reporter: tonight's debate was feisty at times as each candidate tried to stand out from the crowd. both democrats and republicans came together to watch the evening unfold. we talked to some of them to hear what they thought. the 2024 election got closer wednesday night as eight republican candidates took part in the first gop debate. notably absent was donald trump to get his absence creating an opportunity for his competitors to stand out, says rick klein. >> i don't know how he could've had a better night. he was the center of the conversation. reporter: many voters in the bay area gathered to watch the debate live. that included the head of the san francisco republican party who says folks think ramaswamy did well. >> tonight he was the one winner. ron desantis got some love. reporter: on the peninsula,

other voters told us they think the debate was lively and touched on key issues impacting the american public. everything from inflation to homelessness and immigration. >> what are some of the good points? to be able to see diversity of people in the debates and here at this function. reporter: local democrats tuned in. a group of them gathered at manny's in san francisco. many wanted to see the group of people not just challenging joe biden but also donald trump. >> things are in the balance. the gop could succeed. it will take michigan, north carolina, wisconsin, western pennsylvania. reporter: allowed -- a lot of voters tell us, they think it's important to be informed. that includes -- who lot of issues also impact millions of people in red states. >> whether there are ways for us to engage or shift the way the

debates happen on that side of the aisle. reporter: the first official results will begin with the iowa caucuses. people will have their say on january 15. tim johns, abc7news. dan: a close advisor to former president trump rudy giuliani is now free on $150,000 bail after surrendering at the fulton county jail in atlanta. authorities have released this booking photo from today. the former new york city mayor is charged with 13 crimes in the alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in georgia. three others accused in the plot also surrendered today including sidney powell. if president trump surrender, a mugshot will be taken. abc news will ever special report once that happens. you can watch starting around 5:00 our time, right here on abc 7 or your abc 7 news bay area app.

details, coming up here get dan: in the north bay, a health alert issued for anyone who might have done the popular tough mudder obstacle race in sonoma. some are saying they are dealing with infections after climbing out of the mud. j.r. stone talked with several racers. a warning, some of the images are graphic. reporter: this is video from what's being called a tough mudder race last weekend at the sonoma raceway. advertised as having the world's best obstacles. complaints are coming in by the hundreds. >> i look like i have a severe rash on both sides. >> you can't see much of it. from the elbows up and the knees down, i was covered in pimple red blister pimple things. i don't know if this is visible. i have one mark on my arm. reporter: you can see participants crawling in the mud , neckdeep in water.

sonoma county health services has issued a health advisory for those who participated, saying they've received complaints of staff and bacterial infections. >> there was a few times in the race where i could smell, anywhere. >> it seems plus people and counting that have been affected by the incident. reporter: nicole still ended up with flulike symptoms and bumps all over her body. >> you wake up the next day like , what is all of this on my arms? what's going on here? it's on both arms. that's where i was digging and doing army crawls. it's on the inside of my knees. reporter: we reached out to tough mudder to get their side of what may have happened but have not heard back. they didn't set out e-mail saying they are taking all necessary steps to fully investigate the matter. >> there was 13 of us total in

thought he might be. chris christie. asa hutchinson brought that anti-trump agenda. but the fact that trump wasn't in the room changed the dynamics. it's unclear to me how exactly this will impact the race because we haven't seen trump yet. clearly he is going to be the big figure. but for now, at least, the different candidates are looking for an in trying to find an argument against trump and offering some pretty radically different policy positions along the way. lionel and morgan all right, rick, thank you so much. >> former president trump now pivoting from the campaign today. his focus will now be on turning himself into george. authorities on racketeering and conspiracy charges. >> yeah, three of trump's more notable co-defendants in that case surrendered yesterday. rudy giuliani said he howl. and jenna ellis, all lawyers are booked and charged in atlanta. abc's aaron katersky has details. >> the man once known as america's mayor swarmed by reporters as he left the fulton county jail after he had his mugshot taken like a common criminal. this indictment is a travesty. the former mayor, who was said to be nearly broke, arrived in atlanta aboard a private plane. he's now free on
