stripping the pac-12 of its power in basketball and football. this transition will not be easy. reporter: from the pacific coast to the atlantic coast, cal and stanford are heading east. i have received and accepted invitations for their schools to be part of the acc conference starting in august of 2024. >> ourselves in a place that's going to allow us to be successful for the long term. reporter: stanford athletics, echoing that sentiment, saying the move provides the opportunity for student athletes to conpursuing excellence at theigst levels nationally.

now, not all spo the change. certain sports not offered like beach volleyball, men's gymnastics, and water polo, the teams will have to find a new conference to call home. but there are options. >> for the teams that will move to the acc, they will not have -- now have adjusted travel schedules. the majority of the sports will not be impacted because they participate in tournaments not frequently played and like golf and swimming. but for traveling athletes, the travel will be an adjustment. >> i think it will take away from school a little bit. they can study on the plane but they are going to want to sleep or do something else. and the wear and tear of the body. mentally, bring that to the airport. reporter: on a positive note,

it will bring greater exposure to athletes playing on the east coast. they say it is a win for both schools in the long run financially. >> i look at the marketing opportunities cal and stanford have in associating with acc. i think that is an incredible level of business opportunity. reporter: opportunities coming to cal and stanford starting in 2024. dustin dorsey, abc7 news. larry: chris alvarez is joining us to talk more about the decision to join the acc. california's now on the atlantic ocean. chris: larry, we about this in the sports office. why is this good for the acc? larry: it's survival for them. to have a bunch of schools, clemson,, florida state, north

carolina that may bolt. they are unhappy with the revenue distribution as it stands right now. in order for the acc to retain its status, they need a certain number of teams. if those teams leave, you go below the number required, you become a group of five conference with reduced exposure, it is bad, bad, bad, that is the attractiveness of cal and stanford. they have so much donor money. it doesn't matter. let's be honest here. a horrible, horrible idea. but it's the least horrible of some even more horrible possible outcomes. like what? going independent. stanford might be able to pull it off. cal, no way. drop down a level? take reduced revenue there? reconstitute the pack -- the

more news. the lease expires today for the fairfax children's center. for decades it's been a lifeline for hundreds of low income families across marin county. cornell bernard shows us what directors are doing to help keep the center from relocating. reporter: the playground is a happy place at the fairfax children's center. there's lots happening inside, too. the center, one of the few subsidized low-cost childcare providers, serving 85 families, many who are totally stressed out these days. >> she asked me on the way to school today if they were going to close her school. reporter: she had no easy answer for her young daughter. >> this facility is a special place to so many families. there's generations that have come here. reporter: this year is our 50th anniversary --

>> this year is our 50th anniversary. reporter: she is not sure the center will make it to 51 after the school district which owns the fiber go campus terminated its lease with the center this week citing costly seismic and other repairs the district can't afford to make. >> it leaves us in a precarious position. it feels like we ground. hard to think about the future and how to move forward. >> i started here when i was three months old. reporter: she grew up at the center and she is now a teacher. . her own daughter goes here. >> our space here is a huge part of the program. to have that possibly removed from our program is terrifying. reporter: marched toward the school board meeting this week to save the center, but an extension was not granted. >> the district has taken no steps or actions to what eviction. reporter: the superintendent

says the board is still talking with the center. the daycare has launched a gofundme to help purchase the property from the district, upwards of $1 million, and pay for safety upgrades. directors say it's a longshot but losing the center is not an option. >> if it would be it would be this waterfall effect, loss of employment, loss of housing, lots of food. reporter: everyone, keeping fingers crossed. cornell bernard, abc7 news. larry: in concord, a van crashed into a mobile home causing significant damage. the driver somehow lost control before smashing right into the home there. the driver was treated on scene with minor injuries. the homeowners were away at work when the accident happened. julian: a battery-powered vta bus burst into flames today. all buses are now out of service. the fire injured two mechanics

and prompted an evacuation. vta says the bus was not in operation at the time of the fire. it started in a garage. the two mechanics suffered smoke inhalation as they moved the bus away from the building and tried to put out the flames. vta's taking the proterra bus is out of service pending further investigation. larry: this is shaping up to be the busiest summer for air travel. the tsa expects to screen 14 million passengers this holiday weekend. experts say there's good reason why more people are traveling to overseas locations. this is the first summer many have felt comfortable doing so since the pandemic. julian: just as the holiday commute is ramping up, interstate 80 -- a stretch of interstate 80 remains shut down. this is one of several stretches of 80 that is really backed up this evening. cruise and started working on a pavement project overnight along interstate 80 near vallejo.

