a san francisco classic shuttered today is the last day for nordstrom's flagship store on market street. >> good morning. it's sunday, august 27th. i'm stephanie sierra and we'll get to our top story in just a moment. but first, we begin with the weather . and lisa's here to share a warm day ahead. >> yeah, warmer inland. it's been slow. we've got high pressure that is going to build the next several days. so you may not have noticed anything much yesterday except for a little haze out there and a pleasant afternoon this morning . check it out. 48. novato, 60 in oakland. so certainly the number is cooling off despite that 60 degree ocean temperature . as we get more wind off the coast, we'll clear out the air and we'll get a better recovery at night for better sleeping weather. but 11 degrees colder in novato, five degrees cooler in livermore. so we still are looking at a bit of haze from the fires to the north today. tomorrow things improve somewhat and a two day loop shows that we're still under the blue. the green there that indicates that

smoke aloft above 20,000ft. so plan on a warmer day inland. elsewhere 6070s upper 70s around the bay, upper 80s inland. >> stephanie lisa thank you. happening today the flag ship nordstrom in downtown san francisco is closing for good. the store has operated in the westfield san francisco center for more than two decades. as one nordstrom employee told us, the number of people coming into the mall is way down, which reflects the latest city data showing declining business sales tax revenue for soma, where the mall is located, has seen a 25% drop. when you compare the first quarter of 2019 to 2023. mayor london breed talked about her vision of replacing the mall with a soccer stadium. >> well, it's not just a plan for a soccer stadium. it's showing people what is possible, that we start to we're starting to think about what is downtown in light of the challenges around retail. so not only could there be a soccer stadium that could be transformative, meaning

soccer matches fifa and a soccer tournament, but concerts. >> the mayor's office says it's working on changing laws and reforming taxes to bring more businesses to the area. also in san francisco, we're learning new details on a stabbing that happened overnight in golden gate park police say it happened around 930 last night on john f kennedy drive. now, according to investigators, when they arrived to the scene, two teenagers were stabbed and taken to the hospital. we're told both are expected to be okay. the investigation is currently ongoing. anyone with information is asked to call sfpd. and take a look at this. a large tree topples over in san francisco. so there are thankfully no reports the tree landed on anyone or anyone's cars. but as you can see, crews spent the night cleaning up this mess. but it's unclear how or why this tree fell. it's right near the intersection of pacific and sansome street. glad nobody was hurt. well, the latest now on a

crash that killed three us marines overnight. it happened in australia where 23 marines were on board the osprey aircraft for a military exercise when it crashed. five others were taken to the hospital and are currently in serious condition. one of them is in surgery in june last year, a crash involving the same aircraft killed five marines in glamis, california. australian defense forces are assisting us personnel and the cause of the crash is being investigated. and in the east bay oakland residents are fed up with street crimes and this weekend, some people got a chance to speak directly with alameda county district attorney pamela price about the changes they want to see. abc's seven news reporter answer hassan has the story. >> sitting center stage. alameda county district attorney pamela price. i'm not only the first black woman to sit in this seat, i'm the first foster kid to sit in this seat. this was another in a series of community forums. this time focused specifically on public safety in oakland. she

was joined by representatives from the mayor's office and the police department. we do know that gang and group shootings still represent the majority of the crime in the city of oakland. >> rising crime and how to deal with it was the big topic. >> da price spent time explaining how her office has respond. >> thing we've charged over 7600 cases, including murder and serious violent felonies. then came the questions. >> i think one of the biggest problems was all the people complaining about the crime and charges about enhancements. >> da price spoke of how her office is prosecuting cases and the reforms she was elected to implement as she explained, enhancements don't deter crime and are racially biased. >> enhancements for us to invest in prisons, and it's absolutely essential that we stop using them most understand that da price is new to the office and her efforts will take time. >> but some are still convinced this approach won't work. were you satisfied with what you were

hearing today? >> no, i wasn't. if you're dealing with a person that they deal in fear and intimidation, you can't meet them with compassion. you have to deal with them with fear and retaliation. >> the discussion also focused on improving educational opportunities and providing better paying jobs for young people, both which can serve as deterrents to crime. rachel grissom says she hopes all the changes being discussed will start to show in the future. it was important just so that there's no speculation so that da price could hear directly from the members of this community how we feel about what's happening in oakland. in oakland. answer hassan, abc seven news. well happening right now, we're tracking several closures on bay area highways due to two deadly crashes overnight. >> this was the scene on the peninsula where a deadly rollover crash has the 280 southbound lanes closed. drivers are being diverted to eastbound 92. and here is the 101. in san

