because a car? is going to be turning? ? >> we have a constant state of fear on the streets. what are we doing as a city? dan: the crash that killed a four-year-old girl at a crosswalk last week now setting off community uproar to upgrade and improve a dangerous intersection. still, some say it is not enough. think you for joining us. ama: it is an issue that is bringing neighbors out for a rally on traffic safety tomorrow. they say the intersection has had a dangerous past. dan: the crash happened on tuesday at fourth and king. abc 7 news reporter tim johns was there at the scene. he is here now with more on these new changes from the city. tim: this is just a heartbreaking story all around. that four-year-old girl was visiting from out of the country with her family when she was struck and killed in that intersection.

now, new changes being proposed by the city. any advocates are wondering, is it enough? amid the hustle and bustle of rush hour at the intersection than san francisco, subtle reminders of a tragedy. last week, four-year-old girl was in a stroller was hit and killed by a car when crossing the street with her parents. jody is the executive director of walk san francisco. she spent the afternoon putting up flyers around the intersection. >> we are hoping for hundreds of people here, frustrated and rallying for the city to make changes. tim: changes the city says are coming. then a statement, mayor london breed's office saying that the sf ta will make improvements, first by removing the right bound turn lanes and by changing the traffic signal for drivers making a right turn, going from a green light to a yellow arrow. things that one person

simply not enough. >> do we need 1000 people to be killed across the city to get safer streets? tim: he says the city has failed to improve safety for years. in 2022, 89 people were killed from traffic related incidents in san francisco. >> there is a focus on the individual section or street of that being happening, instead of citywide and how we get people to shift away from cars. tim: we talked to several pedestrians walking nearby, nearly all of whom say they worry about their safety. >> even when the light is green for me, it does not mean i have the right of way. it appends on how rushed the driver is. tim: beyond changes to the fourth and king intersection, city officials say they are committed to create a plan to make problematic streets safer for all pedestrians. it is a promise that advocates say they want the details for. >> they said they want to do it,

so now we want to see the plan. tim: the vigil for that little girl is scheduled to take place tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. tim johns, abc 7 news. ama: new developments that massive fire at a scrap metal plant in oakland earlier this month. the alameda county district attorney's office says it is now investigating, and no official cause of a fire was given. the fire broke out august lasted for nearly 24 hours. it sent hazardous smoke across much of the east bay. alameda county prosecutors are now asking the public to come forth with any information they might have about the fire. dan: tonight southern california and parts of nevada are assessing the damage left behind by tropical storm hilary. >> the fact it was not the catastrophe that it had been anticipated, we are happy about. dan: that today from the mayor

this was video from the airport earlier this evening. he is scheduled to land at 1:15 a.m. our time. he surveyed the damage from the maui wildfires for the first time. he went to the city of lahaina after viewing the burnt down areas by helicopter. the president not only promising federal aid to rebuild, but he also said he was focused on respecting the local culture. lahaina is considered sacred ground till hawaiians. >> our country grieves with you, stands with you, and will do everything possible to help you recover, build, and respect culture and traditions. ama: fema says nearly survivors have already registered for federal assistance. the maui fire has been the deadliest in the u.s. in more than 100 years. dan: more help is headed to maui. members of the san francisco fire department will be traveling there to help the

better bay area means improving and modernizing our public transportation. state leaders are back to the drawing board on ways to find critical funding for local transit agencies. today, state senator scott weiner of san francisco put his idea on hold to increase bridge tolls by $1.50. the strategy would have added an estimated $180 billion for bay area transit. service costs would be near the end of next year and bart expects cuts around 2025. tonight he will be seeing far -- fewer of the cruise upon amiss cars on the streets. this after two incidents in several accidents the seth -- the past weeks. we explain the new order from the dmv. reporter: today cruise cap half of its 400 autonomous vehicles
