rain in places like palm springs or las vegas in just a couple days. ama: possibly life-threatening flooding as tropical storm hilary moves into southern california. good evening and thank you for joining us. for the first time ever, tropical storm warnings are posted for los angeles and san diego counties get anyone with plans to travel into the areas, the message is simple. stay away. united airlines has issued a hurricane travel waiver for nine southern california airports. that's never happened before. travelers can reschedule at no cost. three major league baseball teams are canceling sunday games because of the approaching storm. shayla girardin as preparations for the storm kick and a high gear. -- into high gear.

reporter: all hands on deck across southern california as residents prepare for hurricane hilary. >> we plan on getting flashlights. we want to make sure we get this early. reporter: stocking up on supplies to filling up sandbags pigot for many, the storm prep has not been easy. >> the first one i went to have sand but no sandbags. they directed me to come here to get sandbags but no sand. reporter: residents say will all be worth it come sunday. >> i thought it would be wise but i worry about damage to my home and my belongings. reporter: karen bass discuss the impact, saying preparations are well underway. they've been in touch with the governor's office and will activate the emergency operation senator -- center to monitor any incident in the city. >> i heard it described as the rainfall for one year being dropped in one day. for us in los angeles, i think

that's quite alarming. reporter: the fire department is fully staffed and ready, tweeting out this video showing the cruise and equipment on standby. >> our preparation has been done and complete. all the apparatuses are ready to go. reporter: they are urging residents to do the same. >> this is one particular situation in the city and state and region where we know it's coming versus a wildfire or an earthquake. so please be prepared. reporter: shayla girardin, abc7news. ama: let's get to sandhya patel who is tracking hilary's progress as it continues toward southern california. sandhya: right now, the latest from the national hurricane it's maintaining category four strength right now. take a look. this is a massive hurricane, well-defined i. 130 miles per hour. it's going to continue to move

to the northwest, paralleling the baja coast. tomorrow evening, it is still a category but -- category four. as it approaches south california, expect storm. for the first time ever, tropical storm warnings for southern california. watches and warnings extending down into baja. the bulk of the moisture for southern california, they will get drenched into the sierra. in the bay area we have the potential for seeing some but several inches of rain through that region, flood watches and warnings already going up this weekend to get you can see wave heights are 44 feet. life-threatening and possibly catastrophic flooding expected. three to six inches of rain. strong gusty wind. largest wells expected. ama: thank you so much.

hilary exec -- is expected to downgrade to a tropical storm as the wind slows down. some experts say it could bring as much as a years worth of rain to some areas in just the next few days. the deputy director of the national hurricane center says that could be what sets this storm apart from anything california has seen before. >> the rain is going to be the topline story. it's the biggest threat. i know the wind component, the novelty of a rare event like this is interesting. if you just really think heavy rain, that will be the best thing you can do to prepare for the storm. looking at wide swaths of three to six inches of rain with some areas enhanced by topography. possibly having 10 inches of rainfall potential. that's just a lot of rain for this portion of the country which normally doesn't receive as much rain. more importantly, the rainfall rates in a tropical system like

this are much greater or faster than what you are used to seeing in a typical rainy pattern during the winter season. if you have plans to going to southern california, especially los angeles or san diego, is probably not going to be a good weekend to drive down. ama: you can track it all weekend long. the hurricane tracker has details about where it's currently located and the impact on the bay area. we have special coverage on our 24 oven -- 24/7 livestream starting at 4:00 sunday. nearly 3000 miles away, another urgent situation unfolding as hundreds of wildfires burn in british columbia and northwest territories. those trying to get out of the area are navigating dangerous road conditions or long wait times for emergency flights. canadian armed forces along with first responders are helping to evacuate more than 20,000 residents as half of the population has now been

