gma3 anchors. >> hi! >> good to see you, george. >> this is the first time we've done this together. we have a lot of news to get to. we're going to begin with the latest on donald trump, back home in jersey after surrendering to authorities in georgia. there you see it right there trump's mug shot. that is a piece of history. an american president has never had a mug shot before. this follows rudy giuliani and other associates who were booked this week. aaron katersky is in atlanta with the latest. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning. it was almost surreal repetition, former president trump surrendered, booked and here in atlanta photographed. now that photograph is part of the defense. the defense he's mounting in a fourth criminal case. this morning the first mug shot of a former american president donald trump glowering into the camera at the fulton county jail where he turned himself in to face charges he conspired to overturn results of the 2020

election in georgia. >> really believe this is a very sad day for america. this should never happen. >> reporter: trump arrived in atlanta on his private plane, waving and giving thumbs up on his way to surrender for the fourth time this year. unlike the prior three, this time trump was booked at a jail where he was fingerprinted and photographed. his height and weight provided in advance to speed things along. trump was in and out in less than half hour, released on $200,000 bond. he put up 10% with the help of a local bail bondsman. before leaving atlanta, trump offering a defense. >> we did nothing wrong at all and we have every right, every single right to challenge an election that we think is dishonest. >> reporter: trump did challenge the election in court. he filed more than 60 lawsuits contesting aspects of it, losing all but one. the indictment alleges he was atop a criminal organization that tried to help him cling to power. his one time chief of staff mark meadows and his former attorney rudy giuliani are among 18 alleged co-conspirators. fulton county district attorney fani willis wants to try them all together but the judge

granted a request by one defendant for a speedy trial and said it would begin october 23rd. another defendant, john eastman, is also pursuing an expedited trial. in a court filing, former president trump says a trial for him less than two months from now would be way too soon. now overnight, george, five more co-defendants turned themselves in, leaving two remaining. they have until noon today to surrender. otherwise prosecutors will begin issuing arrest warrants. george? >> thanks. let's bring in our legal analyst dan abrams. rachel scott is on the campaign trail in iowa. this was different from the previous arraignments. he had his mug shot taken. did she get any special treatment? >> he got the same treatment that any white collar defendant with a high priced lawyer who can negotiate bond ahead of time would get. right? that's the key point.

the ability to negotiate bond before you get there allows the process to move very quickly. did this process move even more quickly? maybe a little bit. but bottom line is, if you're in this financial situation with a high priced lawyer, in this kind of crime, this is typically what would happen. >> he didn't pay the full bond. he used a bail bondsman. >> yeah, yeah. >> that was something. we're going to see a lot of different maneuvering. we already saw one of the co-defendants move for a speedy trial. trump doesn't want that. >> correct. you have one possibly more of the defendants now saying we want a speedy trial. that is your constitutional right to a speedy trial. and in georgia, that means you're gonna get it. the defendants who say, we want a speedy trial, are going to get a speedy trial. the question will be, how much can the other defendants, in particular donald trump, who does not want a trial moving quickly, going to be able to delay the process. but it is clear to me that there is no way all these defendants are going to end up getting

tried together. >> doesn't seem like that. rachel, we saw trump's return to twitter, tweeting out that mug shot. he's raising a lot of money off it. >> reporter: donald trump was fund-raising off of that mug shot, george, before his plane even touched down back in bedminster. then he made a surprise and sudden return back to the platform formerly known as twitter. this was his biggest megaphone for a year. he was banned after january 6th. reinstated by the platform's new owner, elon musk. he posted the mug shot with the caption never surrender. still very defiant. >> you're in iowa. we saw the debate. donald trump still the big front runner in iowa. what's the mood from what you can tell on the ground? >> reporter: four indictments, 91 charges total. and trump still has a commanding lead in this race. most voters are standing by the former president even right here in iowa. i talked to some republican voters who tell me they could still change their mind.

