this morning. good monday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> good to be with you. i'm morgan norwood in for rhiannon. and we begin with new information about the racially motivated shooting in florida. police say a white gunman killed three black people at a dollar store in jacksonville. >> community leaders gathered last night to remember the victims, including a 19 year old store employee along with a young father of a four year old girl. the fbi calling this a hate crime. >> as we learn more about the alleged shooter's past this morning, we're learning more about the white man accused of gunning down three black people at a dollar general store in jacksonville, leaving a community stunned they didn't deserve this. >> we cannot have someone come from another county. yeah, and shoot up this community. we it ain't no black on black crime. it's a hate crime. >> investigators say these videos show 21 year old ryan christopher palmetto shooting one victim in a car outside the

store, then going inside and murdering two more people before turning the gun on himself. minutes earlier, police say this video shows him at nearby edward waters university, a historically black university where he was spotted putting on a bulletproof vest and was confronted by campus security. >> he had an opportunity to do violence and egwu he did not palmetto quickly leaving the campus. >> officers then alerted police , but it was too late. the fbi now investigating the dollar general rampage as a hate crime . investigators say the gunman had writings on him that were racist along with the swastika painted on one of his weapons. >> the manifesto is a is quite frankly, the diary of a mad man , but with the irrational, what is irrational thoughts? he knew what he was doing. he had 100. he was 100% lucid. police say palmetto had no prior criminal history, but in 2017 he was held at a mental health facility. >> investigators not

elaborating. and in a previous incident, police responded to his home for a domestic violence call. still, officials say palmetto bought the firearms used in saturday's shooting. legally, the attack follows last year's shooting at a buffalo supermarket where white supremacists gunned down ten people. most of them black. recent data from the fbi shows hate crime rose nearly 12% between 2020 and 2021, reaching the highest level since tracking began in the early 1990s. back in jacksonville last night, mourners gathering to remember the three victims as 52 year old angela michelle carr, dollar general employee aj laguerre, aged 19, and 29 year old gerald deshawn galleon, a father of a four year old daughter. >> i'm just going to have to pray and ask god to give me the words and the strength to sit her down and tell her because she's so young and all she knew is her daddy. >> that community shattered this morning. now, former classmates and neighbors describe palmetto

as awkward, saying that he kept to himself. but those we spoke with said that they could never imagine him carrying out such a violent attack. >> meanwhile, in oklahoma, no arrests have been reported after a deadly shooting at this high school football game friday night. a 16 year old was killed. four others were injured. police say shots were fired from the visitor's side of the stadium after an argument between at least two males. hurricane watches are posted along parts of florida's gulf coast as the state now braces for what's now tropical storm idalia. residents have been filling sandbags and making other preparations around tampa. overnight, idalia was dumping heavy rain on mexico's yucatan peninsula and cuba. the storm is expected to strengthen into a category two hurricane as it moves across the gulf, making landfall early wednesday with winds around 100mph. here's a look at the rainfall expected. some isolated areas could see up to ten inches. >> well, we turn now to a closely watched hearing in the georgia election interference case today. one of former president trump's co-defendants

, his former chief of staff, mark meadows, is requesting that his trial be moved to federal court. that hearing will be our first chance to see some of the evidence gathered by georgia prosecutors. abc's ekajati is here with more. ike good morning. what can we expect? >> good morning. morgan well, mark meadows is accused of violating the hatch act, which prohibits federal employees from political activity while on the job. but today his lawyers will argue that meadows was only doing his job as trump's aide when he tried to observe a nonpublic audit of the georgia vote. and when he set up the now infamous phone call between trump and georgia's secretary of state. they argue meadows was working in his capacity as chief of staff and not as a private citizen on now moving the case to federal court would expand the jury pool out of fulton county, an overwhelming democratic county, to more trump friendly areas. meanwhile former president trump's 2024 campaign is cashing in on his mugshot, released at last week. and the

