. but good morning. it's sunday , august 27th. i'm stephanie sierra and we'll get to that story in just a moment. but first, we begin with the weather . and lisa is here with a warm day ahead. >> yeah, it's already brightening up. in fact, the fog is clearing around the bay area. we start with our visible picture and you can see the fog right around the bay there. but it's been sunny in our inland valleys. we skipped to the air quality here where you may notice the haze it's been with us the past couple of days. so we do have an advisory for moderate air quality throughout the entire bay area today. and without the wind in the early morning hours, we do get the pollutants gathering to the ground in the morning hours. so we'll have that today, tomorrow. this is a two day loop. but if we look outside right now from emeryville, it looks pretty nice , doesn't it? 57, downtown, 63 in mountain view and san jose and the shark tank. sunny out there. temperatures in the north bay are cooler at 56, low 60 soquel's to mid 60s inland. and there's a look at vollmer peak where we'll have temperatures approaching 90 today. but upper 70s around the bay and

comfortable 60s with partly cloudy skies at the coast. so lisa, thank you. >> new information on a deadly crash on 280 in san mateo county. chp says one person is dead and two others are injured . the accident happened just before 3 a.m. on southbound 280 and eastbound 92. the chp says it appears a black suv hit a concrete overpass barrier. uh- then veered back into the middle lane where it was stalled and was slammed into by a white honda crv. the person inside the black suv has died. two people in the white honda have minor injuries, according to the chp. and another fatal crash on 101 in san francisco near silver avenue. police say prior to the crash, they received a report of a wrong-way driver on vermont. and you can see here where traffic was at a standstill going north in the portola. happened right before the 280 connection. well this is it. the flagship nordstar from in downtown san francisco is closing for good today. the

store has operated in the westfield san francisco center for more than two decades. one nordstrom employee told us the number of people coming into the mall is way down, which reflects the latest city data showing declining business. yes, in fact, sales tax revenue for soma, where the mall is located , has seen a 25% drop. when you compare the first quarter of 2019 to 2023. now the mayor's office says it's working on changing laws and reforming taxes to bring more businesses to the area. also in san francisco, we're learning new details on a stabbing that happened overnight in golden gate park. and police say it happened around 930 last night on john f kennedy drive. according to investigators, when they arrived to the scene, two teenagers were stabbed and taken to the hospital. we're told both are expected to be okay and the investigation is ongoing. anyone with information is asked to call sfpd. to the latest now on a crash that killed three us marines overnight. it happened in australia where 23 marines

were on board this aircraft for a military exercise when it crashed. all of them are injured, some critically. five marines were taken to the hospital and are still in serious condition this morning. we're told one of them is in surgery and this isn't the first time something like this has happened. in fact, in june last year, a crash involving the same type of aircraft killed five marines in glamis, california. australian defense forces are assisting us personnel while the cause of this crash is being investigated. developing news now and what authorities are calling a racially motivated shooting out of jacksonville, florida. there was a prayer vigil at a church this morning to honor the three people shot and killed at a dollar general store. the mayor alongside with the state and community leaders, were there to offer comfort and a call for action. a second prayer vigil is planned for this evening. this morning, we're learning more about the messages left behind from the suspect.

abc news reporter chuck sivertsen tells us more. plus, the reaction from community leaders. >> a huge police response in jacksonville, florida, after a gunman opened fire inside a dollar general store. >> the jacksonville has suffered the loss of three precious lives at the hands of an active shooter. >> police say the suspect, a white male in his 20s, entered the store dressed in tactical gear and armed with an ar style rifle and a handgun. three people were killed before the shooter took his own life. authorities say all three victims were black. two men and one woman. the fbi says it's investigating hate crimes are always and will always remain a top priority for the fbi because they are not only attack on a victim, they are also meant to threaten and intimidate an entire community. jacksonville mayor donna deegan visited the scene shortly after the attack. >> well, i'm heartbroken, obviously. we must do everything that we can in to dissuade this type of hate.