they're concerned that this could be distracting for the republican party. you have this remarkable split screenplaying out as the president was being booked and processed in georgia. his closest rival ron desantis, back out here on the campaign trail. he told me he doesn't want this to overwhelm the party, but of course it is casting a very big shadow. >> i want to go back to the timing. this is the fourth felony indictment now for the president. he's facing four possible trials. any of them happen before the election? >> i think the most likely one to happen before the election is either the d.c. federal case or potentially that new york -- >> classified documents? >> classified documents case. the other case, not the classified documents. i think the classified documents case in front of judge cannon likely will not happen before the election. it's the d.c. case that i think actually might happen before the election. i think that's going to be tough, too, though. i think it's probably 50/50 as to whether any of these cases will happen before the election. donald trump is going to do everything he can to extend the

time. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. demarco? turning to severe storms that slammed the midwest overnight bringing flash floods and knocking out power for thousands. that storm is now on the move. rob marciano has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, demarco. it's here in the new york metro area, northern and central new jersey getting it. boston, you're in, it too. in the last 24 hours it's the midwest and great lakes getting it far worse. overnight a tornado touching down in southeast michigan. tractor trailers flipping over, careening off the interstate, shutting it down in both directions. roofs blown off homes, barns destroyed. damaging winds and crippling rains forcing michigan's governor to activate the state's emergency operations center. >> power completely out in the town. >> reporter: more than 150 flights cancelled at detroit metro airport amid flooding at one of the terminals. how does anybody get to their

flight? you've got everything blocked off. >> reporter: some passengers forced to hike to the airport to make their flights. >> we're thinking of von trapping it and walking across the hills to get to the terminal. >> reporter: others dragging luggage through floodwaters on foot. >> we've gone about a mile so far. i think we've got two more miles to enterprise. >> reporter: i know somebody trying to get on their plane yesterday did not make it until later that night. that has cleared out, thankfully, out of ohio and michigan. here it is on the i 95 corridor, even back through west virginia. lot of lightning with this and a flood advisory out for new jersey and staten island. 1 to 1.5 inches per rain hour. the rain rate here. this is heavy stuff right during the morning rush. it will calm down and restart in the afternoon as this pretty strong cold front pushes through and at least cools people off. eva? >> that's a positive way to look at it. thanks. now to russian president putin breaking his silence over the apparent death of the leader of the wagner mercenary group in a plane crash near moscow. this as we learned more about what may have brought that plane

down. tom soufi-burridge is in ukraine with the latest. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, eva. yeah, u.s. officials saying yvgeney prigozhin's private jet was not shot down by a missile. there could have been an explosion on board. this morning the kremlin calling the allegation it was involved an absolute lie. this morning new clues into why that private jet disintegrated shortly after takeoff from moscow killing everyone on board. u.s. officials say it's likely yvgeney prigozhin's is among the dead. he is the man who led a mutiny against the kremlin. prigozhin's turning against russia's ministry of defense weeks ago, launching a mutiny on moscow. putin called it a stab in the back. the russian leader now reacting to prigozhin's apparent death, praising his one time friend calling him a talented business man. but putin saying prigozhin had a

complex destiny and made serious mistakes in life. >> there's a lot of ironic symmetry here. the fact that his plane crashed exactly two months to the day that he declared his march on moscow, and the fact that he had also shot down a plane with about 13 russian service members on board. >> reporter: one witness saying she saw prigozhin's jet explode in the sky then plummet to the ground. this video circulating online. u.s. intelligence assessment saying it was a deliberate explosion according to the associated press, with the pentagon ruling out that a missile shot the plane down. >> nothing to indicate, no information to suggest, that there was a surface to air missile. >> reporter: experts who believe putin had prigozhin killed, saying he's showing the world he's in full control. this morning u.s. officials saying they are considering a variety of causes as to what brought that plane down.

george? >> thanks. overnight maui county filed a lawsuit against hawaiian electric over the deadly wild fire disaster in lahaina claiming they didn't turn off the equipment before the fire started. mola lenghi is on maui. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. this lawsuit alleging the wild fire that killed at least 115 people and destroyed thousands of structures could have been avoided. overnight maui county filing a lawsuit against energy firm hawaiian electric which provides electricity to 95% of the state. the lawsuit accusing the aleck trick company of failing to turn off electric equipment before the deadly wild fires began and that the company knew the high winds would topple power poles, knock down power lines and ignite vegetation. according to the suit, the devastation could have avoided if the electricity was cut. >> tree fell over, hit the power lines. that's what started the fire.

