we have a lot of news, starting with idalia, now a tropical storm moving north this morning after roaring ashore as a category 3 hurricane, the strongest on record to make landfall in that part of florida's thick band. >> take a look at the satellite showing where the storm is right now as it moves through the carolinas. we have team coverage beginning in charleston, south carolina, which is seeing severe flooding. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, eva. take a look at this. much of the water has receded but this is what's left of the flooding. last night this water covered the entire parking lot here. we still see some tree branches down. all this as charleston cleans up this morning. overnight tropical storm idalia slamming into south carolina. creating a storm surge reaching the charleston battery. massive flooding combined with 65 mile an hour winds resulting in life threatening conditions

from charleston to myrtle beach. watch as a tornado in goose creek sends this car airborne. >> that car is flying! what the -- >> reporter: we spoke with the driver, who escaped with minor injuries. >> it was just a crazy turn of events. i'm just on my way home and all of a sudden there was a gust of wind and my car started to shake and all of a sudden i know i'm in the air. i closed my eyes and just prayed that i'd make it out of this. >> reporter: officials urging residents to stay off the roads. much of the state in complete darkness. downed trees and power lines littering neighborhoods. around high tide last night some 34,000 customers where were without pore. we were one of them. the power at our hotel going out. city officials this morning grateful that people listened to their advice and stayed home. demarco. >> that is good to know. alex, thank you. let's check in with rob marciano

who is in savannah, georgia, pummelled by storm surge and heavy rain. rob, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, demarco. we're now on the back side of this storm as it moves into north carolina and virginia. but georgia seeing a lot of debris and tree damage. 60 mile an hour winds across this state, taking down trees old sweet gums like this one. spanish moss still on it. thankfully missing homes and cars, but blocking this road. all the unfortunate hall mark of this fast moving storm. this morning idalia wreaking havoc across the southeast. a path of destruction from florida to the carolinas. so far at least three weather related deaths. widespread damage blanketing the area. mireya villarreal in cedar key. >> look inside this business right here. the actual cement floor ended up on the street, feet away. >> reporter: idalia making landfall around 7:45 wednesday

morning, whipping up nearly 125 mile per hour winds. the eye wall slamming ashore in perry, tearing down buildings. snapping trees like twigs and submerging entire neighborhoods. in florida's big bend region just east of the panhandle, storm surge reaching a record 6.8 feet. >> my biggest concern is those people who chose not to evacuate. >> reporter: overnight more than 250,000 customers still without power across the region. idalia now a tropical storm. >> right now we're in recovery mode so we're doing damage assessments and we're deploying pods to the communities that need the supply, water and food and other essentials. >> reporter: michael bobbitt endured the hurricane's force in the 117-year-old home he rebuilt. >> the thought of a hurricane, you know, it's not that big a deal normally. soon as dawn started to break and we could see the storm surge rushing in from three different sides, it looked like the gulf was gonna just swallow up our entire street.

>> reporter: drone shot shows sun coming up over the low country of georgia. as well, another high tide cycle along the savannah river. but we are done with this storm. so good to see the sunshine today. but government offices and schools are closed so they can begin the cleanup process here in georgia. rebecca? >> so good to see that sun out, rob. as you say, a long road ahead. thank you. we go now to ginger who is in treasure island, florida, tracking the path of idalia and when we'll finally be rid of this storm. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: morning to you, rebecca. two to four feet of storm surge, took the beach, pushed this into the parking lot on to gulf boulevard. even this picnic table shows you how deep the sand was displayed. look at the drone. you can see how sand just goes everywhere. we were so far from the center of the storm. now that storm is still torturing north carolina. we've got video there from north top sail beach. you can see where that on shore

flow is still impacting them. big time rain. we saw anywhere from 6 to 10 inches. that verified in a lot of places, from georgia down through florida and south carolina. flash flood warnings still up this morning. tropical storm warnings to the virginia state line. we'll keep the push of water against the shore. that's going to be that surge that can plug up those bays. newborn, remember they flooded so badly back in florence that inland rain, it won't be as bad, but we don't want to torture anyone any longer. by this afternoon we say good-bye to idalia as it pulls out into the atlantic. could impact bermuda. >> ginger there. i know they're happy to see that storm going off shore. thank you very much. now to questions about mitch mcconnell's health after the senate minority leader appeared to freeze at a press conference yesterday, just weeks after a similar episode. our senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: eva, good morning to you. this is the second time in just over a month that senate

