spared here's the latest tonight. currently the storm is turning over the greater metropolitan los angeles area. the big concern here, life-threatening flooding and mudslides. tonight, one man is dead after being swept away in mexico. emergency crews in california have rescued at least 12 people feared nine or pulled from a riverbed in san diego and there were three swift water rescue's in palm springs. lausd and palm springs schools will be closed monday. governor gavin newsom was declared a state of emergency with the storms spoke to just how rare this is. >> with all those rain bombs and atmospheric rivers, december, january, february, march, certainly interesting times. tornadoes, lightning strikes. calfire worried about wildfires. that is because of the wins and not just the tornadoes. i walk out of the oes office of emergency services in san bernardino and check my phone and learned about an earthquake.

j.r.: we have live team coverage tracking the current path of hilary and the damage already done tonight. we will get to abc7 news reporter tim john standing by in a couple of minutes. let's get over to spencer christian tracking those conditions right now. spencer: things are changing in terms of where the storm is and which way is going as we speak. here's the latest. has moved north of los angeles right now and moving through the central valley up into the central sierra mountain range and just about ready to approach the state line, border between california and nevada. it is expected to move into nevada shortly after midnight and during the early morning hours and continue north up to east of reno by about 5:00 tomorrow morning. by that time, it will not be a tropical storm just depression. it still has tropical storm strength and a structure but not the wind intensity we are looking at but the copious amounts of rainfall, dangerous

amounts that the storm has produced so far and will continue to produce. the hardest hit areas of southern and central california from l.a. down to palm springs, san diego and now up through the central sierra. we are looking at 5-7 inches of rainfall generally and 7-10 and hardest hit areas. that is a lot in a short 24-40 eight hour period and you can see why there's so much concern about massive flooding right now. j.r.: some of the most serious storm damage we have seen today has been in the palm springs area. take a look at this golf course. overrun by water and out looking like a swamp. we now go to abc news reporter alex stone with a look at this historic storms affect in southern california. alex: more than 42 million americans under tropical storm warnings as hilary moves north. the heavy rainfall causing flooding is in many areas. >> stay safe, stay informed, and stay home. alex: the storm made landfall in

baja, california and mexico and it shows flooded streets with the water moving through into rosalie up, mexico. in los angeles, several lanes of the 101 freeway near sherman oaks flooded. >> this truck driver taking chances through the floodwater. alex: driving very dangerous and leading to crashes. head of the storm, authorities urged people on catalina island to evacuate spared multiple flash flood warning's in effect across the area. >> it continues to come down here in cathedral city and the tropical rain's this desert town do not match. in palm springs they are seeing flooding tonight spared >> it does not absorb water very well. extreme rainfall events like this in dangerous flash flooding can develop faster sending massive amounts of rain and debris flowing. alex: many people filled sandbags and up on supplies. >> hoping for the best. alex: crews have billed --

sand burns or long beach. some people taken advantage of the high surf. in the midst of the storm, los angeles was hit by 5.1 magnitude earthquake. >> i'm sorry to interrupt you. our studio is shaking right now so we are dealing with a tropical storm and it appears an earthquake. >> this is the first time we have had a magnitude five since 1932 in exactly this location. alex: no reports of damage or injuries from the quake and experts say it was not related to the severe weather. alex stone, abc news in los angeles. j.r.: new tonight bergen county county fire it will be deploying its blood search and rescue team 11 to kern county tonight. these were photos shared with the -- with us about the equipment. this crew is made up of 16 people with petaluma and santa rosa members as well. local help is not just coming from the north bay but it is an

all hands on deck efforts. tim johns is live in the newsroom this evening with more on the bay areas rescue response and the impacts we are seeing here from the storm. tim: jr, we have seen it all right there. all of southern california is feeling the impact of the storm right now from the coast adventure all the way to the desert of palm springs. we had a nice state and the bay area today but hilary's effects could be felt and ruth keller -- north cap 22. -- north california too. hilary made landfall across several counties. aerial video from our sister station abc7 and los angeles shows flooded streets and waterways throughout the city of a angels. tracy is the program manager for fema's california task force four. she says open fire department has sent a team to riverside county to help first responders. >> we sponsored one with water