>> reporter: in a press conference a week after the fire, an electric company rep said that unlike california, hawaii does not have a shut off program, saying they are controversial and not universally accepted. the lawsuit states hawaiian electric was also derelict in their duty to properly maintain and repair its power lines, as well as keep vegetation trimmed to prevent contact with overheadlines and other electrical equipment. i spoke with firefighters who recalled the intensify. >> i pulled some of our big eftd line off the truck to secure water supply. one of the larger gusts was able to take the line and me and knock me into a tree. i'm a fairly big guy. pretty decently strong, i'd hope. it took me off my feet. >> reporter: this morning the county of maui also releasing a list of the names of the 388 individuals still unaccounted for. well, a spokes person for

hawaiian electric saying at this point cause of the fire has not yet been determined and the company will work with the county and the state as they conduct their review, guys? >> mola, thank you. now to the new covid variant that has scientists concerned. cdc saying this is notable because of its multiple mutation. victor oquendo is in atlanta at cdc headquarters with the latest for us. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, demarco. here at the cdc, they're looking into this new omicron subvariant but stress it's far too early to tell if it's more transmissable or if it causes more serious illness. there have only been nine cases identified world wide, including two in the united states. it's also been detected in our waste water. the cdc says it appears current testing and medications work against the variant, but because of the different genetic mutations, it may be more capable of causing infection in people who have previously had covid-19 or have received covid-19 vaccines.

scientists are working to confirm if the updated booster will be effective against it. here at the cdc, officials say that new booster will be available mid september. guys? >> victor oquendo, thank you. now to the new video of the cable car rescue hundreds of feet above the earth. drone footage showing, look at this, six children and two adults trapped midair before crews dropped them down to safety. james longman has the details. good morning to you, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, eva. that dangling cable car really did have the whole world holding its breath. everyone so relieved that the rescue was pulled off successfully. now we're getting an up close look at what it was really like in that tiny carriage. this morning new heart pounding video showing the dramatic rescue of the eight people trapped in a pakistan cable car tuesday. watch as this drone video shows up close the six children and

two adults trapped 600 feet in the air after one of the cables holding their cable car snapped. the group was stranded for roughly 16 hours before military choppers arrived to the scene, saving this child seen swinging from the dangling car, hoisted by a safety line. as conditions got too dangerous for the helicopters, this daring responder bravely climbing out on the cable to rescue the remaining few. the final two passengers made it back to land in the dimmed hours of the night, arriving to cheer, celebrating their safety. cable cars like these are a life line for residents in these mountainous areas which have few roads. the children, ages 10-15, some roughly 150 kids reliant on this cable car system to get to school. one saying, we were very scared and, i thought it was our last day. with that route out of action, local kids face an up to two hour walk to get to school.

body camera footage showing the release of shana gardner, the woman accused of plotting the murder of her ex-husband. video shows armed officers taking gardner out the front door of her parents washington home bare foot and in handcuffs, her mother wiping away tears. prosecutors claim last february gardner's ex-husband dropped off two children he co-parented with gardner at her house in jacksonville beach florida. on his way home this tire blocked his path and he was gunned down in cold blood in front of his 2-year-old daughter. henry tennan has pleaded guilty to charges he pulled the trigger. prosecutors stressed from the beginning he didn't act alone. in march, police arrested gardner's second husband, accusing him of playing part in planning the murder. gardner's arrest then followed last week. the police body camera footage, she remains calm as she's taken into the police vehicle and to

jail. >> i have one female in custody. >> reporter: at one point lightly laughing about the heat. >> my vehicle can't keep up. >> reporter: at the press conference announcing gardner's arrest, jarod's widow said everything in her soul told her shana was behind her husband's murder. >> shana's arrest ends one horrific chapter of our pursuit for justice for jarod. now we open a new one. this next chapter will be excruciating. we expect to see justice carried out to the fullest extent of the law. >> reporter: prosecutors do say they are going to seek the death penalty here. shana gardner is still in custody in washington state fighting her extradition to florida. she's due in court next month. we're going to turn now to lizzo firing back at the backup dancers suing her for harassment. her lawyer now says she plans to countersue. stephanie ramos is here with the