minority leader mitch mcconnell appeared to freeze in front of the cameras. it is prompting fresh concerns and questions about his health and future in the senate. this morning the senate's top republican, mitch mcconnell, appearing to freeze in front of cameras, trailing off and staring ahead for more than 30 seconds. >> what are your thoughts on running for re-election in 2026? >> what are my thoughts -- >> running for re-election in 2026. >> that's a -- >> did you hear the question, senator? running for re-election in 2026? >> yes. >> all right. i'm sorry, you all. we're gonna need a minute. senator. >> do you want to head outside? come with us. >> reporter: mcconnell was

eventually able to answer a few questions before leaving, but the incident was similar to this one in late july, when mcconnell appeared to freeze midsentence during a press conference on capitol hill. >> there's been good bipartisan cooperation and a string of -- >> reporter: mcconnell's office saying after both incidents the senator felt light headed but his health has been in the spot light after he fell in march, suffering a concussion and fractured rib. then july, a separate fall on a bridge. and sources adding that he started using a wheelchair at times to get around. both democrats and republicans wishing mcconnell well. >> we've had disagreements politically, but he's a good friend. >> reporter: across the aisle, democratic diane feinstein facing questions about her health. at 90, she is the oldest person in the senate, briefly hospitalized later this month after tripping over a chair and recently appearing confused at a senate committee meeting.

mcconnell's office insist he is feeling fine, that he would see a doctor before his next event. he did speak to several republicans by phone, even attended a fund-raiser. he's expected to return back to washington next week when the senate comes back to recess. eva? >> that video, though, hard to watch. dr. jennifer ashton joins us in our next half hour with more on this. demarco? now to more legal trouble for rudy giuliani. a judge found him liable for defaming two georgia election workers who sued him for making false charges about their handling of the ballots. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky has the latest. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning to you, demarco. the things that rudy giuliani said about those two poll workers were not true, but the consequences to their lies were very real. now rudy giuliani must pay. this morning rudy giuliani is waiting to see what a jury will make him pay to ruby freeman and shay moss, two georgia poll workers he falsely accused of stealing ballots.

>> ruby freeman and shay freeman moss and one other gentlemen quite obviously passing around u.s. ports as if they're vials of heroin or cocaine. >> reporter: the women testifying before the january 6th committee. >> what was your mom handing you? >> a ginger mint. >> reporter: moss and freeman said giuliani unleashed a wave of hey hatred and threats we never could have imagined. >> a lot of threats. wishing death upon me. telling me that, you know, i'll be in jail with my mother and saying things like, be glad it's 2020 and not 1920. >> reporter: giuliani conceded his statements about moss and freeman were false, although he insists they were allowed under the first amendment. a federal judge finding giuliani liable for defamation intentional inflexion of emotional distress, civil conspiracy and punitive damage

entering a default judgment because giuliani failed to turn over evidence. only what the judge called blobs of indecipherable data. giuliani called the decision a prime example of a weaponized justice system. the judge has already ordered giuliani to cover $90,000 in legal costs, another $100,000 plus in fines and now it will be up to a jury to decide what else he owes the two women in damages for what they call their living night mare. rebecca? >> okay, aaron. thank you. we turn now to breaking news this morning. a deadly building fire erupting in south africa, killing dozens of people. james long man joins us with what we know. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. this is truly awful. authorities are calling it a tragedy of monumental proportions. the search and rescue operation is under way inside a multistory building which caught fire overnight in johannesburg, south africa. 70 people are known to have died but emergency services are warning that number could rise

as the search continues. a police spokesman have said emergency services have come across multiple obstacles as they've made their way up through the building. that would have made escaping it very difficult. it's being called an informal settlement and many homeless were using it for shelter during the winner months. at least seven of those dead are children. this is a place where entire families with nowhere to go would sleep. we don't know yet what started this fire. eva? >> thank you, james. turning to the holiday travel crunch set to get under way this afternoon as people get a jump on the labor day weekend. we have coverage of the roads and the skies beginning with alex perez in chicago. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, eva. the increase in passengers for the holiday weekend, combined with the lingering effects of hurricane idalia could make travel tough, depending on where you're going. already this morning we are seeing more than 400 flights delayed and more than 150 cancelled. tampa international, which closed as the hurricane approached, resumed normal

operations today. in fact, about half dozen major florida airports impacted by this storm are now operating normally. those traveling to and through georgia and the carolinas are still being told to brace for possible delays there. adding to all this, southwest pilots and united flight attendants are expected to picket today as they negotiate labor agreements. american airlines attendants already voted for a strike. but because oven strict federal regulations, votes for a strike do not mean a strike is eminent and will not impact travel. now, if you're flying this holiday weekend, friday and monday are expected to be the busiest days. eva? >> alex perez, thank you. now to the roads, which are expected to start filling up this afternoon. erielle reshef is in new york. >> travel by car is the preferred method of transportation according to aaa. more people expected to hit the roads than last year. the good news for drivers is gas prices appear to be levelling off just a bit.