>> according to investigators, the suspect sent his father a text message early saturday afternoon saying to check his computer. his family then called the clay county sheriff's office after finding writings allegedly by the suspect. >> portions of these manifestos detailed the shooter's disgusting ideology of hate. plainly put, this shooting was racially motivated and he hated black people. >> jacksonville now in mourning . >> the people in this community , they're hurting. and they have every right to you know, this this makes no sense. i am very, very angry right now. you know, we got kids in this community. seeing all of this and this is unnecessary. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. >> in the east bay oakland residents are fed up with street crimes. and this weekend, some people finally got a chance to speak directly with alameda county district attorney pamela price about the changes they want to see. abc7 news reporter

answer hassan has the story. >> sitting center stage. alameda county district attorney pamela price. i'm not only the first black woman to sit in this seat, i'm the first foster kid to sit in this seat. this was another in a series of community forums. this time focused specifically on public safety in oakland. she was joined by representatives from the mayor's office and the police department. we do know that gang and group shootings still represent the majority of the crime in the city of oakland. >> rising crime and how to deal with it was the big topic. >> price spent time explaining how her office has respond. >> ing we've charged over 7600 cases, including murder and serious violent felonies. then came the questions. >> i think one of the biggest problems was all the people complaining about the crime and charges about enhancements. >> da price spoke of how her office is prosecuting cases and the reforms she was elected to implement as she explained, enhancements don't deter crime and are racially biased, but

enhancements force us to invest in prisons and is absolutely essential that we stop using them most understand that da price is new to the office and her efforts will take time. but some are still convinced this approach won't work. were you satisfied with what you were hearing today? >> no, i wasn't. if you're dealing with a person that they deal in fear and intimidation, you can't meet them with compassion. you have to deal with them with fear and retaliation. >> the discussion also focused on improving educational opportunities and providing better paying jobs for young people, both which can serve as deterrents to crime. rachel grissom says she hopes all the changes being discussed will start to show in the future. >> it was important just so that there's no speculation, so that da price could hear directly from the members of this community how we feel about what's happening in oakland. >> in oakland. answer hassan, abc7 news. >> in the north bay. now the

people you see on these boats may soon be on their way out. dozens of people who live along them along richardson bay will have to figure out a new housing plan. according to the marin independent journal, county supervisors approved a contract to bring an outreach caseworker into the picture. the caseworker will try to get people to move off these boats in exchange, they'll get a one year federal housing voucher from the marin housing authority. the process will cost over $300,000. despite local laws, the county says many have lived on their boats illegally for decades from boats to branches. now take a look at this. a large tree topples over in san francisco. so, thankfully, there are no reports the tree landed on anyone or anyone's cars. but as you can see here, crews spent the night cleaning up the mess. it's unclear how or why it fell. this is right near the intersection of pacific and sansome street. we're just glad no one was hurt . developing news now. evacuations are slowly being

lifted around the island of maui as firefighters make progress battling those wildfires. the situation is something one north bay woman knows all too well. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard shares how she's helping survivors rebuild their lives. >> i tend to see the challenges as i tend to see the heartache. >> annie barber is on the ground in maui helping wildfire survivors move forward with their insurance claims, which can be overwhelming. >> the people are traumatized and they have what i call fire brain, their brains fuzzy. they can only navigate so much. and i see a lot of fear. >> that fear is something annie knows about all too well. >> immediate bond. they know that. i understand. >> she lost her family's home in santa rosa's coffee park during the 2017 tubbs fire, which burned thousands of homes and killed two dozen people. this was annie's home before and after, reduced to rubble. >> that's something that doesn't go away. it's a grief that you

have to navigate. >> annie works for united policyholders, a san francisco based nonprofit helping homeowners get the insurance resources they need. besides assisting with paperwork and overcoming red tape, she's also there to listen. >> my heart is with them. i relate to them and i try to just give them the best advice that i can. this is just crazy. >> i can't even. it's just too much. i've lost friends and i've just i've been here 48 years and i've never seen anything like this in my entire life. >> i'm not going to get the number exactly right. it's either 36 or 38 times that a survivor has to tell their story before they can even begin to heal. >> annie has also helped survivors of the 2018 camp fire in paradise, one of the most destructive in california history. today, this is her rebuilt home in coffey park, post-fire annie hopes to bring the same closure to the people

