at five of the destruction left in southern california. as we track the storm heading north through nevada this morning. >> and with several flights in and out of southern california disrupted, we are feeling the ripple effects of hillary right here in the bay area. but help is on the way. the local service is now in route to help those impacted by the storms. >> and more devastating images from survivors of the maui wildfire. president biden heading to the island today as hundreds of people remain unaccounted for. good morning. it is monday, august 21st. >> then start the check of our forecast with francis. >> yeah, let's find out where hillary is right now. i'll show you that with our maps. post-tropical hillary winds at around 35mph and it's going to be moving north over the next few hours. you can tell it's southeast of reno, east of san francisco. so what does that mean for us today in the bay area as this storm continues to track north over the next few hours? it's going to bring us cloudier weather cooler temperatures this afternoon and a chance of showers and even the

possibility of a thunderstorm. but notice as we show you the rain forecast, the rain is generally to our north and our east. in fact, we'll see scattered showers could be heavy at times through the stockton area, but rainfall estimates for the immediate bay area is little to none. we may get a few hundreds in some spots. ukee may get for hundreds of an inch. so i'll let you know what you can expect because we also have some changes midweek. >> reggi frances, thank you. now to the historic storm that swept through southern california. the la area seeing major damage and flood waters overnight. storm alert stayed in effect for millions as tropical storm hillary moves north, but already multiple daily rainfall records have been shattered in the southwestern part of the state and let's look at this now. new video into our newsroom this morning. this was the scene overnight in cathedral city. this is just outside of palm springs roads are flooded. and as you can see, cars have just been abandoned in this video,

it's clear how fast and strong the flash flood is pushing through the area. jobina at the live desk this morning with more high jobina. >> hi, reggie. thank you, hillary is the first tropical storm to hit california in more than at eight decades. and much of the damage is expected to become clear at daybreak after hillary pushed into southern california with fierce winds and heavy downpours. the national hurricane center says hillary is now a post-tropical cyclone that's expected to produce heavy rains and high winds as it continues to move through the southwestern us, bringing life-threatening flooding and gusty winds. one man is dead after being swept away in mexico. we've also seen at least a dozen rescues in san diego and palm springs, east bay. congresswoman barbara lee spoke to cnn from oakland last night saying the federal government is ready to help. >> i stand ready to do everything i can do personally in my capacity as a member of the house appropriations committee to make sure that

lives are saved and that people do not are not negatively impacted by this tropical storm . and so this is a moment where everyone is working together to make sure that we provide the mitigation efforts and the emergency prepare and the funding to make sure that california is not and its residents are okay after this devastating storm. >> flood watches remain in place for over 25 million people from southern california to northern idaho. the los angeles unified school district, which is the nation's second largest school district, will be closed today because of hillary sobel campuses in the pasadena unified school district and also the san diego unified school district. >> thank you, jobina. some of the most serious storm damage we've seen has been in the palm springs area. if you look at this video, you can see this golf course overrun by water. it looks more like a river. now, desert neighborhoods have also been left underwater. and you

can see there were also intense winds as that storm moved through multiple flash flood warnings have been issued across the region and in san diego, the storm is being blamed for causing these boulders to fall onto the road on interstate eight. an imperial county. that portion of the highway was closed yesterday. so crews could remove the boulders off the roadway. >> marin county fire says it'll be deploying as flood search and rescue team to kern county. these are photos shared with us with some of the equipment they're going to use. this is not just a marin county based crew. it's made up of 16 people with petaluma and santa rosa members to local help is not just coming from the north bay. it's an all hands on deck effort . and abc7 news reporter amanda castillo live this morning with more on the bay area's rescue response and the impact that we're seeing here from the storm. hi, amanda. >> hi, reggie. yeah, after days of anticipation, we saw hillary make landfall over several southern california counties as as we've detailed this morning.

and so we're also feeling the ripple effect here in the bay area, not just when it comes to travel, but also when it comes to teams of first responders. i checked earlier this morning and flightaware in is showing that in the last 24 hours, it attracted dozens of delays and cancellations between the bay area's three major airports. certainly not all disruptions are due to hillary, but we know airlines have issued waivers specific to the storm. and the program manager for fema's california task force force, several bay area agencies are deploying teams to assist members of the oakland fire department are down in riverside county to help local first responders. california task force four has even sponsored one swift water type one team. this is what reggie was talking about. includes 16 personnel boats and their transportation to go and respond to anything that the local agency needs them to do. and beyond hillary's impacts, crews were also dealing with a 5.1 magnitude earthquake yesterday morning as well, which struck in ventura county.

is currently located, its strength and the impact on the bay area. you can also check in on live updates and forecasts with the abc7 bay area app. wherever you stream san francisco crews are helping battle multiple wildfires burning along the california oregon border. >> the smith river complex, as you can see here, it's made up of 12 fires covering nearly 7600 acres in six rivers national forest. the us forest service is about 150. lightning strikes hit that area since last tuesday and that led to more than a dozen fires igniting you can track all of the fires burning in our state right now by going to abc7 news.com and use the abc7 news bay area wildfire tracker in washington this morning. >> a state of emergency because of wildfires burning near spokane. at least one person has been killed. hundreds of buildings have been destroyed because the fact of the matter is there's a beast at our door and that's the beast of climate change. >> it seems like the whole world is on fire today.

