>> the local utility company is now facing lawsuits over their response to the deadly wildfire there. the claims are familiar to us here in the bay area. good morning to you on this friday, august 25th. >> let's start with a check of our forecast with lisa. >> all right. we are getting into our cooldown. our marine layer has deepened. it is traveling across the hills there into the east bay. so it's over 2000ft deep and starting out with cloudy skies. and yesterday, if you were closer to the shoreline, boy, the sea breeze was blowing, but the temperature is still very mild as we don't have a whole lot of upwelling yet to cool off these numbers. but we will. we'll get there. the numbers in the low to mid 60s this morning. so it is mild still. palo alto, 66. hayward is 66. so between this time today and yesterday, we're still looking at a 2 to 6 degree, 24 hour temperature change with cooler numbers. there's a look at sfo air quality, moderate in the north bay, the coast, the central bay . elsewhere, it is good as that

a former news photographer. thieves in san francisco broke into three vehicles in just two minutes. i'll watch. all while he watched and recorded this recently. san francisco police say they are fed up with these break ins and are taking action to stop them. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez live in san francisco this morning with details on this plan to crack down on criminals. >> yeah, reggie part of that plan includes that police will be increasing their patrols at fisherman's wharf where i am right now as well as at other popular tourist spots like alamo square. also the palace of fine arts and sfpd says that they are also building cases against larger criminal enterprise. is that sell that stolen property? now, most of us know that brazen car break ins are happening every day across san francisco, especially in popular tourist areas. sfpd chief william scott says his department is adding more officers and tourist neighborhoods and he plans to use bait cars to catch thieves. >> when people come in to this

city or people who are in this city break in the cars, they may be breaking into cars that are put out there by the san francisco police department. we intend to catch people in the act. these are very, very. thank you. now, just spoke to media at the palace of fine arts yesterday, tourist lindsay dobler from missouri got her family's rental car broken into near the same spot. >> she says they shattered her glass, stole four backpacks with electronics, even their passports. the sfpd says that so far this year, there have been 13,331 reported car break ins, compared to 13,493 for the same time period last year. this year's numbers are slightly lower and da brooke jenkins says that they will hold those cities accountable. live in san francisco, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. gloria thank you. >> new this morning, a crash

involving another cruise car in san francisco is under investigation. this happened at the intersection of geary boulevard and golf street just before ten last night. you can see the cruise car suffered a lot of damage and it's unclear exactly what happened here. so this comes a week after a fire truck responding to a call crashed into a cruise car. a passenger in that car was hurt earlier this week. the company announced it pulled 50% of its fleet from the streets at the request of the dmv over safety concerns. >> today, officers from the antioch and pittsburg police departments are expected to be back in court for a hearing. it's coming after an indictment unveiled last week that alleged fraud, corruption and excessive force between a group of officers. the investigation also exposed the massive racist text messaging scandal in the antioch police department. eight of the officers had first court appearances earlier this month. this morning, former president trump is defiant and on the offensive after being booked and processed in a georgia jail last night. jobina is at the live

desk with what he's saying about his time at the fulton county jail. thank you. >> kumasi. the former president spent just 20 minutes inside the fulton county jail last night. he was fingerprinted and had a mugshot taken before he left and quickly returned to the airport to go back home to his place in new jersey. trump and 18 co defendants are accused of trying to overturn the 2020 election results in georgia. he was released on a $200,000 bond with conditions to not threaten any potential witnesses. that includes on social media. a judge has granted a speedy trial for the 19 co-defendants in total. that will be in october. but trump's team will request for a separate trial at a later date. >> it looks like we're getting ready to go to trial october 23rd. the only question is whether donald trump will be sitting next to him when they're in that trial. >> prosecutors are also looking at a possible plea agreement at an arraignment in september. in an interview last night, trump described his recent legal