in the distance just starting to break up. just a bit. you can see traffic is moving along nicely. time now is 915. the south bay is showing its pride. this weekend. today it concludes its pride week with a parade in san jose. now, if you plan to go to it, it starts at 1030 at julian and market streets in san jose. as abne reporter tara campbell repo, this year's event is all about living out proud. >> the party is getting started in san jose, silicon valley pride kicking off with a night festival saturday. >> what's the time where we're able to really just live out loud and be whoever we want to be and not be questioned or have weird looks at us living out loud and living out proud. >> the theme of this year's pride living out proud is a great way to celebrate pride. >> it takes us back to the roots of pride. nicole altamirano is the ceo of silicon valley pride and says living out proud is as important as ever. we're seeing

the legislation that is sweeping across the nation, trying to take us back in time. >> i mean, obviously with like everything that's going on in the world, we need to make sure that we're like back together and strong and showing up. >> the aclu is currently tracking nearly 500 bills taking aim at lgbtq plus rights, many aimed at the transgender community. >> me coming out and being in community gives strength to some of those, especially transgender folks these days that feel so isolated. thousands of people are expected to show up for this year's pride festivities. >> many of them allies. i have a queer kid myself, and so volunteering and supporting and being an advocate for the queer community is just super important to me. >> it's a community that unfortunately doesn't receive unconditional support. and so i really think we have to be there for these people on their journeys. >> cassie chung is a high school student in san jose and says she's here to have fun and show her support.

>> but it shows how tight knit of a community we are and it shows that we're not going to back down and we have a lot of resilience. >> tara campbell, abc seven news in the east bay, a refugee community is learning more about resources aiming to help them live fuller lives. >> congressman eric swalwell hosted a resource fair in union city. many of those who attended were afghan refugees, concerned about helping family members back home. >> we've got the largest afghan american population in the whole country. in fact, fremont is home to little kabul. the story in the kite runner from kabul to fremont is one that people all over the world know, and this community is hurting after the afghan evacuation back in 2021. and they want to know what are we doing to get their family members over here, especially those who served alongside the us military? >> swalwell says the event is meant to establish trust with refugees and keep promises made to afghan citizens who help the

us military during the war. now, the concord naval weapons station project is moving forward with a new master developer for brookfield properties was selected by the city council saturday. this is the third attempt at hiring a developer for the 5000 acre site. the reuse plan would take on 2300 acres, roughly half the site to create a mixed used and transit oriented community. see, it's been abandoned since 1999 and now it's the largest development currently underway in the bay area. well, if you like, our wearable art, maybe gourmet food, you can get all of that and more at palo alto's 40th annual festival of the arts. the event features a wide variety of exhibits and attractions along university avenue over 250 artists are expected to have their work on display from unique and one of a kind art pieces to wearable art. this beloved festival has something for everybody, including an italian street painting expo along with

specialty foods, wines and local beers. you know, we hope we're doing something right because we get so many returning artists that come back year after year. >> and really the guests love coming back each year to see the returning artists. >> i see why it looks like a lot of fun. you see the kids playing with the chalk there. the event is hosted by the palo alto chamber of commerce, and it will be a nice day out in palo alto if you plan on going. lee says. how's the temperature shaping up? >> upper 70s there. stephanie so yeah, very nice feeling like summer. and as we look at live doppler seven right now, the clouds breaking up a little bit sooner out over the bay. so a nice looking day for santa cruz 59 degrees. we had a little bit of sun here. temperatures climbing through the upper 70s. it's 57 downtown, 61 in oakland. mountain views at 64 as well as san jose. sunny skies there. half moon bay, 59. and a look at the oakland airport where it is partly sunny. looking at temperatures today into the 70s. so a warm up, a modest one

around the bay. 56 santa rosa novato 55. we have had the haze in somewhat foggy conditions up in the north bay. it's been sunny though all morning long in our inland valleys. and you can see at the airport here, the low cloud deck beginning to break up. so we've got the clearing skies for the next hour or so. and then hazy, modern air quality, slightly warmer. this afternoon for most of us. and then getting hot inland tuesday day and wednesday. so if you are headed to the game, the braves and the giants, mid 60s. so it's going to definitely be warming up there with the breeze kicking up to about 16, 17 miles an hour throughout the afternoon. and then by 4:00, low 70s in the south bay. good ten degrees warmer for the silicon valley parade where temperatures have been climbing through the 60s. and by noontime some upper 70s, mid 80s there in the afternoon. and that's right where we should be for this time of year, looking at low 90s inland. so coming up about 3 to 5 degrees

