into jail in atlanta. trump is back home in new jersey but remains defiant as ever as his legal problems pileup. ama: we are following this story in atlanta. reporter: former president donald trump officially arrested, fingerprinted, and processed in georgia. the first-ever mugshot of a former american president i release get after arriving in his motorcade, he was in and out within a half hour, released on $200,000 bond and pledge he won't threaten witnesses. this is the fourth time trump is facing felony criminal charges in the past few months. they stem from his alleged efforts to overturn the result of george's 2020 presidential election. he claims this case is politically motivated. >> what is taking place here is a travesty of justice. they are doing election interference. they want to interfere with an

election. there's never been anything like it in our country before. reporter: trump shook up his legal team, adding a well-known atlanta criminal defense attorney. >> i think we are really looking at, what's his relationship going to be given that he's hired some pretty good attorneys for this very serious case against him. reporter: many of his alleged co-conspirators have turned themselves in before the friday noon deadline including mark meadows today. he has a hearing set for monday to determine whether his case will be moved to federal court. jeffrey clark is also seeking to move his case to federal court. his hearing is set for september 18. another one of trump's codefendants requested a speedy trial in district attorney proposed october 23 which was approved by the judge overseeing the case. the former president is back home tonight but not for long. he will have to return to woodland to soon for a court date.

dan: analyst at 5:00 today about this and she highlighted the gravity of the latest legal troubles. >> we have to sit back and think , this is the former president of the united states. while he was president, he potentially committed treacherous acts. the charges against him are truly daunting. dan: they are piling up. >> they are. dan: she expects the former president to try to raise money off the georgia case and her prediction is right. his campaign is selling a variety of items including a t-shirt with his mugshot on it that says, never surrender. he posted on x for the first time in more than two years. you could watch live as trump was processed earlier this evening. we sent this push alert through the app with link to our live coverage.

certainly saw smoke in the upper parts of the atmosphere. the sun definitely be prepared and avoid exposure to the smoke if you can. if you have ac, recirculate. dan: thank you. developing news and the deadly wildfires on maui. the family of a man killed is the first to sue for wrongful death against maui's four main utility companies. the lawsuit blames the utilities for being negligent and how they handled their equipment and for failing to prepare. video indicates sparks from power lines into -- ignited the fire. the county sued the hawaiian electric company over the fires to get the death toll is now 115. more than 800 people still unaccounted for. in a statement tonight from hawaii electric, the company says, our primary focus in the

and wherever you stream. ama: we have a story about never giving up your get a group of graduates got their high school diplomas at san jose city hall. part of a free library program to build a better bay area. as lauren martinez shows us, it's only the start of the graduates journey. >> i feel so proud of myself today. reporter: viviana is receiving her high school diploma. her cap and gown decorated as an ode to her own country -- home country of columbia. >> i'm so excited. it was a dream and it came true. reporter: six years ago, she fled violence in colombia and came to the u.s.. >> i was upset. i came to this country to clean restrooms like some immigrants do. reporter: she didn't want a low income drop forever.

with her limited english she enrolled in the career online high school, a program offered for free. she says, if i can do it, can do it. the program asks for commitment and dedication. now she's one of 10 adults earning their high school diploma and a career certificate. >> keep working hard for my kids and show them i can do that. i'm old. in scholarships. enter to win. ama: a cold case in mountain view from more than 30 years ago. a judge has stopped and effort for a new murder trial for the 1992 killing. dan: the family refuses to allow the search for justice to end here. reporter: nearly 31 years ago, lori houtz was found strangled to death in mountain view, less than a mile from where she worked. she was just 25 years old. >> we feel as if she has died all over again. reporter: the prime suspect in this case was rearrested.

prosecutors say new dna technology confirmed his dna was on the rope used to kill lori. this week, a judge dismissed the case over concerns about double jeopardy. >> now new dna evidence has tied him to the murder weapon. so it's logical to go forward with the case and for it to be tried. one more trial. that's what we are pit stop about. reporter: woodward was tried twice for the case in the 90's. lori's sister says this case was eventually dismissed by a judge for what they called at the time insufficient evidence when the jury could not reach a verdict. >> when the judge in 96 dismissed the case, he said, this doesn't mean you can't bring the case again. it means you can't bring the case with the evidence that you currently have. reporter: here is stephen clark. >> what the defense is saying is that, when the judge dismissed the case in the 90's, that that amounted to an acquittal and

therefore mr. woodward could never be tried again. reporter: clarke says this could set back cold case prosecutions across the country based on this ruling. >> to see this case going to the california supreme court to get clarity on this, because of the amount that rides on it. reporter: the district attorney said, we are appealing the judges decision because we want the defendant held accountable for murder. woodward is expected to be back in court tuesday to decide whether he will remain under house arrest during the appeals process. >> very helpful that we through this process and change the law for the better so that cold cases can be tried successfully. reporter: lena howland, abc 7 news. dan: the san francisco police department is fed up with car break-ins across the city. chief william scott is announcing a new plan to crackdown. he says he will use an increase in funding to add more patrols

interest neighborhoods. he plans to use bait cars to try to catch thieves in the act. >> i'm not going to go into a lot of detail. by design, we want the people who are breaking into cars to be caught. we believe bait cars will do that. reporter: the operation has the full support of city prosecutors. the da promises to go after those who are caught, saying there needs to be consequences. there have been 13,300 31 reported car break-ins so far this year. that is slightly fewer than this time last year. you can track these kinds of crimes where you live. just use our neighborhood fety tracker. you'll find it on the front page of abc 7 news. ama: a popular spot for uc santa cruz students is getting barricaded. empire cave is now off-limits and locked up with a metal gate. the cave is hailed as one of the

most bio diverse caverns in california, home to more than subterranean creatures. the cave has become one of the most visited locations on property. the university put up the barrier to preserve the caves sensitive ecosystem. >> once we realized how many people were visiting the cave, we realized we needed to take action to protect the species that called the cave home. ama: some of the species include spiders, moths, scorpions, crustaceans. at least four of the species haven't been found anywhere else on earth. dan: just a couple weeks ago, taylor swift atlee vase. we are a week away from beyonce's return to the bay area. preparations are underway around levi's stadium. beyonce's renaissance tour comes next wednesday. they plan to add 30% more passenger capacity for light rail service to and from the stadium. extra bus service will be on standby to supplement light rail if needed.
