hilary larry. all right. >> thanks for talking us through all that. the it department is on the way as hilary moves out of southern california. the storm is really leaving a big mess behind. it's been a tricky commute today for drivers along interstate ten inches palm desert, as you can see right there, cars and trucks trying to make it through some really thick mud. and that is only part of the aftermath. abc's tim pulliam with more from los angeles. >> despite heavy rain, flooding and powerful winds, southern california avoiding the brunt of hillary's harm, the fact that it wasn't the catastrophe that had been anticipated, we are very happy about with the storm now downgraded and headed north, los angeles leaders still warning residents to be careful during the height of the storm. officials estimate more than 41,000 people were without power. crews responding to more than 1800 emergencies in nearly 100 traffic accidents in l.a county. this video shows a road collapsing as vehicles drive by . the hillary washed away roads and cause dangerous mudflows in

cathedral city. aerials show mudflows swallowing these vehicles. neighbors in northern l.a. county forced to evacuate. >> i told my girlfriend to get the kids, get my daughter and get out. i mean, there was nothing we could do. i've never seen this ever before. >> the first tropical storm to strike california in more than 25 years making landfall sunday evening near baja, california, mexico. hillary dumping record rainfall across the region. palm springs area, just over three inches of rain, but that made it the wettest august day on record. >> and the rains not over. you can still see that moisture streaming in up through parts of nevada, into utah, still in arizona as well, and making their way into the pacific northwest in the middle of hillary's wrath. >> a surprise 5.1 magnitude earthquake about 80 miles northwest of downtown los angeles. >> chief, i'm really sorry to interrupt you right now. our our studio is shaking right now. so not only are we dealing with a tropical storm, but it appears we are now dealing with an earthquake. >> experts say the storm had nothing to do with the quake

here in southern california. there was no significant damage or injuries from the earthquake or the storm. in los angeles, the second largest school district in the nation will reopen on tuesday. tim pulliam, abc news, los angeles. >> and more video shows what drivers were up against in cathedral city. this is in riverside county. the suv no match for thick mud. dozens of cars were abandoned in the area as the waters rose up to the wheel. wells of those vehicles. >> the bay area is feeling the ripple effects of the tropical storm hilary swift. water rescue teams from the north and east bay are in southern california assisting first responders in the aftermath. meantime, we're also hearing from a local newlywed couple whose wedding near san diego didn't exactly go as planned during the storm. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has details. larry swift water rescue teams from marin and sonoma counties are testing equipment which could be needed across southern california in the wake of hilary, you have

cross by texting red cross to 90999 or call one 800 red cross and any donation is truly, truly appreciated. >> grief and sorrow are gripping the latino community in san francisco after a young man was gunned down in a community center. family members of damian gonzalez held hands and prayed outside the mission recreation center on harrison lane. it was there last friday when gonzalez was playing basketball with friends. witnesses say a man wearing a black ski mask went inside and shot gonzalez, the 18 year old victim volunteered with the latino task force and had a t shirt business. his mom fought back tears as she recalled how excited damian was to be a father. >> he was a great kid. he was about to be a dad. he was so excited. next week. it was was going to be his baby shower. >> no arrests have been made so far. the mission recreation center is closed until further notice. >> we have an update now on the

death of a 63 year old woman found badly injured in the bayview district last month. police originally believed the woman had been attacked. she died two days later. but then after they looked at the video of the incident, investigators determined her death was caused by an accident. a lab test confirmed high levels of legionella bacteria in water and swab samples from a richmond spa. contra costa health now says at least four cases of legionnaires disease have been linked to the zen day spa. two people have recovered, but two others died from the disease. after visiting that facility. test results of the legionella bacteria included samples from an unpermitted jacuzzi at that business. health officials say the spa did not have the required disinfecting materials to operate a public hot tub. >> this particular business did not notify us that they were going to be operating a hot tub or a spa. and so we therefore did not go through the plan reviewing process, which is the beginning stages of issuing them