this afternoon. inland but even so, 2 to 4 degrees around the bay for those upper 70s in oakland and temperatures at about 91. santa rosa. so pretty warm there up in the north bay wine country will be even hotter as we go through the next several days. the accuweather seven day forecast a few degrees warmer, 3 to 5 degrees warmer today for most of us and then into your monday looking at temperatures just a few more degrees, climbing high. pressure builds in for the warmest days of the week come tuesday and wednesday, where temperatures could be at about 100 degrees in livermore. and then as we get into thursday, not as warm and that holiday weekend, labor day , much, much cooler. so this time the warmest days, not hitting the weekend but actually this today is pretty nice out there. >> yeah it'll be good to know in the aqi is now dropped to moderate from good so we can expect to see some haze. you think. yeah. >> once we get into some warmer temperatures, we get into more mixing. the winds kick up. so it

presidential election. >> well, it's pretty unusual to schedule a tour to see the worst parts of a city. >> now, that was scheduled in san francisco this weekend, but as we found out, it actually never happened. abc's seven news was at civic center plaza where the quote, doom loop walking tour was scheduled to begin. it was promoted to take people through mid-market, the tenderloin and union square. now it's unclear who exactly organized this tour, but contact information online indicated it was sold out instead, we found a walking tour group focusing on the positive aspects of the area. >> there's so much more in this neighborhood. we want to show i want to show that people live in this neighborhood, people who have worked all of their lives live in this neighborhood. there are children. and it's a community that's very diverse and there's a lot of care and loving that. we really are a neighborhood and a community. >> the tour guide lives in the tenderloin and went through substance abuse recovery in the

past. she's thankful for the community opening its arms to her. later today, the san francisco department of public health will join businesses to raise awareness about overdose prevention. an it's happening at noon and the standard five and ten ace hardware on california street. it's in advance of national overdose awareness day, which is on thursday this week. now this comes as a first of its kind treatment for fentanyl overdoses is about to begin human testing. the treatment would be administered before the drug is taken. abc7 news reporter justin dorsey explains why it could be a game changer in this epidemic. >> a sobering dose of reality. fentanyl remains the leading cause of death for people ages 18 to 45 and the cause of 90% of overdose fatalities. experts say more options are needed to prevent loss of life, despite the availability of things like narcan. >> we continue to see an all time high overdoses throughout the country. and we think our big news is we have something that we think will help address

this public health crisis. >> born out of san jose based investment firm altamont pharmaceutical holdings cessation therapeutics has developed a new monarch clonal antibody therapy. the fda has authorized a human clinical trial of the 1004 injection that provides know high and prevents any type of overdose, whether it's injected intravenous daily or snorted through the nose or even taken orally. >> once it gets to the bloodstream, this antibody is going to grab it with high affinity and prevent it from from inducing its harmful effects in the brain. >> unlike narcan that's given by someone else after an overdose, the antibody would be given by a doctor before someone uses fentanyl and has shown 30 days of overdose prevention in non human testing. the hope is that this would be another tool in the fight against fentanyl deaths. >> we're trying to get to people of high risk individuals before they experience an overdose and provide a protective mechanism in the form of this antibody. so fentanyl is rendered ineffective. >> the santa clara county

pacifica to half moon bay 70 daly city downtown warmer by about five degrees. and up in the north bay it has been pretty nice, but not as hot as it could be, right? 90 today for you in calistoga. a little hazy there. napa, 85 and on the east bay. nice afternoon in berkeley at 78 fremont warming to 80. it's going to get pretty toasty the next couple of days around the bay shore. so not really used to that too much. but here in our inland valleys you can take the heat in today, about 92. not too bad there in pittsburgh, 90 in pleasanton, but the hottest day of the week remains to be on wednesday, where by 430 we'll be at 90. and then inside the stadium there for beyonce, it is going to stay hot and sticky outside, dropping through the 70s and 60s during the evening hours. so the accuweather 70 forecast, we're all a little bit warmer today and the haze staying with us. but as we get into your monday we'll still have that. but the air quality gets a little better as those