the national average hovering about $3.82 per gallon. the busiest time to travel for the holiday is today between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. tomorrow between 11:00 a.m. and 9 p.m. you may also hit some travel. so experts say the best time to travel this weekend is before 7 a.m. or after 8 p.m. so you may need extra coffee no matter what. >> that's the best advice. thank you very much. now to the u.s. open, where many of america's hottest young tennis stars are shining bright. coco gauff and frances tiafoe are leading the way with big wins at arthur ashe stadium. will reeve is there with the high lights. good morning to you, will. >> reporter: good morning, demarco. day 4 of the u.s. open will get under way shortly. let's take a look back date 3, which saw 73,000 people come here. that's a single day record. and the catch all theme for the list of big names i'm about to run down, light work. coco gauff, novak djokovic, frances tiafoe all easily into the next round.

idalia, now a tropical storm and on the move, bringing heavy rain to the carolinas and devastating parts of the gulf coast. ginger is in treasure island, florida, tracking the path. nice to see you again. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, rebecca. they opened the bridges last night. we've seen people walking by, assessing damage like this where the roots are so exposed, homes took on water. sand up to the garages. our drone really shows you a lot of the impacts on these barrier islands. it is going to take time to recover. this is nothing compared to what happened further north and up in georgia, south carolina. this morning still north carolina. this morning coastal south carolina reeling from tropical storm idalia. the storm breaching the charleston battery. widespread flooding plus 65 mile per hour winds making some roads impassable. watch as this tornado in goose creek flips this car. the driver surviving with minor injuries.

>> all of a sudden this gust of wind and my car started to shake. then i'm in the air. i closed my eyes and just prayed that i'd make it out of this. >> reporter: in perry, florida, near where idalia made landfall as a category 3 hurricane with max sustained winds of 125 miles per hour, officials are still assessing the scope of the devastation. neighborhoods submerged, buildings levelled. here in treasure island, i witnessed idalia transform the coast line. even though idalia was more than 100 miles away at landfall, it pushed water right up and over here. this was a dune but it breached. and you can see it brought sand all the way onto gulf boulevard and allowed the water right into those homes. in florida's big bend region, cedar key, with storm surge at a record, nearly 7 feet. >> my biggest concern is those people who chose not to evacuate. >> reporter: so idalia is still a tropical storm. it will stay that way as it hugs the coast of north carolina. you can see all the warnings are

up through the virginia state line. still have heavy rain. we did have 6 to 10 inches and a wide swath across many states. combined with that surge, it will be a problem through the next couple of hours. we will say good-bye eventually to idalia by this afternoon. guys? >> ginger, thank you. turning now to an alert for parents. the fda has sent a letter to three baby formula companies citing contamination concerns. erielle is back with tkwe details. >> it has been a year since a factory was shut down triggering a nationwide shortages. investigators say they found significant violations inside the buy hart, meade johnson and perigot facilities. citing all three for failing to establish good quality control systems intended to guard against potential bacterial contamination.

we're talking about the same bacteria that prompted abbott to voluntarily shut down its facility in michigan last year after four infants were infected and two died. although abbott has maintained that there was no evidence to prove that its formulas were actually what made the infant sick. the new letters mandate the companies commit to extensive cleaning measures and re-evaluate their internal sanitation policies. the companies have 15 days to respond. perigot issuing statement saying they are in the process of carefully reviewing the fda's letter and plan to work closely with the agency and the fda said the three companies have taken krebgive action and that its products on shore shelves are safe thanks to peripherals. demarco? >> erielle, thank you very much. we appreciate it. now to more on mitch mcconnell, who appeared to freeze up while speaking to reporters in kentucky. this is now the second episode for the 81-year-old senate minority leader in recent weeks. abc news chief medical correspondent dr. jen joins us with more on

this story. we don't know exactly what happened and whether or not it was age related, but brings the question, what are natural or normal signs of ageing? >> i think that's a common question. let's go through what's normal and what's not normal with aging. obviously, this varies person to person. there's a spectrum. things like getting tired more quickly during the day, loss of muscle mass and strength, which is called age related sarcopinia which you can combat, i might all very common, add. slight issues with memory. forgetting a name once in awhile. all those things are common. we're seeing more examples of incredible longevity and vitality in popular culture these days. we just heard about bob barker, betty white, queen elizabeth, iris apple who just celebrated her 102nd birthday. it is possible to work and be in good shape as we get older. it's just not as common as we might think. >> what about those who aren't aging? could this be a serious sign as to what happened?

