8:16 am
>> it affects about 1 in 4 kids before they turn 18. and just to put it in perspective, asthma affects about 1 in 10 children before they turn 18. >> but there is some really encouraging news. >> we've learned so much about how to effectively treat psychiatric illness and childhood that most of the time we can cure it. we could put psychiatric illness fully into remission and be done with it. not you don't need chronic therapy or chronic medication about three out of four times my mouth dropped three out of four times. >> that's incredible. there is a problem, though. >> unfortunately, the reality is not the same as that, because about 1 in 5 children with a psychiatric illness are seen by a mental health professional. so 80% never see a mental health professional in the us. >> the ohana program has been up and running for about five years now, but is getting a new home thanks to a generous gift of more than $100 million from philanthropist roberta buffett.
8:17 am
elliott the gift means ohana can do more. in addition to traditional outpatient treatment, there's a day program after school program and weeks long residential treatment for kids with significant mood and anxiety disorders. >> that program is pretty rare. so i suspect that families from the bay area who may have outpatient treatment there will call us if they're there. clinicians feel they may need a higher level of care, care that is vital for kids who need it. >> amadeo daetz, abc7 news. >> the grand opening ceremony for ohana's new campus is on september 27th and we put together a list of resources for anyone dealing with mental health issues. you can find it by going to abc7 news.com slash take action and the suicide and crisis lifeline can be reached by dialing 9188. well, happening tomorrow you could join a movement to prevent overdose deaths by getting trained to use narcan. one mom is on a mission
8:18 am
to educate others about the dangers of fentanyl, and she is teaming up with public health departments across the bay area , training hundreds of people to use narcan. it is a brand name of the nasal spray naloxone, a life saving drug capable of reversing an opioid overdose. >> my son, trevor died in his dorm room at sonoma state after taking one fentanyl laced m-30 pill. from the night that we found out that he died, we said, my husband and i said, we have to be loud about this and if you want to go, it is from noon to one at their san francisco store in laurel heights. >> that's three, five, four, five california street in the south bay. santa clara will be welcoming the queen herself, beyonce, to levi's stadium for her renaissance world tour next wednesday. the hype is real. i know a lot of people are excited about this. so we spoke with mayor lisa gillmor about what to expect when she arrives.
8:19 am
>> we have something very special planned and i'm going to make her honorary mayor for the day that she's going to be performing in santa clara. and our city is preparing a big key to the city to present her to memorialize her visit here, to santa clara to show her how much we honor and respect her and are excited to have her here. >> mayor gilmore plaza decked, decorate her gavel just in case beyonce happens to show up to the council meeting to take over as honorary mayor. so the concert is wednesday at 8 p.m. and i definitely want to see that gavel. i think it's going to have some rhinestone tone, some bling for sure, for beyonce and lisa, you know, so many people are going to be going to that concert. how is the weather going to be for the concert? >> well, believe it or not, that's the hottest day of the week, wednesday. so even though it's at 8:00, it's going to be in the upper 80s to near 90. so temperatures early in the afternoon, that's about 430. and
8:20 am
then they'll be dropping off throughout the evening. but still, with all those people, it will still be warmer than the actual air temperature, which will be in the upper 60s, late in the evening. so live doppler seven picking up on the low clouds and fog off the coast. high pressure slowly building in over the weekend, giving us a few more degrees of warming. a bit above average inland, but typical summertime spread here and look at mt. tam where numbers are from the upper 50s to the low 60s. so more in line with what we would expect in the early morning hours, getting rid of all that humidity from last week, 59, downtown, 60 in oakland, 65 in san jose and there is the shark tank where it is all cloudy out there, 80 return today, upper 50s with some haze and also the fog from santa rosa to napa, 58 there and 61 in concord. so it has been clear this morning in our inland valleys. so without that blanket of low clouds, as much as five degrees cooler for you in livermore and about 2 to 3
