[ laughter ] i got two wallops here starting the week with me. gio and rebecca. good to have you here, both. we want to take a look right now. a live picture of the lincoln memorial and washington mall where tens of thousands of people gathered this weekend for the 60th anniversary of martin luther king's legendary "i have a dream" speech. >> president biden planning to sit down with activists and members of the king family today to discuss the continued push for equal rights for all americans. >> but we begin with new details this morning into the racially motivated mass shooting in florida. a white gun man killing three black people in a dollar store and then turning the gun on himself. >> community leaders gathered last night to remember the victims, including the 19-year-old store employee, along with a young father of a 4-year-old girl. alex presha is live in jacksonville with the latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, robin. yeah, the family of that young father is in shock.

his community is hurting. one resident telling me yesterday that the only thing getting her through right now is faith. this morning this newly released security footage shows the horrific moment a self-proclaimed white supremacist shot and killed three black people at a dollar general before turning the gun on himself. authorities investigating it as a racially motivated hate crime. one that has left this predominantly black neighborhood reeling. >> our community is grappling to understand why this occurred. i urge us all not to look for sense in a senseless act of violence. >> reporter: police say the suspect first arrived at edwards water university a historically black university and put on a bulletproof vest. police using this video as part of their investigation showing the suspect getting dressed before the shooting. campus security confronts him, tells him to leave and later notifies law enforcement. >> they say there's a suspicious

person on campus. he had an opportunity to do violence. he did not. >> reporter: at 1:08 p.m. surveillance video outside the dollar general shows the shooter, without warning, firing 11 rounds into 52-year-old angela michelle carr's kia, killing her. the gun man then walks into the store and shoots a 19-year-old employee and minutes later, after multiple witnesses flee out the back of the store, 29-year-old gerald galion enters, the shooter killing him and missing his girlfriend. >> at 1:14:23 the suspect enters the office. at 1:18 the suspect texts his father and says use a screwdriver to get into my room. the father enters the room and finds a last will and testament of the suspect along with a suicide note on his lap top. >> reporter: the family eventually calling police, but by that time the rampage was over. the shooter taking his own life as officers arrived on scene. all of this carnage happening in a little over ten minutes. investigators finding writings on the gun man which they say

contained hateful ideology as well as a painted swastika. they say he was involuntarily held for 72 hours in a mental health facility as a minor in 2017 but had no prior history and purchased his gun, a handgun and ar-15 style rifle legally. >> there was no criminal record. nothing. there was nothing that we could have done to stop him from holding a firearm, a rifle or handgun. there was no red flags. >> it was hatred for this individual who lived in another county and to do a senseless act. it's just unacceptedable. >> reporter: the grieving community reflecting on the lives lost like a father of a 4-year-old daughter gerald galion. loved ones saying she was everything to him. when you look at the situation knowing that you have to tell your grand daughter, how do you do it? >> i don't know. i'm just gonna have to pray and ask god to give me the words and the strength to sit her down and tell her.

she's so young. all she knew was her daddy. >> reporter: that grandmother tells me they still haven't figured out how to tell gerald's 4-year-old daughter the news. she's dreading the conversation. as for this investigation, the fbi is now looking at this as a hate crime. rebecca? >> alex presha, thank you, alex. we turn now to idalia on the move. the storm targeting florida's gulf coast. it's not the only major weather story happening now. our weather team is standing by live with the latest but we begin with rob marciano in tampa with the track and timing of that storm. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. at this time yesterday this storm wasn't even named. now we're looking at the potential for a major hurricane coming into a very vulnerable part of the gulf of mexico. let's look on the satellite picture. about 100 miles south of the western tip of cuba is the center of this storm and now finally drifting north.

rapidly intensify over the warm waters. category 3 storm making landfall somewhere from tampa through wednesday morning. the hurricane watches are posted for much of the western coast of florida. storm surge will be an issue, obviously, with this storm coming in, especially for tampa. 4-7 and 6-11 feet of storm surge. i expect to see a flurry of evacuation orders today. inland rainfall will be an issue not just in florida but georgia and parts of the carolinas. gio? >> so many people preparing for that. thank you very much. now let's turn it over to ginger with the record breaking heat and the wild fires in the south. good morning, ginger. >> oh, gio. tiger island fire in louisiana. one of the biggest in louisiana state history. has burned 33,000 acres in just five days. big reason, it has been so hot and has dried things out significantly throughout the month of august.