campaign says it's raised more than $7 million since thursday night, taking in a record $4 million on friday alone. andrew, back to you. >> all right. thank you. eight us marines remain hospitalized after a deadly crash involving an osprey aircraft. three others were killed in sunday's crash, which came during an international training exercise in australia. the investigation into the cause could move quickly because the aircraft does have a black box. the safety of the osprey has faced scrutiny in the past. six teen people have been killed in five other crashes since 2012. >> we take you now to south carolina and the investigation into the shooting of a college student who had just returned to campus. police say in the middle of the night he tried to enter a home and got the wrong address. here's abc's derek dennis. >> this morning, the family of 20 year old nicholas anthony d'onofrio, a university of south carolina junior, shot and killed after he apparently tried to enter the wrong house is heartbroken, releasing a

statement saying, we are very proud of nick. he was the son every parent would wish for. he was funny, smart and compassionate and loved life. >> south high street a the subject locking the door. >> authorities say just before 2 a.m. saturday, they got a call about a reported home burglary in the southeast section of columbia. just two miles from the university that call was quickly upgraded to shots fired. d'onofrio found by first responders on the front porch, shot in the upper body on the same street where he lived in an off campus frat house. d'onofrio originally from connecticut, died at the scene. >> i feel personally that there was there was many things that could have been done besides firing shots. >> it's a similar case to another shooting four months ago in kansas city, where teenager ralph jarrell was shot but survived after going to the wrong house to pick up his siblings. the suspected shooter, homeowner andrew lester, was charged with felony assault and armed criminal action. he's pleaded not guilty and is out on

$200,000 bond. as for the case in south carolina, police have so far not released the name of the shooter, nor have they filed any charges. donofrio's father says he moved his son into his frat house just last week before his son started his junior year . andrew morgan. all right, derrick, thank you. >> a use of force investigation is underway in pittsburgh after a violent arrest caught on camera. police are seeing restraining jason martin on the ground as an officer repeatedly punches him. martin is heard yelling, i am not reaching for anything. the police report says he was seen dealing drugs and appeared to conceal a weapon. they claim the officer punched martin when he appeared to reach for a knife and resisted arrest. community groups are demanding a full investigation and the release of all body camera video. >> turning now to hawaii, abc news has obtained exclusive video which residents say shows downed power lines sparking small fires just hours before the disaster that killed at least 115 people earlier this month. that site now under investigation as a possible

bucket compared to how much has been taken from that store in recent months. >> nike over a two year period lost close to $1 million just in that one store. >> the national retail federation says organized retail crime is on the rise. accounting for $94.5 billion in losses in 2021, driven by inflation. and what critics say is a lack of law enforcement. it's extremely difficult to quantify the degree of the problem because not a lot of information is shared in this shocking incident. a group of juvenile suspects robbing a sporting goods store and taking off with guns before being apprehended by police. some retailers taking matters into their own hands. walgreen has opened an anti-theft store in chicago, all but two aisles of merchandise are locked up and need to be ordered from a kiosk and dollar tree, which says shoplifting is a factor in falling profits, is removing some products from stores in certain locations. others are shutting their doors. nordstrom

in support of the player. the man at the center of the kiss that set off global outrage has now been suspended by world soccer officials as the scandal surrounding him grows. the head of spain's soccer association, luis rubiales, was seen kissing player jenni hermoso on the mouth after the team's world cup win. hermoso says she did not consent and says it's another example of unacceptable behavior that the women's team faces on a regular basis. but friday, rubiales was defiant at a news conference claiming he's the victim of false feminism and saying hermoso agreed to the kiss voy a de meter. >> no voy a de meter. many spanish soccer officials applauded rubiales when he refused to resign. >> spain's soccer association is now supporting him while accusing hermoso of lying and threatening to sue her for defamation. the team's coach was also seen applauding during that news conference, but later released a statement calling the kiss unacceptable. the backlash
