because a car is going to be turning right? unfortunately we kind of just live in a constant state of fear of getting hit or getting killed on our streets. >> and that's just our normal. like, what are we doing as a city street safety in san francisco. >> the crash that killed a four year old girl in a crosswalk last week now setting off community uproar to upgrade and improve a dangerous intersection. still some say it's not enough. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ana daetz. it's an issue that's now bringing neighbors out for a rally over traffic safety. tomorrow they say this intersection has long had a dangerous past. >> the crash happened back on tuesday at fourth and king right by the caltrain stops and oracle park, abc7 news reporter tim johns was there on the scene at the time. he's here in the studio now with more on these new changes from the city. tim. >> yeah. dan ama. now this is just a heartbreaking story all around. that four year old girl was visiting from out of the country with her family when she was struck and killed in that intersection. now, with these

new changes being proposed by the city, many pedestrian safety advocates are wondering, is it enough if amid the hustle and bustle of rush hour at the intersection of fourth and king in san francisco, subtle reminders of a tragedy. he last week, a four year old girl being pushed in a stroller was hit and killed by a car while crossing the street with her parents. >> no child should die in the crosswalk. >> jodie medeiros is the executive director of walk san francisco. she spent the afternoon putting up fliers around the intersection ahead of a planned vigil for the little girl on tuesday. >> we are hoping for hundreds of people here frustrated and rallying for the city to make some changes, changes that the city sayar coming in statement, mayor london breed's office saying sfmta will improve the safety of the intersection with two main improvement points. >> first, by removing one of the southbound right turn lanes from fourth onto king street and second by changing the traffic signal for drivers, making a right turn, going from a green light to a yellow arrow. things that look bornheimer says simply

aren't enough. do we need thousands of people to be killed across our entire city to fix all of our streets? bornheimer is a sustainable transportation advocate who says the city has failed to improve street safety for years. in 2022, 39 people were killed in traffic related incidents across san francisco, the highest number since 2007. there's a focus on the individual intersection or street where that thing happened . >> instead of thinking more citywide and how we get more people to shift trips away from cars. >> bornheimer isn't alone either. we talked to several pedestrians walking nearby, nearly all of whom say they've worried about their safety. so even when the light is green for me, it doesn't mean that i'm going to always have the right of way. >> it depends on how rushed the driver is on fourth street beyond the changes to the fourth and king intersection, city officials say they're committed to creating a plan to make all problems attic streets safer for pedestrians by the end of 2024. >> a promise that advocates say they want the details for.

>> they've said they're going to do it. so now we want to see the plan. that's that's what we're asking for. >> now, the vigil for that little girl is scheduled to take place tomorrow at 5 p.m. in the studio, tom johns, abc seven news. >> new developments tonight in that massive fire at a scrap metal plant in oakland earlier this month. the alameda county district attorney's office says it is now investigating and no official cause of the fire was given at the schnitzer steel facility near the port of oakland. it broke out august 9th and burned for nearly 24 hours. it sent hazardous smoke across many parts of the east bay and prompted an air quality advisory. alameda county prosecutor are now asking the public to come forward with information that they might have about the fire. >> tonight, southern california and parts of nevada are assessing the damage left behind by tropical storm hillary. >> the fact that it wasn't the catastrophe that had been anticipated, we are very happy about that today from the mayor

of los angeles, other regions outside of metro l.a. >> have not been so lucky. the palm springs area is covered in mud, washed out washouts and flooded roads in san bernardino county. the record breaking rainfall brought flash flooding and dangerous rock slides as we set up sandbags over the weekend thinking that that would be sufficient. >> but it blew right through them. there's boulders in the backyard that i don't know how they got on that side of the garage, but there's boulders the size of a volkswagen in that are just sitting over there. so strange. >> sure is strange. hillary is the first tropical storm to ever cross into nevada. >> well, we saw some light showers from the storm here in the bay area. we were getting your videos from five 8-80 in oakland and out in san jose. let's check in with abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel for what we should be expecting for tomorrow. umbrellas. sandhya no, actually i think other than an isolated shower for most of you will be able to put those umbrellas away. let's take a

in the region that we're talking about now, the south china sea. >> it's not at all abnormal to find a typhoon in any month of the year here in california, our rainy season, you could almost like, to your point, set a watch . >> by mid-march, it's going to stop raining. and by november it would start now. it's kind of all over the map. it's not predictable anymore like it was even here in in turkey. >> i mean, it's incredibly hot at the moment and that's expected. but each year it is actually breaking a new record. and i think yesterday was running about 45°c, which is about 150°f. i mean, that that's hot. >> dick beaumont is the owner of kraken yachts based in turkey and has had the opportunity to see the effects of climate change from a unique perspective for decades. as a bluewater sailor right now, president biden is making his return flight back to the lake tahoe

area. >> this was video of him boarding air force one earlier this evening. he scheduled to land around 1:15 a.m. our time today. the president toured the devastating damage of the maui wildfires. for the first time, the president walked around the city of lahaina after viewing the burned out areas by helicopter. so far, 114 people have been confirmed dead. more than 800 are still missing. the president not only promised federal aid to rebuild, he also said it would focus on respecting the local culture. lahaina is considered sacred ground to native hawaiians. our country grieves with you, stands with you, and will do everything possible to help you recover, rebuild and respect culture and traditions. >> when the rebuilding takes place, fema says nearly 6000 survivors have already registered for federal assistance. >> the maui fire is the deadliest in the us in the last 100 years. in the meantime, tomorrow more help is headed to maui. >> members of the san francisco fire department will be traveling there to help the community very much in need.

