>> now, from abc 7, live breaking news. >> stay safe, stay home and stay informed. this is an unprecedented weather event. >> the first tropical storm to hit california in more than 20 years has arrived. tonight, the south end of the state is feeling the effects of hillary. thank you for joining us on abc seven news at 6:00. i am j.r. stone. let's get right to the latest on hillary. much of southern california is getting a heavy soaking right now. three inches of rain architected tonight. flood warnings are in effect for los angeles county. los angeles authorities are scribbling to get the homeless off the streets and into shelters. airlines have canceled about a thousand flights that were supposed to be heading into or out of the area and the l.a. unified school district announced this afternoon that all schools will be closed tomorrow, and allstate beaches in san diego and orange counties

are closed as a precaution. matt rivers is in san diego with more on hillary. >> as tropical storm hilary bears down on southern california, millions of people in the storm's path are facing potentially catastrophic and life-threatening conditions. >> this storm is expected to have significant impacts within the area. which will include flash flooding, coastal flooding, and erosion. dangerous rip currents and high seas. >> california under a state of emergency, hillary is the first tropical storm to hit the state since 1997. >> our message today is clear. stay safe, stay home, and stay informed. this is an unprecedented weather event. >> residents have been preparing for the storm. >> the world is crazy and you just have to plan ahead. >> gathering sandbags and stocking up on supplies. >> i want to make sure that our

customers are prepared for prolonged outages. we are hoping we can get to everything and get all customers back on very quickly, but i just want to make sure that the customers are prepared. >> evacuation orders issued for san bernardino county, officials telling people to be prepared for more evacuations. >> if an officer is knocking at your door, please answer and listen intently to their instructions. they are there for you and your safety. >> hillary is suspected to continue weakening as it moves into death valley sunday evening, dumping as much as 3-6 inches of rain in the area. >> according to climate change projections, despite how rare tropical systems like this are, these projections show that there could be more extreme rainfall from tropical systems like this one in this part of the country by the end of the century. matt rivers, abc7news. >> spencer christian joins us live now, tracking hillary's

progress as it continues to move across some the california. >> i just want to point out the word weakening, because it is losing wind intensity, but that does not mean it is weakening in terms of the amount of rainfall. we have seen the rainfall -- devastation that rainfall can cause. the storm has entered some california and is moving at a rapid pace north or due north over the southern half of the state, and by 11:00 tonight, it will be over the borderline into nevada, just north of las vegas as a matter of fact. still, it's a tremendous rain producer and continues overnight through tomorrow morning all the way into southwestern idaho and oregon. the areas in red and yellow will be hard-hit by the rainfall, red areas around palm springs and san diego, 7-10 inches of rain likely. more rain than they typically get any year. now we're talking about that

much rain in 24-48 hours. all the way up to southern nevada, where talking 3-5 inches of rainfall, more than they receive in a year. we will keep track of this and keep you updated on what the effect is on souther california. >> thank you so much. as the tropical storm is making its way into southern california, the los angeles ares of small-midsize parkway. -- earthquakes. 5.1 magnitude was the largest, strike -- striking at 4:280 five this afternoon. no reports or serious damage. it was followedat least six aftershocks in the 3.0 range, at least one seismologist says there is no connection between the tropical storm and those quakes. the bay area is feeling the ripple effects of hillary through flight delays and cancellations had many bay area

related to his position of a legend classified documents, files that they say he took when he left the white house. those charges range from unlawful retention of national defense information to various obstruction related offenses. selena wang has details. >> former president trump has insisted he declassified all of the documents he took from the white house before he left office. sources tell us that the former chief of staff mark meadows told special counsel jack smith's investigators that he had no idea trump had brought classified documents with him to mar-a-lago. and he said he could not recall trump ever ordering the declassification of broad sets of classified materials before leaving the white house. >> this recording shows exactly why the trump team fought to keep metals from testifying and undercuts one of his main public arguments that he has been making, that he declassified all of these argument -- documents before he took them from the white house. >> sources say that when those

>> we are joined now by spencer christian, i would tell you, i know the situation down in southern california, but when you see humidity up here in northern california, it is also concerning. >> it is. it feels like east coast weather here. it's getting warmer and we have high humidity here for about three or four days, that muggy feeling, but not -- it's nothing compared to being hit by that storm. his a look at what is happening in the bay area with our winds just breezy as we would expect this time of the day, gusty around san jose, and it's quite a bit warmer right now that at

this time yesterday all across the region. 10-20 degrees warmer. in san francisco it 72 degrees, 79 degrees in oakland, low 90's in san jose and palo alto, 64 degrees at half moon bay. looking westward from emeryville, blue sky there, 88 degrees in novato and san jose, low 90's at fairfield, concord and livermore. a great day on the santa cruz beach as evidenced by the people at the beach. these are the forecast headlines, increasing throughout , scattered light showers develop overnight, cooler tomorrow with a few more showers, dryer with much warmer weather by midweek. our overnight forecast and mission looks like this, we have a few pockets of scattered light showers, and some of this is being caused by the remnants of the tropical storm moving up through the eastern section of northern california, but midmorning we might see a few showers that might be heavier.

ralph downpours are possible, that going away, as more of the remnants move north, though still towards the central valley where we see a few downpours which might come as close as livermore or part of the diablo range and then we dry out a bit. overnight those continue with conditions in the low-mid 60's. upper 70's to near 80 around the bay shoreline, north bay hives low-mid 70's, mid-80's in the warmest region, in the accuweather 7-day forecast you get a little bit warmer on to say, are warmest day will likely be wednesday with upper 90's in the, upper 80's where the bay shoreline, hotter inland on thursday, but a sharp cooldown occurs on friday, saturday and into next weekend. >> now supports from abc7news. >> good evening. this could be the stretch right
