to regulate that content. good evening. anchor: two are for joining us. the strategy to target social media is a latest idea as cities around the bay grapple on how to stop these illegal sideshows. anchor: as dustin dorsey explains, the mayor is leaning on his decade of experience working in social media to real solutions. reporter: sideshow activity is front and center in san jose. events have increased over the last year. there are already one 84 reported incidents. these illegal sideshows have terrorized neighbors. >> every weekend we have sideshows. it is hurting our community. cars are being broken into. >> sideshows are dangerous. to the participants and the spectators and the community.

reporter: sj activities to prevent this activity. >> we would not stand for people posting videos of themselves physically assaulting people so why would we support posting videos of people engaging in other dangerous and illegal activity that has been involved in people's deaths. reporter: he wants these videos to be removed quickly to limit the number of people that attend the events. social media expert says a change like this as possible and he says these companies have an obligation to promote public safety. >> to the other illegal activities. reporter: we reached out to the social media companies. the mayor says his office has received positive responses. we asked him why he believes his

pelea will make a difference. >> if people did not get their attention on social media we would see less activity. people are doing it for attention. the social media platforms have a responsibility to cut off that attention. reporter: they hope they will come to city hall next month. anchor: calls for transparency on the deployment of highway safety cameras are growing. weeks after a young boy was paralyzed by a stray bullet on a freeway. a group of mothers is leading the charge. reporter: online they are known as families racing for oakland. in everyday life they are moms with a mission. >> we are committed to making oakland a better place. we are lending our boys. -- we are lending our voice. reporter: hundreds have joined

their cause. in the last 15 days they have sent 449 letters to local and state officials demanding transparency on the installation of highway cameras. the main driver was a heartbreaking story of an eight-year-old boy now paralyzed after being hit by crossfire in july. >> unfortunately it is an awful story. reporter: today chp confirmed they have made no arrests in the shooting of the eight-year-old boy and would not reveal if there were any cameras on that stretch of i-5 80. governor newsom provided $10 million for caltrans to begin the process of installing 200 freeway cameras at approximately 50 locations throughout the stage. hercules vice mayor wants details on their deployment. >> they cameras are important but it is who is gathering the information. there has to be a hub where that

comes into. the state does not want to do it. reporter: in a statement caltrans said, as of today as part of the initial phase of the highway camera safety pilot program, caltrans has installed approximately 180 cameras in the bay area. caltrans has not confirmed if any of these cameras are active. when was that? >> that happened august 18 at 1:04 in the morning. reporter: since 2011 they have been using this technology and they have seen a significant decrease in shootings. >> any time gunfire goes off in the city we are notified within seconds of the location and that is when the investigation can start. reporter: these moms hope more of these cameras can make a difference. >> this is a fully funded solution. let's make this happen. anchor: let's shift and talk about our weather.

you may have noticed smoky skies. anchor: we are under an air quality advisor. meteorologist: let's take a look at a live picture. it sums up what we are experiencing. still the smoke in the sky. from our walnut creek camera. moderate air quality for the bay area. it is due to the wildfires from northern california to the oregon border. look at the air quality. the worst is around ukiah. the smoke forecast shows you the winds pushing the smoke out of our region as we head towards late tonight and tomorrow morning. we expect an improvement in the air quality. i will be back with a full look at the weekend forecast coming right up. anchor: we will check back with you. today is international overdose awareness day.

to understand why we need to have this writer awareness, let's show you some statistics. more than one million people have died from a drug overdose since 1999. 75% of drug overdose deaths involved and opioid. we are committed to building a better bay area and focused on finding solutions. today we are introducing you to some of the parents of fen overdose victims. grieving parents say awareness is key to saving lives. >> i don't want to meet another parent who lost their child because their child was not educated. reporter: overcome with emotions as parents remember their children before they died of a fentanyl overdose. gerald son died after what he thought was xanax. >> when we all ran in i saw his beautiful face and i knew he was not there.

we had no clue how it had happened. the deputy found the xanax and his pocket. reporter: holding a portrait of her son she remembers him as a young and caring man. >> it did not make sense to me. this is xanax. you would have to take a bottle for this to happen. reporter: she gathered parents and county leaders to spread awareness about the dangers of fentanyl. the county health department said opioid overdose deaths increased and most are young adults. >> we have to get smarter and more strategic in terms of how we are addressing it. we cannot give up because we are losing the lives of children in our community. reporter: dr. michelle jordan says she finds fentanyl mixed with other drugs on a regular basis. >> the vast majority of our fentanyl overdoses do involve

another drug along with fentanyl. reporter: supervisor chavez say dealers often don't know the chemistry of making drugs. the problem is fentanyl makes one dose deadly. >> he got a bad pill. something i had never heard of. the more i learned the more angry i got because i had never heard of it. how could this be out there. reporter: she wants all parents to know the dangers of drug street use. >> i had no idea if my son knew the risk. we will never know. i have no idea if he knew what was in that pill. i knew he did not want to die. that i know. anchor: earlier today and addiction specialist joined us on abc 7's midday live to shed more light on the opioid crisis. he said many people's addiction starts with dependence on prescription drugs. >> it is up to all of us to

marina. police tried to pull over their car when they robbed one person which is when the chase started. they were arrested near the embarcadero. ama: family and friends of the man killed by a valeo police officer in 2020 are bowing to take action over the officers reinstatement to the forest. an arbitrator order the officer reinstated two weeks ago with full pay. he was terminated after he fired a shot from the backseat of an unmarked patrol car killing the victim. the victim's family says -- says the reinstatement encourages this. >> this is the time to be in coordination with us. ama: the family is hoping will protest his reinstatement at the september 12 council meeting. they are also calling on the attorney general to act. his department has been investigating the case for two years.

dan: the final piece of a major affordable housing project in san francisco's valley is now finished. there was a celebration of the completion of the three-story development. it consists of 21 income restricted homes. >> in the process of focusing on all of the new development in our housing, we cannot forget about preservation. preservation of existing, affordable housing to ensure that the people living in buildings like this are protected. dan: 363 is the last of five former public housing sites rehabilitated i a nonprofit developer. the project has added affordable housing units to the city. ama: the warriors lent a hand -- lend a hand to make reading cool

because of the smoke and the haze. 6:00 tonight, still smoky. as the sea breeze gets stronger and pushes the smoke out of the picture, it is going to be better air quality going into tomorrow afternoon and evening. on live doppler seven we are seeing an increase in cloud cover as a cold front comes through. the moisture is around the pacific northwest. clouds, wind and a drop off in temperatures. 24 degrees cooler right now in napa. the sea breeze has picked up gusting at 21. it will still be windy, 40 mile-per-hour winds at 6:00 tonight at the coast. breezy to gusty conditions will carry over into your friday keeping the cooling trend going.
