that, in her opinion, is often forgotten about. >> she's done the google search for us. given us already platform saves a considerable amount of time and angst. as you are trying to figure out

what you need. being a special needs parent the child can feel isolated. this brings community. it is so important. reporter: julie tells us the website is just that right now, a site. not an app that maybe someday. for now, a way to find the next best step for those like violet and molly. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. larry: great way to connect people. on treasure island one of the first autonomous shuttles in the state is running. a fully electric shuttle that will run every day from 9:00 to 6:00. it's running a nine month long pilot program to give the community a chance to try out the service. as the population grows and new housing developments go up, local leaders saying have -- say that having transportation is key. >> the shuttle will connect to the transit setter into the ferry.

-- center and the ferry. it will have connections to the buses that go to the mainland and east bay. larry: the shuttle is free and will take passengers to seven stops around treasure island. more young women being diagnosed with cancer according to a new study. federal researchers study that data from 17 national cancer institute registries. they looked at more than 500,000 cases of early-onset cancer between the years of 2010 and 2019. the study found that early-onset cancers in women increased slightly over that decade. young women in their 30's saw the biggest increase while cases among men in the same age group declined. more sensitive screening test are one reason for the increase. fast thinking basque ballplayers probably saved a teammates life. video shows the moment the man collapsed during a game in new jersey. a teammate who happened to be a volunteer firefighter

immediately asked for someone to call 911. another teammate grabbed a nearby machine. they put the pads on their friend. a police officer arrived moments later. >> i went and grabbed the oxygen. as i was going to grab the oxygen, i saw. i went over and started doing compressions. reporter: their actions cap the man alive until emts could take over. he's recovering following what's known as a v. fib or ventricular fibrillation. why it's important to know cpr. this is funny. a golden retriever is in the doghouse after he was caught taking a dip in the neighbors pool. he was on camera taking a break from the summer heat, scaling the fence here. the owner captured the moment her water loving pooch went up top, posting the footage on tiktok. there he is. she's not were -- are why he snuck over the fence because he has his own pool.
