6:00 pm
on abc7 news, the first sign of tropical storm hillary flashes across the sky of san diego. emergency officials say they're now getting reports of flooding in southern california. the sounds i heard we'll never ever, ever leave my head. a maui wildfire survivor shares her story as fire crews release an update on their efforts to put out the devastating fires. and a different kind of mentorship program launches in oakland. this one designed to build bridges between the community and police. abc7 news starts now. building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. prepare yourselves. we don't know what this rainstorm is going to do. we're expecting between five plus inches of rain. people in southern california and parts of the southwest are bracing for what forecasters say will be catastrophic and life threatening flooding.
6:01 pm
we start with developing news. hurricane hillary is expected to pummel the region as a rare tropical storm. here is a live look right now at the current situation in cabo san lucas. this is a live camera from cabo villas, a resort in mexico. mexico's government issued a hurricane warning for much of the baja california peninsula. a hurricane watch is also in effect for a portion of the baja, california peninsula's west coast. thank you for joining us. i'm karina nova here with abc7 weather anchor spencer christian. we are tracking hurricane hillary. you can see that right here on the graphics. so what is the latest on the storm's path? well, it's still a category two hurricane, which is a powerful storm. it's got maximum sustained winds of 100mph just off the west coast of baja california, moving northward and still expected to make landfall in southern california by tomorrow morning. wow. as a tropical storm, but still a tremendous rainmaker and possibly potentially a flood maker as well. well, i'll let you map it all out for us and i'll get out of your way, spencer. well, here's a look at the path,
6:02 pm
expected path of the storm that hasn't changed in the last several hours. by later tonight, 11 p.m. or so, it's expected to be a category one hurricane. but although it's losing its wind intensity, it's still going to be a tremendous rainfall. producer as it makes landfall tomorrow morning near san diego. and it's just going to plow through the southern half of the state going up toward the western portion of nevada as a tremendous, tremendously powerful storm that will dump 5 to 7in of rain in the areas that are hardest hit. those areas here in the purple, the darker colors, up to seven inches or more. the red areas will have about five inches of rain. so you can see the potential for that much rain falling in such a short period of time means that flooding widespread and severe flooding is quite likely. and looking at the reach of the successive rainfall, not just through the central or in the southern half of california, but all the way over into most of the state of nevada, most of the state of arizona northward into utah and all the way up into idaho. this storm will be a tremendous rain producer. but of course, our focus right
6:03 pm
now is on southern california, where it's expected to make landfall tomorrow morning. i'll have more details on this a little bit later. karina. all right, spencer, thank you. hillary has triggered california's first ever tropical storm warning, extending from the state's southern border to just north of los angeles. the storm has sped up and is moving faster than expected and is currently about 640 miles southeast of san diego. significant rain from the storm will arrive in california tomorrow. california has resources on the ready, including two crew members from the alameda county fire department deploying to riverside county. and they'll join a swift water rescue team. reporter leanne suter from our sister station in los angeles is live tonight in long beach and has the latest on the storm's impact. leanne. one of the areas of great concern here in southern california is for catalina island. catalina express now adding more boats to its schedule tonight to get everyone off of that island
6:04 pm
as quickly as possible, certainly before hurricane hillary hits. as you might imagine, time is of the essence just take a look and listen. we just needed to make sure that we were going to get home safe to san diego. we love being around the area, but also we need to get back just in case hillary does some damage. we are preparing to have enough boats to bring people back over today, but we really want people to take advantage of that today because tomorrow this hurricane is expected to hit landfall and we will really see the strong winds. and back on the mainland here, there's certainly a lot of concern for flooding in low lying areas here in long beach. crews have been helping residents pack up as many sandbags as possible. they've also built berms along the beach to try to prevent any of the flooding that would come in from the ocean. there certainly is so much concern here in southern california as for catalina island, they have issued an advisory, an urgent warning for
6:05 pm
everyone to leave the island as quickly as possible. they are especially concerned for those with medical conditions. the number one concern on the island will be the loss of power. they expect that could happen pretty quickly if there's any kind of flash flooding, i should say. they think that the power plant could flood quite easily. so that is why they are trying to get everyone off the island as quickly as possible. back live now here. as i said, catalina express adding extra boats to their schedule. every boat so far tonight has filled up. they are no more seats available. we are told there might be 1 or 2. they are now looking at possibly bringing in county fire boats, as well as the sheriff's department, to make sure that anyone who wants to get off of the island can do it before that storm hits. reporting live here in long beach, leanne suter, abc seven news. leanne, thank you. hopefully everyone can get off in time. the state isn't taking any chances as hurricane hillary steams forward for california. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard is here with a look at how much the golden state is
6:06 pm
getting ready. and cornell, a lot of people are preparing right now. they really are. karina and the national weather service says no tropical storm has made landfall in southern california since 1939. and because of that, officials are urging residents to prepare and stay safe. hillary nearing landfall on mexico's baja peninsula, bringing heavy rain, wind and rough seas, while hundreds of miles north batten down the hatches. communities near la are filling sand bags, preparing for hillary, which could bring epic rainfall rarely seen in southern california. i mean, it's going to be some rain. so you know, usually there's some flooding and the landslide tides and things like that. evacuation warnings have been issued for mountain communities in san bernardino county. i think people are a little bit in denial, my friend juliette is cutting her family. so cal vacation short and driving back home to phenix. but heavy rain was making that drive tough. we vacation short because when we looked at the pathway of the storm, we saw that it was going
6:07 pm
to track further eastward and being from the desert, we know water and the desert are not a good mix. heavy rain from this storm back at 2019 sent water rushing into palm springs. it's why many coachella valley neighbors are getting ready with sandbags, something they've never needed before. everybody is pulling together and helping one another because i think we think it's going to be a pretty big deal. oh, they ran out of sand at the fire department. some cities are running out of sand. so people have been driving into desert open space to fill sandbags. and near san diego, some stores have sold out of flashlights. fema has activated its national response coordination center. officials expect flooding lands, slides and power outages. so we're recognizing and encouraging people to take the time they can prepare. now, again, with this unprecedented storm, people may not be sure not how seriously they should take it. we're encouraging people to take this very seriously. my flight got canceled, but i found out this morning at 8 a.m.