displaced. questions remain about why emergency management didn't activate sirens on maui as wildfires burn through the city. the death toll is up to 100 11. officials are expecting that number to rise. a team of volunteers has a spreadsheet of more than 950 people currently not located. the military commander says lahaina will be a multi-year operation for military involvement. the number of survivors at shelters has been cut in half as officials move more people into stable housing. president biden is in tahoe ahead of an upcoming visit to maui. he and the first lady were planning to spend a week on the nevada side of lake tahoe but the bidens are planning to go to maui on monday to assess the wildfire damage and recovery. bay area animal shelters are preparing a warm welcome for dozens of cats and dogs from maui. they are opening space for pets being rescued in the aftermath

of the fires. tara campbell was at the hayward airport this evening with the first arrivals. reporter: fresh off a flight from maui, 40 rescue pets set to take refuge in bay area shelters. >> we've been working on this with a coalition of bay area shelters for about a week. reporter: cats, dogs, landing at the hayward airport friday night. >> our goal was to move the animals that had already been in shelters or foster homes at the time of the fires. reporter: making way for what's expected to be an influx of lost and injured pets in wake of the wildfires. >> we are moving the animals here so they have a better chance of getting adopted and so that the animal welfare folks can start to adjust their programs and retool their programs to help with longer-term recovery issues. reporter: finding space for these new faces has been a challenge. >> we've been trying to figure

out how to place them with so -- shelters in the bay area because the reality is, although shelters are already full. reporter: that's where you can help out. >> as an animal is made available, it will go automatically on our website. if people are really interested in the maui dogs, start looking on monday because it will take a few days. we want them to decompress. reporter: she wants people to know the adoption fee for these little ones will go towards helping in maui. >> something that i'm really proud of. i've been out of the shelter for 20 years and this is something new. all the adoption fees are going to go directly back to maui humane. reporter: some of these faces will be showing up at an adoption event next weekend in berkeley. >> that's called bark and me out around the bok -- lock. probably 200 animals there. many of the hawaii animals will be part of that. >> welcome to the mainland.

reporter: tara campbell, abc 7 news. ama: sweet faces. new details tonight on the latest traffic mishap involving robo taxis in san francisco. this one includes a fire truck that hit a cruise vehicle with a passenger inside. they've agreed to a dam right -- dmv request that the company reduce its fleet of driverless car's while they investigate incidents. they have agreed to cut the number of cars on the road by half. this comes after last nights accident in san francisco and several other incidents we've reported on. leah melendez has the details on the latest crash including reaction from san francisco officials. reporter: this was the scene last night at the intersection of polk and turk street. >> can you dispatch a battalion chief. we've been involved in an accident versus a cruise vehicle. there was one person in the vehicle. >> did it involve a fire truck?

reporter: the fire truck was apparently headed southbound but had moved into the northbound lane, something trucks do to get around other cars. crews responded on social media. one of our cars entered the intersection on a green light and was struck by an emergency vehicle that appeared to be on route to an emergency scene. one of the firefighters involved in the accident told police what he claims the vehicle did at the intersection. he says it looked like it lurch. the california vehicle code says it's illel in cifornia not to yield the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle approaching with its lights and sirens. here's where the human element comes into play. if i'm driving this car and i hear sirens or icy flashing lights, there is no way that i'm going to move this car, even if i have the green light. still, it doesn't mean they get a pass. it's the responsibility of the fire department to make sure

that that intersection is free and clear. look at this video shot today at precisely the same intersection. cars have already pulled over and stopped. the fire truck moves to the wrong side of the road to get past them. as the truck moves through the intersection, it moves back into its lane right before going by a cruise vehicle which does not immediately stop like it is supposed to. it eventually comes to a complete stop but only after the fire truck has passed it. the mayor called for a meeting at city hall to hear from the fire chief. we were there. have you this accident? >> it's under investigation. reporter: the board president has cautioned, this could happen. he was at that meeting. >> it was a matter of time. i'm waiting for the police to determine fault. reporter: leah melendez, abc 7

news. ama: they issued a statement about the crash saying, the automatic vehicle did identify the risk of a collision and initiated a breaking maneuver but was ultimately unable to avoid the collision. we will continue to work in partnership with regulators and city departments on emergency management vehicle interactions to reduce the likelihood of incidents like these happening again. a mountain lion continues to make its presence felt in the san mateo area. the latest sighting and reaction from neighbors to the news. a pilot under pressure. without even leaving the airport. what led to this wild scene in the parking lot. up next, an unlikely turn of events for one of the bay area's biggest grocery chains. the pest problem that shut