francisco where you can see traffic is at a standstill going north in the portola due to a fatal crash. right now, two lanes are reportedly open near the silver avenue exit, but of course, expect delays in this area due. developing news now, evacuations are slowly being lifted around the island of maui as firefighters make progress battling those wildfires. the situation is something one north bay woman knows all too well. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with her about how she is helping wildfire survivors rebuild their lives. >> i tend to see the challenges . i tend to see the heartache. annie barber is on the ground in maui helping wildfire survivor move forward with their insurance claims, which can be overwhelming. the people are traumatized and they have what i call fire brain, their brains fuzzy. they can only navigate so much. and i see a lot of fear. >> that fear is something annie knows about all too well.

>> immediate bond. they know that i understand. >> she lost her family's home in santa rosa's coffey park during the 2017 tubbs fire, which burned thousands of homes and killed two dozen people. this was annie's home before and after, reduced to rubble. >> that's something that doesn't go away. it's in it's a grief that you have to navigate. >> annie works for united policyholders, a san francisco based nonprofit helping homeowners get the insurance resource they need. besides assisting with paperwork and overcoming red tape, she's also there to listen. >> my heart is with them. i relate to them, and i try to just give them the best advice that i can. this is just crazy. >> i can't even it's just too much. i've lost friends and i've just i've been here 48 years and i've never seen anything like this in my entire life. >> i'm not going to get the

number exactly right. it's either 36 or 38 times that a survivor has to tell their story before they can even begin to heal. >> annie is also helped survivors of the 2018 camp fire in paradise. one of the most destructive in california history. today. this is her rebuilt home in coffey park, post-fire annie hopes to bring the same closure to the people of maui. >> there's challenges in all these communities and we have to figure out how we help them navigate that in the north bay. >> cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> also in the north bay, dozens of people who live on boats on richardson bay will soon have to figure out a new housing plan. despite local laws. the county says many have lived on their boats illegally for decades. according to the marin independent journal, county supervisors approved a contract to bring an outreach caseworker into the picture. the caseworker will try to get people to move off the boats in exchange for a one year federal housing voucher from the marin housing authority . the process will cost over

$300,000. well, the south bay is showing its pride this weekend. today it concludes its pride week with a parade in san jose following a festival that happened on saturday. if youplat starts at 1030 at julian and market streetsn san jose. and as abc seven news reporter ta campbell reports, this year's event is all about living out proud. >> the party is getting started in san jose. silicon valley pride kicking off with a night festival saturday. what's the time where we're able to really just live out loud and be whoever we want to be and not be questioned or have weird looks at us living out loud and living out proud. the theme of this year's pride and living out proud is a great way to celebrate pride. >> it takes us back to the roots of pride. >> nicole altamirano is the ceo of silicon valley pride and says living out proud is as important as ever. >> we're seeing the legislation that is sweeping across the

nation trying to take us back in time. i mean, obviously with like everything that's going on in the world, we need to make sure that we're like together and strong and showing up. >> the aclu is currently tracking nearly 500 bills taking aim at lgbtq plus rights. many aimed at the transgender community coming out and being in community gives strength to some of those, especially transgender folks. >> these days that feel so isolated. >> and thousands of people are expected to show up for this year's pride festivities. many of them allies. i have a queer kid myself, and so volunteering and supporting and being an advocate for the queer community is just super important to me. >> it's a community that unfortunately really doesn't receive unconditional support. and so i really think we have to be there for these people on their journeys. casey chung is a high school student in san jose and says she's here to have fun and show her support. it shows how tight knit of a community we

one woman. the fbi says it's investigating hate crimes are always and will always remain a top priority for the fbi because they are not only attack on a victim, they are also meant to threaten and intimidate an entire community. jacksonville mayor donna deegan visited the scene shortly after the attack. >> well, i'm heartbroken, obviously. we must do everything that we can in to dissuade this type of hate. >> according to investigators, the suspect sent his father a text message early saturday afternoon saying to check his computer, his family then called the clay county sheriff's office after finding writings allegedly by the suspect. >> portions of these manifesto detailed the shooter's disgusting ideology of hate. plainly put, this shooting was racially motivated and he hated black people. >> jacksonville now in mourning. >> the people in this community, they're hurting. and they have every right to, you know, this