i mean, look at august 1st. they had some drought. southwest corner and along the gulf. however, they had no extremes. now three weeks later, 50% of them in the second highest level of the drought. that is going to make a big problem. they've got a dozen or so fires burning. still hot heat advisory. tallahassee will feel like 107. new orleans had an all time record yesterday, 105. they smashed their old record of 102. we'll have a little break and then it warms back up. robin? >> the heat has been on. all right, ginger. thank you. now to maui, where brush fires led to new evacuations near lahaina just a few miles from the catastrophic wild fires. this with new questions about how the earlier fires started and if anything has been done to impede the investigation. mola lenghi is on maui with details. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, robin. investigations into the cause of the fire intensify, so does the question of handling evidence. maui county claiming in a

lawsuit negligence by hawaiian electric had negligent. at one location near lahaina being investigated as a potential origin, neighbors tell us downed power lines sparked small fires as early as 6:30 a.m. the morning of the lahaina fires. the cell phone video shot by a neighbor that morning. also telling me they saw crews cleaning up those downed lines in the after math of the fires and days before federal investigators arrived to determine a cause, a probe that is on going. the washington post reporting lawyers involved in the suit claim hawaiian electric violated national guidelines by possibly removing critical evidence from the scene too soon. a spokes person for hawaiian electric tells me they have taken significant steps to preserve all equipment in the suspected area of origin but that area had not been sealed off in the days immediately after the fire. now also on saturday, a small

brush fire prompted some evacuations here but was quickly extinguished. evacuations sirens were sounded, according to a firefighter on scene. unlike during the lahaina fires when those sirens remained silent. rebecca? >> sounded this time. a lot of questions. mola, thank you. we turn to a high stakes hearing in the georgia election case. one of donald trump's co-defendants, former chief of staff mark meadows, is seeking to move his trial to federal court. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is tracking the very latest in atlanta. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning to you. the hearing here in federal court in atlanta will give us our first glimpse as some of the evidence. it's also an early test of the strength of the district attorney's case. this morning former president trump's one time chief of staff mark meadows will ask a judge to move the election subversion case into federal court. his lawyers will argue meadows was only doing his job as trump's top aide when he set up

the phone call between trump and secretary of state brad rafesperger. >> on that call, trump was heard asking rafesperger to find votes. >> look, all i want to do is this. i just want to find 11,780 votes which is one more than we have. because we won the state. >> reporter: district attorney fani willis intends to argue meadows violated the hatch act which bars federal employees from political activity while on the job. >> mark meadows is arguing that he was there as chief of staff rather than a private citizen or part of the trump campaign. if you look at it, it was most likely that he was operating as part of the republican party which would be a political role and not his official role as chief of staff. >> reporter: four other defendants are also seeking to move into federal court where a trial jury would be drawn from more than fulton county, which voted overwhelmingly for joe biden in 2020.

it's possible moving one defendant's case could mean all 19 are tried in federal court. so aides for trump and some alleged co-conspirators will be watching close phreup there's also a hearing in the special counsel case about the election in january 6th. special counsel jack smith wants trial to begin in january. lawyers for the former president will be asking the judge not to set a trial date until sometime in april of 2026. robin? >> all right, aaron. appreciate your reporting. now to the investigation into a military aircraft that killed three u.s. marines and seriously injured five others. all on an osprey that went down during exercises in northern australia. james longman joins us. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, robin. two u.s. marine ospreys was heading to military exercises in australia when one of them came down over a remote island. it's not the first tragedy involving these aircraft.