troubles as, quote, terrible and says the charges are, quote, politically motivated. and this morning, he's already trying to make money off of his latest indictment, selling everything from t shirts to bumper stickers with his mugshot on them. so we'll, of course, continue to watch those developments. reggie thank you, jobina to your voice , your vote. >> the first republican primary debate is already swaying some voters. it appears. debate watchers believe ron desantis had the best performance wednesday, according to multiple surveys. the florida governor, vivek excuse me, vivek ramaswamy and nikki haley were the three standouts. haley gained the most potential supporters before for the debate. 30% of voters said they would consider voting for her. that number is now at 47. desantis also saw a jump in the number of people considering him. he went from 63% to 67, which is higher than donald trump. desantis spent yesterday campaigning in iowa, reluctant to criticize trump. >> here you're meeting voters,

the former presidents getting arrested. >> well, but here's the thing. >> it's so candidates got to got to decide how much are they going to indulge with some of this? >> ramaswamy's campaign says he raised $450,000 after the debate . trump is expected to skip the next debate, which is scheduled for september 27th. a big win for google in its legal battle with republican national committee. a federal judge has dismissed an rnc lawsuit accusing google of censoring donation emails by sending them to users. spam folders. the rnc argued google was discriminating against it for its political views. the judge ruled google fairly concluded the messages were spam. >> developing news in the deadly wildfires on maui overnight, officials updated the number of people who are unaccounted for in the wildfires to 388 people, which is significantly down from more than 1000. yesterday. maui county has now filed a lawsuit against hawaiian electric, claiming the wildfires could have been avoided if the company

just turned off the power before the wildfires began. witness accounts and video indicate sparks from power lines ignite those flames a week after the fires, hawaiian electric officials said unlike p-g-and-e's, hawaii does not have a shut off program. then overnight, the company released a statement about the lawsuit saying, quote, our primary focus in the wake of this unimaginable tragedy has been to do everything we can to support not just the people of maui, but also maui county. we are very disappointed that maui county chose this litigious path while the investigation is still unfolding, 115 people died in the fires and fewer than half of those people have been identified. these white crosses are being installed along the lahaina bypass. a main road to honor the lives lost in burned areas. >> a spray painted x means crews have already searched for remains there. one woman returns daily to what's left of her lahaina home. she is there to

care for her cats. all three of them made it through the fire. she thinks they survived by hiding in a storm drain the night that the fires hit. a north bay community is showing its support for the island of maui community members came together for a benefit concert called sonoma, maui. strong to raise funds for wildlife relief efforts. wildfire excuse me, relief efforts, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the hawaii community foundation. maui strong fund. last night's concert was held at hot monk tavern in sebastopol and if you'd like to help with the maui wildfire relief efforts, you can make a donation to the red cross . just visit redcross.org, slash abc. >> new video into the abc seven newsroom shows some of the flames from wildfires burning in far northern california. the smith river complex includes 27 wildfire fires burning near the california oregon border. you can see our abc seven news wildfire tracker. it's that cluster of fires in the northwest corner of the state. those fires could have impacts here in the bay area today as

they burn, we might see smoky, hazy skies here in the bay area. we don't have a spare the air alert, but as you look at this map here, the light blue indicates that smoke well, soft over 20,000ft. >> so to the north and west, yes, there's all the activity along the california oregon border. and we get left with a bit of haze. but those onshore winds are certainly cranking up. they did yesterday and they'll continue to today. this upper level system will promote some cooling and then it's going to pull back and we'll be looking at high pressure building in as soon as the weekend for another warm up starting out pretty minor, though. so cloudy skies with a marine layer over 2000ft deep this morning and temperatures still mild. we're 68 in san jose, 65, los altos hills with low 60s san francisco. cooler numbers in the lower 60s in the north bay. so there's a look at all the fog pulls back by the afternoon. so partly cloudy at the coast, partly cloudy for the first half of the day around the bay. and

