solutions to the problem and silicon valley pride wraps up in grand fashion on abc7 news starts now. >> building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. >> when people come to san francisco they want to be able to go to a world class store. that's part of the experience today. >> that experience is changing as nordstrom bids farewell to the city. shoppers say they're sad to see it go, but one leader is already looking to the future. and what's next for retail? downtown thanks for joining us. i'm j.r. stone. happening now, san francisco's flagship nordstrom store is officially closed and today marked the store's final day in business after 35 years downtown , the doors closed for good just moments ago at 5:00, nordstrom opened at the corner of fifth and market streets back in october of 1988. the store

spanned an impressive 312,000ft■!s, occupying five floors of the san francisco center mall, according to the san francisco chronicle. the store did $2 million in business on its first day. nordstom officials called it their strongest opening in history, but that luster faded in recent years with a lack of foot traffic in the area and safety concerns. today's closure of nordstrom comes just after a month after the westfield sign was removed from the mall. that came after the owner turned over the property to its lender in june after diminishing sales. today abc7 news reporter cornell bernard talked to shoppers and city officials about the end of an era. >> it's a sad day because it's a wonderful store. it's been an anchor in san francisco. >> julie was one of the first shoppers riding that signature spot escalator sunday for nordstrom, his last day of business at the san francisco center. lesley simmons and her

daughter hadn't heard the news. >> i didn't realize that today was the last day. and i guess i'm glad that we're here unexpectedly, just to, you know, walk around one last time. >> the once vibrant store is now desolate with plenty of empty displays. >> it's kind of upsetting, you know, being a native of san francisco and just seeing how downtown is like just kind of going away. >> nordstrom announced in may it was closing the store due to declining sales. employees say they were not surprised. >> it is definitely partially due to the crime in the area and covid has a big impact on a lot of businesses. this flagship store opened back in 1988 and you better believe back then it was a really big deal. >> nordstrom can't put its finger on how many customers have crowded into the store. this weekend, someone estimated 60,000 for friday's opening. abc seven news was there for nordstrom's grand opening back in the 80s. denise remembers it well. you know, just coming up

and just, you know, the escalator there and just being excited about it today. there's a large police presence on market street, the future of the san francisco center mall is unknown. >> i will say this. you know, we have some serious issues that we have to work on here in san francisco. >> supervisor matt dorsey is optimistic. >> san francisco has always had ups and downs, but i'm going to tell you, we always come back and i'm not going to lose my optimism about my district or my city in san francisco, cornell, bernard, abc7 news. >> i was there earlier. certainly a different look. well, as nordstrom says so long to san francisco, ikea is celebrating its first weekend of business just a block away. the new store along market street opened wednesday. it focuses on home furnishing accessories and small space living. this is the first ikea to open in the bay area in 20 years. it's been a deadly weekend on bay area freeways. authorities are investigating five deadly crashes that all happened

overnight. one in redwood city, two in san francisco. and two in e rth bay. chp says in saint helena, a woman was thrown from a vehicle near nichelini winery . and in forestville, an 18 year old pedestrian was killed in a hit and run. the crash in redwood city left one person dead and two others hurt. it happened just before three this morning on southbound 280 and eastbound 92. chp says it appears a black suv hit a concrete overpass barrier, then veered back into traffic where it was slammed into by a white honda cr-v person inside the black suv died. two people in the white honda have minor injuries, according to officers. in san francisco, a person was killed along highway 101 near silver avenue just before the 280 connection. police say just before the crash, that was around 3 a.m, they received a report of a wrong-way driver on a nearby vermont street. this

crash is still under investigation and along 280 also in san francisco, chp says a pedesta syrian was hit and killed. this happened just north of the 101. connector. investigators are trying to figure out why the person was walking along the freeway, say on the heels of those tragedies. regional medical center in san jose held a valuable event today to promote safety for motorcyclists. the event gave life saving information on what riders and the general public can do to help accident victims . that included lessons on how to handle traumatic injuries that happen after a crash. >> we taught some of those bleeding control techniques how to pack the wound, how to apply a tourniquet. it all these things that can be done which will then help save a life or prevent further injury from happening. the idea came from an e.r. nurse at wrmc who also rides motorcycles.