this morning an urgent investigation is under way into a military aircraft crash that killed at least three u.s. marines and injured 20 others, 5 seriously on a remote island off australia's northern coast. all 23 marines were on board an osprey aircraft for a multicountry training exercise. officials say that recovery exercises are on going. the osprey has had a history of mechanical problems since it was introduced in the 1980s. in august 2000, the military temporarily grounded its entire fleet of them after a crash which killed all 19 marines aboard. in june of 2022, five more died in another crash in california. >> this is the second fatal accident for the marine corps. it may be time to stop, take a step back and make sure the marine corps is doing everything it can to fly safely. >> reporter: sunday's exercise named predator's run is now an effort to counter china's

military presence in the pacific. it comes several weeks after another joint exercise which included some 34,000 military personnel. >> we continue to increase rotational presence of the u.s. forces in australia which will enhance our maritime domain awareness in the region. >> reporter: police say investigators will likely be at this crash site for another ten days or so. rebecca? >> james longman, thank you. we turn now to russia. officially confirming that the head of the para military organization the wagner group was killed in a plane crash. we are tracking the latest. good morning, britt. >> reporter: good morning. russia says it has proof that yevgeny prigozhin is dead. two months after he led the failed mutiny against moscow. russian investigators say after forensic testing it can confirm prigozhin was among ten people on board the ill fated flight last week. russia hasn't said what may have caused the private jet to suddenly fall out of the sky not

long after takeoff northwest of moscow. the kremlin is denying it has anything to do with this crash, calling such claims an absolute lie. ukraine says its troops are making progress as they try to push south, confirming it liberated a village which may open the way for further advances. gio? >> all right, britt. thank you. so many questions. we're going to turn to that developing story overnight. nearly 5,000 pilots are now under investigation after being accused of hiding health issues. the faa already ordering 60 of them to stop flying. the probe began in 2019 after concerns from the va inspector general's office that the pilots were also military veterans, quote, maybe hiding mental health conditions or tpraup fraudulently receiving disability benefits. 600 of those pilots still under investigation have licenses to fly passenger airlines.

hitting the grass, my gosh, flipping and spinning several times. priest was taken to a local hospital and released sunday. thank goodness he's okay. >> scary to see that. >> absolutely. we've got a lot more ahead, including ginger with our take on the united states state of taco competition. ready for that? >> nothing says breakfast like tacos. we're in. now the investigation into the fatal shooting of a south carolina college student, a 20-year-old, who had just moved in for his junior year was possibly mistaken for a burglar. trevor ault is here with that story. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. police say so far this looks like it began as an accident. the student, nick donofrio had just moved into a house down the street just a few days prior and he was found shot to death on the door step of the wrong home. this morning police investigating the fatal shooting of university of south carolina student nick donofrio who they believe accidentally tried entering the wrong home.

authorities say they responded to a call of a burglary in progress around 2 a.m. saturday that was quickly upgraded to a shots fired call. >> firing through the door. >> reporter: police say when they arrived on scene, they found 20-year-old donofrio dead on the front porch of the home with a gun shot to his upper body. donofrio had recently moved into a house on the same street, just two miles from the heart of the university campus. the police department said its investigators are consulting with the solicitors office about the circumstances of the shooting. they have not yet identified the person who shot donofrio, and no charges have yet been filed. >> i feel personally that there was many things that could have been done besides firing shots. >> reporter: donofrio's parents tell abc news they're in disbelief and are heart broken. his father moved him into that fraternity home just last week, days before nick started his junior year.

what is it that you learned about people over the years? >> i have learned that they don't change. inside people have remained the same, i think. >> after he retired barker handed over the reins to drew carey who is still going strong. more than 50 years later with the price is right. carey posted on social media, there hasn't been a day that i haven't thought of bob barker and i thank him and will carry his memory in my heart forever. when you look up game show hosts, bob barker's pictures appear. right? >> how did you do on spinning the wheel? >> it was a heavy wheel. suspect ryan christopher palmetter first arrived at a historically black university and put on a bulletproof vest. surveillance video outside the dollar general shows the shooter, without warning, firing 11 rounds into 52-year-old angela michelle's kia killing her. the gun man then walks into the store and shoots a 19-year-old employee. minutes later, after multiple witnesses flee out the back of the store, 29-year-old gerald galian enters. the shooter killing him and missing his girlfriend. the suspect's family alerting police but by that time the rampage was over, the shooter taking his own life as officers arrived on the scene. >> there was no criminal record. nothing. there was nothing that we could have done to stop him from owning a firearm, a rifle or handgun. there was no red flags. >> reporter: the grieving community reflecting on the lives lost like gerald galian, father of a 4-year-old daughter. loved ones saying she was everything to him.