hands. sean mccauley is using $50,000 of his own money to install a license plate readers at his properties across the city. earlier this month at the antioch marina, where he owns property, one car ended up in the water and another hit a fire hydrant. three people got hurt. mccauley believes people need to be held accountable in order to make the city safer. >> that data goes right back to the police department. and if there's anything that occurs, incidences that occur here, they can get real time data and they can get historical data. >> the plan is raising some privacy concerns. the electronic frontier foundation is a nonprofit that defends civil liberties in the digital world. it calls automated license plate readers a mass surveillance technology because of the data that's collected. mccauley says he did consult with the city and police department about this plan in the south bay san jose. >> city leaders are pushing the owners of a vacant church to clean it up or face thousands of dollars in fines. the historic first church of christ scientist

used to look like what you see there on the left. now on the right is what it looks like now. it's covered in scaffolding and construction, tarps, controversial real estate company cal properties purchased this in 2017. and the city has been finding the owners $1,000 a day for code violations. but the current cap on fines in the city is $100,000. mayor matt mehan and council member omar torres are now proposing the city council approve a new fine limit of $500,000. >> my office, my team have been flooded with emails and phone calls about what our constituents call the trash bag church. >> what is a beautiful, historic landmark has become an eyesore because of one negligent property owner. >> the city is hoping to obtain the building so it can work with the preservation action council to restore it. abc7 news tried to contact xl properties. all business numbers though were offline.

>> more than a dozen small businesses will be popping up in downtown san francisco next month. 17 were picked to open pop ups in empty storefronts for the vacant to vibrant program. it's part of the mayor's plan to revitalize downtown. one recipient is devil's teeth baking company in the outer sunset. it's getting three months of free rent for a pop up at one embarcadero center. it's terrific that the city is helping us and not just me, but there's all sorts of diverse, creative activators that are coming down there now. >> and i think it's going to really make a difference. okay we're going to go to that one because that's basically next door to us and this empty storefront at 201 jackson street is also getting two pop ups. >> that includes a multimedia agency and a skate collective streetwear apparel brand called brujas. this one's close to that also is close. the vacant to vibrant program is accepting applications loans for future phases. >> now to an honor of a lifetime. a bronze statue of kobe bryant will soon sit outside of the home of the los

angeles lakers. his wife, vanessa bryant, made that announcement yesterday on behalf of the lakers. >> my daughters and me, i'm so honored that right in the center of los angeles, in front of the place known as the house that kobe built, we are going to unveil his statue so that his legacy can be celebrated forever . i hope to see you there. the lakers say kobe was a part of the statue's planning before his death. >> he and his daughter, gianna, along with seven other people, died in a helicopter crash in 2020. the statue will be unveiled on february 8th. and there's meaning behind that date, too. 824 gianna wore number two, kobe wore number eight and 24 during each half of his lakers career. well, if you thought taylor swift's era tour was over, think again. the second leg of the tour continues in mexico, though, and swifties there are thrilled to see her in their country for the first time. fans travel from all over the country for this experience

. use swift's tour gross to point $2 billion in sales just in the us, according to research firm question pro. she plays in mexico for three more nights then is heading to argentina and brazil. >> we're less than a week away from beyonce's return to the bay area and preparations are already underway in and around levi's stadium in santa clara. beyonce's renaissance tour comes to levi's wednesday. vtr plans to add 30% more passenger capacity for light rail service to and from the stadium. the night of the show. extra bus service will be on standby to supplement light rail if it's needed. and after the concert, vta will run light rail trains until all passengers are cleared from the great america station in santa clara. city. leaders have pushed the stadium's curfew time back by one hour from the usual 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. and don't forget that beyonce asked us to wear silver so we can reflect off of each other like we're giant disco balls. so here's a look at some of the major acts coming to the bay

tax revenue for soma, where the mall is located, has seen a 25% drop from the first quarter of 2019 down to 2023, according to the city's office of economic and workforce development. the way people shop has changed, noting younger people in particular want to see short term shopping options or pop ups or new concepts in general. >> we're hoping that in the short term we can bring those vendors down to ground floor where they have visibility and access to the public and that we keep visitation to that mall. and then over the long term, we work with both those existing businesses and some exciting new concepts for what might happen there. >> and one of those concepts, a soccer stadium, mayor london breed, confirms the city is still in the very, very early stages of working on a feasibility study in the area, she explains. it's not just a plan for a soccer stadium, but it's showing people what's possible, adding when thinking about what is downtown in light of the challenges around retail