this is one of those scenarios that every passenger hopes never ever happens to them. this flight was about to land when suddenly things went wrong. this morning a look at the frightening moments on board an international delta flight shortly before landing. the flight from milan was minutes from landing in atlanta when passengers say they felt the plane take a dramatic drop. >> i honestly thought we were crashing. >> reporter: one passenger capturing the horrifying scene. one passenger appears to be nursing a head injury with an ice pack. others had to be taken off the flight by medical personnel on stretchers. >> the woman in the aisle next to me flew up and hit the overhead bins. everyone's stuff just kind of flew out of the seats. >> we have some paramedics coming on board to handle any issues in the back. >> reporter: 14, including crew and passengers injured, 11 hospitalized. in statement, delta says its priority is taking care of those

injured and thanked the first responders who met the aircraft and provided medical attention. faa data shows an uptick in serious turbulence related injuries, hospitalizing at least 17 people last year. some experts pointing to climate change for the increase in incidents. a recent study found severe clear air turbulence which occurs without a visual warning like clouds or thunderstorms has increased more than 50% over the last 40 years due to changing temperatures. just this week video shows passengers screaming as a plane attempted to land in spain. that flight forced to return to the airport due to bad weather. >> every now an then, very very rare, but when it does occur, if people aren't in their seats they will be thrown all over the cabin in severe turbulence. >> reporter: and planes, experts say, are made to withstand traveling through turbulence, but incidents like these are the exact reasons why they say you

should always have your seat belt on throughout the whole flight. guys? >> all right. fasten up. a good reminder for all of us. >> yes. now to new york city's first shark attack victim since the 1950s. her family sharing new details about the ordeal. trevor ault sat down with her daughter. good morning, trevor. >> this is an incredible family and an incredible woman. they say most days she would take an hour long subway ride to the beach. that's how much she loved the ocean. by all accounts this historic shark attack was truly brutal and she remembers it in vivid detail. >> i think the fact that she's alive is a miracle. >> reporter: this morning the family of tatiana, the 65-year-old woman mauled by a shark off rockaway beach, opening up about that harrowing day. >> the severity of this one the surgeon said, he had never seen anything like it. >> reporter: tatiana is the first victim of a confirmed shark attack in new york city since the 1950s. her daughter and son in law say

she had been enjoying her new retirement up until august 7th. walk me through what your mother told you happened that day. >> she was in the water as she normally was towards the end of the day. she felt something bump into her hard. and then she saw the shark on its belly up look at her. >> rockaway beach. people have bitten. >> possible shark attack. >> she saw all of its teeth. she described how green and dirty they were. and then the shark attacked and she remembers a cloud of blood in the water. >> reporter: dasha said her mother screamed for help and tried to get back to shore. >> she felt herself losing energy and just counting to 9 or something to just make it to the shore.

the police officer came and was quick to apply a make shift tourniquit. she credits that for saving her life. >> reporter: according to her daughter, she is convinced she was bitten by a great white. the doctor called it the biggest bite he's ever seen. >> he was just kind of in awe of it, in awe that she survived that. >> reporter: her family said she's always been a survivor, immigrating from ukraine in the '90s and then becoming a single mother when her husband passed soon after. >> she's a fighter. she's fought for everything in our lives on her own. >> reporter: tatiana's road to recovery will take years. she's still in the hospital, having undergone seven surgeries with at least one more ahead. but her family says she's resilient and she's not bitter. >> my mom is in love with nature, with animals. i do think she'd want me to tell

on pacifica hybrid building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. >> this is abc seven news. >> good morning i'm reggie from abc seven mornings and jobina has a look at our traffic. >> thank you reggie good morning everybody. i'm bringing in our oakland 8-80 at the coliseum camera because in the southbound direction on 880 right at 98th avenue you are going to run into a crash that's blocking at least one lane. but interestingly, it's the northbound traffic that is really slowed and also southbound on 680 at walnut creek, you are under the limit and in the northbound direction , that crash is cleared. hey, drew. hey, jobina. >> here's a look at our east bay hills camera. we are dealing with an air quality advisory today for smog and smoke. you can clearly see that right now temperatures are in the 50s and 60s for the most part. we'll take a live look at exploratorium camera. we do have that hazy sunshine. the takeaway today, it is a cooler afternoon. nowhere near as hot as we were yesterday. temps in the 70s and 80s away from the coast. reggie thanks for your time now for live with kelly and mark.