2023 id4 pro for just 349 a month. >> brand new season of the tamron hall show starts september fifth. abc7 crew n and its autonomous cars spent the weekend pulling back some of their vehicles on san francisco streets following an order from the department of motor vehicles . >> this after two accidents in several incidents this past week. today crews said it will work with the dmv to make improvements to its fleet. abc7 news reporter leanne melendez joins us live in the newsroom with the latest. leanne >> well, kristin, i don't know if you noticed, but we saw a decline in the number of cruise vehicles almost immediately after the dmv put out that order on friday. meanwhile a few other cities that are starting to test these vehicles are watching what happens here in san francisco very closely. today crews kept half of its 400 autonomous vehicles on the sidelines. right now, according to the company, 150 cars are schedul to drive

at night and only 50 vehicles will be on san francisco's streets during the day. this after the department of motor vehicles said it was investigating concerning incidents. the first one on august 11th, when several of them paused for 15 minutes at an intersection in the north beach neighborhood. then several days later, an accident involving a fire department truck. police have yet to determine who was at fault. a second accident occurred in the mission district, where a driver ran a red light and crashed into the cruise vehicle, which had stopped in the middle of the intersecon in a statent crews said they look forward to working with the california dmv to make any impnts and provide any data they need to reinforce the safety and efficiency of our fleet. this week in the autonomous vehicles encountered some minor issues in glen park city. crews had closed the street to fix a water main break. watch how the worker

stands in the way of the crews vehicle as it tries to enter the street. frustrated the worker began kicking the tires. >> as we hear about it in the news. >> that's michael connell, reporter for the atlanta journal constitution, who has written about cruise's announcement that it would start testing cars with a driver in atlanta. earlier this month, they gave us the impression that they were going to do the rollout pretty steadily and slowly and not all at once. >> so i wouldn't expect to see a big wave of them. >> cruise is doing the same in austin and cruise has from the beginning talked about the number of people who die as a result of car accidents. again, today, they told us that they believe it's clear that cruise positively impacts overall road safety. in the newsroom, leanne melendez, abc seven news, all right, so, leanne, they've been ordered to reduce the fleet a little bit. >> do you know how long that will last? >> well, you know, let me tell you something. i pretty sure

that they want to get back on the road as soon as possible. with that said, the dmv says that 50% reduction will remain until its investigation can concludes. now, again, cruise takes action to improve safety. they say that they will, but there is no official timetable at this point. >> all right, leanne, thank you. >> the archdiocese of san francisco filed for bankruptcy today as it deals with hundreds of sex abuse lawsuits. chapter 11 bankruptcy allows the roman catholic archdiocese to keep operating while it addresses the lawsuits collectively instead of individually. in a statement, the archdiocese said it has paid out more than $70 million to sex abuse survivor says the bankruptcy filing does not affect parochial schools or the 88 parishes operating under the archdiocese. the archdiocese of oakland filed for bankruptcy in may, and we have new details today dealing with a dispute over a vacant school board seat in oakland to candidates who

swirled around the bay area was produced by tropical storm hilary when it was moving through northern california yesterday. so there are numerous thunderstorms over in the sierra and in the central valley. 1 or 2 of those storms could possibly work their way into the bay area. but right now, we just have some light scattered showers and we've got breezy conditions especially near the coast where wind speeds are ranging from 20 to about 30, 32mph. so when we go to the 24 hour temperature change, which is quite significant, 23 degrees cooler right now at fairfield than at this time yesterday, 22 degrees cooler at san jose and many other locations are ten to 15 or 16 degrees cooler than at this time yesterday. here's the view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco. this is a rather beautiful sky with just enough clouds to give it a little texture, some sunshine breaking through. we've got low to mid 70s right now at san francisco, oakland, mountain view, san jose and palo alto, 66 at half moon bay. another beautiful view of the sky from emeryville. a lot more blue in this view. 75 degrees right now

