like former president trump, giuliani is charged with racketeering for his role in the alleged criminal scheme to overturn the election results in georgia. >> i'm going to georgia and i'm feeling very very good about it because i feel like i'm defending the rights of all americans. >> reporter: trump is also preparing to get fingerprinted and have his mug shot taken before he's released on $200,000 bond. unlike the courthouses in new york, miami and washington, where trump surrendered before, he's coming thursday to one of the country's most controversial jails with a history of overcrowding, complaints oven excessive force and the recent death of an inmate. trump's alleged co-conspirator, john eastman preceding him at the jail. the lawyer is accused of drafting a memo proposing the use of fake electors to try to block joe biden's rightful victory. >> my legal team and i will vigorously contest every count of the indictment in which i have been named. >> reporter: eastman's bond was set at $100,000. so was the bond for jenna ellis a former trump campaign attorney who allegedly peddled falsehoods

about the election to georgia lawmakers. mark meadows wants the case moved to federal court and he's asking the judge to rule before the surrender deadline of noon friday. meadows tried asking prosecutors for a reprieve but court records show the district attorney, fani willis, replying, i am not granting any extensions. overnight two more of trump's co-defendants turned themselves in. david schaffer former republican chairman for the state of jar skwra and kathy latham, a former county official. she allegedly gave unauthorized access to voting machines in an ill fated attempt to prove fraud. george? >> former president now facing four different felony cases. there was a major development yesterday in the classified documents case. >> reporter: this is the first known witness to cooperate against former president trump. and cooperate with special counsel jack smith. an i.t. worker at mar-a-lago.

prosecutors were prepared to charge him with lying to investigators before he had his change of heart. now we're told he provided valuable information to jack smith and his team about former president trump's alleged push to have i.t. footage, security camera footage at mar-a-lago, deleted despite knowing the fbi wanted to see it. george? >> more evidence coming out. aaron, thank you very much. robin? now to the first republican primary debate. the stakes are high as eight gop contenders prepare to square off tonight all of them hoping to break out of the pack. rachel scott is in milwaukee with a preview. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: robin, good morning. this will be an unconventional kickoff for the republican primary. eight candidates taking the debate stage without the front runner, former president trump. in just a few hours, eight republican candidates will share the debate stage for the first time. the lineup is set, florida governor ron desantis will be center stage.

>> we are not going to stop. we are going to show energy, vigor. >> reporter: with trump out, desantis is bracing for an unslaught of attacks and has been preparing for months. but a leaked memo may complicate his strategy. it previewed possible attacks, calling on desantis to take a sledge hammer to the candidates standing beside him. >> i'm fully prepared for taking a few iterations to find my stride. >> reporter: he is a fierce defender of trump who said his campaign platform is inspired by the former president. he's not the only one stepping onto the national stage for the first time. north dakota's governor and former arkansas governor will be introducing themselves to voters. even seasoned politicians by former vice president mike pence, former u.n. ambassador nikki haley and senator tim scott are betting on a break through. but other candidates are ready to pounce. former new jersey governor chris

his own son will be in milwaukee looking to push out his message before he surrenders to authorities in georgia tomorrow. >> thanks to you. linsey? now to the remnants of tropical storm harold moving through southern texas this morning. mireya villarreal is in corpus christi where the storm made landfall. good morning, mireya. >> reporter: good morning. you can still feel the lingering effects of what was tropical storm harold. every now and then we get a good gust of wind, to remind us there was a storm that passed through here. it has moved on and is now a tropical depression. at its height, harold was pushing 60 mile per hour winds and dumped more than half foot of rain in some of the affected areas. it has been hot and dry here in south texas. the rain quickly accumulated in those low lying areas. overnight most of the flooding rece receded. there were plenty of crews standing at the ready, ready to help here. this morning people living in

west texas are under a flood watch with tropical depression harold pushing its way out of the state. overall right now, harold, was a welcomed guest in this area where it is very hot. we have some very parched parts of south texas. guys? >> okay, mireya, thanks. 104 million americans are facing heat alerts now, 22 states. more triple digit temperatures on the way over the next few days. alex perez is there. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. chicago public schools like this one will be rescheduling outdoor activities and bracing for temperatures that will feel like triple digits. these red hot temperatures are pretty rare. if chicago reaches 100 today or tomorrow, it will be the first time in 30 years we've seen temperatures that high in august. one school district in suburban chicago with little air conditioning has switched to remote learning this week. now they're pushing back the start of the school year from today to friday. in kansas city, students will be dismissed early all week.

