outside her store later on this monday morning. >> the growing push for a four day work week and the call to keep workers pay the same and meet the new fastest man in the world. >> the record he's now hoping to speed past. from york. >> this is america. this morning. >> good monday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. good morning. >> i'm morgan norwood in for rhiannon and we begin with the weather emergency unfolding in parts of the southwest. a rare and powerful storm triggering life threatening floods overnight. >> tropical storm hillary slammed southern california. it's the first tropical storm to hit that region since 1997. some places are expected to get a year's worth of rain in a matter of hours. >> at least one person reported missing overnight as some people in the mountains shelter in place this morning. dramatic new video showing a massive mudflow in the san bernardino mountains . firefighters running to safety

as the boulder filled mudslide barreled toward their station, taking out trees and anything in its path. it will be. reports say those firefighters were not injured, but mudslides appear to be cutting off. mountain community in the area. >> some locals cutting off station 99 from the lower portions of forest falls. you have 5 to 700 people, approximately, residents that are having to shelter in their place. >> overnight. the national weather service warning of life threatening flooding along the malibu coastline with reports of water rescues in the nearby community of spanish hills as what's left of hurricane hillary slammed southern california. forecasters have warned of potentially catastrophic mudslides from the storm. mud and water also flowing into this desert community last night near san bernardino, palm springs could see an entire year's worth of rain just from the storm in the center of palm springs.

>> all these palm trees and their palm froms are flying all over the place. a tropical storm going through the middle of a california desert. >> several records for daily rainfall. amounts were broken yesterday in the los angeles area where public schools are closed today. the storm made landfall in baja, california, mexico. video shows fast moving floodwaters swamping streets, washing away vehicles and just as california braces for the storm, these lights swaying as los angeles was hit with a 5.1 magnitude earthquake. >> chief, i'm really sorry to interrupt you right now. >> our our studio is shaking right now. >> so not only are we dealing with a tropical storm, but it appears we are now dealing with an earthquake. >> this is the first time we've had a magnitude five since 1932, in exactly this location. >> there were no reports of any damage or injuries from the quake. and experts say it is not related to the severe weather. and that storm also impacting air travel nationwide with more than 1000 flights canceled as of

late yesterday. >> we turn now to dramatic new video from the early hours of the devastating fires in maui. just as president biden prepares to visit today. but first, there's another fire emergency unfolding, this one in washington state this morning. the wildfire emergency in eastern washington turning more deadly. at least two people have now died and hundreds of buildings are destroyed as three fires burn out of control. the largest, the gray fire, is being fueled by dry grass and wheat fields, forcing the closing of interstate 90 in spokane. >> and this has been horrendous fires the aridity, the wind, this fire moved seven miles in one afternoon. >> thousands of people have been forced to evacuate. some returning to the town of silver lake to find out they've lost everything. >> this is mom's house. >> yeah, that's not your mom's house. stick up. it's all right, man. >> it comes as new video surfaces of the wildfires on maui showing what firefighters faced as they arrived to the historic town of lahaina

engulfed by the fire. at one point, flames surround a fire engine before firefighters are able to escape. in his first national interview since the fires, maui's fire chief getting emotional. >> the firefighters are hurting . this is their community. this is their home. these are their people. nobody in our department is unaffected by this. we care about our firefighters first and our community as well. and if they can't go to work in a healthy way, then it's difficult for them to surf. >> officials say 85% of the destroyed area on maui has now been searched. president biden will see the devastation firsthand today, meeting with survivors here, their stories and provide a sense of hope and assurance that the federal government is going to be with them. >> as he has directed. and we will continue to bring in resources to support the requests of the governor and the needs as they go through their recovery process. local residents have been critical of the federal response, including the $700 relief checks announced by fema.

