thank you for joining us. >> good afternoon we have team coverage on the heat today. we begin with abc7news meteorologist >> you can really feel it if you have been outside. let me show you those temperatures nearing 100° right now in fairfield at 99, 73 and half moon day. it is warm to hot across the region. the winds are out of the north, 20 miles an hour on hood mountain, it is a very dry wind you will noticed humidity. knoxville 14% which is why the fire danger remains elevated in parts of the north bay where a red flag warning is in effect until 8 p.m. tonight. any fires that develop will rapidly spread. the other big story is the air quality. notice parts of the north bay in the orange which is poor for sensitive groups and up around mendocino, we have read which is unhealthy. it is best if you can close your doors and windows and put your

ac on recirculate. look at how about a looks from our east bay hills camera. spare the air alert remains up-to-date due to smog and wildfire smoke from northern california and oregon and we do have an air quality advisory that has been extended through tomorrow. it is up today, tomorrow you are noticing moderate air quality across the bay area. we will have some changes in our wind which will bring an improvement in the air quality. i will let you know when coming up. >> pg&e is already turning off the power to thousands of customers to prevent wildfires. there is a psps warning for eight counties with napa being the only one in the bay area that would be affected. their electricity was turned off early this morning in several locations in northern california. >> as the meteorologist mentioned the air is really bad today prompting a spare the air alert due to high ozo lels and smoke from wildfires north. the website air n.gov is a great resource to find out the air qualy ere you live, red

indicates the worst air in the north air. where most of that wildfire smoke is. >> conditions are changing constantly because these fires of north, it is based on the containment and how much smoke it is putting out at any given time and also wind direction. it can change very rapidly. >> the alert ends at midnight. so far there is no air alert for tomorrow but in air quality advisory has been issued because of the wildfire smoke. >> now to sonoma county where the warmer weather is welcome, especially for winemakers. >> ryan curry was that today's wine harvest which was delayed due to heavy rains we saw in january. >> good afternoon winemakers have had to deal with several different patterns of weather throughout the last couple years, this year it is the rain from earlier this year that is causing issues, particularly with grapes. some are not ready to be picked because they are not ripe enough, but despite the delay in

the harvest they are still expecting to have some good wine. season on a day when temperatures in the north bay approached 100 degrees but this season is not about the hot and dry weather it is about the rain. this past winter is causing parts of the harvest to be delayed. >> we are in the chardonnay here this is our wendy clone. >> chris says these grapes need more time. >> i am looking for texture and grape size. we like to see some of these larger grapes coming in here and getting softer. >> the family operates this winery, they say the only ones harvesting our those making sparkling wine which usually starts in august. >> we have not started our harvest yet because we want more ripening of the grapes and some of our sparkling wine. producing neighbors here who are harvesting right now. >> is the 190 nine vintage. >> chris's wife robin is the director of the sonoma valley vent there is an growers line.

the cool start to the year delayed grapes from growing and expects the harvest to last into november. >> everybody is ready to get to work and also thinking how far into the holidays will be picking? >> despite the delay they are not expecting to follow, she says growers will still be employed in the fall helping pick grapes in the delay should not affect the quality of the wine. >> some of these late harvests have yielded incredible winds so historically speaking we are looking forward to matching that. >> they say the rain will actually benefit the valley in years to come. >> we are looking at the green it grape vines behind us, they are dependent on water. the more water the better, we have not really had that. >> hot few years. cool wet weather this year, asked them how they deal with these ongoing hurdles they have to jump through. they say it takes a team effort at every winery to be able to overcome these obstacles. when it comes to hot days like today they say their pickers

have to go out early in the morning before dawn to do it before the heat arrives. live in sonoma ryan curry abc7news. >> the heat could be an issue for concertgoers at levi's stadium tonight. the beyoncé concert starts at eight but people are already there and it is hot. we will have a look ahead to tonight in a few minutes. >> as part of our efforts to build a better bay area we have shown you problems and solutions to the homeless crisis but in san francisco that crisis could mean the city loses one of its biggest conferences. abc7news reporter in the newsroom now with a closer look. >> they have been having their conference dream force in san francisco since 2003, last year it brought 40,000 people to the city and generated $40 million in the downtown economy. all of that could potentially be gone. the future of next year's dream force conference, the biggest conference in san francisco could be in question because of

the homeless crisis. >> we need to work together to come up with solutions to ensure that this event is a success and that san francisco is a success. you can only achieve that if we employ common sense. >> on tuesday south for ceo mark told the chronicle if this dream force is impacted by the current situation with homelessness and drug use it may be the last dream force in the city. the comments in the wake of a court battle between san francisco and the coalition on homelessness on clearing homeless encampments. >> i think the comments unfortunately highlight how important it is for us to resolve this in a way that allows us to provide shelter and services but also maintain healthy and clean streets. we have to do this. everyone is suffering. >> exactly a week ago hundreds urged federal judges to move the injunction that is limiting san francisco, one of the federal judges challenge the definition of involuntary homeless and there seem to be in agreement.