now, cooling centers are open across the area. now thankfully for some parts of the mid west, this will be short lived. more season sal temperatures expected by friday. robin? >> they'll appreciate that. now to the latest on the search for victims in the maui wild fire. the governor is warning people to brace for, quote, a lot more loss of life. the death toll now stands at 115 with the number of people unaccounted for reaching as many as 1,100. mola lenghi is live for us in maui. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, robin. as you can imagine, the search for the missing has been a painstaking process. but as difficult as it has already been, officials are bracing this community for it to get even worse. this morning the search for the missing on maui turning grim. >> every single structure or area has been damaged by the fire is being and will be searched for human remains so that we can recover our loved ones.

>> reporter: the fbi now working with local authorities, pleading with the public to get their fingerprints and dna to help them identify their loved ones. the rapid dna test being used reportedly processes dna samples in less than two hours. >> ultimately, some of these remains may never be identified. >> i think that's safe to say. >> reporter: according to officials, the number of fatalities stands at 115, while approximately 1,100 remain unaccounted for. the governor now telling kitv to prepare for a significant rise in the death toll as search teams have now moved to the next phase. multilevel homes. >> we do expect to see a lot more loss of life. it's going to be tragic. i want to brace everyone for that. >> reporter: amid the uncertainty, ellie ericson volunteered to help those missing. working with volunteers from around the world, she created the maui fires people locater a spread sheet with thousands of names and status updates for maui residents, along with links to resources, and information on how to help.

>> this isn't just a number on a spread sheet to us. these are our friends and family who are living through some of the most horrific tragedies that have been documented. >> reporter: officials say up to this point 104 dna samples have been submitted by families. significantly fewer than what will ultimately be needed to i.d. all the victim remains. >> so many people at this point just want closure, understandably. mola, thank you. now to a deadly police shooting in philadelphia. new video showing an officer opening fire and killing a 27-year-old man has been released by the victim's family. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas joins us with that story. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: linsey, good morning. the new chilling video we are about to show raises disturbing questions for police and provides more evidence that officers at the scene may have lied about the circumstances of how they fatally shot a man. >> this is textbook a situation where this would be a less lethal option. >> reporter: this is the moment

police fatally shot eddie irizari, caught on tape. >> show your hands! >> reporter: ring camera video released by the family showing the car parking. police then pulling up with no sirens. officer mark dial is seen exiting the patrol car within seconds shooting multiple times. his car door closed, window up. these images the polar opposite of what police initially said happen, alleging irizari got out of the car and lunged at police officers. >> what about what you just saw could be confused as he got out of the car and lunged at police officers? >> reporter: this morning the family demanding justice. >> the officers took someone very special to us. i just want him to pay for what he did. >> reporter: officer dial is currently on administrative leave as an investigation is under way. >> the body worn camera footage made it clear that what we

initially reported was not actually what happened. >> reporter: the young man's family is considering a wrongful death lawsuit and the city da said an investigation is under way. such a sad story. george? >> it certainly is. pierre, thank you very much. now to the cable caress que hundreds of feet above pack scan. it took crews 13 hours to save the adults and children trapped in the car. marcus moore has details. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: good morning, george. we have new video of the moment the children were rescued. this is the outcome everyone was hoping and praying for. but it came with a lot of risk, some failed attempts and frightening moments for those children. relief this morning after a heart pounding midair rescue. six children and two adults finally safe after one of the cables holding up their cable car snapped, trapping them 600 feet in the air for 16 hours. military choppers on the scene rescuing this child, seen here swinging out from a dangling car, hoisted up by a safety line. when it got too dangerous and dark for the chopper to be here,

this person setting up a make shift rescue line. the operation going late into the night. then finally this incredible moment. final two passengers making it back to land. relief and joy on the faces of all those around. [ cheers ] the children ranging in age from 10 to 15 years old were on their way to school in northwestern pakistan when the cable snapped. now this morning they're telling their story. he says, we were going to school when the car reached the middle, a cable snapped and the car tilted. we were shaking but later it was fine. another child saying, we were very scared and i thought it was our last day. the cable car, a life line for residents in the mountainous areas. overnight the prime minister saying they will conduct inspections to ensure they are safe to operate and use. 16 full hours stuck in that cable car dangling from the cable.

