has re-ignited calls for term limits but a journalist said get used to aging politicians and talk to him about extreme longevity and consequences. one of the most important high profile summit of business leaders is coming to san francisco. is the city ready. first, as red states pass anti-lgbtq laws, california voters will and three initiatives that could curtail transgender children's rights. joining us what could be a major reckoning, member of the california legislative lgbtq caucus. thank you for joining us from your car. >> good to see you. and that is a beautiful red.
3:02 pm
>> you are wearing a blue tie, not that there is any meaning here. but there are public battles fought here. californians from afar and see these other states are battle over lgbtq rights. tell our viewers about this new effort to put three initiatives on the ballot, who is behind them and what are they seeking to do? >> let's be clear about the specifics. california needs to ensure we reflect the inclusion. unfortunately the weaponization specifically from the republican party has been such they are using these wedge issues trying to figure out opportunities to divide and that is what the focus is on. what you referenced are far-right outlandish proposals that would attack those most
3:03 pm
vulnerable, that of those who are transgender in our schools. and that is the problematic part where we are seeing it in a number of other states and in the country, over 500 pieces of legislation targeting the lgbtq community have been introduced throughout the community in multiple states. and if we don't stand strong and say we don't do things that way. >> these three components are to notify parents if the teachers see that the kid may be transgender and the other is no participation in a sport on a team that doesn't align with your birth sex and then also, i think it would ban gender caring for minors. what are the consequences of each of these three? >> what is the problem? the solution to what problem?
3:04 pm
this is not a compelling problem. you are not seeing the protection of children with respect to this issue being problematic. how many children have been harmed from drag shows, how many children on the flip side have been abused from the catholic church. in fact a number of die oweses have been filed for bankruptcy. let's look at facts and data points. this is about utilizing web issues to deflect from the real issues at hand and costly measure. we believe to empower local communities and allowing parents to decide for themselves. >> we saw this battle being previewed in chino valley unified and we have been reporting on this. state superintendent being booed out of the meeting and the attorney general sueing and

trying to get it reversed and they did get reversed and if they wanted to use a different pronoun. if you were a teen in that district and looking back on your own teenaged years. would there have been devastating sequences if you weren't ready to talk to your parents? >> put our shoes of a young adult. already, there is someone who may be a member of the lgbtq community to become public knowing there is a discourse of being attacked and what type of environment are we creating and no wonder why so many individuals are closeted about being outed because of this environment and we want to make it clear that we correct this course of action and ensure that
3:06 pm
all members of our community are kept safe while making sure that parents also have a decision in this process. that is what this is about. when you are looking at the specifics on the facts of what it is, on the face of it, this is to help deter and divide really from the political nature of what's going on. this is not a compelling issue and not the top 10 issues facing children, facing school districts or parents, let's talk about the issues that matter. >> anti-lgbtq forces are taking it through the ballot measures. you have a super majority in the california legislature. but i wonder if you are confident that california voters would turn it down. california voters different times than 2008, approved
3:07 pm
propose 8 approving same sex marriage. are you confident in the voters of california? >> it would repeal proposition 8 which passed in 2008 which eliminated the rights of same sex kowsms to marry. voters will have the opportunity to repeal that and proceed protection for same-sex couples. why is this important? marriage equality would be next after overturning rowe v. wade and reproductive freedom had been enjoyed. the supreme court justices said marriage equality would be next. we have an opportunity to
3:08 pm
reflect on the values and making sure that we demonstrate the love. >> tr there other legislation that you can see coming up that you might be interesting in proposing yourself to protect lgbtq people in california and the youth? >> we have done an incredible job in california but what is important is protect against fringe activists on school boards focused on dividing our communities. they have the duty to uphold the law that will help protect children and instead these forced outings, ordinances and legislative proposals deter and helps cause additional harm when that is the opposite of their fundamental duty. >> i hope it is all right to ask and concerned about your brother. hopefully he is ok.
3:09 pm
a san jose police officer and his partner shot. he pulled her out of the line of fire. how is he doing and how is his partner doing? >> you are so kind. this is an issue that hits close to home. but oftentimes a reminder about the sacrifice that our men and women take each and every day, putting on a uniform not knowing if they are going to come home at night. but they have a higher calling to protect our communities and he takes it very seriously and many in the rank and file in the police departments take that seriously. a reminder about the sacrifices they make and opportunity to reaffirm support and commitment to public servants. >> give him our gratitude. thank you for your time today.