the grandmother of his 4-year-old daughter telling me they haven't even figured out how to break the news to the little girl. they're dreading the conversation. as for the investigation, the fbi is now looking at this as a hate crime. gio? >> alex, thank you. just awful. especially because it's happening right now with a milestone in the fight for civil rights. today marking the 60th anniversary of the march on washington. faith abubey was there for the weekend events commemorating the occasion. good morning to you, faith. >> reporter: good morning, gio. there were people at this march over the weekend who were at the very same spot 60 years ago when dr. martin luther king jr. delivered that iconic i have a dream speech right over there. they remembered the heart felt battles for civil rights and have seen the victories that have been won over the year. but 60 years later, they tell me they feel like they're still fighting to protect some of the basic rights in dr. king's dream.

take a look at some of the video and images from the weekend. thousands packed the national mall to remember the anniversary of the march. you can see, it was a smaller crowd than the nearly quarter million on this day back in 1963. now we spoke to some of the original march organizers and they tell me the fight is still about freedom, still about access to the ballot box and beating back housing discrimination and police violence. they also high lighted some of the recent supreme court rulings that have gutted abortion rights and affirmative action. some of these marchers tell me they're very much committed to this fight. in the mean time, at the white house, president biden and some activists along with some members of the dr. king family are expected to meet today to discuss the on going push for equal rights for all americans. rebecca? >> never lose that hope. okay faith, thank you. we turn now to the little league championships and the home run heard round the world.

by cheryl's beloved brother raymond white jr. she was the definition of a trail blazer, but you probably never heard her name. >> there was a time that she was a household name. she was viral before we knew what viral was. everywhere i went as a kid, everyone knew who cheryl white was. >> in 1971, cheryl white galloped into the world of horse racing and conquered the feat of becoming the first ever african-american woman jockey at just 17 years old. >> the grandstands were full. on her shoulders was the idea, if she wins it means women are equal, it means black people have a place in this sport. if she doesn't, it means the opposite. this is what a 17-year-old girl was carrying with her in the saddle. >> the daughter of a famous horse trainer, cheryl had been honing her skills since she was old enough to ride. and her brother raymond says she could race with the best of them. what were the qualities about her that made her such a great jockey? >> they say a good jockey, their back should be flat. you can put a cup of coffee on it.

her form was perfect. >> over the next two decadeses she kept making history of her own, winning 750 races and several coveted awards. how do you think we don't know that your sister is not more well known? >> my sister wasn't a great self-promoter. she was the type that just wanted to ride. she wanted to be left alone. she did not brag about herself. i was the bragger in the family. >> no! >> oh, yeah. >> the events of her life inspiring "the jockey and her horse" written by sara maslinere and cheryl's beloved brother, raymond white jr. how did this happen? >> sara contacted me through e-mail back in 2021 and said she bought a copy of "jet" magazine, the original copy my sister was on.

very self-proclaimed fan of cheryl white. >> she was the serena and venus williams of her time and she has been erased from history. >> the book is told from multiple perspectives, even at times through the eyes of cheryl's horse. >> every detail of the book, every race she ran, every setback is completely in keeping with her history. the part that's narrative fiction is that our cheryl goes on a journey and discovers that she's not singular, that she's part of a long legacy and a race legacy of black contributions to thoroughbred racing. >> you just called your sister a true american legend. >> she was a pioneer. at 17 during the turbulence that we had going on in the early '70s, she was amazing. to go through everything she went through, fighting for the right to ride and wanting to ride. >> raymond says he hopes the book inspires the next generation to ride toward their own finish line, whatever that may be. >> the book is not just to inspire children to be jockeys or ride horses, but to inspire them to be anything they want to be.

them next year. you can have them all year long. >> all right. now we're moving on to this. we want to know about -- how do you know if a plant is needing more growing room? >> it's out grown its home. let me show you here. you can see through the drainage hole there's a root growing out. if you see that, it's not getting the nutrients that it needs. you want to take it out and put it in a new planter with fresh soil, like these. >> but they don't have holes on the bottom. >> no. just water those. put that right in. you want to give that plant access to new nutrients. if it's like that, it's outgrown its space at the time. >> bad nutrients. >> this fresh new soil is what will add new nutrients. >> let's talk about bugs. >> let's talk about them. >> i do love having plants. i have a tree in the house. i did have to get rid of one of them because i noticed some visitors. >> we don't want those. no one wants insects in their home.
