7:15 am
that's cast a shadow over the whole supreme court. in his annual filing thomas disclosed for the first time in decades that he accepted private travel in the past year paid for by crowe a long time friend. and he amended a previous disclosure to confirm crow purchased three properties from the thomas family in 2014. in an unusual move, thomas included a statement defending the trips and acknowledging he inadvertently omitted other financial details. in his annual filing thomas listed five flights taken aboard crow's private jet including a trip to crow's estate. he said he was advised to take noncommercial travel following the dobbs opinion leak in the case that overturned roe versus wade. >> i'm sure you and all of us want to join -- thank harlan crow and his family. i know harlan hates that. >> i wouldn't say it.
7:16 am
>> i knew he had to do it. >> i'd like to keep that friendship. >> reporter: thomas has taken luxury trips on crow's dime for decades. he hadn't reported any of it since a flight in 1997 until pro publica first reported on the travel in april detailing thomas' time on crow's super yacht in the south pacific and a retreat in the adirondaks. in his statement, thomas pledged to report any trips from 2022 on ward citing new guidance for judges that explicitly requires them to report transportation that substitutes for commercial transportation. but critics say that previous trips justice thomas has taken should have been reported, too, but supreme court justices have long held they are not subject to bindings ethics rules on separations of power. because of all this, rebecca, that could change. >> terry, thank you. we turn to the latest jobs report set to be released this morning. andrew dymburt is here with what to expect.
7:17 am
including that impact on everyone's wallet who's watching. >> good morning. the latest jobs report is out this morning. analysts expect it to show a slowing labor market. hiring appears to have waned over the summer. the august jobs report is likely to show the economy added 170,000 jobs last month down from 187,000 in july. the unemployment rate is presumed to remain unchanged around 3.5%. some contributing factors to a cooling job market include the nationwide strikes like hollywood writers and actors who walked off the job and on to the picket line reducing employment by some 16,000 jobs. slightly higher than what was expected. but it shows the job market is cooling. >> the big money impact is interest rates and what happens after this report with the fed. >> i guess the hope is among some economists that since there hasn't been a sharp rise in unemployment an argument could be made for no rate hikes. what the federal reserve does next also depends on where inflation is headed. jerome powell said if inflation remains too high they are
7:18 am
prepared to raise rates further. we get a new read on inflation later this month. >> thank you, andrew. it's always a balancing act between prices and what you pay on your credit card. we appreciate it. coming up buster murdaugh breaks his silence in the first interview since refuting rumors he was involved in the death of his former classmate, stephen smith. a teen shot when mistakenly going to the wrong home faces the suspect in court. details on that. also this morning consumers are being tricked into buying from fake bed bath and beyond websites. we will tell you how to spot this scam. but first back to ginger. hey, ginge. >> hey. new york city did not officially hit 90 all of august, which we haven't done in 37 years, houston had their hottest august on record. check that out. really, really warm. average temperature was 102.7. we could see some daily records broken or tied in those areas that you see that big ridge in

>> britt, what a story of inspiration. now to a new warning about rip currents as families head to the beach this holiday weekend. let's go back to ginger at the beach in sea bright, new jersey, with what to know to stay safe. hey, ginger. >> hey. good morning to you. i grew up on the great lakes. we have rip current, too. they have been super deadly here along the atlantic. i want to look out to the ocean that piling of wind and water because we've got four named storms or what's left of them out there. that is going to make it bad on beaches from massachusetts down to florida. take a look. this morning as the unofficial last weekend of summer heats up, almost the entire atlantic coast is on alert for high surf or life threatening rip currents. plus five to ten foot waves. dangerous concoction for anybody going to the beach. >> we have a rip current recipe for disaster right here. full moon is pulling on the
8:20 am
current stronger than ever and then the storm adds waves and wind that just makes things that much more dangerous for everyone. >> that pull is made when on shore flow hits the beach then turns to go back out to sea and breaks through sand bars or forms around piers and jetties. it creates this narrow river of water that races from the shore. they move at one to two feet per second and are impossible to beat. at least 70 people have been killed in rip currents in the u.s. this year alone. >> you're more likely to get in trouble or drown in a rip current than you are to be struck by lightning in these conditions. >> i had a chance to feel a rip current about a decade ago with the san diego life guards and coast guards. now i am really in a rip current. so my instinct is to swim directly where i came from but then i'll have to go against the current.
8:21 am
it's what most people do, and that's a mistake. my swimming is very labored. definitely not easy. i have made absolutely no progress. instead, the experts say swim parallel to shore and stay calm. >> if you get caught in a rip current, the most important thing is not to panic. you want to swim parallel, either left or right, of the shore line to try to get to a sand bar. that's your best bet for safety. >> they also say swim in front of the life guard and have a floatation device somewhere around. if you want to be extra careful, watch the flags. if there are red flags this weekend, which there will be. look at that high surf expected. five to ten feet. lot of those on shore coastal flooding warnings. just don't swim. that would be a choice, too. here's the good news. these wave heights and everything going to go down as we get toward labor day itself. that's the big picture. let's get a drew: i'm drew tuma with your accuweather forecast. starting out with mostly cloudy skies. pockets of drizzle this morning.
8:22 am
a bit of afternoon sunshine in the mix but temperatures, you want to dress more for fall like conditions than summer because of the numbers today. below average. only in the 60's and low 70's. overnight is mostly cloudy with pocket the drizzle. heading into the holy weekend, partly sunny guys on saturday and sunday. brighter and warmer for labor day. >> it is that time of the week. lori b is here with the right stuff. she called upon the help of our incredible gma wardrobe experts to bring us the top wardrobe savers this morning. you can check out the products by scanning the qr code on your screen. i am so excited about all of these tips. we're starting off with clothing. johnetta is showing off her best must have for ironing. >> with the iron shoe, you can use the highest temperature setting on any fabric and achieve the best
8:23 am

8:24 am
affordable. it goes and transforms those straps to hide them. johnetta was telling me when guests come out, they don't have the right bra. she can use it in an instant to make them look perfect. >> just enough to hide the straps. >> exactly. >> this one is from our costume designer woody. this is his favorite problem solver. starting with a shoe cleaning kit. >> like the song, when there's a shine on your shoes there's a melody in your heart. the shoe cleaning kit is ideal to help keep your shoes and sneakers looking smart. keep one at home, in your car or your gym locker. >> i love him. >> i know. don't you love him. that will make you remember this travel kit. this is an incredible kit. $25. these are woody's actual shoes, eva. this is like real investigative reporting here. these are his actual shoes. he's had them for years. they look brand new. that's largely in part to this kit because it comes with a premium cleaner, a brush, these little wipes.

8:26 am
collar is a little too tight heading into the holidays. >> yes. >> double stick tape. button pins, you get 18 pieces again, really affordable. great thing to have very quick. >> you did that in two seconds. all right. this next one is from wanda holmes. she's our gma weekend wardrobe supervisor. and she swears by double sided tape. take a look. >> stick it, fix it, secure it, stick it. double sided tape is the ultimate tape for most wardrobe malfunction. i use it apparel to apparel for a quick fix on a hem or apparel to skin to keep a bra strap in place. and for anyone with sensitive skin, it is good to know that it is hypoallergenic. >> so want to explain that so well that super sticky tape. it's great to have. and i also want to really quickly get this genie dry cleaner in a stick. if you have an old stain, this will lift it. grease dairy, any kind of residue. you use this, it lifts it right up our wardrobe really quickly.
