wildfire smoke from northern california and the oregon border continues to impact us. i have good news for you. we will start to notice the smoke shifting out of here. i will be back to let you know when, coming right up. ama: the smoky air was the talk all over the bay area today. with that air quality advisory sticking with us tomorrow, lena howland went out to see how people are handling the haze. reporter: our video from above san francisco wednesday, clouded by smoke. >> what a beautiful city when it's not smoky. reporter: a similar view from emeryville where the smoke was so thick, you couldn't see the golden gate bridge. james out of las vegas says it's a night and day difference compared to his last visit earlier this month. >> two weeks ago, it was such a beautiful day. gorgeous. you could see everything. alcatraz. golden gate. now you can't see anything. reporter: the bay area air

district issued a spare the air alert for wednesday. >> we believe ozone will be at on healthy levels and there's another thing going on which is that we've been getting smoke from the fires that are happening in northern california. some of that is filtering down to us as well. reporter: the smith river complex fire which has ballooned to nearly 80,000 acres. >> with a wildfire, even though it's happening hundreds of miles away, the wind can carry it into the bay area. reporter: michael, a public health professor, says the monitors are edging up to the unhealthy. those with underlying health conditions will feel the effects of the smoke more than the general public. >> it may be warranted that you reduce your outdoor activities, stay inside, have the windows closed. if you have an air filter or an air conditioner, start running

those in the evening. reporter: we found no shortage of people getting outdoors, taking in the hazy views. >> i hope it gets better. i feel like today was the worst day. it wasn't this bad yesterday. reporter: the smoke is expected to clear. the bay area could be in luck by the weekend. >> we do expect that as of tomorrow evening, those impacts are going to be less. the smoke gets pushed more toward the east and away from the bay area. that should continue throughout the weekend. reporter: lena howland, abc7news. dan: deliberate power shutoffs from pg&e tonight. the utility proactively turned off power to thousands of customers today to prevent wildfires fr sparking. you can see ther's just one purple triangle indicating 130 customers -- 130,000 customers who still have their power turned off.

would this time of year if there were no big names like beyonce in the city. dan: the beyonce bump is extending to black, brown, women-owned businesses as well of those that are lgbtq+ friendly. the renaissance album has many odes to the queer community and ballroom drag performances as well. ama: it's our focus every day here, finding places of progress in our work to build a better bay area. we are taking you through some of those breakthroughs. our first has to do with one of san francisco's longest and most visible issues, homelessness. it could affect the future of one of the city's biggest conferences, dream force. the sales ceo told the chronicle that it could be the last dream force held in the city. there is currently a fight in court over the legality of claiming homeless and cabins in the city. the san francisco city attorney as part of that push. >> i think his comments

unfortunately highlight how important it is for us to resolve this injunction in a way that allows us to provide shelter and services but also maintain healthy and clean streets. we have to do this. everyone is suffering. ama: it runs through help is on the way in san francisco. in affordable housing site will officially open on no e street. the mayor along with other city officials will be on hand. we know the housing crisis is intraspecific to san francisco so our second breakthrough took us to santa clara county. there were only 300 affordable housing units seven years ago. now there's work to push the county well over 3000 units. the city began transforming the hotel into affordable housing. once the progress is done, 49 units will open for those who need it most. the old hotel will provide homes for single residents and small

vallejo police for more than two years. tomorrow, his family and attorney will call on the attorney general to hold the officer accountable. he shot and killed sean montero set in june of 2020 from the backseat of an unmarked police car. the officer had been terminated but was just reinstated to the vallejo police department earlier this week. the abc7news i-team received a statement from the attorney general's office that reads in part, our review in this case is ongoing. we owe it to the family and community to ensure that cases involving the loss of human life are done right and supported by a thorough, fair, and comprehensive investigation. ama: hurricane idalia some of its punch as a tropical storm but has left its mark on the southeast. let's take a look from south carolina where idalia put down a tornado where trout -- near charleston. take a look at this video, taken

in goose creek, south carolina. wow. a tornado spawned by idalia flipped over a car, injuring one person. the hurricane is blamed for two deaths, both of those in florida. the storm roared ashore with winds topping out at 125 miles per hour, the big bend region of the state where the panhandle meets the peninsula. one family barely escaped. >> the top of the roof caved in on my three kids my grandson. my daughter is pregnant so she was laying on the side of the bed. i was able to pull her out of it. ama: so scary. the storm brought down this huge oak tree at the governors mansion. ron desantis and his family were home at the time but not injured. dan: staffers for mitch mcconnell are offering an excellent nation tonight after the 81-year-old froze up while
