overcast skies this morning. we keep the chance of drizzle in the forecast through noon. into the afternoon we are drier. a bit brighter. some sunshine and the winds will increase and temperatures only in the low 60's to low 70's. you want to dress more for fall than summer. we will look at the complete holiday we can forecast coming up in a few minutes. let's see how traffic is doing this morning. jobina: we have two crashes to talk about on westbound 24 that are clogging things up. the first one is going to be westbound 24 before northbound 13. the second is west on 24 before claremont avenue. that one is in the process of clearing. aside from that and the major closure in vallejo we will get to in a moment. everything else pretty clear. the toll plaza, no metering lights on yet. a nice ride going into the holiday weekend. a lot of people are not coming into the office this weekend. overall view of the map, the

purple line with the giant closure is where i will send it to gloria. gloria: thank you so much. happening now, one section of a bay area freeway is closed until tuesday morning as thousands of people are getting ready to hit the road for labor day weekend. ryan curry is live in vallejo with what you need to know. good morning, ryan. r would be popular on a friday with this being a commute route that leads into san francisco and the east bay. not today. the only crews that are coming through here are chp or caltrans trucks making their way over to the construction site. what the repaving -- there they go now. we want to look at what the detours mean for you heading into the holiday weekend. westbound i-80 from 780 and vallejo to highway 4 to hercules. eastbound remains open. the detour will take you down

780 on to 680 and into martinez. and you can take highway 4 before you get back on interstate 80. this is a very important project. they will be pouring 9000 pounds of concrete and completely refacing four lanes of traffic off the carquinez bridge. this will cause issues for labor day weekend. caltrans says if you need to head into the city or oakland, take 680 and 24 as an option. regardless, many drivers a happy about this. >> i feel like they should do it overnight and by the morning, 4:00 or 5:00, they should open up the lanes so nobody has to suffer. >> they should do it in the middle the night like they usually do, between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. ryan: caltrans says that is not an option. they say if they did that it would take nine months of overnight closers to finish the job they are doing this weekend.

they say the fact it is a holiday weekend should not hinder traffic too badly. especially on the friday before labor day weekend. we know the bay area has a history of seeing bridges closed on labor day weekend. the bay bridge numerous times has closed as they were finishing that project. it's another thing drivers have to deal with. keep in mind the detours. those will come in handy throughout the weekend. ryan curry, abc 7 news. reggie: thank you. a live look at our abc 7 oakland airport camera. nearly a quarter of a million passengers are expected to travel through their this weekend. that's about 80% of the traffic they saw and 2019. sfo was expecting to see below -- be below pre-pandemic levels but not by much. 93% of 2019 numbers. a live look at the south bay. san jose airport officials expect the best of the past three years there. gloria: this is shaping up to be the busiest summer for air travel on record.

the tsa expects it will screen more than 14 million passengers this holiday weekend. international bookings are up 44% compared to last year. experts say there's a good reason why more people are traveling overseas. >> this is the first summer they felt comfortable doing so. you have essentially three years of pent up demand for international travel. gloria: today is expected to be the busiest day at the airports. reggie: sfo does not expect disruptions this holiday weekend after american airlines flight attendants voted to authorize a strike. an sfo spokesperson told the chronicle they are not seeing an impact on operations. american airlines no longer has a base of the airport but almost 400 of the carrier's flight attendants live here and commute to work. they are demanding a 40% pay raise. gloria: your drive to lake is getting an upgrade. caltrans is installing dozens of signs to alert drivers to the conditions and other issues they

may run into on the roadway. the signs are highly visible and can be changed when needed. there are nearly 80 being installed and they should be ready to go in just a couple of weeks. reggie: president biden will travel to florida tomorrow to assess the damage from hurricane the dalia -- idalia. jobina: the president major declaration for florida and is promising federal resources are on the way. he's asking congress for billions in extra disaster relief funding for florida and maui. fema representatives say the main focus is to work with state and local officials to figure out what they need to recover. in the big bend area the storm brought powerful winds and severe flooding when it made landfall earlier this week. many homes and businesses were destroyed. some residents have been left with nothing. >> it was heartbreaking. shed many tears.

if they continue to post it could be an indefinite suspension. the mayor says the posts can attract hundreds to a location in a matter of minutes. >> these dangerous and illegal event are fueled by social media. they are increasingly spread, consumed, and attended primarily for the purpose of generating content to get likes and build a social media following. reggie: abc 7 reached out to several companies to ask about the proposal. we have not heard back. the mayor says he has received positive responses from the companies. calls are growing for transparency on the deployment of freeway safety cameras. it comes after a stray bullet paralyzed this eight-year-old boy. he was hit on interstate 580 in july. the chp says there has not been any arrests and they would not reveal if there were any cameras in the area. governor newsom provided $10

million in the 2020 throug -- 2022-20 23 fiscal year to install freeway cameras in approximately 50 locations throughout the state. a group of moms known online as families for a safer oakland have sent more than 400 letters to local and state officials about this. >> recommended to make oakland a better place and we are starting to lend her voice to things we think are important. that is how a lot of us got involved in avenue c -- advocacy about installing cameras longer freeways. reggie: caltrans says, "as part of the initial phase of the highway camera safety pilot program, caltrans has installed approximately 180 cameras in the bay area. simultaneously, caltrans is working to -- to upgraded cameras to record. caltrans did not confirm if any of these cameras are already active. former president donald trump

