>> good morning to you. i'm morgan norwood in for rhiannon and we begin with the remnants of hurricane idalia triggering historic flooding in parts of the carolinas overnight. >> at least three deaths are blamed on the storm, two in florida and one in georgia. the scope of the destruction, ian now coming into focus as we see new video of the flooding and the homes reduced to ruin. the lives upended. we have images all the way from the gulf coast to charleston this morning. abc's m wynne begins our coverage. she's in saint petersburg. good morning. m good morning, andrew. >> yeah. dalia continues to move up the east coast. it had drawn strength from the warm waters of the gulf of mexico to unleash torrential downpours and damaging winds as overnight idalia hammering south carolina and georgia after wreaking havoc on the big bend of florida. storm surge inundating charleston. the waters breaching the seawall and flooding the city's historic downtown on market street, under water. the

tide level at charleston harbor peaking at over nine feet. the fifth highest on record. the supermoon helping fuel the high tide. idalia spawning multiple tornadoes nearby. this terrifying moment caught on camera. a twister tossing this car into the air. horrifying what the. the storm taking off the roof of this veterinary hospital in north carolina down in georgia. no major flooding in savannah, but strong winds downing trees. more than 160,000 power outages reported in the state last night. but in florida , the devastation far more extensive a 125 mile per hour winds slamming the city of perry , knocking down this gas station. the powerful gusts slicing through trees and stop signs. mcdonald's golden arches no match for dahlia's fury throughout the city. roofs caving in or ripped off entirely

expected to move out to sea. this afternoon. andrew. and thank you. >> we're following breaking news overseas. at least 73 people have now died after a fire spread through this five story building in johannesburg, south africa. dozens of others were injured. the building served as a shelter for homeless people. no word yet on what caused the fire. >> we turn now to washington and the health of senator mitch mcconnell. after another appearance before the media, which is now fueling speculation about his medical condition and raising more questions about the age of politicians on both sides of the aisle. this morning, new concerns about the health of top senate republican mitch mcconnell. the 81 year old freezing up, seemingly unable to speak as he took questions from the media. >> what are your thoughts on running for reelection in 2026? >> what are my thoughts about what running for reelection in 2026? that's.

speculation about his health. >> i haven't examined him and i don't have any background on this except i've talked to some people in congress and in the senate would be parkinson's disease, because that in its later stages can give you a freeze. and it can also explain why no one around him in these freezers is panicking and saying this could be a stroke, this could be a seizure. >> mcconnell is not the only politician who's age is raising concern. 90 year old california senator dianne feinstein recently appeared confused during a vote. >> just say i. >> okay, just. >> hi. >> thank you. and a new book about 80 year old president biden by atlantic staff writer franklin foer claims biden in private would occasionally admit that he felt tired. and the white house yesterday dismissed speculation surrounding the book . in a recent poll, 77% of people surveyed said they believe biden is too old to serve another term. a majority said the same thing about donald trump. a separate poll also found about two thirds of americans support age limits for

politicians. a judge is holding rudy giuliani liable for defaming two georgia election workers by repeatedly accusing them of stealing ballots. >> ruby freeman and her daughter, shaye moss, say giuliani's false claims after the 2020 election ruined their lives. a jury will now decide how much giuliani will have to pay them. >> the family of a pregnant woman shot and killed by police near columbus, ohio, last week is demanding answers as police say they'll release the body camera video by tomorrow after the family of 21 year old takaya young has had a chance to view it. officers say young stole alcohol from a grocery store, then drove toward an officer who tried to stop her. >> it's just it's just messed because it just was tragic. and it should have never, ever, ever happened. and she just turned 21 this month. >> the family's lawyer says a witness claims young was not shoplifting. >> in the busy labor day weekend travel rush is nearly upon us and now we're hearing from people on a delta flight shaken

up by severe turbulence. they're not alone. more planes are hitting turbulence. some researchers blame climate change . it's the latest case of severe turbulence for air travelers. 14 people injured on this delta flight to atlanta from milan, italy. >> we're going to have some paramedics coming on board to handle any issues in the back. >> passengers tossed through the cabin just minutes before landing. >> i honestly thought we were crashing. >> one passenger appeared to suffer a head injury, some taken off the plane on stretchers and the woman in the aisle next to me flew up and hit the overhead in everyone's stuff. >> kind of just flew out of the seats. >> faa data shows an increase in turbulence related injuries and a recent british study found a 55% increase in recent decades of severe clear air turbulence on a north atlantic route. researchers citing climate change as a factor, attributing changes in wind speed to warmer air. our aviation expert has this takeaway for travelers.

under $55,000 a year, up from 35,000. critics say the plan will only increase the burden on businesses. the proposal all now faces a public comment period. credit card fees are reportedly going up. the wall street journal says visa and mastercard will soon charge businesses more . when you use your credit card increase fees are usually passed on to consumers. >> as we turn now to new concerns about quality control when it comes to baby formula, after a major shortage last year , the fda is revealing the results of recent inspections. here's abc's lionel moise this morning. >> the fda has sent warning letters to three of the top infant formula makers over quality control concerns. cronobacter sakazakii a major issue in the letter sent to reckitt mead johnson, perrigo and by heart. while cronobacter is widely found in the environment, it could be deadly in infants. that same bacteria prompted abbott to shut down its facility in michigan last year,

leading to a nationwide formula shortage. the fda inspecting that plant last year, finding, quote, egregiously unsanitary conditions before the company addressed the concerns back area growing from multiple sites and many signs of a disappointing lack of attention to the culture of safety in this product that is so essential to the lives of our most precious people. four infants were infected and two died. although abbott maintained there was no evidence to prove its formula. got the infant sick . and now, in the new letter sent yesterday, investigators say they found significant violations inside facilities during inspections dating back to late last year, including finished formula product that tested positive for cronobacter for reckitt mead johnson investigators described multiple water leaks and standing piles of spilled infant product formula, wet conditions and cracks are favorable for the growth of cronobacter and in the

letter to perrigo, the fda said cronobacter was found in finished formula. cronobacter was also allegedly found in beard's finished formula. but here's the good news. the fda says products currently on the market are safe thanks to previous recalls, which the fda says were effective. but regulators want further action to prevent contaminate in the future. the companies have been given 15 days to respond to the warning letters. the fda says although the three companies have taken corrective action when more is needed. andrew morgan lionel, thank you. >> coming up, 5 million angry bees escape after an accident. >> also ahead, we hear from the family of a woman who survived a rare shark attack here in new york

think any of us have ever seen anything like that. >> the crates came loose near dave lloyd's house. many of the bees seeking refuge on his mailbox. >> when i woke up to my wife saying, there's something going on outside, there's all kinds of bees or something, it's crazy. yeah, everybody's been texting us all morning. is that in front of your house? yeah >> police calling in the experts says it's typically never good news when you get a call from the police and i'm just glad, like, you know, obviously, no humans were hurt in this situation. even some of the beekeepers were stung. most of the bees were eventually recovered, but local beekeeper luke peters says several thousand did fly away. the keepers placed a crate near where they fell off the truck, hoping the bees that buzzed off will find their way back home. >> they communicate by by smell , all by by sight and all that. so they they will start to communicate in those ways and figure out their their way home. so hopefully sooner rather than later, even if those bees don't
