finding solutions. this is abc7 news. >> a bus goes up in flames in san jose. this while mechanics were working on it. and what makes this one different is that that bus is electric powered. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm larry beil. that bus turned into a ball of flames and there's not much left of it tonight. two mechanics got hurt tonight, we have a response from the company that makes that bus, that same company recently filed for bankruptcy. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez. with the new developments out of the south bay to two mechanics

suffered smoke inhalation after this battery electric bus burst into flames. >> this happened friday afternoon at a maintenance yard in san jose with a bus that was out of service as the transportation agency said, the two mechanics were working on repairs when the fire started. >> they immediately tried to extend the fire. that didn't work. it started spreading quickly and so they physically pushed the bus out of the bus bay to try and avoid any further damage to other employees or or to the bus bay. and then the fire just engulfed the bus. >> the san jose fire department said no structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. vta said the bus that caught fire was one of ten battery electric proterra busses. proterra an electric bus manufacturer and pioneer in the industry, was founded in 2004. they released this statement to abc7 news. the cause of this incident has not been confirmed, but the preliminary information indicates that the fire

originated near the front of the vehicle. there was no indication that the fire involved the vehicle's battery system. in august, the ceo announced the company has voluntarily filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, but would still operate. >> but we don't know exactly what the impact will be. we do have other busses that can take their place. they're not electric busses. we have taken all of our electric busses out of service. >> for now, there's a state mandate to transition public busses to 100% zero emission by 2040. >> we do have 92 busses coming in the next several months that are hybrid electric. they're not all electric busses, but we are trying to work on that zero emission goal in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> new at 11 oakland police investigating a bizarre incident that unfolded around 745 tonight on e street near 94th avenue. >> we're told a person wanted in connection with a shooting vandalized several homes, then

broke into one and set that house on fire. and the homeowner says the suspect for shot their way in and went into their son's room. at that point, the owners say they ran for safety. they had they did know the person who broke in. oakland police did detain a person of interest and nobody was hurt. happening now, the labor day getaway well underway tonight, whether it's by plane or by car. we saw some packed roads in the bay area and apparently people also have an itch to fly because the tsa is expecting around 14 million people will pass through airports between now and wednesday. here's abc seven news reporter tim johns. >> ahead of the holiday weekend. many gas stations around the bay area were packed friday. >> can you stay off the road tomorrow? >> now on the way to l.a. lauren khan was filling up her tank in millbrae ahead of a trip to visit family in socal. >> triple a says they're anticipating a 4% rise from last year in labor day. travelers on the nation's roadways. >> we started seeing really before memorial day this return to pre-pandemic numbers or close to pre-pandemic numbers. >> thousands of people around

the bay area are expected to hit the roads this holiday weekend, but they won't just be traveling by car. they'll also be going by air and airports nationwide and are expected to be packed. >> what we've learned through our research is travelers prioritize travel in their savings and in their budgets. >> henry hertefeld is the travel industry analyst based in san francisco. he says if you'll be traveling through an airport over the next few days, having patience is essential. >> give yourself more time to get through airport security. even if you have tsa precheck. >> the tsa is expecting to screen over 14 million passengers in airports around the country through wednesday. sfo though, is one of the few major airports in the nation still below 2019 levels, something that could be seen at the departures hall friday night when i was checking in online and it got like an offer. >> hey, do you want to change your flight? do you want to bid for compensation or something and go to a later flight? so i was expecting it to be much more packed and i got here like three, four hours early. there's it's a ghost town.

most of them to explicit to show here it's literally every weekend a benzinger is an attorney whose relative lives on camille circle. he's now representing approximately 12 units. >> this is an unlicensed commercial activity right in the middle of a group of townhomes. it's flabbergasting. it's unbelievable. >> abc7 news obtained video of people coming and going from the complex during the middle of the night at the base of the stairs. individuals wearing shirts that say security escorting them to the party by flashlight. it's mild for me. i don't want to live like this. >> it's why this resident agreed to talk with me but asked me not to show her face because of concerns for her safety. >> for months, she says she called 311911 and even police directly. when you're calling, what are you telling the 911 call operator? >> i'm telling them that there is a strip club at at this particular unit. and what is the response of the 911 call operator when you say there's a strip club going on at this

unit, basically they take the call and they tell me that they will deal with it. >> but she says despite her efforts every weekend, the parties continue to police come out for each of those calls. >> i have no idea. >> the i-team asked san jose police to look up several case numbers provided to us by the resident, a spokesperson said. they were either noise or music complaints. i asked further about three calls to nine one 1 in 1 weekend, one on august 18th at 4:42 a.m, a spokesman told the i-team police did not respond to that 911 call because the supervisor request the information be turned over to the bureau of investigations for follow up, police said. another call on august 19th at 458, a m was solely a music complaint and there was no police response in a final call to 911 on august 20th at 4:08 a.m, san jose police said communications personnel called the reporting party back for an update on the noise disturbance prior to dispatching officers when unable to reach the caller for a status update. the call was canceled in

a follow up email to abc7 news, a spokesperson referred to the noise disturbance as a low priority call. >> there isn't the sense of urgency that i think this kind of a situation is entitled to. >> a san jose police spokesperson told the i-team. public information officer and other department personnel were not available for interviews by email. the spokesperson told the i-team bpd was first made aware of the allegation in early august and that an investigation into what they call the illegal business is open and ongoing. but the person hosting the parties told me he's not doing anything illegal. i called the number listed on the invitations and spoke with someone for 22 minutes who identified himself as fresh. he told me the private parties are for friends and family and that his mom, who lived in the townhome recently passed away. he denied charging money to get in or for bottle service and told abc7 news that 204 bottles referred to tokens, not dollars. he said the exotic dancers are entertainers, family and friends, not employees. he called these security guards his