8:21 am
degrees cooler elsewhere. sunny shot of walnut creek right now partly cloudy looking at mostly cloudy for the rest of us throughout the next hour or so. and then with some haze we will be enjoying mostly sunny conditions, slightly warmer heat building, more significant early next week. so air quality will be moderate as we are looking at a wind shift, the fog pulls back and we're underneath mostly sunny skies. even at the coast here. and then tonight, as the fog pushes in, shouldn't be as far in our inland valleys. so we'll look for another nice afternoon. so once again, good weather for the weekends. the hottest weather climbing in the temperatures, climbing with each and every day into the workweek . next week, 76 for oakland, 80 in fremont. numbers in the upper 80s. so coming up, a few degrees in the north bay there with 92 in antioch. santa cruz cloudy now 80 later and in the south bay silicon valley pride for tomorrow with temperatures pretty nice on the mild side. 65 with sunshine noontime we're in
8:22 am
the upper 70s mid 80s by about 3:00. and then looking at those 70s by 6:00. so a really nice looking weekend today, tomorrow, monday, just a few degrees of warming, but it's tuesday and wednesday. if you don't like the heat, maybe have a plan because we're certainly warming through the 90s inland triple digits wednesday say bayshore warming as well but the beaches should be really nice. i think i'll be coming to your house. gloria should be a nice week ahead and i love that sunshine in the warm weather. >> well, thank you, lisa. just ahead, giving a voice back to the voiceless. >> how do you feel how bay area researchers are giving people with als another chance to speak to their loved ones. >> some people are born to hustle. they just know their way around a good deal. that's why we hired them all at marshalls. our buyers hustle every day for the brands you love. they can

8:25 am
brain waves to give people with als the ability to communicate again. abc7 news south bay reporter dustin dorsey shows us the technology. >> mm hmm. mm hmm. >> how do you feel? >> judging by the smile on pat bennett's face, i'd say she's feeling pretty good. that's because for the first time since developing als, she is able to communicate once again this miracle. thanks to incredible new research on stanford university's campus. >> our aim is to restore communication by reading out brain signals using computer algorithms or computer software to interpret those brain signals, and then changing them into actions in the outside world. >> a need for bennett, who was a human resources director and equestrian before her 2021 als diagnosis that caused deterioration in her brain stem als attacks. neurons controlling movement causing physical weakness and eventual paralysis. she can make sounds, but bennett's als led to the loss of
8:26 am
use of the muscles of her lips, tongue, larynx and jaws. muscles needed to communicate clearly. >> it's depressing to in 2022, stanford medicine professor of neurosurgery, dr. jamie henderson. >> implanted sensors about the size of popcorn kernels in bennett's cerebral cortex in her brain. these sensors communicate with the hundreds of brain cells where speech production occurs using her brainwaves. the sensors detect words that she wants to say and the pedestals that you see on her head relay those brainwaves to the screen to develop the words and phrases. i like music. this allows bennett to communicate without being able to form the words physically as pat looks at a computer screen, a sentence would appear where she would attempt to read that sentence. >> we would read out the brain signals to translate them using a machine, learning algorithm into text, which then gets placed back onto the screen. >> in this case, practice makes perfect. >> bennett has participated in 25 training sessions, and with time she has developed the
8:27 am
ability to communicate around 60 words a minute. being able to speak again is life changing for her. >> oh, i have hope, dr. henderson says. >> this is just a proof of concept, but he hopes in the next 5 to 10 years, systems can be in place to give more people their voice back again. people with communication disorders can sometimes become withdrawn, become less socially active, and this could allow people to get back into social situations. >> so it could it could potentially be transformative in the south bay. >> dustin dorsey, abc7 news. >> that is amazing. well, still to come on abc mornings, the south bay's grand finale to its pride weekend. what to expect starting today and how san jose business owners hope to see more dollar signs. and the latest on donald trump after he surrendered in the georgia election case. >> this is abc 724