story. >> reporter: good morning, george. after lizzo was sued for alleged sexual, racial and religious harassment this month, the singer's lawyers claim lizzo plans to counter sue for the plaintiffs quote hypocritical behavior. ♪ this morning lizzo is fighting back. >> watch out for the big girls. >> reporter: the grammy winning artist is allegedly planning to counter sue her backup dancers who have filed a lawsuit against the singer, claiming she harassed them while on tour. lizzo's lawyer telling abc news the lawsuit is a sham. lizzo intends to sue for malicious prosecution after she prevails and these claims are dismissed. [ cheers ] the singer all shared photos of the dancers, quote, happily cavorting backstage with performers at a paris cabaret

show as evidence to support lizzo's position. >> what we're going to have to develop is the discovery. what happens across the course of their employment? what was required? what were they subjected to? >> reporter: earlier this month former dancers ariana davis, crystal williams and noel rodriguez filed a lawsuit against lizzo claiming the singer created a hostile work environment, weight shamed them and pressured them to participate in parties with overly sexual atmospheres. >> it was a heart breaking experience to go through, just because we looked up to this woman. >> reporter: lizzo firing back at the allegations days later writing on instagram, these sensationalized stories are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted that they were told their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional. the dancers spoke to abc's kelley carter responding to the post. >> it's completely kind of invalidates all of our experience and trauma and our pain.

>> reporter: attorneys for the dancers now responding to lizzo's plans to counter sue, saying lizzo's threat to counter sue for malicious prosecution is an attempt at intimidation and delivers a chilling effect to all harassment victims in the work place. >> this is about empowering people, supposedly what lizzo stands for. these kinds of tactics and these kind of brash and really empty threats only serve to disenfranchise people. we should have a larger conversation about these things, not try to silence and suppress them. >> reporter: despite these new photos, legal representation for the plaintiffs say they stand by every claim in the lawsuit and look forward to a trial. guys, this may be a very lengthy process. >> most certainly. but we're hearing from both sides. thank you very much. we appreciate it. now to a health warning following a tough mudder race in california. officials say a number of people got sick with infections.

kayna whitworth has the latest. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: the health department issuing an advisory for anyone who participated or even watched the race if they have symptoms of a rash or fever, to see a doctor. it's the popular obstacle races designed to challenge your endurance and team work as you run, climb and swim through mud. but this morning more than 70 people falling ill after competing in the tough mudder course at sonoma race way in northern california last weekend. >> 12 of the 13 people that i went with got this. >> reporter: 24 hours after the race, reports of rash, fever, muscle pain, nausea and vomiting came flooding into the county health department from some who competed. >> aside from the rash, they started to feel physically ill. cold sweats. mild fever. >> reporter: video from the weekend show people crawling on their hands and knees and wading through waist deep water,

typical for the event. >> i really did not think this was something that i should be aware of, you know? i was thinking, i'm physically fit, so i can do the obstacle events. when i looked at my skin, i noticed a lot of blisters and kind of bumps. >> reporter: sonoma county health officials say this could be a range of illnesses, from mild irritation to staph infections or possibly a rare skin infection which requires antibiotics. >> without treatment, it's more likely to move into a more serious infection. >> reporter: tough mudder telling abc news all necessary protocols were followed in preparation for and during the event and that it contacted all of the registered participants from the races to seek medical care if they developed any symptoms. now tough mudder is working with local investigators to find out where this contamination came from. guys? >> imagine having all of that fun and then getting sick in the end. >> this is why i don't run. in atlanta in about two weeks to enter his plea of not guilty. george? >> okay. thanks very much. demarco? >> now to a new study suggesting many of the health claims found on fish oil supplement labels may be misleading. abc news chief medical correspondent and america's favorite doctor, dr. jen joins us with more on this. break this down for us. >> demarco, the banner headline is this study is really about marketing claims, labeling, accuracy and potentially also our health literacy published in gama cardiology, they looked at 16 of the biggest manufacturers for fish oil supplements and the active ingredients. dha and epa. looked at over 2,800 actual supplement labels. and what they found was kind of surprising. they found the majority of these brands studied overstated their intended health benefits so they used labels like maintains this organ system or can support or prevent or treat certain