at santa rosa and livermore and mid 70s as well at novato, napa, fairfield and concord. and from our rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero and a bit to the southeast there these are our forecast headlines. scattered showers tonight and maybe an isolated thunderstorm or two sunnier and drier and warmer tomorrow and the weekend expect warm weather near the bay and hot weather inland beginning on wednesday, continuing through at least thursday. so for the overnight forecast, animation, rain, lots of clouds, little pockets of moisture here and there, that will diminish as we get later into the overnight hours. and by 11:00 tomorrow, the chance of any precipitation here will be greatly diminished if we do get any in the next 12 hours or so, we're talking about just a couple of hundredths of an inch, maybe near hayward and oakland. oh, we go overnight lows still under sort of muggy conditions, mainly mid 60s highs tomorrow, upper 60s at the coast, upper 70s near the bay, upper 80s inland and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. now i'm posting 100 here as the

night stream, abc news live on hulu. >> a south bay drugmaker is about to begin human testing on a first of its kind fentanyl antibody treatment. now, unlike narcan, the antibody manufactured by cessation therapeutics would be administered before fentanyl is taken to prevent death or overdose. as abc7 news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains how experts hope this can be a solution to the rising issue in the bay area. in fact, all across the country a sobering dose of reality. >> fentanyl remains the leading cause of death for people ages 18 to 45 and the cause of 90% of overdose fatalities. experts say more options are needed to prevent loss of life, despite the availability of things like narcan. >> we continue to see all time high overdoses throughout the country. and we think our big news is we have something that we think will help address this public health crisis borne out of san jose based investment firm altamont pharmaceutical holdings. >> cessation therapeutics has developed a new monarch clonal

antibody therapy. the fda has authorized a human clinical trial of the 100 for injection that provides no high and prevents any type of overdose, whether it's injected intravenously or snorted through the nose or even taken orally. >> once it gets to the bloodstream. this antibody is going to grab it with high affinity and prevent it from from inducing its harmful effects in the brain. >> unlike narcan that's given by someone else after an overdose, the antibody would be given by a doctor before someone uses fentanyl and has shown 30 days of overdose prevention and non human testing. the hope is that this would be another tool in the fight against fentanyl deaths. >> we're trying to get to people, high risk individuals before they experience an overdose and provide a protective mechanism in the form of this antibody. so fentanyl is rendered ineffective. >> the santa clara county fentanyl working group's doctor , rachel sussman, says there are other pre overdose treatments for opioids like vivitrol. and more study needs to be done

for those three varieties working in the family business in the winery over the last 50 years. you kind of just pinch yourself because i got the best job this year. 2023 is our 50th anniversary. and so when my brother and i kind of talk, we kind of like it doesn't seem like 50 years. it seems like maybe five. okay, maybe ten years. but it doesn't seem that long a period of time. and one is we've just been having a lot of fun. background over 50 years of making wine here in the middle of rutherford is it kind of goes way back to my grandfather. my grandfather started an auto repair in 1926. my grandfather and my father worked together running the garage along with my grandmother and mother. it was truly a family affair.

we're making about ten barrels of cabernet and sauvignon blanc. and so pretty much everything was done by hand and each year we grew a little bit. >> this is our visitor center where our guests come when they first come on the property. we remodeled this and the remodeling was finished in 2019. all of the wood that you see here, including the lights, is recycled or reclaimed. and the barrels that make these lights came from our barrels. we have of 60 or so acres in total here. large portion of that is covered in vineyard. in addition to that, we have nine or so tasting rooms and other tasting areas as . since the beginning of sustainable quality and protecting the ecosystems and

environment around the vineyards has been key to who we are. we farm organically in all of our vineyards. we are working with local sustainability groups like napa green. we've recently become members of the international wineries for climate action group, so we're taking our ideas now internationally and starting to work with other wineries around the world. >> now you can't outrun climate change and so it's how do you adapt? that's going to be the most important thing. you see people trying a lot of different things and hopefully we all can learn together and learn from other people's mistakes. our mistakes, and then say, ah, that's a good idea. how can we improve on it? but it has to happen now. we can't wait. exciting to be able to get to this phase and be able to work to get it to the next generation in a really strong manner. that is adapting to the conditions, whether it's climate conditions,