[ laughter ] that's all coming up. we're gonna turn to the fallout from retail thefts across the country. dick's sporting goods is reporting a plunging of profits blaming it on what they are calling organized retail crime.

rebecca jarvis has details. good morning. >> more than a dozen stores including target, ulta and dick's sporting goods have called out organized theft as seriously impacting their business. it's so hard quantify it is with retailers having to self-report the problem. this morning, dick's sporting goods blaming an increasingly serious theft problem at its stores for a 23% drop in its profit. the retailer joining a growing list of companies including target, home depot, tj maxx and ulta recently sounding the alarm on organized retail crime. >> it's difficult to quantify. not a lot of information is shared. >> reporter: from this flash mob stealing nearly $100,000 worth of items at a california mall earlier this month, to big box retailers like home depot being hit especially hard and losing billions of dollars. according to the national retail federation, it's also becoming more costly, accounting for

$94.5 billion in losses in 2021 alone. with retailers reporting a 26.5% increase in organized retail crime. the vast majority said the violence and aggression associated with it increased in the past year. >> lot of the stolen merchandise just ends up being resold on third party market place, online. >> reporter: retailers say this type of crime is reaching unprecedented level, forcing the average family to pay an estimated $500 more each year on goods. and the other impact here is clearly the safety and well being of the in store employees who are witnesses to these sometimes violent crimes. retailers say the most common items stolen are removable, valuable, enjoyable items things like clothes, beauty products, electronics, eye wear, office supplies and toys. guys? >> we end up paying for that as consumers. thank you.

now to the investigation into an explosion of a north carolina home killing the father of nfl star caleb farley. trevor ault joins us now. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. the images of what's left of this house are stunning. one neighbor said it looked like someone dropped a bomb there. authorities say all the evidence so far shows this was simply a terrible accident. this morning authorities continue to investigate the cause of a horrific explosion at a north carolina home owned by tennessee titans corner back caleb farley. the blast decimating the 6,300 square foot mansion, killing farley's father robert. >> there was a lot of devastation. if you've been to the scene, there's nothing left of this structure except maybe a partial wall. >> reporter: investigators say the explosion happened around midnight. 25-year-old christian rogers, a family friend, somehow survived the blast. >> i noticed a young man stumbling out of the house. the first responders attending to him. it was like armageddon.

>> reporter: authorities believe the explosion was likely caused by a gas leak. the investigation is on going. >> what they're looking for primarily is the fuel. and where the fuel came from. a house explosion like this could be caused by a fuel gas leak, natural gas or propane. >> reporter: caleb farley arrived at the wreckage tuesday morning posting photos of his father on instagram calling his dad a legend, sharing a toast from the community in his father's honor. >> he may be gone. he'll never, ever be forgotten. amen. one, two, three. >> reporter: as this investigation continues, authorities have stressed there are no signs of any criminal activity here. caleb farley was a first rounds draft pick in the nfl. he used the money he made to buy this house for his father, guys. >> so sad. thank you, trevor. the former factory worker who debuted rich men north of richmond debuted at number one

we are facing a crisis here in this country with the rate of women dying during child birth that has been increasing for 20 years. racial disparity there as you see with other situations, with black women at higher risk, facing three times the rate of deaths compared to white women during pregnancy. and some women feel and perceive discrimination in their care during pregnancy and delivery. this may discourage them from speaking up, from seeking help. that's part of what this study really got to. >> so what do you think is the biggest take away for women, but in particular minority women? >> listen, i think, no one knows your body better than the person who's in that body, right? so women need to feel empowered, to speak up, to have their conversation with their health care provider, whether it's a doctor or a midwife. you should find a doctor or a midwife that you feel very comfortable with. this is a major life event. bringing a friend or family member with you a always is good idea.

