>> yeah. you are looking live from tallahassee. the storm is set to hit just southeast of the city with officials warning of life threatening storm surge. take a look at this. more than 200 miles away, in tampa, the streets there are already totally flooded. that's how big the storm is. >> really stunning images, gio. the hurricane's impact will also be felt beyond florida, with states of emergency declared there. also in georgia and north and south carolina. we will be follow that path. >> our team is spread out all over the hurricane zone. and a large zone it is. we're going to begin with ginger there in treasure island, florida. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, robin. it is amazing to think, as we have this category 3 hurricane about to make landfall. we're 100 some miles south and east. how strong and how fast this hurricane will remain all the

way through south georgia and south carolina and eventually impact north carolina, too. so we've had tornados already reported, reported warnings that have been peppering the map, from central florida to orlando, daytona beach, jacksonville, brunswick and savannah. even had a warning over brunswick. most extreme was that swell and storm surge. most of that will begin to recede. the water is still pulling on shore. you can see behind me, just incredible amounts of water. that has allowed the ocean water in and will as we go to high tide later this afternoon. as far as winds remember, we have that high wind, 110 possible. possible storm and hurricane force all the way through. hilton head is in a hurricane warning. that's when you know this is a big deal through tonight and even into tomorrow.

we'll be keeping an eye on not just the wind, the surge, but the rain. when you add 6 to 10 inches of rain and clog up some of the rivers. you go to wilmington or myrtle beach, you'll have flooding inevitable in some of these places. that's from treasure island here. guys. >> it truly is. ginger, please take care. fema is warning florida residents take evacuation orders seriously saying few people can survive being in the path of the storm surge. rob marciano is live in tampa. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, robin. i know how much you love this state and parts of it are taking it on the chin this morning. we just finally got a lull in the rain. we had a massive rain band come through, some of the hard eftd rain i have seen since this storm arrived late yesterday afternoon. now that we've had the winds switch, south southwesterly, we

have had a serious storm surge here. this is typical tranquil tampa bay, completely flat. not today. lot of wave action there. big surge up and over the sea wall, flooding this parking lot, causing debris to be pushed up on parts of the causeway. this one is still open. there are other causeway, interstate 278. that's been shut at least east bound because of flooding and debris. this is a trailer filled with bikes, kayaks, paddle boards. that's been getting banged around. those sort of activities aren't going to be happening today. i can tell you that. it was a difficult night last night across tampa bay, as this hurricane absolutely raced the coast. hurricane idalia slamming into the florida coast this morning, bringing life threatening storm surge and winds gusting up to 85 miles per hour in perry, ripping apart this billboard. our affiliate wplg right in the thick of it. >> again, we were talking about

the storm surge in neighborhoods close to the water. that's expected to be nonsurvivable. >> reporter: in the tampa bay area, streets inundated. idalia now a category 4. authorities are warning of catastrophic damage in the big bend area. people in at least 30 florida counties placed under evacuation orders. >> we just hope everybody stays safe. don't put your life at risk. >> reporter: national weather service calling idalia an unprecedented event, since no major hurricanes on record have ever passed through the region. this man using a broom, frying to push back the water from overtaking his home. on cedar key, homes are boarded up. the governor said the city could see up to 13 feet of storm surge. michael bobbitt is riding out the storm in the home that he rebuilt that's 117 years old. >> i wonder if this is the last

night i get to sleep in this beautiful old house. the surge is coming. i don't know how we can possibly make it through the night. >> reporter: we are starting to see the skies brighten. the winds have subsided somewhat. the direction of the winds continue to push the water up to this causeway. we still have some flooding to contend with. our friends to the north contending with the pwrupb of this storm as it makes its way into georgia. >> this is why they call it an extremely dangerous hurricane. rob, thank you very much. please stay safe. thousands this morning are already without power. we are expecting much more of that throughout the day. victor oquendo is in the state capital of tallahassee with what we know so far. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, gio. the rain has been coming down consistently all morning long. coming in sideways.

now it's the wind that's starting to pick up. that's what we're watching so closely in tallahassee. here's why. this city is, simply put, covered in trees. besides being the capital city, that's what it's known for, its urban forestry. many of these trees are historic and they will be put to the test as idalia comes through. with downed trees come downed power line. power outages will be a problem in tallahassee. i have covered storms here before. i have spoken with the locals. doesn't take much for power to go out in tallahassee. i have checked in with officials. they feel confident about the resources they have in place to clear the debris and restore power. but they can't get to work until idalia clears through. we're looking at a long morning in tallahassee. >> thank you so much. it is not just those coastal cities expected to get hit. the storm's impact will be felt inland as well. mireya villarreal is in gainesville.