team which includes 16 personnel and boats in the transportation to go and respond to anything that the local agency has for us. tim: early sunday, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake also struck in ventura county. >> is a combination of a whole bunch of. things happening at the same time. you're used to it in the state of california. tim: also causing problems in the bay area. the oakland airport, dozens of flights were canceled on sunday. the delays are felt across the bay at sfo two. many passengers were left wondering when they might be able to take off. >> i was afraid of this but i was hoping that we would prevail. tim: despite the troubles several travelers are trying to keep the hope alive. >> fingers crossed. we hope we can make it there tonight. tim: in san francisco, tim johns. abc7news. j.r.: let's focus on the travel

troubles as we look like out at sfo tonight. when you add it all up, hundreds of flights and countless passengers from oakland to chicago are being affected by the storms. southwest airlines, the busiest carrier for inter-california or flights saw 714 flights canceled today. a majority of them operating out of southern california. if you are planning to fly tomorrow, it is best to check with your airline on your flight status. united airlines has issued a hurricane travel waiver for southern california airports. that has never happened before. travelers booked on sunday and monday flights can reschedule without having to pay change fees. the nine affected airports are on your screen. bakersfield, burbank, lax, ontario, palm springs, san diego, san luis obispo and orange county. barbara lee says the federal government stands ready to help those who need help from the

effects of the storm. >> i stand ready to do everything i can do personally in my capacity as a member of the house appropriations committee to make sure that lives are saved and that people do not -- are not negatively impacted by this tropical storm. j.r.: speaking with cnn this evening from oakland, kroger's moon -- congress womanly said if californians need federal relief running she will do everything possible to the way for that's. today's storm is does not get tropical storms on shore all that often. you are looking at video from the archives of the last tropical storm to make landfall in california on september 1939. that storm killed 100 people and made landfall in long beach and dumped more than 5.5 inches of rain in l.a.. it caused $2 million in damage then or $44 million in today's

j.r.: we are back with a live look at santa monica college. the storm seems to be coming down along the coast and that is good news. tropical storm hilary made landfall earlier today bringing with it heavy downpours, flash flooding and powerful winds. l.a. unified has canceled classes for tomorrow. the university of southern california says tonight it's first day of classes tomorrow will go on as planned. usc is optimistic the worst of the storm is over. look at this. part of a road gave way in santa clarita north of l.a.. in canyon road partially collapsed when floodwaters washed away part of the street. the city says the road is closed for the foreseeable future. also happening now, a state of emergency is now in place in washington for wildfires burning

in the northern end of the state . at least one person has been killed and hundreds of buildings have been destroyed. >> there is a beast at our doo and it is the beast of climate change. it seems like the whole world is on fire today. j.r.: the wildfires have burned more than 20,000 acres in spokane county with no containment on any of the fires. wildfires in canada this weekend also forced thousands to evacuate from the capital of the northwest territories. now to the wildfire recovery on the island of bali -- on maui. the president and first lady will be touring damage and meeting with local officials as we see new dramatic video showing what firefighters were up against when the flames overtook lahaina. now at 114.

hawaii governor josh green says that sadly the remains of some of the dead may never be recovered. >> because of the temperature of the fire, the remains of those who have died in some cases may be impossible to recover meaningfully. so, there are going to be people that are lost forever. j.r.: it is also estimated that more than 1000 people are still missing. there is still no official word on what started the fires. happening tomorrow tri-city animal shelter in fremont is hosting a pet adoption event. the event will feature more than 80 shelter dogs and cats that were flown in from maui following the wildfires. a handful of bay area shelters opened up space including berkeley humane, marin humane, the animal rescue foundation, the east bay spca, and friends of alameda animal shelter. visit the tri-city animal shelter website for more information. if you would like to help with