and never, never, never hesitate to speak up if you feel uncomfortable, if you feel something isn't right or if you have questions. >> some medical providers are criticizing this study. why? >> the methodology with this study is getting a lot of kind of side eye view here, in terms of how it was conducted, recall bias, surveys on women five years after their pregnancy ended. not a nationally representative sample. but again, it focused on perception. perception is important. and when you're talking about this crisis, communication is at the hub of it. at the end of the day yesterday, there was a statement issuing, to improve maternal health outcomes it is important that pregnant and post partum patients feel comfortable communicating with members of their health care team. acog knows we need to do better. >> got to talk to the doctor, ask questions. dr. jen, our thanks to you, as always. robin? >> linsey, thank you very much. now to the player who captured the heart of tennis fans around

myself getting a little stagnant trying to break the top 100. i played pretty bad for a couple weeks after that, knowing one match puts me at the goal i always wanted. then miami just happened like a whirl wind. i got started off in qualifying, advanced to the quarter finals. thought that was going to be the high light of my year. little did i know i had another few good week. one good week in wyorca. two incredible weeks over there. it's all still moving, still processing. i'm able to take a step back and just process everything and use that as motivation to kind of have a strong push for the end of year. >> i'm glad to hear that. now, you were also a commentator, tennis challenge. >> yeah. >> we're going to show a little video of you coming up. can you just kind of commentate on what we're seeing? can we roll the video? >> oh my goodness. you didn't give me a warning about this. >> this is a young chris eubanks. how would you describe your play here? >> oh, man. i just turned 3 around that time. i wasn't strong enough to hold the racket with one hand so my

dad put two hands on both sides. two hand forehand, two hand back hand. that's the easiest way to swing the racket. you'll see me walking with it. i had to kind of twirl it in order to keep it up because i couldn't lift the entire racket myself. those are good memories. those are memories of my dad and i. we spent hours on the court. my older brother was out there recording that video as well. to look back how things have progressed starting from there to where i am now, remarkable. >> good commentating. very good there. do you miss the two-handed backhand? >> i do. that one hand looks pretty but you got to find a way to get it in the court. if i could do it all over again, maybe i'd keep that left hands on it. do you know what? i'm not gonna complain too much. things have been working out. >> been working out very well. you get such great support from others on the tour. coco goff, you're good friends. we saw her in the box lots of times with you at wimbeldon. when you posted about rocket man, she was like you might be rocket man but you're always the giraffe to me. how has her support and support of others helped you?

>> her in particular, it's meant the world. she's like a little sister to me. i have known coco since she was about 6 or 7. she ended up moving back to florida an we connected when i realized, when you were a little girl, we practiced on the same court. from then on it's -- i don't have a younger sibling. she an her younger brother are close as siblings. she's always told me for years, you're good enough. you just got to believe it. i'm like, coco, let me worry about it. i know these guys. they're good. i don't know if i really match up with a lot of these players. she's like, i'm telling you, you can do it. you can do it. for her to sit there and watch what was the biggest win of my career sitting there in the fourth round of wimbeldon and for her to walk through the ground, had her hat and sunglasses on, watched my quarter final match front to end. it's tough on tour to support your friends so it means the world. we're practicing today later at the open. we always try to get one hit in if we can. i texted her right before she

took the title in cincinnati and said, do you want to practice? i texted her coach. i texted her, we're practicing tomorrow? she said, are you asking or telling? i said, telling. looking forward to it. >> she's having a heck of a year as well. okay. u.s. open, what are you looking forward to most? the food, the fans, the crowd, the play? what? so much. >> combination between the crowd and the play, i think. i have always gotten great support at the open. it's always been my favorite tournament to come to as a spectator, to play in. first grand slam i have ever played in. something is telling me this will be different. the support that i have received just in practices. got a chance to practice yesterday. i'm looking forward to that. i want to roll the balls out and play. i'm enjoying the time i get to spend with you and talk to you. at the end of the day i'm here because of what i can do on the