this makes no sense. i am very, very angry right now. you know, we got kids in this community. seeing all of this and this is unnecessary. >> chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. >> in the east bay, a refugee community is learning more about resources, is aiming to help them live fuller lives. congressman eric swalwell hosted a resource fair in union city. many of those who attended were afghan refugees concerned about helping family members back home . >> we've got the largest afghan american population in the whole country. in fact, fremont is home to little kabul. the story in the kite runner from kabul to fremont is one that people all over the world know, and this community is hurting after the afghan evacuation back in 2021. and they want to know what are we doing to get their family members over here, especially those who served alongside the us military? >> swalwell says the event is meant to establish trust with

refugees and keep promises made to afghan citizens who help the us military during the war. the concord naval weapons station project is moving forward now with a new master developer. brookfield properties was selected by the city council saturday. this is the third attempt at hiring a developer for the 5000 acre site. the reuse plan would take on 2300 acres, roughly half the site to create a mixed use and transit oriented community. it's been abandoned since 1999. now it's the largest development currently underway in the bay area. well, today, palo alto continues its celebration for the 40th annual festival of the arts. the event features a wide variety of exhibits and attractions along university avenue. over 250 artists are expected to have their work on display from unique and one of a kind art pieces to wearable art. this beloved festival has something for everyone, including an italian street painting expo along with gourmet

stronger winds that helps clear out the atmosphere a little bit, but certainly a lot of fires still burning to the north of us . mile visibility, santa rosa. elsewhere, you can see beautiful view here. this is the view from mount tam where it is 58 degrees downtown, 60 in oakland, 61 mountain view in san jose with palo alto right now, 54. and this is pretty overexposed. san jose right now 55 up in santa rosa with 56 by the delta. so temperatures finally feeling comfortable. not a lot of moisture or humidity in the air . in fact, we are rid of that. and as we look at this view, you can see that the marine layer, it's here, but a nice clear sky above so low clouds and fog this morning, hazy and slightly warmer today, looking at the heat building slowly. so it's been pretty nice. temperatures around average or a few degrees below. and then looking at the numbers coming up as we get into next week. so mid 90s for your monday for the warmest locations through low 90s santa rosa,

upper 70s for hayward with 60 and 70s from the city there back towards the coast. so pretty pleasant. it's tuesday where you'll begin to feel the big difference there and into wednesday with 90s arriving mid seconds up in the north bay, some upper 90s inland and still not too bad around the bay shore . but when you get into those 80s, it's starting to feel a little warm right around hayward and fremont with 84 arriving perhaps midweek on wednesday, so upper 70s could see stinson beach warming to about 80 degrees, but still pretty comfortable even though the coast is expected to warm up. so low clouds and fog pulling back temporarily today. mid 60s half moon bay. it's been kind of gray, but we've gotten a little sun here and there. upper 70s from the peninsula down throughout palo alto and san jose getting a little bit warmer. 94 in fairfield and looking at san jose today for the valley pride, silicon valley pride mid 60s at 9:00 and hopefully getting into some sunshine there upper 70s by

the positive aspects of the area. >> there's so much more in this neighborhood, and we want to show i want to show that people live in this neighborhood. people who have worked all of their lives live in this neighborhood. there are children. it's a community that's very diverse and there's a lot of care and loving that. we really are a neighborhood and a community that's nice to see that positive energy. >> the tour guide lives in the tenderloin and went through substance abuse recovery in the past. she's thankful for the community opening its arms to her. well later today, the san francisco department of public health will join businesses to raise awareness about overdose prevention. it's happening at noon. and the standard five and ten ace hardware on california street. it's in advance of national overdose awareness day, which is on thursday. this week . this comes as drug maker funded by a south bay company, is about to begin human testing on a first of its kind treatment

for fentanyl overdoses. the treatment would be administered before the drug is taken. abc seven news reporter dustin dorsey explains why it could be a game changer in the epidemic. >> a sobering dose of reality. fentanyl remains the leading cause of death for people ages 18 to 45 and the cause of 90% of overdose fatalities. experts say more options are needed to prevent loss of life, despite the availability of things like narcan. >> we continue to see an all time high in overdoses throughout the country. and we think our big news is we have something that we think will help address this public health crisis. >> born out of san jose based investment firm altamont pharmaceutical holdings, cessation therapeutics has developed a new monoclonal antibody therapy the fda has authorized a human clinical trial of the 61004 injection that provides no high and prevents any type of overdose, whether it's injected intravenously or snorted through the nose or even taken orally.