the maui wildfire relief efforts, you can make a $10 donation to the red cross by texting red cross to call one 800 red cross. any donation is appreciated to keep the island of maui strong. spencer christian right now with the weather. we had a nice day today here but a lot of people dealing with tough times. spencer: it is so sad to see what is going on in southern california and other areas devastated by heavy rainfall from tropical storm hilary. in the bay area, we are happy to report that things are relatively calm and will remain that way probably as the effect of the storm on the bay area will be minimal. we are looking at a live doppler 7 looping mh and you can see if you pockets of light showers passing through parts of the north bay but the real action is in the central valley right now and moving to the sierra where the storm its continuing to northward push. in the bay area we have come winds for the most part, 5-10

miles per hour. it is quite a bit warmer across the region than 24 hours ago. a degrees warmer and hayward and livermore. a live view on the tower looking over san francisco. current temperatures are 63 the city. oakland is 69. mid 70's and mountain view, san jose and palo alto. 59 at half moon bay. com conditions with the camera -- calm conditions with the camera view. mainly clear skies but some clouds developing. 73 in santa rosa. 75 at napa. fairfield is 76. low 80's and concorde and livermore. we are looking across the bay waters toward the bay bridge and these are the forecast headlines. increasing clouds overnights and scattered light showers are likely. they expect cloudier showers due overnight hours. drier and warmer weather by midweek. this is the forecast animation starting at midnight. pockets of light showers that

will be scattered around the bay area between now and 5:00 a.m.. in the later morning hours more concentrated showers pushing mainly the north bay and things calm down in the afternoon but heavy downpours move northward through the central valley. they may hit areas like livermore or the diablo range until things settle down dry out tomorrow night. the overnight lows in the bay area, mainly in the mid 60's. pretty mild and humid and perhaps uncomfortable in some areas. tomorrow humid as well with highs in the mid 60's in the coast guard mid to upper 70's around the bayshore loaned -- shoreline. it will be drier and sunnier on tuesday. warmer on wednesday as we expect the inland highs to reach into the upper 90's, mid to upper 80's around the bay shoreline. a gradual cooldown going into the end of the week and by the end of the week we will see much cooler weather with high

christian. spencer: has moved north of los angeles and palm springs and those major population centers in southern california. it is still a powerful storm dumping heavy devastating flooding rains on much of the state and moving towards nevada. we went on the air at 11:00 p.m. and it already moved north of los angeles. by 1:00 a.m. we expect it to be at the state line between california and nevada. during the early morning hours, it will move up northward just east of reno and northwest nevada. then as a tropical depression and although it is lost its tropical storm status, the rainfall will be impressive as it plows northward through nevada tomorrow. the excessive rain has a reach that is remarkable. the areas in red are the hardest hit areas where it is 7 inches or more of rain. the yellow area

3-5 inches of rain that fell from this storm. the green is lesser amounts but still producing flooding and reaching through the entire state of nevada, and arizona and up into utah and idaho. this is still a powerful storm and potentially dangerous one, jr and we will keep track of it for you. j.r.: widespread with all the states involved. let's take live look from santa monica as hilary had north. the storm has been especially dangerous for the large unhoused population in southern california. abc7 news reporter tara campbell has more on the storm response plus a palm springs resident is now stuck until the floodwaters recede. tara: tropical storm hilary making its mark on southern california. dumping heavy rains and whipping winds across the state. flood warnings still in effect from san diego up to los angeles. >> hundreds of national guard's men and women, 350 deployed 11

counties. tara: the downpour is triggering mudslides with huge boulders landing on interstate in san diego. north of los angeles, mud and debris at onto this freeway. people piling up sandbags to protect their homes. >> i lived here for 30 years and it has steadily gotten worse when we have rain showers and as backing up from the storm drains. >> stay safe, stay home, and stay informed. tara: the los angeles mayor is also trying to reach the unhoused. >> we have tens of thousands of people who are homeless we are working with county partners, county housing services, homeless services agencies to get people into shelters. tara: emergency crews taking flight over low-lying areas, warning of the dangers. >> we are trying to make sure individuals who are on the riverbeds do not get compromised and trapped. tara: meanwhile, inland, palm springs getting pummeled.

