norwood in for rhiannon and we begin with the rare phenomenon a hurricane churning in the pacific near mexico. and it's now taking aim at the southwest. >> the storm's winds are blowing at about 120mph, and forecasters say it could unload a year's worth of rain in less than two days, stretching from southern california into arizona this morning. california in the crosshairs as hurricane hillary strengthens off the mexican coast. and heads north. >> right now, it's a hurricane, although it's projected to when it hits us to be a tropical storm community stretching from san diego to nevada, even western arizona are bracing for whipping winds. >> torrential rain and flash floods. abc's rob marciano explaining the potential impact across some of the desert areas. >> we could see a year's worth of rain in places like palm spring or las vegas. some of those mountain areas in just a couple of days. >> the storm is expected to make landfall in mexico on sunday and weaken as it approaches the us border. experts have their eyes fixed on hillary's path, its precise movement up the west coast will determine just how

dangerous the system will be if it moves just a little bit more offshore and sort of is more of a glancing blow for the baja peninsula, then it might not weaken quite as much. >> hillary set to make history if it reaches southern california as a tropical storm. be>> this would the first potential tropical system to make landfall in california in more than 80 years. warm waters west of mexico are partially to blame for supercharging the system, which is also a concern in the gulf of mexico and atlantic ocean, where several storms could develop in the coming days. >> one expert calling the record 88 degree water in the gulf freaking hot. others warning that coral reefs, a vital part of the underwater ecosystem and a line of defense against hurricanes are bleaching and dying across the caribbean. if we didn't have this this spur and groove reef system right off the coast of the keys, these islands would be decimated. back on the west coast, experts are predicting hillary could reach category four strength as early

as tomorrow with winds of 140mph. the path could change, but it could be the first tropical storm to hit southern california since 1939. >> we turn now to the aftermath of the maui wildfire, starting with a stunning resignation. the island's emergency services chief has stepped down. all of this amid intense criticism of a key decision that many say cost lives. the fire's death toll now at at least 111 people. abc s derek dennis with more. >> this morning, maui's emergency services chief stepping down effective immediately after the revelation. warning sirens signaling the start of the deadly wildfires were not activated. do you regret not sounding the sirens? >> i do not. herman and daya explaining in a news conference wednesday sirens are primarily used for tsunami warnings with residents trained to quickly seek higher ground. and if that was the case, then they would have gone into the fire 24 hours after those remarks and maui's mayor announced andrea's resignation due to health reasons and saying in a

statement, given the gravity of the crisis we are facing, my team and i will be placing someone in this key position as quickly as possible. >> meantime, an outreach volunteer working remotely in florida is tracking about a thousand people on maui. still missing. >> there's a lot of people that i used to do outreach that are now volunteering in the shelter. so they will recognize someone there and send it updated a list that is the number of dead keeps rising on maui, with crews finding more remains in burned out structures. >> governor josh green confirming 45% of the burn zone has been searched so far. our david muir traveling by boat to the shore of the incinerated town of lahaina. a captain who responded the night the fires broke out, getting emotional as we look at it here, you can see that people had no place to go. >> other than the water or the one road out of town. i mean, they were trapped. and there are wildfire concerns elsewhere. >> paradise, california,

installing warning sirens as it nears five years since deadly wildfires in that community killed 85 people. the nation's deadliest wildfire before maui and more than 1000 wildfires are burning in canada. one town, yellowknife, the capital of canada's northwest territories, ordered evacuated residents fleeing by car and waiting in long lines at the airport for emergency flights out now, these fires not burning, obviously near nearly as fast as the ones in maui. >> and thankfully not nearly as many fatalities. but we're looking for these fires to continue to burn well into fall. >> hawaii's governor is planning a statewide address tonight with an update on the search and recovery efforts, the missing and the long road ahead to rebuild after the fires. andrew morgan, derek, thank you. >> breaking overnight, russia says a ukrainian drone headed toward central moscow was shot down by air defense forces. new video shows damage to a building in central moscow. a witness described the impact as a powerful explosion. wreckage from the drone rained down on

the streets below, but so far no casualties reported. >> exactly one week from today is the deadline for donald trump to turn himself in to georgia authorities on charges of interfering with the 2020 election. now trump's lawyers are now trying to work out the details of his surrender. abc's nguyen joins us live with the latest. and good morning. what can we expect right good morning morgan yeah how did that deadline to turn himself in next week trump's team sources say, is headed to georgia to figure out their next move. >> this morning, former president donald trump has exact one week to surrender at the fulton county jail, along with his 18 alleged coconspirators charged in georgia's 2020 election conspiracy case. and now the fbi and fulton county sheriff are investigating new threats against officials involved in this case. law enforcement particularly concerned that the personal information of the grand jurors who voted to indict trump is being shared online. the sheriff vowing that anyone responsible for making threats will be

arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. trump, on fox again attacked prosecutors, calling them very sick people. it's a witch hunt. >> it's just a continuation of a witch hunt. >> the sheriff also reminding all defendants, including trump, they can turn themselves in at any time. the jail is open 24 over seven. >> i think this is the first jurisdiction where he's getting a mug shot. that's going to be a little bit interesting and a press conference. >> trump previously scheduled for monday to address this indictment, is now canceled. the express saying on social media that his lawyers would prefer putting this in formal legal filings. his team also likely to try to move the georgia case to federal court in the separate federal case where trump is accused of trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, his attorneys have requested a trial start date of april 2026. the bold proposal for a more than two year delay stands in stark contrast to the special counsel's ambitious timeline of starting the trial in january of next year. judge

tanya judkins, who's overseeing the federal election interference case, will hear arguments from both sides on august 28th. now, trump's attorneys cite the extraordinary amount of evidence as reason to delay trial. morgan and one with the latest from washington. >> and thank you. >> federal prosecutors are asking for the longest sentences yet in connection for the january 6th attack. they're recommending 33 years for ex proud boys leader enrique tarrio . they also want the same punishment for one of those lieutenants, joseph biggs. and slightly lesser prison terms for two others. all four were convicted of seditious conspiracy. >> we now to idaho, where the man accused of murdering four college students expected in court today. some contentious issues are on the agenda for brian coburn pretrial hearing and it comes after coburn filed to have his murder case thrown out this morning. lawyers for the man accused of killing four university of idaho students is asking his indictment to be dismissed, arguing the case was

flawed because the grand jury was not given the right information. but prosecutors say coburn argument rests entirely on an erroneous legal theory. it comes as brian burger makes a court appearance today charged with four counts of first degree murder. his defense team is fighting the science that led to his arrest. >> one of the main legs of this prosecution is the dna of brian kobilka that was discovered inside the house. if you can take that out, the prosecution can't stand. >> prosecutors say coburn dna ties him to the house where the murders took place. they claim dna from his cheek swab is a statistical match to dna found on a knife sheath discovered near the body of victim madison mogan. but coworkers, defense attorneys are casting doubt, demanding the state disclosed the materials used during its genetic genealogy investigation and pointing out three other male dna profiles were also found at the seed. >> that's why the defense is looking for any morsel of information that they can use to

undermine the dna. >> and his first hearing, burger declined to offer a plea. so the judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. if convicted, he could face the death penalty. and code burger is expected to attend today's hearing in person , though his request to dismiss the indictment is not currently slated to be addressed. >> time now for a look at your friday weather. >> good morning. we have a major hurricane off the southwest coast of mexico moving up toward the baja peninsula, california. the winds are 125 miles an hour with hurricane hillary. hillary should lose intensity to a tropical storm into the weekend. making impact here into southern california. 4 to 8in of rain. flash flooding, mudslides, power outages with 40 to 60 mile an hour winds through tuesday of next week. meantime, a heat wave is building this weekend. accuweather meteorologist kevin cochran.

five was out jogging earlier this month when she failed to return home. she was found dead the next day. now, investigators say they've matched dna from the scene to an assault in los angeles last march. but the problem is they don't know who or where the man is. >> we don't have any clue where he could be. we don't even know if he's still in hartford county or in the state of maryland, because obviously, in march he was in california and then here in august, he was here in maryland. so we don't know if he's still here or not. at least police believe the suspect is about five, nine, 150 pounds. >> and in his early 20s, the ex-wife of a microsoft executive has been indicted in his murder . >> shana gardner is awaiting extradition from washington state to florida, where she could face the death penalty. here's abc's stephanie ramos. shana gardner, the ex-wife of microsoft executive jared bright again is under arrest, charged with his execution style murder in jacksonville, florida. shana gardner's indictment acknowledges her central and key

role in the cold, calculated and premeditated murder of jared bright. again, a grand jury indicting gardner for allegedly plotting with her new husband and a hitman to murder braddock in last year. prosecutor say the former couple share two kids and had gone through a bitter divorce when he was lured out of his car to move a tire that had been intentionally placed in the street. bullets barely missing his two year old daughter in the back seat. that hitman has confessed to pulling the trigger. but gardner's current husband has pleaded not guilty. in an interview last summer, shana gardner denied any involvement in the murder. >> even though we didn't always get along, he was still the father of my kids. >> jared brigance. heartbroken widow relieved to see this final arrest for 547 days, we have hoped and prayed that this day would come. shana gardner was taken into custody in washington state, where she reportedly moved to with her two kids. >> she'll be extradited to jacksonville, where she and her