>> soquel's. he realized that only a few of his fellow riders knew how to respond in a crash. a more after, more than a more than five hour stand off, that is with a man ended with a gun piece safely. that man had a gun and it ended peacefully in san francisco's south of market area this morning. police say the man fired a gun as officers tried to detain him at 530 this morning on brannan street near seventh street. no one was hit. the suspect crawled underneath the car where he was soon surrounded by the swat team. police negotiate was got the man to surrender without incident. at about 1030. also in san francisco, glide community gathered not far away in the tenderloin to have an honest and tough conversation about drug use in the city. this month is international overdose awareness month. today glide organized an overdose prevention panel to talk about how to confront this alarming issue in the bay area. this is not easy. >> we've never lived through a

fentanyl overdose crisis before. and so none of us are honestly experts. we're all learning as we go and we're implementing best practices as research comes in. >> the city's medical examiner says 473 people died of accidental overdoses this year in the city through july. the vast majority of them were linked to fentanyl. at that rate, the city is on track to hit a record number of overdose deaths, as new clues in a deadly shooting in florida. the suspect final messages that police say point to a motive. there in silicon valley wraps up its pride week. the highlights from today's grand finale. and it was a warm day. >> gorgeous sunshine, but also hazy. there's another air quality advisory for tomorrow. things are really going to heat up and i'll let you know how hot your neighborhood's going to be . >> get the bay area's number one news and america's number one

>> as your mayor, i take personal responsibility for what happens in our city. it's too much. it's too often. >> today, police released surveillance video from the dollar general store where the shooting happened. they say the alleged gunman was armed with an ar 15 style rifle and a handgun and was outfitted in a tactical vest. investigators say he killed a woman and two men before turning the gun on himself. his father later found a suicide note on his computer portions of these manifesto detailed the shooter's disgusting ideology of hate planning, put this shooting was racially motivated and he hated black people. a second prayer vigil to honor the victims took place this afternoon. three us marines are dead after a helicopter crashed during a training exercise in australia. 23 marines were on board the osprey when it went down.

month, joinbc sews reporter zach fuentes and hassan as they bring you the parade live, starting at 11 a.m. on september 10th. join right now by meteorologist francis dinglasan. i will say i wanted to check out the store the nordstrom. so i walked outside the store. nothing to see there but beautiful day outside. >> oh my gosh. it's so gorgeous out side. it's one of those rare days where you don't need a sweatshirt at the golden gate bridge or anywhere around the city. so tourists in town have a bit of a treat. here's live. doppler seven satellite radar image. so high pressure is building and what it's helping to do is push the clouds away to the coast. and it's also compressing the marine layer. but it's also bringing us some unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups in parts of the north bay near san rafael's, where we see the orange, other parts of the bay area are good to moderate. so there is another air quality advisor, as you can see here from this live camera

from sutro. the hazy conditions is in the sky. so moderate to good air quality expected tomorrow with another advisory through monday. and then it looks like tuesday, we'll start to see better air quality for most everyone. temperatures right now are really warm inland. we're seeing some 90s in fairfield and 92, brentwood, 90. and it's warm. also in livermore, 89, san francisco now 64 degrees, but plenty of sunshine and temperatures have warmed up compared to 24 hours ago. anywhere from actually zero in half. moon bay 21 degrees warmer in san francisco. so and up to six degrees warmer in santa rosa and livermore. tomorrow we're going to warm up even a little bit more beautiful live shot also here from the east bay hills. you see there is a little bit of a marine layer out there. so it's a very compressed marine layer. we will get some clouds overnight, but limited spreading into the inland area. so tomorrow will be another hazy, sunny and even slightly warmer day, very hot inland on wednesday and then

much cooler. so some relief by the end of the week. lows tonight generally in the 50s. and notice not much cloud cover near half moon bay 56 upper 50s for most everyone with clear skies overnight and then tomorrow we'll start to see the mid 90s and some inland areas like fairfield and antioch, san francisco up to 74. but the breeze will keep things cool at half moon bay, 64 degrees down town. oakland 78. san jose 84. santa rosa. 92 degrees. we're going to see less of a marine layer, more sunshine monday into tuesday day. so that's going to get even warmer. temperatures really climbing. and you'll notice we'll see mid 90s by tuesday and it's going to get even warmer on wednesday. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so another hazy and warmer day tomorrow. so the warmth builds the heat really peaks on wednesday near triple digits inland around the bay mid 80s great day to head to the