that residents in the city are just so sick of these brazen car break-ins happening across the city every single day. tourist lindsay dobbelaere from missouri got her family's rental car broken into near the palace of fine arts yesterday. she says they shattered her glass, stole four backpacks with electronics and passports. and this happened just before the san francisco police chief talked to the media about their new crackdown on car break-ins and that happened in the same area. he says his department is adding more officers and tourist neighborhoods and he plans to use bait cars to catch thieves. marina district residents are hopeful these break ins can be stopped. >> are you sick of it? >> of course i am. it's been going on too long and we need to do more. and the only thing that we've seen as neighbors work is actual police presence. >> my reaction? don't sick and tired of this happening to people in the city. i said, you know, i've had my car broken in long ago. i have a piece of my family whose car has been broken

awareness now and encouraging everyone to get vaccinated this fall. the updated vaccine comes as covid hospitalizations are on the rise, doubling in the month of july. the cdc reports that 97% of people in the us ages 16 and over already have some immunity from the virus. this is due to individuals receiving a previous vaccine prior to infection or both. health officials still suggest people get the updated shot because they say, quote, immunity wanes and the covid 19 virus continues to change. besides the covid vaccine, officials will also recommend flu shots for the general population and rsv shots for some communities. coomassie. >> thank you, jobina. coming up, the latest on negotiate options in keeping hollywood at a standstill in the latest major movie to be impacted by the strikes. >> organizations like schools and churches can now apply to receive a moon tree from nasa. we'll explain what that is. but first, a check on the weather from lisa.

>> it's friday. good morning, everybody. we have a cool down that got underway yesterday. more dramatic today. you can see that system to the north and west of us. it's an area of low pressure that will allow for stronger onshore winds and those will reach our inland valleys. already the southwest wind ramping up to over 30 miles an hour through the delta. that is allowing for the cloudy start out there. exploratorium camera , so cloudy with patchy coastal fog this morning. a little bit of haze in parts of the coastal community as the north bay. all that activity with the fires to the north and west of us, the smith river complex fire really going off and looking at the breezy winds at the coast. the gradual warming trend starts tomorrow. so we are cloudy everywhere, thinning out by late in the morning hours for sunshine, even a few areas of sun at the coast. and then as we get into the overnight hours, back to the fog. but it retreats quicker for a warmer saturday, back to the low to mid 90s inland tomorrow with mid 70s to near 80 around the bay shore in

in our inland valleys. the low clouds and fog reaching concord and livermore. so it's over 2000ft deep. the marine layer, maybe even up to 2500ft. but we still have the mild temperatures . that's because we haven't had a steady onshore flow or that upwelling. the northwestern winds that bring the source of that widespread cooler temperature spread. but we'll get there. right now, it is 64 in san leandro, 66 in hayward. the winds do look to kick up right on through the next several days despite our warm up, we'll see that consistent northwesterly flow in these 60 degree water temperatures will be going down, especially into next week as our temperatures do go up. so it's all about the wind going over that cold ocean water, 2 to 6 degrees cooler this morning. livermore well, you are going to have a pleasant day today. sunny skies, upper 80s near average, a few degrees warmer for the weekend and then looking at the peak heat arriving into the middle of next week for everyone. highs today 80in san jose. it's a warm one

spacex dragon capsule endurance is taking four astronauts to the international space station. >> nasa has released the first data maps from its pollution monitoring instrument called tempo. tempo creates visual representation of pollution and air quality over north america. it takes scans every hour from 22,000 miles above the equator. the agency says the data will improve studies of pollution from sources, including traffic and smoke and ash from forest fires. >> now to shedding light on the sun, scientists may have unraveled a long standing mystery, which has to do with precisely how the sun generates the solar wind, which has long puzzled researchers. a new observations by the solar orbiter spacecraft might have an answer. scientists say the orbiter detected tiny jets of material escaping from the sun's atmosphere. they say those jets could be a major source of mass and energy to sustain the solar