bay area means improving and modernizing our network of public transportation. >> but right now public transit in the bay area is in dire straits. state leaders are back to the drawing board of sorts on ways to find critical funding for local transit agencies. today state senator scott wiener of san francisco put his idea on hold to increase bridge tolls by $1.50. the strategy strategy would have added an estimated $180 million for bay area public transit without any additional funding, sfmta expects service cuts to begin near the end of next year. bart expects cuts sometime in 2025. tonight you'll be seeing a far fewer of those crews. robo taxis on san francisco streets. general motors is agreeing to cut the number of its autonomous fleet of vehicles in half across the city. this after two accident and several incidents in the past week. abc7 news reporter leanne melendez explains the new order from the dmv to make improvements. >> today crews kept half of its 400 autonomous vehicles on the

nes. right nowacrding to the company, 150are scheduled to drive at night and only 50 vehicles will be on san francisco's streets during the day. this after the depart of motor vehicles said it was investigating concerning incidents. the first one on august 11th, when several of them paused for 15 minutes at an intersection in the north beach neighborhood. then several days later, an accident involving a fire department truck. police have yet to determine who was at fault. a second accident that occurred in the mission district where a driver ran a red light and crashed into the cruise vehicle, which had stopped in the middle of the intersection in a statement, crews said they look forward to rking with the california dmv t make any iments and provide any data they need to reinforce the safety and efficiency of our fleet. this week in the autonomous vehicles encountered some minor issues in glen park

city. crews had closed the street to fix a water main break. watch how the worker stands in the way of the crews vehicle as it tries to enter the street. frustrated the worker began kicking the tires. >> we hear about it in the news . >> that's michael connell, reporter for the atlanta journal constitution who has written about cruises, announced that it would start testing cars with a driver in atlanta earlier this month. they gave us the impression that they were going to do the rollout pretty steadily and slowly and add not all at once. >> so i wouldn't expect to see a big wave of them. >> cruise is doing the same in austin, and crews has from the beginning talked about the number of people who die as a result of car accidents. again today they told us that they believe it's clear that cruise positively impacts overall road safety in the newsroom, leanne melendez, abc seven news. coming up here, a california shop owner and designer shot and killed in

vaccine given to pregnant women to protect newborns against rsv. it is a common respiratory virus that hospitalizes thousands of infants and elderly adults every year. the vaccine provides protection to babies up to six months after they're born. now, doctors believe there could be a drop in infant hospitalizations by the tens of thousands with this new vaccine. so that is incredible. >> that really is. we've been reporting on the ongoing adderall shortage in the us. new at 11. could the solution be found in video games as a digital medicine company dropped its first ever over-the-counter video game to target adhd symptoms in adults. the fda approved of the digital game with obstacles to help sharpen the attention span. however, health experts warn the digital therapeutic technique here can be overused. they suggest people only use the game in small doses, not much time. also new at 11 tonight, a young boy's baseball glove packed with many

check my seat, secure? he took selena altman back to her section and to lost and found, but had no luck before i made it to the car. >> car? obviously he's seen. i didn't have it. i just heard the sobs, altman said. >> it was a crushing ride home to san jose. she posted to social media that night, desperate to put the word out that the sentimental glove is missing. >> one of the pictures that i shared is from 2020, when he was being homeschooled, doing his phonics on the tv and his gloves on his head because he never put it down. >> the a's club provided this statement. we have been unable to locate the glove inside the ballpark, but we are working with our stadium operations team and the facilities team in case it is turned in. we encourage our fans to help spread the word so robert can be reunited with his special glove objects have so many different meanings to different people. altman hopes someone hears her son's story and happens to find and return the glove that holds so many memories.

>> i learned a lot of stuff with it in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> let's hope he gets it back. >> we hope so. >> all right. it's time for a check on the weather. >> yeah. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the remnants of tropical storm hilary. sandy yeah, and dan and irma. >> those remnants are still bringing showers across much of the rocky mountain states. let's take a look at live. doppler seven made landfall just north of baja yesterday afternoon. >> 87 mile an hour wind gusts down south. some of the higher totals up to a foot of rain in. so definitely left its mark and it brought us some showers as well. >> now, we do have flood warnings and flood watches for parts of the western us. >> there were hundreds of reports of damage from debris flows to flash flooding to flooding. basically heavy rain out west. and as we take a look at the computer animation, you will notice that the rockies will continue to see some showers as leftovers of post-tropical cyclone loan. hilary, continue to move through

. it is getting active in the atlantic. harold is a newly formed tropical storm expected to bring rain to texas as early as tomorrow morning. we have franklin and gert, so a lot to watch out for. leftovers of hilary brought us some scattered showers. you will notice measurable three hundreds. hayward, sfo two hundredths of an inch in oakland, fairfield, six hundredths and san jose one hundredths of an inch. here's a look back at those showers that came through from the south and tonight the moisture is winding down. here's a look at those dew points. still a little bit on the muggy to humid side across the bay area. but we will notice drier air by wednesday. temperatures right now in the 60s and 70s, pretty mild out there. a live view from our emeryville camera. and here's a look at the air quality advisory that remains up through tomorrow due to smoke from california wildfires. so the air quality is going to be moderate tomorrow, but there may be times where you will notice some haze and smoke as you will notice from the smoke forecast going into tomorrow night. so just be aware