>> they agreed of a person is offered shelter or has alternative access that the city ought to be able to enforce our laws against that individual. >> when the city tried to get that in writing this week the city attorney david shute said the coalition on homelessness backtracked. >> they would not commit to these things in writing so we had to inform the ninth circuit that the conversations were not fruitful and they are going to have to rule on these issues. >> one of the attorneys representing the coalition disagrees. >> no backtracking from the actual definition there are 4000 people outside right now because they do not have access to shelter. >> the coalition is standing firm saying the city does not have enough shelter to house everyone collects the city offers housing to someone who is on house and that person refuses to get housing. >> than they are permitted to be enforced against. right now that is what we are presenting to the ninth circuit. very few people are in that boat because the city is not actually making real offers of shelter. >> regarding what the city is

categorizing is backtracking by the coalition on homelessness san francisco's mayor london breed said she is alerted the courts and hopes they will issue a ruling in the city's favor. the dream force conference is scheduled for september 12 through the 14th. >> the effort to build more housing is an important part of building a better bay area, seven years ago in santa clara county there were only around 300 affordable housing units. now there is work in mountain view to put the county well 3000 units. today the cit kicked off the transforma of a hotel on el camino rialto affordable housing. abc7news's reporter dustin dorsey shows us the work being done. >> no vacancies at the crestview hotel in mountain view yet. when this transforms into affordable housing 49 units will open for those who need it most. >> these will soon be homes for transition and local youth who are aging out of foster care. we are also extending a helping

hand to individuals in small families who are currently experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homelessness -- homeless. >> there will be studio and one and two-bedroom units along with supportive services from jamboree housing. these units will help push santa clara county over 3000 total affordable housing units closer to their goal of 4800 built by 2026. >> the upheavals happened during a time when people were really scared about their future. the pandemic happened when people were scared about their lives and about how much rent they owed and this was a light of hope. >> county supervisor toward the work being done to convert these hotels rooms into living quarters. he says the best part is the speed at which it will be done because it can help people sooner. >> as you walk down the hall and look into these rooms you take a moment to imagine the folks are going to call this place home. to them it is going to be an

opportunity for a fresh start, get themselves squared away, get some help and services that are specific to what they need to what they need. >> jamboree housing president says there is not a homeless crisis there is a housing crisis. and when completed this form or a hotel it will alleviate the stress that crisis has caused so many families. >> when you look at the full spectrum of housing finding housing for extremely low individuals, folks earning 30% of the area medium income or below is the toughest to find and that is what we will be providing here. >> once the hardhat work is complete these 49 units will open in the summer 2024. in mountain view dustin dorsey abc7news. >> bay area congress member mark to saulnier is pushing for more federal funding after getting an up close look at some of the food insecurity issues in his district. he took part in a hunger roundtable at the food bank of contra costa and solano's today. that included a tour of the food

bank warehouse in concord. the congressman says he recognizes the need for new federal support as other funding starts to dry up. >> as we came out of covid and the federal funds that we democrats put in to get businesses and nonprofits and individuals through that crisis, now there is less money as we end that funding. it is a challenge. >> he is part of the educational labor committee and says another priority is reauthorizing funds for students to continue to receive free and reduced price meals at school. >> classes went on as scheduled at an oakland school a day after threats prompted police to shut down the campus. police patrolled the neighborhood around schiavo elementary in response to numerous threats. some of them at racially charged. this was the scene yesterday. officers searching the campus after emailed threats of a race war and -- a play date inclusion it prompted the threat. visitors visited the campus to lend support.

>> leary and karina it is hot right now in the mid-90's at levi's stadium. 4:30 as the gates open we are talking about 91 degrees for the concert later this evening. still going to be warm at 11 p.m. about 70 degrees for beyoncé's visit. as we take a look at live doppler 7 it is all quiet right now. a look at those wins. i do want to show you over the north bay still going to be easy at 5 p.m.. at two miles an hour the wind direction will come more out of the west later on and will drop off later on in the night. that will help in terms of reducing the fire danger but in terms -- until then the smoke will continue to impact the bay area going into tomorrow afternoon. look what happens tomorrow night by 10 or 11 p.m. that smoke gets pushed off the east by a stronger onshore wind. we will take it certainly hazy right now from our san rafael

