officials back off on their plans. good afternoon. kristen: today is international overdose awareness day. the opioid crisis is difficult to escape from the news to the streets to local government, it is everywhere. if it appears to have no end in sight. since 1999, more than one million people in the u.s. have died from drug overdoses. last year, nearly 108,000 americans died twice the number of 2015. larry: 11,000 deaths were in california and the majority of overdoses caused by specifically fentanyl. kristen: in san francisco, a group of nonprofit workers is going rogue today opening a pop up safe injection site. larry: you have been covering this story for quite some time now. >> yeah, it is a call to action by these activists who say it is

taking too long for the city to establish safe consumption sites in sanford disco. today, saying enough is enough as the city stares down what is potentially the deadliest year yet in the truck overdose crisis. in the heart of the tenderloin district, a drug overdoses reversed, right this group is here setting up this pop up safe consumption site, a place for people to use drugs with summit nearby in case of an overdose. >> we are not putting anyone at risk, and coding ourselves. >> he is battling addiction to fentanyl and says it is a relief. >> do you have to move everything around? >> yeah. >> we just keep going. and feel safe. we are safe. the public is say. >> what we are doing today is we are showing how simple it can be to save lives. >> she is the executive director of a local nonprofit working with people on the streets, one

of a handful of activists who took the day off of work. >> it is important that when we do something unsanctioned that it does not below back on our organizations -- blow back on our organizations. >> they have been trying to set up safe sites, citing concerns, legal, but they have describe support for new york model, where a nonprofit is funding an operating three nights. >> this is not scary, nefarious. >> she is one of the local leaders who visited new york early this year to learn about the sites in the hopes of bringing them here. >> it is watching people to make sure they don't die. >> safe consumption sites are connecting people to treatment and housing, as well as handing out clean needles and other harm reduction supplies. >> we have different needles for people to choose from. we have sterile water to used to

parents in san jose who say awareness is the key to saving lives. >> i don't want to meet another parent who lost her child because their child was not educated. >> overcome with emotion says parents remember their children before they died of a fentanyl overdose. one of them, her son died on thanksgiving weekend after taking what he thought was annexed from a friend -- was a pill from a friend. >> he was not there. he had no clue what happened. the deputy, i believe found the drug in his pocket. holding a portrait of her son, she remembers him as a fun and caring man and says her son did not know the drug he took was laced with fentanyl. >> it did not make sense to me. it is a drug, you would have to take a bottle of it for anything like this to happen. the santa clarita supervisor gathered parents and leaders to spread awareness about the

dangers of fentanyl in the county health department says overdose death tripled from 2018 to 2022 and say most are young adults. >> we have to get smarter and more strategic in terms of how we are addressing it. we cannot give up because we are losing the lives of children in our community. >> dr. masella -- michelle jordan says she finds fentanyl mixed with other drugs on a regular basis. >> the vast majority of fentanyl overdoses in santa clara county involve another drug, along with fentanyl. >> dealers often don't know the chemistry for making drugs and mixing in fentanyl is a way to make drugs more potent. the problem, it makes one dose deadly. >> he got a bad pill, something i had not heard of, and the more i learned the angrier i got because i have not heard it. how could this be out there? >> they want parents to know the

dangers of street drug use and to know the dangers. >> i had know>> knowledge if he knew the risk or what was in that pill but i know he did not want to die that i know. kristen: the white house today announced a $450 million investment to address the opioid epidemic. the money will go to overdose prevention, treating addiction and increasing efforts to disrupt the supply of opioids. larry: the weather and the poor air quality continues but improvement is on the way in our sinuses, cannot wait for that to get here. kristen: let's check in with sandhya patel. sandhya: we can't wait to breathe easier. let's look at a live picture now from our oakland airport camera. it is difficult not to notice how hazy it is. as we look at the air quality, the worst is to the north, red,

un-harmed civilians, black and brown men but to be killed inhumanely. >> the loved ones that the man said the community needs to do something. >> it is not just about him, but everyone and justice. >> the vallejo police officer killed in june 2, 2020 by shooting to the windchill of an unmarked police vehicle from the backseat. his attorney tells us that his termination was overturned in arbitration along with all obligations to his use of force. he was reinstated with a reprimand for failing to timely activate his camera and received back pay and benefits. >> the news was devastating and frustrating. >> now the monetarism family, attorneys and advocates are calling on the community to stand together. >> we overruled that decision. we decided as a community the decision cannot stand. >> they plan to speak out the city council meeting on september 12. >> were calling on the community to pack the room to demand heat not get his job back, do not be

phase of the campaign designed to stop sexual harassment on public transit, including change, an advertising campaign, stories of courage and also more trains added to the schedule on nights and weekends starting september 7 -- 11, to reduce wait times with fewer cars to reduce isolated spaces, something passengers say makes them feel vulnerable. organizers say phase two of the campaign will also include some new bystander intervention cards developed by members of the foundation. >> one says, i got you. it says, do you need someone to stand with you right now? this is for someone, a bystander, witnessing a harm or act. the others says, you got me? this is for someone who is experiencing violence and sexual harassment, to ask discreetly for support. larry: the cards are available for pickup at each station agent