before they will be allowed to reopen. >> there will need to be a facility assessment after lucky's addresses the issue at hand. we will need to address any structural modifications that may have taken place in order to prevent the rodents from entering the building. lucky's will need to be able to document for three consecutive days that there's no rodent activity on site. reporter: the parent company says they are working diligently to get the store up and running once again. >> i i'm sure it will be fixed soon. reporter: some shoppers say they will be taking their business elsewhere. >> i'm just going to go to safeway. [laughter] reporter: tim johns, abc 7 news. ama: residents of a san mateo neighborhood are on alert after several people spotted a mountain lion this morning. a resident took this picture of the cat running down the street between south delaware street and 101.

it was spotted in a backyard on east 16th avenue around 6:00 this morning and likely made its way down from the mountains via leslie creek. sightings are becoming more and more common in the area. officers searched the neighborhood but they did not spot that cat. the weekend is upon us and lots of crazy weather going on in california. let's get to sandhya patel. sandhya: this could be a devastating storm as it inches closer to southern california. we are just going to get some humidity and possibly a few showers. right now, live views from our tower cameras. they are looking lovely. visibility is good. we have some clouds off the coastline and a few high levels clouds coming in. showers and thunderstorms that develop in the afternoon hours but those have died down.

line behind other vehicles and starts chomping at the arm of the exit gate. moments later, on employee approaches the pilot which is scary. he hands over the acts when a second employee gets involved. police say the pilot told him he just hit his breaking point. that is scary. back here, new round of charges related to the scandals involving the police departments in antioch and pittsburgh. bribery and obstruction of justice charges. five officers are accused of the conspiracy. the four fbi indictments on thursday also include charges of civil rights violations. they allege some of the officers conspired and agreed to injure and intimidate residents of antioch. >> it will take years to find justice for the victims of these officers and of police agencies

that turned a blind eye to this misconduct and corruption. ama: the fbi says its investigation is still ongoing. a storeowner in dublin is in jail on several charges after an illegal weapons investigation. detectives executed a search warrant at dublin knives and found more than 2000 illegal switchblade knives, 40 rifles and handguns and other weapons. the owner was charged with possession of illegal firearms, child endangerment, and several additional charges. police found additional illegal weapons at his home and a storage facility in livermore. the giants began a road trip against the team with the best record in baseball. larry beil is here with sports. larry: the giants began a three-game series against the braves. their offense never made it all the way to atlanta. can you win a game with only two heads and 13 strikeouts? heads and 13 strikeouts? i used to wait to run my dishwasher 'til it was super full.

and so, when my brother and i kind of talk, we kinda like-- it doesn't seem like 50 years, it seems like maybe five? okay, maybe 10 years, but it doesn't seem that long a period of time. and one instance is we've just been having a lot of fun. the history or background over 50 years of making wine here in the middle of rutherford, is it kinda goes way back to my grandfather. my grandfather started an auto repair in 1926. my grandfather and my father worked together running the garage along with my grandmother and mother. it was truly a family affair. we were making about 10 barrels of cabernet and sauvignon blanc, and so pretty much everything was done by hand, and each year we grew a little bit. and then, as you make more wine, you have to go out and sell it. and so, my father would go out on the road to sell it,

and then my mother and grandmother would run the garage. the garage helped support the winery for the first 10, 12 years to kinda get it off the ground, 'cause as we were making wine and selling it, we'd make more wine. you make a barrel, you sell that, then you make two barrels and you sell that, then you make four barrels. and so, that took a lot of capital, and so that was coming out of the garage at the time. this is our visitor's center where our guests come when they first come on the property. we remodeled this, and the remodeling was finished in 2019. all of the wood that you see here including the lights is recycled or reclaimed. the barrels that make these lights came from our barrels. we have 60 or so acres in total here. a large portion of that is covered in vineyard. in addition to that, we have nine or so tasting rooms and other tasting areas, as well as gardens.
