officials joined alameda county district attorney pamela price during her community meeting series. abc seven news reporter anwser hassan explains how they took on the problem of the city's rising crime rate. >> sitting center stage. alameda county district attorney pamela price. i'm not only the first black woman to sit in this seat, i'm the first foster kid to sit in this seat. this was another in a series of community forums. this time focused specifically on public safety in oakland. she was joined by representatives from the mayor's office and the police department. >> we do know that gang and group shootings still represent the majority of the crime in the city of oakland. rising crime and how to deal with it was the big topic. >> da price spent time explaining how her office has response, adding, we've charged over 7600 cases, including murder and serious violent felonies. then came the questions. >> i think one of the biggest problems with all the people complaining about the crime and

charges about enhancements at da price spoke of how her office is prosecuting cases and the reforms she was elected to implement as she explained, enhancements don't deter crime and are racially biased. >> enhancements force us to invest in prisons and it's absolutely essential that we stop using them. >> most understand that da price is new to the office and her efforts will take time. but some are still convinced that this approach won't work. were you satisfied with what you were hearing today? >> no, i wasn't. if you're dealing with a person that they deal in fear and intimid ation, you can't meet them with compassion. you have to deal with them with fear and retaliation. >> the discussion also focused on improving educational opportunities and providing better paying jobs for young people, both which can serve as deterrents to crime. rachel grissom says she hopes all the changes being discussed will start to show in the future. it was important just so that there's no speculation so that

da price could hear directly from the members of this community how we feel about what's happening in oakland in oakland, unterhausen, abc seven news. >> new at 11. take a look at this. a large tree toppled over tonight in san francisco. this is near the intersection of pacific and sansome street. fortunately, it appears it did not land on any one or any vehicles, but it did make quite a mess. you see the clean up there? it's unclear how or why the tree fell, but witnesses tell me it was a bit windy and cool today at times in the city. now to the latest on the maui wildfires, where they are still searching for victims. more than 380 people remain missing, all of them from the lahaina area. cell phone data is being used to try to pinpoint where victims have last been. the wildfire is blamed for at least 115 deaths, but that number is expected to rise. maui county officials are suing hawaiian electric,

claiming the power company failed to de-energize power lines despite high winds and wildfire warnings. the cause of the fires is still unknown. the fire is in lahaina and kula destroyed more than 2200 structures, causing an estimated $5.5 billion in damage. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard spoke with a north bay woman who is helping wildfire survivor rebuild their lives. >> i tend to see the challenges as i tend to see the heartache. >> annie barber is on the ground in maui helping wildfire survivors move forward with their insurance claims, which can be overwhelming. >> the people are traumatized and they have what i call fire brain, their brains fuzzy. they can only navigate so much. and i see a lot of fear. >> that fear is something annie knows about all too well. >> immediate bond. they know that. i understand. >> she lost her family's home in

santa rosa's coffey park during the 2017 tubbs fire, which burned thousands of homes and killed two dozen people. this was annie's home before and after, reduced to rubble. >> that's something that doesn't go away. it's a grief that you have to navigate it. >> annie works for united policy holders, a san francisco based nonprofit helping homeowners get the insurance resources they need. besides assisting with paperwork and overcoming red tape, she's also there to listen. >> my heart is with them. i relate to them and i try to just give them the best advice that i can. this is just crazy. >> i can't even it's just too much. i've lost friends and i've just i've been here 48 years and i've never seen anything like this in my entire life. >> i'm not going to get the number exactly right. it's either 36 or 38 times that a survivor has to tell their story before they can even begin to

heal. >> annie has also helped survivor of the 2018 camp fire in paradise, one of the most destructive in california history. today, this is her rebuilt home in coffey park, post-fire annie hopes to bring the same closure to the people of maui. >> there's challenges in all these communities and we have to figure out how we help them navigate that in the north bay. >> cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> we wish them the best. in the north bay. an effort is heating up to remove illegally anchored boats from richardson bay. according to the marin independent journal, county supervisors approved a contract for over $300,000 to bring an outreach caseworker to those living on the boats. this caseworker will try to get them to move off the boats in exchange for a one year federal housing voucher from the marin housing authority. despite local laws, many have lived illegally on their boats for decades and today there are about 50 of them

left. and in the east bay, the concord naval weapons station project is moving forward now. now with a new master developer , brookfield properties was selected by the city council today. this is the third attempt at hiring a developer for the 5000 acre site. the reuse plan would take on 2300 acres, roughly half the site, to create a huge mixed use and transit oriented community. it's been abandoned since 1999, and now it's the latest development currently underway in the bay area. the south bay is showing its pride this weekend, kicking it off saturday evening with the silicon valley pride festival in san jose, followed by the pride parade sunday morning. as abc seven news reporter tara campbell reports, this year's event is all about living out proud. >> the party is getting started in san jose silicon valley pride

kicking off with a night festival saturday. what's the time where we're able to really just live out loud and be whoever we want to be and not be questioned or have weird looks at us living out loud and living out proud. the theme of this year's pride living out proud is as a great way to celebrate pride. >> it takes us back to the roots of pride. >> nicole altamirano is the ceo of silicon valley pride and says living out proud is as important as ever. >> we're seeing the legislation that is sweeping across the nation, trying to take us back in time. >> i mean, obviously with like everything that's going on in the world, we need to make sure that we're like together and strong and showing up. >> the aclu is currently tracking nearly 500 bills taking aim at lgbt plus rights, many aimed at the transgender community coming out and being in community gives strength to some of those, especially transgender folks these days that feel so isolated. thousands of people are expected to show up for this year's pride

