evening. i'm amanda. and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. at least four people, including a gunman, are dead, six others are injured following a shooting tonight at a popular bar in orange county. >> investigators say the gunman was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies as they responded to the scene. the bar called cook's corner in trabuco canyon, is well known and popular with motorcycle riders. it's about half an hour east of irvine. there was a band playing tonight, and two of its members are among those wounded in the shooting. but they are expected to recover. >> and in an update just about an hour ago, the orange county sheriff's department says the call came in at 7:04 p.m. and deputies arrived two minutes later. now we move to your voice, your vote. >> it was round one for the republic tonight in the first primary debate for the 2024 presidential election. >> eight gop hopefuls squared off against each other. but the looming figure missing from the stage, of course, former president donald trump. >> trump, who is leading in the polls by a wide margin instead

tonight. he's here now with that piece of the story. >> tim yeah, dan, tonight's debate certainly was feisty at times as each candidate tried to stand out from the crowd here in the bay area. both democrats and republicans came together to watch the evening unfold. we talked to some of them to hear what they thought. the 2024 election got a little closer wednesday night as eight republican candidates took part in the first gop presidential debate. notably absent was current frontrunner and former president donald trump. trump's absence creating an opportunity for his competitors to stand out, said abc news. political director rick klein. >> i don't know how vivek ramaswamy could have had a better night. he was the center of the conversation, not always in a positive way. >> here in the bay area, many voters gathered to watch the debate live that included john dennis, the head of the san francisco republican party, who says the folks he was with also think ramaswami did well. >> we held an informal applause from both individual was the was the runaway winner although ron desantis got some some love as did nikki haley at a watch party

on the peninsula. >> other republican voters told us they think the debate was lively and touched on key issues impacting the american public. everything from inflation to homelessness and immigration. >> what are some of the good points on this side? what are some of the points on this side? and to be able to see a diversity of people both in the debates and here at this function, local democrat s also tuned in wednesday night, a group of them gathered at manny's in san francisco for their many wanted to see the group of people not just challenging joe biden but also donald trump. >> things are really in the balance. he could win. yeah, the gop could succeed. i mean, it's going to take michigan. it's going to take north carolina. it's going to take wisconsin, western pennsylvania. >> for a lot of voters at this event, tell us, even though they don't plan on voting for anyone on the republican ticket, they think it's important to be informed. that includes sanjeev barry, who believes a lot of the issues liberals care about also impact millions of people in red states and the chew on the question of whether or not there

with those detai all right, sank you so much. >> in the north bay, a health alert is being issued for anyone who might have done the popular tough mudder obstacle race in sonoma this past weekend. some are saying they're now dealing with infections after climbing out of that mud and muck. abc seven news reporter j.r stone talked with several racers. a warning here before we go on. some of the images are graphic. i'll be fine. >> fine. >> this is video from what is being called a tough mudder race last weekend at the sonoma raceway advertised as having the world's best obstacles. but complaints are coming in by the hundreds. >> i look like i have a severe rash on both sides. >> it's pretty much gone. you can't really see much of it. but from the elbows up and the knees down, i was just covered in these these like pimply red blister pimple type things. >> i don't know if this is visible. i do have one mark on my arm. this video, you can see participants crawling in the mud

and waist to neck deep in water. >> sonoma county health services has issued a health advisory for those who participated, saying they have received complaints of staff and bacterial infections. >> there was a few times while in the race where i could smell like cow manure. >> we have an email chain out to the tough mudder organizers and it seems there's been 350 plus people and counting that have been affected by the incident. but nicole vilgrain still ended up with flu like symptoms and bumps all over her body. >> you wake up the next day and you're like, what is all of this on my arm? like, what is going on here? and it's on both arms, you know? and that's where i was digging and doing like army crawls and it's on the insides of my knees where i was pushing off as well. >> we did reach out to tough mudder to get their side of what may have happened, but have not heard back. they did send out an email saying they are taking all necessary steps to fully investigate the matter.