caltrans will be pouring 9000 pounds of concrete and refacing four lanes of traffic off the bridge. caltrans says condensing the work over the long weekend will spare drivers for months -- from months of overnight closures. here's how traffic looked this afternoon. don't want to be stuck in that. major backup for the holiday travelers a seral big rigs. we have a map of the closure. eastbound will remain open. the tour takes you down 780 ontr before you end up back on interstate 80. thought all that -- got all that? julian: san francisco's making a big impact in cutting down on illegal drug sales. police and sheriff's deputies have arrested more than 300 suspected drug dealers. overall, the maximum effort has resulted in the seizure of 103 kilograms of narcotics and 56 kilos of fentanyl. larry: if you have a federal student, listen up, the three year pause on the accrual of interest ended today. payments are set to resume in one month, october 1. julian: suzanne phan jones joins us with more on what this means for students and working professionals. reporter: today marks the first of two steps for restarting the student loan system that's meant to give borrowers and servicers a chance to get back slowly after everything was put on pause during the

pandemic. so many students have racked up bills because of student debt. >> upwards of $30,000. >> about $5,000 in student loans. reporter: for three years, the clock stopped on interest rates for federal student loans. today september 2, things changed -- september 1, things changed. >> it marks the real start getting ready to start making payments again. reporter: for some, that's a scary thought. especially this student who plans to go to law school after he graduates. >> it is very tedious to worry about having to pay back loans or debt. reporter: annalise has a dentist for more than three years in the bay area. >> i owe somewhere around $480,000. and i didn't take out any student loans for my undergrad.

so, that's all straight school loans. my largest loan is about $70,000. that's on a 7.6% interest rate. reporter: the president of institute of student loan advisors has this advice. >> make sure you know where your loans are, what your payment is, and if you can afford that payment, look into the various payment options available to federal student loans. reporter: the thought of paying back can be difficult to process. >> in order to keep up with interest rates, i'd have to start making payments of at least $3000 a month. that's how much pure interest my loans accrue every month. reporter: but financial experts say there are ways to make it all work out. and there is a one-year grace period. it reported to credit agencies.

drivers will pay a little more to park at two bart stations that are increasing their daily fees, going to three dollars per day at both stations. pricing for multi-day down a bit to four dollars. monthly parking will now cost $84 at both stations. julian: it is time for some consumer news. larry: michael finney is here to look at the headlines. michael: i'm very happy about this one. the federal government will dictate minimum staffing at nursing homes by spelling out just how many nurses and aides must be present at all times. the new standards call for a registered nurse to be on duty at all times. it also requires a nurse aide for every 10 residents. 38 states regulate nursing homes right now. the new staffing standards are higher than 75% of the rules. the nursing home industry says

>> building a better bay area. moving forward. finding solutions. this is abc7 news. ♪ larry: president biden says the u.s. economy's moving in the right direction after a better-than-expected jobs report. julian: it shows hiring held steady in august. but what does it mean for inflation and interest rates? reporter: the jobs report

shows 187,000 jobs were added in august. more than the 170,000 economists expected. but the unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.8%. >> divided 13.5 million -- you've added 13.5 million jobs since i took office. created more jobs in two years than any president created in a four-year single four-year term. reporter: health care, and hospitality and construction saw jobs added. wages rose 2/10 of a percent, coming in lower than economists had forecast. after raising interest 11 times since last year, the central bank, hoping for a soft landing, in which hiring and growth slow enough to cool prices but not so much they push the economy into recession. the latest report on inflation is due out later this month. despite prices remaining

elevated and higher borrowing costs, american spending remains strong. a report from the commerce department showed consumer spending increased by .8% in july. the most in six months. but that spending could slow. households are drawing down on savings. the biden administration has unveiled a new proposal under which millions of salary workers become eligible for overtime pay. the change could have an impact on low paid salary workers in areas such as retail, hospitality and manufacturing. larry: travel to florida tomorrow to assess the damage from hurricane idalia. requested last month. the money will help replenish fema's relief fund and help states recover from the

hurricane and the maui wildfires. this year there have been 15 weather-related disasters and each of them exceeded $1 billion in damage. julian: fire fighters who volunteered to help with relief efforts following the maui wildfires were welcomed home to san francisco today. they met at chinatown's cafe after a week of helping on the island. they distributed water, supplies and basic necessities and helped in the kitchen. >> thank you for going to lahaina and putting san francisco's spirit of compassion in the hands of our brothers and sisters there. julian: the firefighters spoke of the devastation they saw on maui, things that will stick with them for quite some time. at at least 380 are still missing. larry: police in two states are dealing with escaped convicts. authorities say 34-year-old

to protect whales are offering a thank you to shipping companies. dan ashley took a look at how this system works. reporter: if they could do it in their own language, thousands of migrating whales will probably want to say "thank you." a group of marine scientists is saying it for them. they are awarding trophies to commercial shipping companies thanking them for slowing down to help protect the whales from deadly collisions. >> i think it is something that is well-deserved. we have a number of shipping lines who have drastically changed their operations and drastically changed their scheduling to ensure that they are slowing down to 10 knots. reporter: she is with the -- with nooa california marine sanctuary foundation. the
