florida after daybreak this morning and continues to do damage in the carolinas tonight. the full extent is not clear, but what is, mother nature had her way once again. our team is spread out. maria villarreal. >> reporter: cedar key thrives on tourism but it was all swept away. the winds were so powerful it knocked over a gas station canopy, the storm surge knocking out the city. once it receded, the business owners got the first look at the destruction. the amount of surge evident by the debris. this is a cement flooring from the business behind me. owners believe this is an absolute loss for them. even when the power gets turned back on, there is no guarantee anybody will return because there's no place so statement a hit on their economy and

livelihood. byron. >> thank you. hundreds of thousands remain without electricity in the wake of idalia, including in tallahassee where victor oquendo is. >> reporter: here in tallahassee, the race is on to restore power. the biggest concerns for the city, wind damage, downed trees and power outages. despite spared the brunt of idalia, we got a combination of all three. we drove around and spotted crews that were working with a tree that took down lines. next to them, a bucket truck. outside the governor's mansion, first lady desantis posted this photo, it was a 100-year-old oak tree brought down. she was inside with her children, nobody was hurt. we've been tracking the number of customers without power and

they've been dropping by the hour. byron. >> residents in more than 20 florida counties were ordered to evacuate. many heeded the warnings but some made the risky decision to hunker down. catastrophic storm surge up and down the florida coast up to 7 feet. hurricane idalia flooding downtowns, leaving homes destroyed. idalia is the first major hurricane to hit this part of florida's big bend on record. >> no! >> reporter: now thousands returning home to see whether their homes and businesses survived. like shannon and jordan who rode out the storm inland with family. long time residents of cedar key, one of the hardest hit areas. >> there's still no power, sewer, water. nothing. my house is fine, no issues

here. my restaurant is another story. quite a bit of damage there. the deck around the building is gone, missing windows and doors. >> reporter: they owned one of the most popular restaurants on the island, 83 west. >> it's terrifying to me i wasn't able to see the cameras at the restaurant. looking at possibly eight years of efforts gone down the -- gone down. >> reporter: this wasn't their first hurricane. in 2016, a hurricane hit their restaurant for $750,000 in damages according to jordan. >> the problem with being over the water, it's uninsurable, as all the restaurants on dock street. they won't get help from insurance or fema, everybody is on their own. >> reporter: they rebuilt the restaurant out of pocket because he says they can't get insurance. now they have to go through it again. he hopes to reopen in three

weeks. >> we're going to go through it again. this area is not prone to a ton of hurricanes, probably one every ten years but seems more frequent now. >> reporter: the oceans averaging 88 degrees fuelled idalia, increasing its speed as it approached land. >> if there's anything the states need right now, i'm ready to mobilize that support that they need. >> reporter: many evacuated, some decided to stay put, including residents in hudson, florida, who were stunned how fast the water came in. >> before i knew it, it was over the wall, trying to get in the truck, came over the wall, never seen nothing like it. >> never seen this before. had a hurricane here, but it's never flooded to this extent. >> reporter: just up the coast in steinhatchee, the family was

split whether or not to evacuate, she evacuated with her husband. >> we evacuated because nine months pregnant, in and out of labor all day with contractions. >> reporter: her brother and the rest of the family stayed home to watch over the family business, the sea hag marina. >> we're more scared for the marina than our safety. we do have a lot of damages that happened to everything else but could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: the family has owned the marina for 24 years. normally it's sunny and filled with fishermen and lodgers enjoying the views. >> one of the biggest on the west coast of florida, one of my parents' babies, it's like their child is in danger. >> reporter: but today much was hit with major storm surge leaving debris and damage in its wake. >> a few hours ago it looked like -- like a crazy place.

wind blowing sideways. trees going sideways. it was real. but now it's bright and sunny here. >> reporter: despite the damage, the norwood family focused on the newest member to be born. >> people around the town, one big family, everybody knows each other and knows baby boy. >> reporter: but others in the path of the storm from georgia to south carolina are dealing with the remnants of idalia. as the storm exited florida and tracked north and east, it continued to cause flooding and became a tornado threat. abc's alex presha has more. >> reporter: the number one thing that charleston is facing is flooding. idalia mixed with high tides have flooded roadways and parking lots. the national weather service

says the water has reached the battery and the dunes. wind, downed trees and power lines, all throughout the day, tornadic activity. one tornado picked up a car. customers were without power, at our hotel it went out for an hour before the generators kicked on. that's why the mayor has urged residents to hunker down, not put first responders at risk. byron. >> thank you. there will be much more on the storm overnight and on in the morning. next, my conversation with little mike and funny bone. ♪ ♪ ♪ party all night till we see

>> humanized indigenous people and helped others relate to the community. a lot of people are just ignorant and think native americans get big checks all the time and live on nice reservations, but when you look into it, it's pretty rough. >> reporter: centuries of disenfranchisement led to economic depression for the community. 20% of the american indian and alaska native population in the u.s. live at the poverty level. face higher rates of substance abuse, suicide and violence. growing up, violence and poverty were present in their home, sent mike down a dark path. by the time he was 18 he had been arrested 12 times. why didn't those experiences break you? >> i think it did break me but it broke me to changing point, not into shutting down point. >> reporter: music was the brothers' salvation.

they discovered christian hip-hop and found their voice. they acknowledge how christianity was used as a tool for genocide in native american communities but they believe they can hold on to their heritage and stand firm in faith. people may look at your native american heritage in an odd way in the christian world and in the native american world look at christian faith in a different way. how do you balance it? >> there are a lot of bitter indigenous folks bitter about what the colonists did to the natives. we break it down, it's not god. if you're religion allows you to hate and hurt people you're doing it wrong. flat-out. >> reporter: the values influence their music. >> we don't drink, smoke. >> we're celibate, surprises

people as rappers. >> reporter: music brought them purpose, mental health struggles weren't far behind. when mike was young he attempted to end his life. >> i think i tried it three times. >> you tried it? only time i've seen the smile leave your face in the entire conversation is when your brother talked about hurting himself. >> yeah. i didn't try it, but i went through the same thoughts. i got real close. >> why? >> i just felt like life wasn't going as fast as i wanted it to. i really got low, tired of putting in all the work and not seeing the results i wanted. >> reporter: the brothers say a combination of grace and grit helped them persevere. now they're touring nationwide in venues big and small. here at a hotel owned by the cherokee nation. >> usually we chill out before we go out. because then you got to put on the persona like hey, what's up.