he does not want to stand up there and face the music. >> no issue with whatever decision he wants to make. if he is on their great. if not i'm fine with that. j.r.: wednesday's gop debate will take place in milwaukee. our next abc7 advancer at 11:00 is in the way of at a more affordable housing in california. governor newsom could be signing a new bill into law this week, speeding up construction by streamlining the environmental review process. senate bill 106 is authored by state senator dave cortese from san jose. it is on governor newsom's desk awaiting his signature. it would cut repetitive state environmental quality act reviews on new housing construction if signed into law. it would let local governments bypass some radios if and public agency has already done one. monterey was the place to be if you love looking at classic old cars worth a lots of money.

we are not going through what southern california and central california are going through right now with the effects of tropical storm hilary. we have some rain to the east over the central valley. some of that me push a few showers into the bay area overnight. the overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 60's. we will feel humidity overnight which would be uncomfortable. tomorrow the highs will be in the mid 60's along the coast, mid 70's along the bay shoreline, mid 80's inland. the humidity will be there making it feel muggy. we can expect if you passing showers tomorrow. here's the forecast animation showing a few light showers developing in the early morning hours and more concentrated showers later in the afternoon tomorrow. especially to the east over the central valley. much of that will not hit the bay area. here's accuweather 7-day forecast. warming up and drying out tuesday. much warmer on wednesday with the inland highs in the upper 90's. not much change on thursday but

has ever happened in my life. i have lived here for 30 years. it is not just molly. i have never seen devastation like this. i have been to vietnam, work with the military and soldiers in the hospitals and a lot of things. i have been to a lot of trauma areas, but i've never seen devastation through such a beautiful community as we are going through right now. we just need a lot of help from a lot of people. not just on the island. we need help on the mainland. casey: help is the key here. you are stepping up allowing families to move into your rental properties and i know you do not want to make this about you but the platform invoice you have, the message that you can send is key. that help is needed. >> there are thousands of people homeless without anything, without any money. they walked away with nothing really. we are helping as many as we can but we can only do six families

at this point. there are thousands of families that need help. so we are doing the best that we can to help and i think most people on the island are. it is a wonderful island and people really help each other here. they always have. the locals are wonderful people, the hawaiians are wonderful people. casey: i know people are going to need help for a long time and build back. do you think how long you will host these families? >> as long as we can help and i think everybody on the island hills the same way. as long as it takes, we are here to help the best that we can. we will continue to do that. casey: you and your wife joy have stepped up and your daughter is doing incredible work. can you tell us about that? case>> facility and they have a kitchen there and she is a chef. she has been making over 1000 meals a day for homeless people to come. the parking lot is full from

morning until night. they just continue to cook and do what they can to help. casey: everybody needs so much. what is your best advice people that are not on the island. what can i do to help people in the most effective way possible? >> encourage people to send what they can to help the homeless people here in the devastation we are in right now. that would be the main thing. not to, unless you are a professional of some sort. don't come to the island necessarily but support the organizations and the money that we need to get through this thing together. >> and our economy is based on tourism. so, some people are saying not to come and right now, that is true. but later on, we want people to come because people have lost their jobs are going to need new jobs. they're going to be able to make an income. the tourism will be important in

the long run. >> but not at this particular time. casey: keep an eye out for when things are more under control. i was in maui last month and is staggering to think that a lot of what we knew of it will never be the same but there's so much beauty in so many places still untouched by the fire. i know people come back. >> maui is the best. it is the most fearful place i have ever been to. it is part of america which is the reason we are here enjoying this and we have enjoyed it for so many years. now it is our turn to step up and try to help other people. casey: before the interview i asked his wife joy if there were any charities they wanted to recommend? here's a list she gave me. maui strong through the hawaii community foundation, world central kitchen, the maui humane society and food bank. these are the best ways for people to help get back to the island that has given so much joy to us.