6:08 pm
bay area native emily irion is trying to get back home to san diego after spending the weekend in the east bay. we have a family friend who's driving down to la tomorrow, so i think i might hop in the car and then maybe take the bus down to san diego. and emily says she has tickets for the san diego padres game on monday, but expects the game will be canceled. rained out and many public places in los angeles county will be closed on sunday and monday from beaches, playgrounds to hiking trails again, the biggest message from first responders be alert and be prepared. cornell barnard abc7 news. all right, cornell, thank you. and you can track hillary all weekend long. the hurricane tracker on abc7 news.com has details about where it's currently located. its strength and the impact on the bay area. we'll also havepecial coverage on our 24 over seven live stream when hillary reaches california starting at 4 p.m. tomorrow, new details on the maui wildfires. crews today say fire activity is
6:09 pm
now limited to isolated hot spots with much of the fires now at least 85% contained. the fires are now blamed for 114 deaths. that number continues to climb. abc news reporter melissa dionne has stories from survivors and how they're coping. more than 2000 buildings were destroyed on maui, another 500 damage as the long road to recovery begins. the governor promising criminal penalties for anyone trying to take advantage of the tragedy. the land in lahaina is reserved for its people as they return and rebuild. hawaii's first lady overcome with grief at the devastation tragic. it took less than a single day for us to lose line in the deadliest fire our country has seen in more than a century. among the victims, alfredo galliano, who made sure his family, tenants and neighbors escaped the flames. but he stayed behind. i know that he was trying to

let's get another check on the weather here. locally, of course, it's the weekend. people have plans and you, of course, are tracking hurricane hillary. spencer. so what is the latest with that? well, fortunately for the bay area, katrina, we expect minimal effect here on us. maybe some showers, maybe like a 10th of an inch of rain, but that's about it. but areas across the state from all about monterey county southward and eastward could get hammered by heavy flooding rain. right now, we're looking at breezy conditions across the bay area with 24 mile per hour surface winds here in san francisco and just a few clouds beginning to collect in the sky that had been blue for most of the day. 63 degrees in san francisco right now, 668 in oakland. we've got low to mid 70s at mountain view, san jose, palo alto and 63 at half moon bay. nice view at emeryville. you can see lots of blue sky there looking across the bay. it is 74 and santa rosa and napa right now 81 in novato and low 80s at fairfield, concord and livermore. one more live view from our our east bay hills camera looking toward mount diablo and we see just a few clouds off in the

distance there. otherwise it's a sunny afternoon or evening right now. these are our forecast headlines. low clouds, fog and patchy drizzle will develop overnight and during the early morning hours will see some lingering patchy drizzle and lots of clouds warm and humid. tomorrow i isolated showers are possible tomorrow as the storms outer band does get a little bit closer to the bay area. but again, no significant effect from hurricane or by then tropical storm hillary expected in the bay area. still humid with a chance of showers through monday here in the bay area. now for tonight, it's going to be a little bit muggy and mild with overnight lows, mainly in the low to mid 60s and an increase in clouds and humidity. of course, tomorrow that increase in humidity continues. still, it's going to be hot in our inland areas where you'll see highs in the mid or maybe even excuse me, maybe even mid to upper 90s in the inland east bay, low to mid 80s around the bay shoreline and on the coast upper 60s to about 70 degrees. now let's skip ahead and take a look at our forecast animation going through the day tomorrow you'll see those clouds beginning to increase
6:21 pm
significantly late in the afternoon into the evening hours and then into monday. notice we'll start to get pockets of showers, mainly light showers, where there could be some brief downpours embedded in those showers and that of course, means that we could see just minimal measurable rainfall, a few hundredths of an inch, possibly up to a quarter of an inch. here's the accuweather seven day forecast after we get through the humidity and the showers on monday, we start to dry out, get a little bit warmer, a little bit sunnier going into midweek. look for wednesday to be the hottest day with inland highs in the upper 90s mid 80s around the bay shoreline and then we'll have gradual tapering off of the heat going into the end of the week. now sports from abc7 news. good evening. 49 ers fans can collect exh whew brock purdy made his first start since injuring himself in the nfc championship game and he looked spectacular. purdy completed his first pass for 25 yards, then proceeded to lead the 49 ers down the field for a 20 yard field goal. all in all, purdy was four of