senator, running for re-election in 2026? yes. >> i'm sorry, we will need you a minute. >> the capitol physician cleared the 81-year-old to work again and said the second freezing episode much like his first one was the result of occasional light headness and stirring up calls for resignation and term limits. "the big 100" says america better get used to aging politicians. i want to talk about you. you recently retired as an editor for the associated press and correspondent who covered stories around the world. and now you turned your attention to the issue of aging
3:14 pm
and super aging, why? >> i think it is fascinating. it turns out the number of people living to 100 is increasing and going to see more of that in the next few decades as the boomers age in triple digits but aging beyond just the that and this is top of mind today hard to watch video of mitch mcconnell and reunited the conversation of how old is too old to hold office. >> right. more people living past 100 but the political component-f we are going to have old leadership that the average median average of senators is 65. what are the consequences of that? >> they are luge. the median age of americans is just under 40.
3:15 pm
if you look at the whole congress, only 5% of congress is. first off, younger americans aren't being represented, their needs, their issues. there is a danger of us kind of becoming a becoming gray america. >> boomers, that is a big demographic group and keep politicians in office, no? >> it is. ok boomer means not long ago where genz. i'm a boomer myself. but there is a members have power. and for younger generations.
3:16 pm
>> while you talk about younger people not having their views represented, what if we look at it from the framework of race. is there a racial component to extreme longevity? >> there is. excluding asia where we have power house nations like japan, you know, in this country, 8-10, people who live to 100 are white. and i can't imagine something more emblem attic of inequity than time itself and the way people live on average about six years longer than black people in america, something we have to close that gap somehow. >> right. i'm not sure there is an answer but there is a wealth gap and a
3:17 pm
lot of wealthy people chasing the fountain of youth and putting money into that. but to ask you, collectively, is that a problem? >> well, you know, we are developing new treatments and mentioned these longevity hacks, stem cell treatments available and some people are having transfusion of younger people's plasma. none of this stuff is approved by the f.d.a. the jury is out on its safety. but we have a pattern in the united states of wealthy people being able to afford to try things. >> i am wondering if it presents some problems. if you have a lot more people
3:18 pm
who have poverty issues and social security brokes and no jobs for young people because those senators are stealing their jobs. >> absolutely. people will be living longer and working longer. social security already is going to be depleted 10 years from now and needs to be dealt with. and average american has 35,000 saved for retirement. if we are going to live to 100, the expecter of elder poverty is something to be concerned about. >> do you begin to explore solutions in your book? >> yes. i think we have this things and find ways to re-educate people. a lot of people work in air conditioned buildings and do white collar stuff and can work
3:19 pm
longer, but a great portion of the population works in heat and in construction and service industries and you can't be 80, 90 years old and working those kinds of jobs. you have to re-imagine the workplace for older generations. and we need to do something to help people save and incentivize better. >> today's newborn can expect to live to 100 years old. how do i prepare for that? >> amazing you said that. stanford has a study and project 1-2 five-year-olds will live to 100. and we can't prepare for that. we just need to try and connect
3:20 pm
better socially and prepare ourselves to live these longer lives so we are not lonely. >> thanks for joining us. i hope folks check out your book. appreciate it. >> thank you. >> san francisco says it's a big deal, c.e.o.'s and world leaders are coming to town. next our media partner explains what it is all about and how the city will

3:26 pm
we have an article of how a lot of local chefs and asian restaurants are trying to stand out and shine. tell me what they are doing. >> apec is about asia. asian visitors who come to san francisco and san francisco has a large vibrant asian community and we have great asian industry and this can be a great match. and yes, a lot are getting ready and a lot of the diplomats coming to the city and want to try asian food. and try local asian food there. it will be a big opportunity. >> for sure. we are running some video. and i wonder if they are going
