go places player of the day and how cool is this legendary hip hop artist, entertainer sean diddy combs donating $1 million to the jackson state university athletic department during their season opener today, diddy attended howard university, later earned an honorary doctorate degree, said if it wasn't for hbcus, he would not be here. remember, stephen curry helped start and fund the howard university golf program, which is thriving on both the men's and women's team. jackson state must have been motivated by diddy in that million bucks because as you watched right here on abc seven, they took care of south carolina state in blowout fashion. diddy is our toyota player of the game, toyota. let's go places. we're just 15 days now from the 49 ers regular season opener in pittsburgh. and yesterday, the 49 ers solidified their quarterback room to three, trading former number three overall pick trey lance to dallas for a fourth round pick. and we all know the story. by now, the 49 ers traded a haul of picks to move up in the 2021 draft to take lance, who is set
8:02 pm
to be the next face of the franchise for san francisco. but after years of injuries and just really inconsistent play not getting on the field, yesterday's preseason finale, both head coach kyle shanahan and john lynch reflected on trey's short time in red and gold. >> i always feel like i let trey down. i mean, i wanted him to come here. i believe in trey. i believed in him before we took him, and i'm responsible for that. i didn't want to throw him into the heat of battle right away, but i thought he needed to play. so we tried to figure out every way to do that. i mean, if i can look back in hindsight, i wish i didn't put him in a play that had him break his finger because i think that really hurt him in his first year. and not only did it hurt him not getting able to mix in much, but it hurt him in the practice time because he had to adjust how he threw and things like that, which i think set him back for a second year. when we went into the second year, we gave him every chance to do it. we were going to make an offense that to me gave him the best chance to be successful at that time, which we did do. and when you do that,
8:03 pm
you hope a guy can stay healthy so he can stay out there long enough. but that didn't last long. it was the first game. and but sometimes things just don't work out. >> i still very much have belief that he's going to become a player for now. it's just not going to be for us. and we take full accountability for that. and you know, and in some way, yeah, we got lucky. on brock, but sure, that's setback our team. it would have been nice to have those picks and all that, you know. so we do own that and fortunately we still have a really good football team that i think has got his, you know, a legitimate shot. we're focused on game one, but we have a championship level roster now. it's what we make of it. >> got to get nick bosa signed real soon as well as for the game last night, starting quarterback brock purdy backup sam darnold both played well. most importantly, as we know with niners, quarterbacks got out of the game healthy. purdy played two drives, 73 yards, passing in one rushing touchdown for qb one. how about qb two darnold, a couple of big plays nice throw right here to chris conley at 34 yard first down pitch and catch and then you like to see this in the red zone