good morning, mireya. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. overnight we had a consistent am of heavy rain since after midnight. we got a little hip check as the outer bands of the storm made its way on land. we are seeing some pooling in low lying areas. inevitably there will be some flooding here. the biggest concern right now are the winds. overnight we saw gusts between 30 and 40 miles per hour. the experts are predicting we could get up to 75 miles per hour as the storm completely makes landfall. even though it looks calm, we got a little break from the storm, that is what will bring a lot of that wind and possibility of isolated tornados. really, experts are saying if you can, stay inside, shelter inside until this completely passes through. robin? >> as we said, long, long day and night ahead, mireya. thank you. several airports in florida have been shut down ahead of the storm. trevor ault is at la guardia

airport in new york with more on flight delays and cancellations ahead of the holiday weekend. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. there's already about 800 flight cancellations across america so far today. we know there could be several chain reaction ripple effects happening as this storm continues to move in. the bulk of those cancellations are because so far in florida, airports in tampa and seine petersburg and sarasota, they have all completely shut down with idalia moving in. but as we are aware, of course, this is heading into a holiday weekend. a lot of people are planning on taking trips very soon. tsa said they're planning on screening 14 million passengers over the long labor day weekend. that's more than a 10% increase from last year. that punctuates what has been, since memorial day, the busiest stretch of summer travel ever. we have a lot to get to before we get to the weekend. lot of travellers could have their plans disrupted. airlines want people to be aware of travel alerts in case you decide that it's not worth the hassle and you want to reschedule your trip, robin.

>> we also know lot of people will be driving this weekend. so, trevor, when do we think the roads will get busy? >> reporter: so looks like, robin, thursday is when it's going to ramp up and not just get a little busy. that will be the busiest stretch of the whole weekend thursday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. if you're planning on driving, it will be congested almost all day beginning at 11:00 a.m. and going until 9 p.m. late on friday night. we're also monitoring the fact that this storm might cause gas prices to increase because it could halt the oil production in the gulf there. right now the national average for a gallon of gas is $3.82. we've seen it slowly climbing over the past few weeks. we're now back up to where we were this time last year. robin? >> we'll keep all of that in mind, rebecca? turning to the fatal shooting of a unc professor on campus. the suspect is in custody facing a first degree murder charge. alex perez is in chapel hill with more. good morning, alex.

>> reporter: hey, good morning, rebecca. an exact motive remains unclear, but we know authorities are reviewing the suspect's social media accounts as he's being held without bond. this morning the ph.d. student charged with killing a university of north carolina chapel hill professor is behind bars. >> mr. che has been charged with first degree murder. >> reporter: the 34-year-old suspect making his first appearance in court tuesday, charged with first degree murder and possession of a firearm on educational property. investigators say the graduate student in applied physical sciences targeted the professor, who was also the suspect's academic adviser. >> in the last 24 hours we have determined the victim and suspect knew each other and the suspect went directly to the victim and then left. >> reporter: chaos erupting on campus monday afternoon, after reports of shots fired. authorities quickly alerting students to shelter and get somewhere safe.

che arrested an hour and a half later. the exact motive remains unclear. authorities have not recovered a again. yen, described as a beloved colleague, mentor and friend to many, worked at the university since 2019. he was a father of two. and suspect has not yet entered a plea. he's due back in court september 18th. gio? >> all right, alex. thank you for your reporting. we're going to washington now. house majority leader steve scalise announcing he has been diagnosed with a form of blood cancer. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: gio, good morning. leaders on both sides of the aisle are wishing congressman scalise well after the louisiana republican revealed he has been diagnosed with myeloma, a form of blood cancer. he wasn't feeling himself in the past week. he decided to go to the doctor. in a statement he said he's very grateful it was detected early and that the cancer is treatable.

he is the second highest ranking republican in the house. he said he does plan to return back here to washington and work through his treatment which is expected to last several months. myeloma is a relatively uncommon form of cancer. according to the american cancer society, roughly 36,000 people will be diagnosed this year. of course, scalise has overcome immense health challenges in the past. in 2017 he was shot and critically injured while practicing for the congressional softball game. he made a remarkable recovery, returning back to the field one year later. in a staple, house speaker kevin mccarthy said not a gun shot and certainly not cancer can stop scalise from anything he puts his mind to. guys? >> he's already overcome so much. we pray for his full recovery. thank you very much. we're going to turn now to the u.s. open. another round set to get under way this morning after some big wins for americans and heart break for venus williams. lara is there at flushing with the high lights for us. good morning there, lara.