>> a little bit. good morning, america. >> new at 11. take a look at this dramatic video out of canada. it appears to be a well formed tornado, but it's actually a fire whirl created last week by a raging wild fire. the funnel is moving over a lake which explains the clouds swirling around the base. >> a very dramatic fire whirls are rare, but we have seen them before, of course, most notably in the 2018 car fire that happened in redding. this wildfire is one of several raging across canada, the pacific northwest and northern california. the one in siskiyou county is blamed for at least one death. >> all right. now we move to the latest on the recovery on maui and the devastating wildfire fires which have now killed more than 115 people. tonight we're learning more about the first tourist victim identified and she's from northern california. the 72 year old woman from el dorado county in the sacramento area was vacationing on maui. according to her daughter's

social media posts, the mother was supposed to return just a day after the fires broke out. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez has more from that family and on the painful process of locating others. >> a beloved mother and grandmother from northern california is the first tourist identified among the people killed in the wildfires on maui. terry cook of pollock pines was 72 years old. she was visiting and had to flee from her hotel. >> i don't blame anybody. things happen. natural disasters happen . we're human and we make mistakes. we do the best with the information we're given. but she left on foot when i heard that she had left on foot by herself. i know that everyone says to hold out hope, but there's a part of you that just knows there are as many as 1100 people unaccounted for. >> the painstaking search and identification process is now underway. the fbi is asking immediate families of those missing to provide dna samples

with those two things, if we're able to capture dna from a victim, capture of dna from a family member, we can 100% say that that person was related to the person we collected dna from . ultimately, some may never be identified. >> two damaged. you know, the fires were well over 1000 degrees, as we believe one of our roles in the fbi is to help the police department out to identify these people. so that at least should any family member be deceased, they can get some sort of closure as opposed to just not knowing whatever happened. >> lahaina resident anna galatolo is visiting northern california. >> every life that was lost is just tragic. you know, we feel like every life you know, they all have a story of whether they were tourists visiting or people that live there. they just did not have a chance to many just didn't have a chance to escape in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> president biden and his family resumed their vacation today after they returned after

he returned from hawaii to see the devastation from the wildfires and meet some of the victims. some of the family were seen at a south lake tahoe shopping center where they took a pilates class, followed by a spin class. afterward, the president was asked about the plane crash in russia that reportedly killed the head of the mercenary group that had led a brief rebellion against vladimir putin. >> i don't know for a fact what happened, but i'm not surprised . and there's not much that happens in russia, not behind, but i don't know enough to know the answer. >> the first family is expected to return to washington on saturday. it's not clear if that is going to be pushed back because of monday's visit to hawaii. new developments in the dual strikes that have shut down hollywood this summer. relief may be on the way for workers. state lawmakers are bringing back legislation that would allow those on strike to collect unemployment benefits. striking union workers typically do not qualify, and there are certain requirements in california. many

workers are worried they're going to run out of money if this strike drags on much longer. lawmakers tried to pass a similar bill in 2019, but it failed in the senate. >> america seems to be dipping further and further into credit card debt. macy's says it took huge losses in the second quarter, in part because delinquencies on its macy's credit card were much higher than expected. it comes as the nation's collective credit card debt recently topped $1 trillion. that is the highest ever. >> ikea held a grand opening for its new downtown san francisco store today. the new 52,000 square foot store three story department store is located along market street. unlike its bigger suburban stores, this location actually focuses on small space living furniture. san francisco mayor london breed says the storefront will cater to the city's ambitious housing plan in the next eight years. >> we hope to be able to build 80 to thousand units. and what does that mean? a bunch of

hour temperature change, everyone's pretty much still running higher, 3 to 10 degrees warmer than where you were yesterday on live doppler seven. we don't have any fog except in half moon bay. a little bit is trying to gather one concern. we do have is tomorrow thunderstorms are expected to develop up along the north coast where red flag warnings begin in the afternoon and run until early friday. the fire danger will be elevated up to the north . some of the smoke from those northern california fires could be seen from our east bay hills camera along with the haze. that's the time the sun was setting. so if you noticed it, this is in the upper parts of the atmosphere. the satellite picture from earlier in the day showing you that smoke drifting southward from northern california. now, tomorrow we're going to see a subtle shift in the smoke as the smoke forecast will show you. it's going to lift up to the north. but because we've got high pressure overhead said and just a lid on the atmosphere, it's still going to be hazy here in the bay area with the heat continuing inland.
