11:00 p.m. wednesday. the concern is dry northerly winds gusting, low humidity means any fires that develop will rapidly grow in intensity and in size. as you will notice, the fire danger index showing moderate to high fire danger for parts of the bay area as we head towards tomorrow afternoon, and that only increases them along with the smoke from the fires burning up the northern california and the oregon border. here is the smoke forecast. it is hazy tomorrow, more so as we go into wednesday. there is an air quality advisory in effect for the entire bay area through tomorrow due to the smoke from those wildfires. expect moderate to good air quality tomorrow, but there may be times when it worsens. i will be back to know -- to let you know when the hottest day is expected. ama: cruise from santa rosa down to santa cruz were busy jumping on fires this afternoon.

tonight, abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez is taking a closer look at fire cruisers and what could be the first power shut off the summer. lauren: mop up operations underway after several small vegetation fires broke out throughout the bay area monday. calfire lnu and the vacaville fire district responded to a fire off cherry road. the officials say the cause is under investigation. in the south bay, calfire czu contained a fire in santa cruz county. one minor structure was lost and no one was hurt. fire officials say it is this time of the year one fire season tends to ramp up. >> going into september october, it is typically the time of year we see an uptick in vegetation fires. j.r.: battalion chief sam filson says that this season, fire personnel have been focusing on the fires in the northern part

tonight. the governor of hawaii says the search for victims over. the governor says he does not expect the number of deaths to go much higher. the u.s. navy dive team is now looking for any more victims in the water as the final stage of the search. despite this, it is unclear how many people are still unaccounted for. the fbi are trying to verify the names of hundreds of people reported missing. ama: the cdc is reporting a rise in covid cases over the last week. cases nationwide jumped almost 19%, though covid numbers are still low compared to previous peaks. as bricks have been reported across the nation's preschools, -- across the nation's preschools and summer camps. dan: to the east coast, tonight a faculty member is dead after

another shooting on a college campus, this one at the university of north carolina-chapel hill. the campus was locked down for hours today. students. texts warning them about a dangerous man on campus. heavily armed officers from several agencies were called to the campus to assist the unc police department. chancellor pleaded with his student body following this traumatic tragedy. >> we are here for you. i am pleading with you to use any of the resources that you may need and coming together as a community to ensure your safety. dan: the shooting happened in a building that houses laboratories. police have made one arrest. the faculty member killed has not yet been named. it is hard to imagine something like this happening anywhere until it hits close to home. unc-chapel hill is a campus i know very well. not only is it my alma mater, chapel hill is also my hometown. the shooting is now causing some

students to question their sense of security in a college town that is ideal in so many ways. the new school year started just last monday. >> my best friend was like, let's get away from cincinnati, and i do not even feel comfortable going to north campus anymore. it has shaken me a bit to think that -- i thought this was a safe place. dan: and it always has been a safe place. today's shooting is only four years removed from another school shooting at unc-charlotte in 2019. two students were shot and killed there. back in chapel hill, classes are canceled through tomorrow. ama: education is an important part of building a better bay area, and tomorrow the san francisco unified school district to print and is expected to address the news of a potential closer of more than -- closure of more than two dozen schools in san francisco. san francisco teachers union claims the district has been mismanaging finances for years.

>> if the district's finances were managed differently, sfusd could play -- could pay competitive wages. they engaged in needless short-term borrowing practices, would have cost the district millions. increased upper m spending on positions and incrementally -- exponentially, and enrollment declined. ama: the other hand, the superintendent says they face external factors including declining enrollment and staffing shortages and they need to meet these challenges head-on. dan: cal and stanford are inching closer to a deal to bring the schools to the acc conference next year after the dissolution of the pac-12. the conference stance to bring in an estimated $72 million in revenue if they vote to expand. sports director larry beil set down on our streaming broadcast earlier today to discuss the pros and cons of a move to the acc.

purchases are the heavyweights of silicon valley. some of those on the list include billionaire and venture capitalist michael moretz, billionaire businesswoman lorraine powell jobs, and patrick collison, the sibling cofounders of san francisco-based payment company stripe. we are told the effort is headed by a former goldman sachs trader and according to his linkedin profile, he lives in fairfield. a source close to the network of investors says the project is focused on affordable housing. a representative for the investment group said, we care deeply about the future of solano county and california and believe their best days are ahead. we are proud to partner on a project that aims to deliver access to good paying jobs, affordable housing, clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, open space, and a healthy environment to residents of solano county. local officials are skeptical, citing the lack of