>> good morning to you, robin. you are correct. this is venus williams 24th time playing women's singles here at the u.s. open. the first 21 times she went 21-0 in the opening round. she has lost in the first round in her last two appearances. last night she sure was hoping to turn that statistic around. the oldest player in this year's field, she walked into arthur ashe stadium before the match looking fierce and focused. when she stepped on the court, the crowd was behind her 100%. her foot work though was not there. by her own admission. having just come off an injury. and she was no match for wild card qualifier who won in straight sets. venus said it wasn't the same here without her sister serena, who retired last year. when she was asked about her future plans, she simply smiled and said wasn't sure what the question meant. no way of knowing.

maybe venus herself isn't sure yet whether this would be her last appearance here and what she calls her most favorite place to play. as for the rest of the american women, there are 11 who have advanced to the second round here including number 3 who won in straight sets in a quick first round match. in the men's, number one seed, carlos alcaraz. the reigning champ was winning before he had to sit out because of an ankle roll. he will move on. second round action starts today. we'll see coco gauff and frances tiafoe, christopher eubanks all playing along with long time rivals. all of that action happening on espn. for now we head back to you guys in the studio. >> that's a lot of action right there behind you that we're going to be seeing.

>> we have an official land fall. category 3 hurricane. idalia is not slowing down. behind me on shore winds and from our drone we've been seeing coastal flooding up and down st. pete beach, clearwater definitely seeing impacts. we're keeping an eye on that throughout the day. the winds keep moving northeast. this thing has been racing. nearly 20 miles per hour. perry. we will see major power outages. we still have tornado warnings in place. south georgia down to orlando. you're still going to see these

tallahassee is covered in trees. many of these historic trees will be put to the test against idalia and near hurricane force winds once she makes her way through here, likely above 70 mile per hour winds. these are not palm trees. they do not bend, they break. with downed trees come downed power lines. as of last check 5,000 customers in leon county are without power. we are bracing for those numbers to go up. the good news for those in tallahassee, not expecting a direct hit. it is going to be a long and dangerous morning for those just southeast of us. guys? >> thanks to you, victor. again, we'll have continuing coverage throughout the morning. >> yes. but we turn now to the son of convicted murderer alex murdaugh speaking in a new interview about his father and the killings of his mother and brother. abc news chief national correspondent matt gutman is here with more. good morning, matt. >> good morning, rebecca. we've all been watching the story for so long. in that interview, buster murdaugh insists his father is

innocent and maintains that he lives in fear of the person who murdered his mother and brother, who he says is still at large. but when asked whether his father is a psycho path, buster said given his father's lies and manipulation, it was a fair assessment. this morning buster murdaugh speaking out for the first time since his father alex was convicted of murdering buster's mother and brother. >> i do not believe it was fair. >> reporter: the 26-year-old telling fox nation for an upcoming docu series, the fall of the house of murdaugh, he believes his father is innocent. >> did you ever go there and say, maybe it's possible that he did this? >> no, because i think that i hold a very unique perspective that nobody else in that courtroom ever held. and i know the love that i have witnessed. >> guilty. guilty. guilty. guilty. >> reporter: alex murdaugh was once a prominent south carolina soerpb was sentenced to two life sentences for the slayings of his wife maggie and their youngest son paul murdaugh in 2021.

through every step of this high profile murder case, buster standing by his father. alex smiling on as his only surviving son testified in his defense. even giving buster that pat. >> he was destroyed, heart broken. i walked in the door and saw him. gave him a hug. just broken down. >> reporter: maggie and paul murdaugh were shot to death on june 7th, 2021. their bodies were found at the dog kennels of the murdaugh's south carolina hunting estate. but alex claimed he was not at the scene. however, a key piece of evidence contradicted that. a snap chat video paul recorded moments before his death appeared to show him at the kennel with his father's voice appearing to be in the background. placing alex at the scene. >> did you go over to the kennels at all? >> no, i did not. people did tell me not to go down there. the crime scene had been like cut off.