diseases or conditions, which is not allowed. they found only 9% contained the fda recommended daily dose for cardiovascular health, which is 2 grams. they underscored these supplements should not, i emphasize should not, be used as a primary preventive measure for cardiovascular disease. it is different if you have a health care provider who's diagnosed you with a health condition and recommends these supplements. 20% of older adults supplements on a daily basis. and many do so to prevent a certain condition. >> you have a master's in nutrition. now do we get the right amount of fish oil into our diets? >> well, demarco, ideally you get it from the whole food source. that means eating fish about twice a week like salmon, tuna or mackeral. you can all get these omega fatty 3 acids in chia seeds, fortified milk. this is a reminder, supplements could be widely inaccurate in

rebecca, where you work can make a big difference here. >> it really can. hello again, george. united states is one of seven countries without national paid family leave. there have been calls to change that for years but it hasn't happened yet. some businesses are now stepping up. when shala and ethan found out they were expecting, shala knew as a google employee that her company had a generous parental leave policy, but ethan would be the first person at his company to have a baby. >> we had to build a policy from scratch. >> reporter: ethan and his co-founder designed a policy that would incorporate ideas from google but would also make sense for their growing business. >> i was setting a precedent as the co-founder, being the first one to go through this process. >> reporter: ethan decided to take about a month off and then work part time for two months before fully returning. moving forward he's offering employees a fully paid flexible policy.

we're looking at younger people dealing with challenges usually associated with older adults. this morning we're talking about hip replacements. people under 45 nearly account for 6% of surgeries. will carr and i are both part of that fabulous statistic. good morning to you, will. >> reporter: good morning, lara. i'm not used to telling stories about myself, especially this story, this age. i'm still in my 30s. what i have learned along the way is we're all dealing with our own unique life challenges, regardless of age. the key for me has been finding community, purpose and flipping the narrative that i'm too young for this. it all started when i was stomping around in a blizzard. >> correspondent down. correspondent down. >> reporter: i thought i tore something in my left hip. when i got home, x-rays revealing moderate to severe osteoarthritis after a life time of adventure, from football, skiing. most of the cartilage in my left hip gone. i was told i needed a full hip replacement at the age of 38.

>> the average age for a hip replacement is 65. we're finding that average age is decreasing. patients are doing more and they want to stay active for longer so they are either injuring themselves or wearing out their joints through wear and tear. >> reporter: i was in a funk, but i kept working. this fire has made a turn overnight. but the pain was getting worse. it felt like multiple times a day that i had a huge steak knife jammed into my hip. sharp stabbing pains. so i went forward with the surgery. the great team at ucla told me to start walking immediately. today it feels like i got kicked by a horse. at times the struggle was real, getting in and out of bed especially difficult. i'm breathing like a just did a workout. using a cane, i was slowly getting stronger, relying on the encouragement of family and friends. >> say feel better, uncle will.

>> feel better uncle will. >> hope you feel better. >> reporter: and before i knew it, i tossed the cane to the side and started walking on my own. i was feeling better physically, but still battling the idea that something was wrong. the first thing that everybody would say is, you're too young for that. you're too young for that. i heard that 1,000 times. six months after surgery, i'm pain-free in my left hip and in my reporting, even bouncing around like a kid. couple weeks after my surgery, i was walking along with a cane and a stranger came up to me and told me that he burned his feet in a hire and was inning any but said if he could watch the sun set every night he could make it mentally into the next day. that has stuck with me. it still sticks with me. it's about purpose. no matter what you're going through, find that purpose and you'll find the drive to keep going. lara? >> yep.

we're going to look now at a new dinner trend, salad and a side of fries. rebecca jarvis back with that story we first saw in "the wall street journal." hey, rebecca. >> hi, george. yes. i couldn't go home before digging into this. i have been doing this for years. didn't know it was a thing. here we are salad and fries, the perfect combo, or is it? take a look. the side dish shake-up taking dishes by storm. diners doing dinner a little differently, ditching traditional entrees in favor of salads with a side of fries. >> i mean, who doesn't like french fries? french fries go with everything. people love caesar salads. it's just a great meal.
