7:07 am
hour after hour of rainfall here in san diego. this big decades old tree falling across this yard behind me, hitting that house. thankfully, no injuries as a result. but you can see the tree still on top of that house. this is the kind of thing that happens when you see the 2 to 3in of rain that we've received across the san diego area. saturated ground has led to dozens of incidents of trees reported down. all across this area. we also saw a report of a more than a dozen people rescued from a riverbank as that river was rising overnight. this has been a very serious 24 hours here across the san diego area. but i think when you speak to people here, generally, the sense is that things could have been worse, all things considered. no major damage, no deaths at this point. good news overall. lindsay sure seems that way. >> matt, thank you. now to the deadly wildfires burning in drought stricken washington state. the fires forcing thousands from their homes and shutting down a major interstate . alex bracket reports from

wrongfully detained on false charges in iran may finally be on their way home. a deal for their release appears to be coming together. this morning we're joined by two family members. tara tahbaz and neda sharghi. thank you both for coming in today. tara, let me begin with you. this has been an ordeal for almost six years for your family. do you finally believe it's coming to an end? >> you know, we don't know the details. we are just being cautiously optimistic and praying this is the end of this ordeal and there's light at the end of the tunnel. >> neda, how much have you been told? what do you know? >> we haven't actually been told much. i know there's speculation out in the papers and other people seem to know. but i don't think they know either. i think this has been really kept quite quiet and we don't know the details. the speculation i think is from folks who just want to be in the spotlight. but what we do know is that our
8:14 am
loved ones are finally on house arrest. these are innocent americans who are desperately waiting to come home to their families. >> tara, when was the last time you had a chance to speak to your brother? i know he had some serious health problems. >> i was able to talk to him yesterday. he called to ask me how i'm doing. with everything he's gone through, i'm just in awe that the first question is about, how are we? how are we hanging in, his children? it was nice to hear his voice. >> have you had the chance to talk to your brother? >> i actually saw him on video yesterday when he called which is always, your heart kind of flutters when you see his face. he falls into big brother role right away, asks how i'm doing, how my kids are doing, how our parents are doing. >> there's not much they can say. they assume everything is being monitored the whole time. >> we don't ask anything.
8:15 am
they don't offer anything. really, it's just small talk that we do. and that's fine. that's just fine for us right now. that's all we want to know is that they're healthy. we see their face, see that spark in their eye. we know that we have faith that our government is doing everything it can to bring them home. >> that is good to hear, the government is doing everything it can. tell us about your dad. i know he's an environmentalist who had gone to help the country of iran. how did this ordeal begin for him? >> so he was -- yes, he was there protecting the cheetahs during an environmental crackdown he was taken. what's more important is not why he was there, it's that he was taken solely because he's an american. wrongful detainee because he has a blue passport, he was taken. all the more reason that we have to do everything to bring him and the other americans home. >> how about your brother's
8:16 am
story? >> my brother and i were both born in iran but left at a very very young age. when his two daughters went off to college, he and his wife decided to go and visit the country of their heritage. unfortunately, hostage diplomacy works, the home he was staying in, they came in and they took him. >> there's been some criticism of this supposed deal that's coming together, about the fact that some $6 billion in iranian funds would be unfrozen. some people say that's paying ransom for hostages. how would you respond to that argument? >> i would say, you know, i think there are a lot of details about this deal we don't know. there is a lot of speculation. what i do know is that they were americans taken solely because they are american. what i do know is it's never wrong to bring home an american. every single one of these wrongful detainees is ours to bring home. it should always be a win to bring home an american citizen. i think that hostage diplomacy is a larger issue that's not
8:17 am
limited just to iran. so i definitely think we do need to put deterrents in place to block this in the future, but first and foremost it is important to bring home these americans and figuring out hostage diplomacy shouldn't be at their expense. >> what do you want everyone to know about your experience? >> my experience as a sister? >> yes. >> it's horrible. but, you know, i feel blessed to be an american. i feel fortunate that my government is now working hard to bring them home. i just look forward to the day that i can go to my brother's home in washington, d.c., ring the doorbell and have him open the door and welcome me in. >> let's all hope it's soon. thank you for coming in today. >> thank you. >> now let's go to leslie from kabc in los angeles. >> hey, good morning. all right. we cannot forget about the tropics. there's been so much weather across the nation. but the tropics now dealing with five tropical storm systems forming. the first one franklin that is
8:18 am
taking aim over the dominican republic. it could brush haiti or puerto rico, bringing as much as 6 inches of rain. brim of the storm system likely to be impacting puerto rico and the dominican republic will take the aim of that. then let's head over to the gulf of mexico where they will be dealing with potential of tropical storm harold. harold hasn't formed but could form over the next 48 hours. we're talking about 2 to 3 inches of rain for corpus christi. the good news is we could break up some of the heat they've been experiencing.

all right. we turn now to a new study on how ozempic and wegovy could help improve cardiovascular health, potentially helping millions of americans drop from obese to lower weight categories. our chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton is here to break it all down for us. great to see you, dr. jen. we hear a lot about these drugs. what's new? >> if you're in the lay public, you're hearing a lot of headlines about this. if you're in the medical community, this headline is not a surprise. we've known for sometime that there can be a secondary benefit to fda approved weight loss medications such as lowering risk for cardiovascular events, potentially saving lives. this study again confirms that. it used modelling estimates of over 20,000 people all of them black and hispanic or latino. all of them prediabetic. estimated that over 1 million cardiovascular events could
8:20 am
drop, could be reduced with just the use of these medications, semaglutide, to affect weight loss. if you connect the dots medically, scientifically, not really a surprise here. >> but a significant decrease if you're just hearing about this for the first time. you're board certified in obesity medicine. why do you think there's a degree of controversy in all of this? >> i think socially two words. fat stigma or fat bias. we know that occurs in the public. we also know, unfortunately, it occurs in the medical community itself. there's this myth and miss conception that obesity and the condition of overweight is just due to poor will power or lack of commitment or dedication. that could not be further from the truth. we have good evidence and we've known for sometime that it is a complex and chronic disorder due to a multitude of factors. and no one would come to anyone with high blood pressure and say, wow, you're taking a medication for that?
8:21 am
but that's what people are doing for people who are using these medications to lose weigh. that push back, not base dz on science. >> and if you're thinking about taking one of these drugs, how do you start that conversation your doctor? >> ideally you find a physician or health care provider board certified in obesity medicine. they're out there. there are not enough of them. you should get multiple opinions. there are other specialties in medicine that have more experience with these medications like cardiology, internal medicine, ob/gyn and of course obesity medicine. if you hear no the first time, be persistent. it can be life changing and life saving. >> advocate for yourself. >> it's not the only option, but it's one of them. >> always appreciate your input, dr. jen. thank you so much. linsey? >> thank you, ladies. now to a new documentary about prince andrew and now infamous bbc interview that led to him being banished from royal duties. eva pilgrim is back with closer look at secrets of prince andrew.