camera, 78 degrees in san francisco we got up into the upper 80's oakland 84 right now san jose 94 and in palo alto it is 93 degrees. definitely a warm to hot day from our emeryville camera, a really smoky view as we look toward 80. it is 94 degrees in santa rosa and hundred in fairfield as we expected mid to upper 90's conquered in livermore. and the live view from our exploratorium camera seeing plenty of sun right now. high fire danger through this evening he uses tomorrow and it will still be hazy and smoky at least for the first half of the day but improvement later on. much cooler for later on friday isolated chance of showers, not just friday but into saturday. at 5 p.m. tonight inland areas are still going to be on the hot side. warm along the coast and by 8 p.m. those temperatures begin to slowly drop and by tomorrow morning you will notice a difference as the fog comes back into play. 50's or 60's at 8 a.m. going into the afternoon hours we will see a lot more cloud cover and

it is going to be a cooler one than where we were today. your morning temperatures will be in the 50's and 60's. it will be some fog near the coast and across parts of the bay as we look at the afternoon highs. the heat is coming and backing off a bit i should say. out of the triple digits will be in the low 90's for the warmest inland areas like fairfield, antioch, livermore. it will be most noticeable along the coast and bay, the temperature drop off as we check out what's ahead for the seven-day forecast. hazy tomorrow with heat easing and then we go from the 90's to 70's on friday. wendy with an isolated chance of a couple showers. nothing heavy-duty, if we get anything it could be drizzle or showers in the morning and then below average for the start of the holiday weekend. temperatures will come up by labor day into the 90's. >> at least we get that nice cooldown. >> we will be ready for it after today. >> dare we say a first dose of fall?

storm. hurricane dalia now moving out of florida after making landfall as a category three hurricane. >>idalia caused power outages for hundreds of thousands of people. our news reporter has been in the storm for a couple days now. >> yes here in tampa the worst of the hurricane has passed ■but not before leaving a trail of damage in some parts of the state. and now the storm is moving with hurricane strength onto georgia and the carolinas. >> along florida's big band as a category three. the storm ringing life-threatening storm surge and other catastrophic impacts among the states western coast. the national hurricane center says the storm briefly strengthened to a category four before weakening as it made landfall around 7:45 wednesday morning. that hurricane bringing with it

powerful winds clocking at 125 miles per hour. in perry florida at those strong winds snapping trees in half. in this video you can see collapsed fences and downed trees blocking roads. in tampa the storm surge causing all kinds of debris to wash up on the shoreline and in clearwater, the streets underwater. officials they are telling residents who ignored the mandatory evacuation to limit water use due to severe flooding that strained the storm water system. governor ron desantis confirming the storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands. >> utility workers are actively working to restore power in all affected areas. >> the storm battering the barrier island of cedar key, a resident who wrote out the storm they're estimating 50% of structures are underwater. >> it looks like our entire downtown commercial district is underwater. >> officials say residents there could see up to 13 feet of storm surge running that the danger is not over. >> from fallen trees, downed

power lines, standing water, you do not know what is in the water. >> this is the hurricane sets its sights on georgia and south carolina, face in their own threats of flash flooding and high winds. >> the impacts of the storm are being felt throughout the southeast, several teams on the ground are going to continue to work with the first responders in florida, georgia, south carolina, north carolina, to get people to safety. >> tam is open for arrivals only but officials say the full-service should come back around 3 a.m. on thursday. as of now, governor ron desantis says there have been no confirmed fatalities. back to you. >> thank you for reporting live. >> let's check in with abc seven news meteorologist, your time -- tracking the hurricane as well so where is it? >> it is 115 miles southwest of charleston south carolina. as we take a look at live doppler 7 you will notice the

bands of rain moving into the carolina -- carolinas at this hour. it has caused damage as i just mentioned and there have been hundreds of reports. everything from flooding to funnel clouds to heavy rain. as we take a look at is a tropical storm packing winds of 70 miles an hour. it is moving rapidly to the northeast at 21 miles an hour. tomorrow at 11 a.m. it is expected to make its turn. right near charleston at 11 a.m. and then continuing to move outward over the open atlantic. the concerns are still flooding, the strong winds and the storm surge. i will be back with a look at your local forecast coming up. staffers for senate minority leader mitch mcconnell are now offering an explanation after the 81-year-old froze while speaking with reporters in his home state of kentucky. >> i am sorry i had a hard time hearing you. >> what are your thoughts on running for reelection? >> what are my thoughts about what? >> running for reelection.

really cool like 60 to 67 degrees but a new study says that 68 to 77 might be best especially if you are over 50. 77 it seems pretty warm but slightly warmer temperatures can lead to better sleep efficiency. it is all about preference. i have always heard that cooler temperatures lead to better sleep efficiency. i am always cold no matter what so i want a little warmer but what about you guys? >> i think 70 degrees is ideal. that is what i think. >> yes around there, i like it a little cooler because i don't want to get too hot. it also depends on what you wear when you sleep or don't wear. i don't know. i think 68. i read a lot of studies said cooler temperatures are better to sleep and so i started trying that and now i am use to it so i think a good 68 works for me. >> really? you are not freezing cold. i guess that is pretty reasonable.