>> some saying that's not nearly enough to begin rebuilding their lives. and biden himself was criticized for saying no comment last week when reporters asked him about the rising death toll, which now stands at least 114 there is hope and resilience amid the rubble worship still gathered for sunday service at a coffee house 23 miles away from their now destroyed church. and the area's famed 150 year old banyan tree is still standing. and according to experts, still alive, undergoing life saving treatment. we checked underneath the bark of all of all the lower trunks on the tree, and we found that there's still live tissue. >> we didn't see any major charring or scarring of the tree . >> five more fire victims were identified yesterday. meanwhile, fema says it's distributed nearly $4 million so far to about 1600. maui residents. >> and back here on the east coast, a 200 acre wildfire is burning in southern new jersey. it started yesterday in a state

forest about 25 miles east of philly. no injuries were reported and so far, no damage to any buildings. the fbi is searching for a member of the proud boys facing serious prison time for his role in the january six attack on the capitol. christopher john wall was supposed to be sentenced on friday for attacking police with pepper spray gel. prosecutors have recommended a 14 year prison sentence for him. he's been under house arrest in florida. >> now to politics. former president trump has issued a new statement about this week's highly anticipated republican primary debate. abc's justin finch is here now with the very latest. justin, good morning, andrew. >> good morning. the former president has announced he will not be participating in the first republican presidential debate, which is this wednesday . trump writing on his social media app, truth social quote the public knows who i am and what a successful presidency i had. i will therefore not be doing the debates, polls show

trump holding a huge lead over his primary rivals, a new cbs poll showing he's the preferred candidate for 62% of republican voters. his closest rival, florida governor ron desantis, at 16. all other candidates are at less than 10. trump is apparently planning to counter program wednesday night's debate source say he's already taped an online interview with former fox news host tucker carlson. in the meantime, trump is expected to surrender to authorities in georgia later this week in the 2020 election. interference case. he's facing four indictments with 91 charges in total. >> andrew. all right. justin, sir. trump will not be at the debate. his opponents will be. thank you. >> well, ukraine is getting more air power to take on russian forces. dozens of f-16 fighter jets from denmark and the netherlands. president zelensky visited both countries and climbed into the cockpit himself . the first f-16s are expected

died. the time and calls were not made public. carmona later honored him on social media, saying her dad gave her the strength to accomplish something truly unique. a pencil dentist faces life in prison when he's sentenced today for killing his wife during an african safari trip. >> prosecutors also seeking $25 million in restitution from larry rudolph. he was also convicted of mail fraud after cashing in $5 million in life insurance policies on bianca rudolph. he claims she accidentally shot herself during the trip back in 2016. >> we're learning more about a california woman allegedly killed because she displayed a pride flag outside of her store. abc's derek dennis has the latest. >> this morning, authorities in california are investigating what they say could be a hate crime. a california store owner in lake arrowhead, a mountain community east of la, was shot and killed, allegedly by a man who took issue with a pride flag hanging in her store. california's governor saying this is absolutely horrific.

this disgusting hate has no place in california. >> new folks moving into town, new couples, new lgbtq families. they were concerned about moving up here. and we hear stories about them driving by her store and seeing the flags and feeling so welcome. they immediately felt the acceptance and were no longer afraid to be up here. and lori did that for them. >> authorities say the suspect who has not been publicly identified, was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies during a confrontation. the victim, 66 year old laura ann carlton, leaves behind a husband and nine children. the lake arrowhead lgbtq organization saying lori did not identify as lgbtq+ but spent her time helping and advocating for everyone in the community. she will be truly missed. her death comes during a year in which authorities say hate crimes against the lgbtq community have spiked in california and elsewhere, the anti-defamation league, citing an increase in rhetoric and certain legislation nationwide. the aclu now tracking 491 pieces

over the weekend after a long standing pulmonary issue. the actor underwent a double lung transplant back in 2020. jones's first big role came in 1994 and the play holiday heart. he was 66. >> we turn now to the nfl facing even more scrutiny when it comes to player safety. and this is only the preseason this morning. the nfl on alert after two frightening injuries slammed in front of patriots rookie cornerback isaiah bolden and buccaneers backup quarterback john wolford. both taken off the field on stretchers this weekend . the patriots game against the packers was called off with just over ten minutes left in the fourth quarter after this play in which bolden seen here on the bottom left of your screen, collided with a teammate that collision leaving him immobilized players from both teams kneeling and prayer visibly shaken. bolden spent the night in the hospital. a source tells espn he suffered a concussion. >> it's a reminder that the pre-season is the most dangerous time to be playing football. according to the statistics,