festivities, many of them allies . >> i have a queer kid myself and so volunteering and supporting and being an advocate for the queer community is just super important to me. >> it's a community that unfortunately doesn't receive the unconditional support and so i really think we have to be there for these people on their journeys. >> kacey chung is a high school student in san jose and says she's here to have fun and show her support at it shows how tight knit of a community we are and it shows that we're not going to back down. >> and we have a lot of resilience. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> wells fargo is paying out millions of dollars over accusations it overcharged thousands of customers for advisory fees. the san francisco bank agreed to pay a $35 million penalty to settle with the government and did not admit any wrongdoing. according to securities and exchange commission's. the bank also paid about $40 million to reimburse customer fees. this is just the

latest in a string of troubles for wells fargo, including a federal fine last year and technical glitches. rite aid is preparing to file for bankruptcy because of pending lawsuits over opioids. according to a report by the wall street journal. the drugstore chain has not yet agreed to a settlement with the numerous plaintiffs and is dealing with a lawsuit from the justice department as well. it has asked that that suit be dismissed. rite aid has not commented on this report, but it seems a doom and loop tour scheduled for san francisco or in san francisco today. may was a bust. abc seven news was at civic center plaza, where a so called doom loop walking tour was scheduled to be held today to quote, point out all the worst of san francisco. it was promoted to go through mid-market. the tenderloin and union square. it's unclear who organized the tour, but contact information online indicated it was sold out. instead, we found

florida, before the gunman took his own life. investigators say the man left behind several hate filled manifesto, is on a family computer. abc news reporter chuck sivertsen has the latest on this developing story from investigators working the case. >> a massive police response in jacksonville, florida, as a gunman opened fire inside a dollar general store. >> the jacksonville has suffered the loss of three precious lives at the hands of an active shooter. >> police are not identifying the shooter, but say he's a white male in his 20s and lived in neighboring clay county. they say he entered the dollar store with an ar style rifle and a handgun. he then allegedly shot and killed three people before turning the gun on himself. all three victims were black. two men and one woman. they also have not yet been identified. authorities say the alleged shooter texted his father early saturday afternoon, telling him to check his computer, his family, then called the clay county sheriff's office after finding writings allegedly by the suspect. >> portions of these manifestos detailed the shooter's

>> a large refugee community in the east bay is learning about resource forces that can help them live fuller lives. abc7 news was in union city this afternoon where congressman eric swalwell hosted a resource fair. many of those who attended were afghan refugee swease concerned with assisting family members back home. >> we've got the largest afghan american population in the whole country. in fact, fremont is home to little kabul. the story in the kite runner from kabul to fremont is one that people all over the world know. and this community is hurting after the afghan evacuation in back in 2021. and they want to know what are we doing to get their family members over here, especially those who served alongside the us military? >> swalwell says the event was about establishing trust with the refugee community and keeping promises made to afghan citizens who helped the us military during the war. there palo alto is celebrating its

right now are in the 50s and 60s. check out brentwood. it is still 73 degrees right now. san francisco, 55. novato one of the cooler spots at rather san francisco 58 novato cooler at 55 degrees and this time from mount tam. we're seeing that marine layer come in to the bay and overnight it will spill into the bay into parts of the east bay. but then it will clear out later on throughout the day. so so low clouds overnight, hazy, slightly warmer tomorrow and then even warmer as the heat really builds, especially for inland areas early next week all the way through wednesday. so here's a forecast animation. we see the clouds pull in during the morning hours. and then by the afternoon we'll see some clouds just off the coast. plenty of sunshine everywhere else. the marine layer moves in. and then overnight into monday. then monday afternoon in even more sunshine and warmer weather highs. tomorrow will range. so at the beaches where we have

that sea breeze only 66 in half moon bay, san francisco, though, pretty comfortable at 73. it's going to be really gorgeous. san jose 83 and then getting pretty hot warm inland where some areas like fairfield will be one of our warmest spots at 94 degrees. santa rosa, 91. and we've got that hazy sunshine and then tomorrow morning, the lows will drop into the 50s and also some low 60s with that limit and cloud cover spilling into the bay and parts of the east bay. so here's a look ahead as we jump into monday. that's where temperatures climb a little bit more. here's one of the models showing mid 90s for some of our inland areas like calistoga, fairfield and even 97 tuesday, we come up even into the upper 90s for a few spots and then check out wednesday, triple digits, possibly in fairfield and antioch and we'll see mid 90s santa rosa, sonoma and napa. so it is really going to heat up

the availability of things like narcan. >> we continue to see an all time high overdoses throughout the country. and we think our big news is we have something that we think will help address this public health crisis. >> born out of san jose based investment firm altamont pharmaceutical holdings says ovation therapeutics has developed a new monoclonal antibody therapy. the fda has authorized a human clinical trial of the rd 1004 injection that provides no high and prevents any type of overdose, whether it's injected intravenously or snorted through the nose or even taken orally. >> once it gets to the bloodstream, this antibody is going to grab it with high affinity and prevent it from from inducing its harmful effects in the brain. >> unlike narcan that's given by someone else after an overdose, the antibody would be given by a doctor before someone uses fentanyl and has shown 30 days of overdose prevention in non human testing. the hope is that this would be another tool in the fight against fentanyl deaths. >> we're trying to get to people high risk individuals before