has pleaded not guilty to election interference charges in georgia. the plea comes a week after authorities booked trump of the fulton county jail on 13 felony counts. he also waived his right to appear at his arraignment on wednesday. georgia courts have fairly relaxed rules when it comes to cameras being allowed in courtrooms. the move likely prevented trump from having to enter that plea on tv. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell got the go-ahead to go back to work as many are questioning whether he is healthy enough to do so. the attending physician cleared senator mcconnell to resume his schedule. on wednesday, he froze while speaking to reporters. his second such incident in a month. his staff blames both episodes on lightheadedness. president biden says he's confident the kentucky senator will be ok. >> i spoke to mitch. he's a friend. i spoke to him today. you know, he was his old self on the telephone. reggie: senator mcconnell also

suffered a concussion in march. some republicans are now calling on mcconnell to be more transparent about his health conditions if he wants to continue serving as minority leader. others are questioning if he should retire, along with several other congresspeople in their 80's and 90's, including senator dianne feinstein. gloria: for the first time, clarence thomas has disclosed trips paid for by friend and billionaire harlan crow. in his annual filing, he listed five flights on crow's private jet in the past year and a trip. he amended a previous financial disclosure to confirm crow purchased three properties from the thomas family back in 2014. the disclosures, as thomas has been facing criticism for accepting lavish trips from crow who was a large gop donor. he said previously he did not report the trips because he was not required to based on previous disclosure rules that were recently changed. reggie: more than 300 unique

cars will be at san jose city hall today for the low rider day. the mayor and two council members were gathered at the celebration to rebut the city's low rider culture. san jose lifted the decades-old ban on cruising about a year ago. this video shows the new cruising zones posted being removed. today's event runs from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. gloria: when you're a goat but you really want to be a dog. police in rapid city, south dakota shared this video showing a special recruit training to sniffer drugs and join the k-9 squad. the department joked a new recruit this week is right there and it's apparent that kid is kind of stubborn. the department says all the little guy might not be able to cut it, he still g job based on make adorable. it looks like he is hard to train. not cutting it. reggie: i'm confused.

labor day weekend because of a major repaving project. that is what you see all this traffic and a lot of traffic around the venetian bridge. this is the alternate. ryan curry is live in vallejo with what you need to know before you head out the door. ryan: good morning. you think usually this time 80 behind me near the carquinez bridge would be packed. that is not the case today as the bridge is closed while they do necessary construction and repaving of the road on the bridge as you approach the east bay and the city. take a look at the map. these are the detours you have to be mindful of heading into this holiday weekend. i-80 from 780 in vallejo to highway 4 in hercules. the east bound site is remaining open. the detour will take you down 780 on the 680, and then on the highway 4 before you end up back on interstate 80. you can also take 24. caltrans says the project is very necessary.

hesitating to set up official safe consumption sites because of legal concerns. the sites are still officially illegal under federal law, but may signal support for what has been described as the new york model. a nonprofit is finding an operating the sites like they do in new york. gloria: parents of victims of fentanyl overdoses want to remind all of us about the dangers of the drug. a handful of parents gathered yesterday to remember the children. abc 7 spoke with a woman whose son died after he thought -- after he took a bill he thought was prescription xanax. it was laced with fennel. san jose supervisor cindy chavis says dealers often don't know the chemistry for making drugs and mix in fentanyl to make a more potent. it also makes it more deadly. one dose can be fatal. >> key got a bad pill, something i had never heard of. the more i learned the angrier i got. i had never heard of it.

it made me so angry. how can this be out there? gloria: the santa clara county health department says opioid overdose deaths tripled from 2018 to 2022. they say most of the victims are young adults. reggie: new details of a story our i-team has been covering extensively. the mysterious massive land purchases around travis air force base. we know a powerful group backed by silicon valley wealth is behind it. now we have a better idea on what they are looking to build. the new website called california forever posted these images of their vision. with more than 50,000 acres to work with, they want to create a utopia. a city with welcoming neighborhoods, create local jobs and preserve the open space. the plan is detailed on the website. those behind it say they will ask solano county residents for approval before any shovels go into the ground. gloria: the developers behind the plan to build a skyscraper in san francisco's sunset

submitted an application under a new law. that's according to our media partners at the san francisco standard. a law that took effect last month allows for faster approval of mixed-income housing on commercial land with certain criteria met. the original plan has been rejected by the city audible times. the developers have sued the city, saying officials misinterpreted a different state law and rejecting the project. reggie: a rising covid cases has many families looking for a home test kit again. apparently they are hard to find. the state's positivity rate climbed from 3.5% at the start of summer to more than 13% now. that recent bump along with kids going back to school is fueling the demand for more tests. we found many local stores are out of stock. >> i went to costco this morning hoping to get some. i came down here to the cvs in nevada hoping to get some. they have not had any since early august, they told me. reggie: california's

gloria: 6:45. a major setback for health care for transgender people in texas. starting today, a ban on gender affirming care for most minors takes effect. it prohibits people from under 18 from getting treatment. minors already getting treatment will be forced to ween off the medications. providers who offer care could have their license revoked. a separate lot restricting drag shows was also supposed to take effect today but a federal judge issued a temporary injunction against that measure. reggie: the anti-lgbtq+ bills