>> one dose it gets to the bloodstream. this antibody is going to grab it with high affinity and prevent it from from inducing its harmful effects in the brain. >> unlike narcan that's given by someone else after an overdose, the antibody would be given by a doctor before someone uses fentanyl and has shown 30 days of overdose prevention in non human testing. the hope is that this would be another tool in the fight against fentanyl deaths. >> we're trying to get to people, high risk individuals before they experience an overdose and provide a protective mechanism in the form of this antibody. so fentanyl is rendered ineffective. >> the santa clara county fentanyl working group's doctor, rachel sussman, says there are other pre overdose treatments for opioids like vivitrol and more study needs to be done before csx 1004 receives full fda approval. but she says this could be helpful. >> we do have several tools already and i think that one of our challenges is making sure that those existing tools are not underused. but another tool would never hurt and absolutely, i think the more are the more

ashley. >> and it almost seemed like we opened the door and stepped into their living room. they're right there, right there on the ocean floor of the monterey bay national marine sanctuary. >> thousands of octopus moms protecting their newly laid eggs . and the incredible images you're seeing are helping to unravel a mystery of this real life octopuses garden. one of the few known nesting grounds of its kind anywhere in the world. it's the work of a research group that includes san jose state university, moss landing marine laboratory and the monterey bay aquarium research institute, also known as mbari. >> this is one of the robotic arms. >> jim barry is senior scientist . he showed us the type of submersible vehicles used to monitor the site since it was first discovered in 2018 near an extinct sea volcano about 80 leoff the coast of monterey . and since that time, researchers have also turned to increasingly sophistic instruments to learn more. >> one is that we've had advances in technology and imaging for deep sea systems.

you know, we're two miles under the surface, cold, dark, freezing high pressure, and yet we're able to run these cameras and get great shots of these octopus sitting there. yeah, it's pretty remarkable. >> and since the discovery, san jose state assistant professor amanda khan and her colleagues have worked to understand why the octopuses migrate to the area, to mate and eventually birth their young, she says one clue was the water temperature. >> we saw that the water was shimmering and wavering in a way kind of like you would see heat rising off the asphalt on a hot day. and that made us think that maybe there was something about the water conditions there using sophisticated thermometer ears, they confirmed their hunch water in the vents was indeed warmer. >> part of an environment that allows the octopus eggs to incubate and hatch more quickly and likely avoid predators as they grow. professor khan believes the newly published discovery will highlight the critical role of preserving the marine sanctuary. >> you know, for a species that

with a nice light breeze in the afternoon. soon. so low clouds and fog pulling back for a sunny day. it should be really nice all around the bay area. we do have the gray sky to start out except inland hasn't made it totally inland. so it's hovering maybe 1900 feet. as we look at the visibility or i should say air quality mixture of good and moderate, but we'll still be in that moderate advisory criteria today due to the haze in that wildfire smoke. a northwest wind pulling down some of the smoke or actually it's a loft 20 to 30,000ft, zero visibility there in novato with three miles. santa rosa, what have you here very pretty. the low clouds the fog from mt. tam and is 58 downtown 57 palo alto half moon bay with 60. oakland 61 mountain view. san jose. and right here a lot of cloud cover but we should get into some sunshine and 70s downtown santa rosa and novato. you saw the fog low to mid 50s there with 58 in concord, 56 in

livermore and a look from vollmer peak, mt. diablo there. so pretty view this morning. the sun up at 635 and setting before 8:00. so low clouds and fog this morning hazy slightly warmer really confined to our inland valleys. and then as high pressure continues to build, we'll get our warmest days tuesday and wednesday. so our inland valleys, upper 80s is what you had yesterday. that's the average in today, maybe about 90 degrees. could be a couple of degrees warmer than average. and then into monday, we'll continue to see some warmth there. it's wednesday when you get the peak warmth, not only in livermore, but all around the bay area. and by friday, saturday into the labor day weekend, we are much cooler. so if you have plans, keep that in mind. the warmest days coming in the middle of the week. 83 santa clara near average in san jose. low 90s in gilroy, morgan hill on the peninsula here. upper 70s from san mateo, 78in los altos. so a nice day. palo alto for you getting into the