based on everybody, sent everybody over to the house. >> reporter: a jury of 12 finding the murdaugh patriarch guilty in the slayings, but his son believes they were biased. >> i was there for six weeks studying it. i think it was a tilted table from the beginning. and i think, unfortunately, a lot of the jurors felt that way prior to when they had to deliberate. it was predetermined in their minds prior to when they ever heard any shred of evidence that was given in that room. >> reporter: after the trial, one of the jurors spoke exclusively with gma. >> if you really look at everything, it's all plain and clear. >> reporter: but while buster stands by his father, he acknowledges his shortcomings. >> do you ever worry, you know, am i like dad? >> no, i do not worry, because i not a thief. i am not a liar. i am not a manipulator. in those regards, i am nothing like him. but in other regards, i believe i hold some his more admirable traits, which i am quite proud

through here, she is going to bring some of these trees down, with near hurricane force winds topping 70 miles an hour. these are not palm trees. they do not bend, they break. power outages will be a problem here. 130,000 customers are already without power. that number is climbing here in leon county. more than 13,000. i checked in with local officials. they feel confidence they have the resources in place to clear the debris, because the roads will be a mess, and restore power. they are going to be very busy. first, idalia needs to clear out. this should go without saying, but at this point if you did not evacuate, now is not the time to do that. stay safe, stay indoors, hunker down. guys? >> important message from victor. so many people already without power. there are also several airports in florida that have been shut down due to the hurricane. trevor ault is at la guardia airport here in new york with the latest details on flight delays and cancellations. it's a busy morning there again. nice to see you, trevor.

>> reporter: good to see you, rebecca. we're already up over 800 flight cancellations nationwide so far. surprisingly the bulk of those are out of florida. those airports, tampa, st. petersburg, sarasota, they're all completely closed off. these flight cancellations often have domino effects across the country. airlines are monitoring this storm. they also want people to be wear of travel alerts and travel waivers if they wanted to reshuffle their schedule or maybe decide not to fly at all because it could be pretty chaotic. we can't forget, we're heading into a pretty busy travel weekend for the holiday this weekend. tsa will be screening more than 14 million passengers through the long labor day weekend. that's more than a 10% increase from this time last year. in fact, they say the stretch from memorial day up through this coming weekend is the single busiest summer stretch of travel we have ever seen. on top of dealing with the hurricane for the next day or so and beyond with the travel could be quite chaotic if you're going to an airport. guys? >> we all will keep that in mind. hard to believe it will be labor day weekend. seems like we just had memorial

president biden will mean lower health care costs for millions of american seniors. this for the first time as medicare being able to negotiate drug prices directly with pharmaceutical companies. the change came about because of the inflation reduction act which the president signed into law last year. the biden administration announced yesterday the list of the first ten prescription drugs that will be up for negotiations. nearly 9 million americans take at least one drug that is on that list right there. the white house says those seniors pay $3.4 billion out of pocket last year. negotiating prices could save the government about $98.5 billion over a decade. but it's not yet clear how much seniors will actually save. the white house told us yesterday that depends on the negotiations. gio? >> karen, when can we anticipate that this will go into effect? >> reporter: the negotiations get under way right away, and they'll continue into next year. but any prices for drugs negotiated won't go into effect january 1st, 2026.

here to break it down for us is dr. jennifer ashton. when people hear me say prescription. break this down for us. >> this is looking at produce prescriptions. it's not an actual prescription like we see for medication. what the american heart association was looking at is this concept of food as medicine. they did a six month study on people largely overweight and obese, largely suffering from food insecurity and actually gave them stipends coupons to get more fruits and vegetables. then they looked at their cardiometabolic risk factors. not a surprise, they ate more fruits and vegetables all the parameters in adults improved and they were less at risk -- they had less food insecurity. so it was a win win. as a doctor and nutritionist, not a surprise, but i love this study. >> i was going to say, among your many degrees, one in nutrition. how do we go about doing this? >> well, listen.

it's not just about eating more fruits and vegetables. it's also about avoiding the things that are not good for our health. there are tips for people who, you know, for whatever reason, whether it's financial or they did you have don't like them, want to get more. mix them in with other foods like eggs in your omlet, use them as snacks in place of the so called junk food or comfort food that so many of us reach for. blending them with smoothies. if you use ice water, milk or juice, that's a good way to get them. the american heart association recommending four servings a day for fruit, five for vegetables. majority of americans and children do not -- >> per day? >> per day. >> wow. grocery prices through the roof. >> that's a big issue. some tips for that, first of all, ask about the federal programs. again, buying those bruised kind of ugly fruits, you can save money there, too. >> always so good. we'll see you on gma3, jen. thank you very much. lara is there at the u.s. open for a special pop in news. lara?