>> more than 20,000 acres of burned in spokane county alone. over the weekend. fema authorized emergency funding to help fight those fires. >> happening today, president biden will be visiting maui to meet with survivors and see the destruction there for himself. his visit comes as 850 people are still unaccounted for. and as we see, dramatic new video from the hours after the devastating fire started, abc news reporter andrew dymburt has the details. >> this morning, new videos of the wildfires on maui showing what firefighters faced as they arrived to the historic town of lahaina engulfed by the fire. at one point, flames surround a fire engine before firefighters are able to escape. in his first national interview since the fires, maui's fire chief getting emotional. >> the firefighters are hurting . this is their community. this is their home. these are their people. nobody in our department is unaffected by this. we care about our firefighters first and our community as well. and if

they can't go to work in a healthy way, then it's difficult for them to surf. >> officials say 85% of the destroyed area on maui has now been searched. president biden will see the devastation firsthand today, meeting with survivors here. they're stories and provide a sense of hope and assurance that the federal government is going to be with them. >> as he has directed. and we will continue to bring in resources to support the requests of the governor and the needs as they go through their recovery process. >> local residents have been critical of the federal response , including the $700 relief checks announced by fema. some saying that's not nearly enough to begin rebuilding their lives . there is hope and resilience amid the rubble, worshipers still gathered for sunday service at a coffee house 23 miles away from their now destroyed church. and the area's famed 150 year old banyan tree is still standing. and according to experts, still alive, undergoing life saving treatment. we checked underneath the bark of all of all the lower

trunks on the tree, and we found that there's still live tissue. >> we didn't see any major charring or scarring of the tree. >> fema says it's distributed nearly $4 million so far to about 1600. maui residents. andrew dymburt, abc news, new york. >> all right. we're starting off with a look of live doppler seven, the satellite radar image noticed that lightning strike. we could see some thunderstorms. right now it is off the coast. there's a chance of light showers and some thunder and lightning in the bay area. but it's a slight chance, of course , as post-tropical hillary moves through nevada. there are still flood watches in effect from southern california all the way up through oregon. and idaho. and the darker green are the areas where there's still a flood warning right now for us, what it's going to do is bring us humid conditions this afternoon. right now, dew points are in the 50s and low 60s. and so it's going to be muggy to humid today. once again.

temperatures right now are very mild. in fact, it is 75 degrees right now in brentwood. even in san francisco, in the coast, half moon bay, low 60s right now. temperatures really climbed up yesterday and compared to 24 hours ago, we are still a bit warmer. but this afternoon, things will change. it's going to be a bit cooler. live shot from our roof camera shows you the fog blowing there at the ferry building. and so today is going to be cloudier and cooler again, that slight chance of thunderstorm and scattered light showers, but very minimal, maybe a few hundreds of an inch for some spots. it's going to be drier and warmer midweek. here are the highs today. they're mild, but we'll see cloud cover temperatures range from 60s at the coast to mid 80s inland, and it's already busy on the roads. joe biden is keeping track of that. >> thank you, francis. it is. so we're going to start in sunnyvale right now where we're following a three car crash and a pretty large backup because of it. this is going to be on westbound 84 before little valley road. your speeds are

company, meta, is expected to launch a web version of the threads app this week. the wall street journal is reporting the new web version would appeal to users who want more functionality from the platform threads. is as it is now, is mostly geared toward cell phones and tablets, meta says the web app is already being tested by its employees, sources familiar with meta's plans say that launch plans are not final and could change an autonomous vehicle. >> company cruise says it'll reduce the number of cars operating in san francisco by 50. the move is in response to a request by the california dmv. they're investigating recent incidents involving robo taxis, including this incident in san francisco thursday night when a fire truck responding to a call crashed into a cruise car. a passenger in that car was hurt. cruz released a statement saying that it positively impacts road safety and looks forward to working with the dmv to make improvements. >> monterey was the place to be.

looking good ahead of the season. they beat the denver broncos 21 to 20in a preseason match on saturday. but the game is not what is making headlines this morning out of levi's stadium. i don't like to watch fight videos, but here it is so you can really see what happened . our cameras captured the moment this brawl broke out in the stands. now, it's not clear how it started, but it was eventually broken up by security. several of the people involved could be seen being escorted out of that area. we reached out to the 40 niners and to santa clara police for more information. this is actually the second fight that's been caught on camera at levi's stadium this year. this video is from back in july when a fight broke out in the stands during a soccer match. and one man ended up getting stabbed. the victim in that case is expected to be okay. and the suspect was arrested. >> a failure in space coming up at 530. the incident that crash landed a russian spacecraft on the moon. >> and the future is looking

gate bridge. so those are all the bridge issues this morning in terms of the roadways, we do have a couple of crashes. we have one lane now that has reopened on westbound 80 to highway 12. the off ramp specifically there in fairfield due to a crash. that's right on the line between fairfield and cordelia. you see the slowdown there and also a slowdown in saddle. this is going to be westbound 84 before little valley road. your speeds are under 20mph. still come. >> thank you. jobina developing news out of southern california. a local state of emergency has been issued in palm springs after tropical storm hillary moved in, bringing unprecedented rainfall and flooding. as you can see here, dozens of cars got trapped in floodwaters yesterday . the 911 lines are down in palm springs and in two other desert cities. most schools are closed today because of the impacts of hillary just a few miles outside of palm springs. floodwaters completely took over the roads and cathedral city. this is new video into the abc seven newsroom. as you can see, those roads are flooded. cars have just been abandoned there. and in this video, you can see just how fast and strong the flash