brothers who work a graveyard shift at club bars and that if they're outside it's because they're smoking. if it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, it's a duck. >> it's a strip club. >> in addition to sdpd residents filed complaints with other agencies, san jose's code enforcement deputy director told the i-team code enforcement has opened a case to investigate any potential zoning, building or municipal code violations within its purview. also, that it is coordinating with sfpd on the issues at the townhome, then coordinate, take care of this problem. >> now before it gets worse. >> the department of alcoholic beverage control told the i-team it could not confirm or deny if it's investigating. but reiterate stated that it looks into every complaint received also that the sale of alcoholic beverages in california without an appropriate license is a misdemeanor violation of the business and professions code. an attorney for the homeowners association told me he had no comment. enforcement aside, a person who told me she's been helping the landlord set an eviction process is underway,

but also takes time. texting me, quote, we are doing everything we can to get these people out asap. while we are waiting for the court clerk to process the paperwork. an effort the party's host may be aware of. when i shared neighbors concerns, he apologized and offered to keep the music down. he also said he expects to leave within the next 20 days. thursday afternoon, a sheriff's deputy walked up the stairs and placed an eviction notice on the window, giving the people inside until september sixth to leave or be forced out. in the meantime, people who live here are at their wits end. i, i really feel traumatized by it. >> this is not safe. it's dangerous. it only takes one time for things to go terribly wrong here. >> again, according to that eviction notice, whoever is inside hosting these parties has until wednesday to get out or be removed in the newsroom for the it. melanie woodrow, abc seven news. now to get in touch with the i-team you can call the number on your screen or go to abc7 news.com slash i-team.

old mother of six known for her youtube show eight passengers, was arrested earlier this week for abusing some of those children. the story came to light when a malnourished child escaped it and went to a neighbor's house looking for food and water. police say the child's wrists were duct taped and had wounds across his body from being tied up. investigators say a second malnourished child was found inside the home. new at 11 republicans plan to force a vote on sb 44 known as alexander arias law on tuesday in the california assembly. that law would require courts to give formal warning to convicted fentanyl dealers that that drug can kill. and if they sell it again and somebody dies, they could face murder charges. that bill had been blocked by a committee earlier this year. alexander's law is named after a young woman who died of fentanyl poisoning in 2019. we're about three months into the crackdown on fentanyl dealing in san francisco. the question is, is it really working? the numbers are pouring in when it comes to tackling this crisis, especially

in the tenderloin. abc seven news reporter tara campbell sorts through the numbers and also spoke to a woman whose son is among those arrested. and three months into a multi-agency effort taking aim at san francisco's open air drug market and new numbers show a big bump in dealers being arrested. >> my first thoughts when i hear these numbers going up like this is. thank you. because that means that they're putting pressure on the drug dealers to get these deadly drugs off the streets. >> jackie berlin's son, corey, is on the streets battling addiction to fentanyl. >> it makes it harder for my son to access the drugs which maybe puts a little pressure on him and others to get an opportunity to think. maybe they just want to be done with this san francisco police arresting 300 drug dealers since the end of may, while california highway patrol and federal law enforcement report another 100 drug arrests. >> what is encouraging to me is less about the numbers and more about the cooperate nation, because ultimately that's where

we're going to make progress. >> police also focusing efforts on getting drug users off the streets. san francisco police making 450 public intoxication arrests. jackie berlin's son is one of them. he was held for 12 hours, as he said, he just slept most of the time, which actually he that's something that he needs is a safe place to sleep. and supervisor matt dorsey wants to see more money going into helping drug users get treatment in jail, calling on the mayor to redirect millions, set aside for a handful of resource centers. >> it's hard to make the case that we should be spending the amount of money that we have budgeted for this for a voluntary drop in center when we have an involuntary population probably in more dire need of medical care. >> the city is on pace for the deadliest year yet amid the fentanyl crisis, and berlin is banking on the crackdown, helping to slow it down so it puts more and more pressure on

on the addicts to start thinking more about this isn't a way of life that they want to stay into. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> if you or somebody you know is struggling with drug addiction, you could find a list of local resources on our website that will help abc7 news.com/take action. san francisco. a firm is set to lease out the entire building that was formerly home to slack headquarters. according to the san francisco chronicle, anthropic is this fast growing ai company behind what will be one of the largest local deals since the pandemic. the 230,000ft■!s sublease is in the salesforce transit center. salesforce owns slack and is also an investor in anthropic. that deal has not been officially announced, but hawaii's governor, josh green, says the number of people missing from the maui fires could drop from 388 to fewer than 100 initially, more than a thousand people were considered unaccounted for based on reports from friends and family. officials narrowed that list to

388 names that they considered credibly missing. that included names of many who were actually alive or are known to have died. either way, after authorities published those names, more than 200 people promptly came forward with information on those listed and firefighters who volunteered to help with the relief efforts following the maui fires were welcomed home to san francisco today. these members of the asian firefighters association spent a week on maui. >> my family's from lahaina. i spent all my summers on lahaina. these guys stepped up, were right there willing to do anything. and we're talking digging through ashes to find someone's keys to their car, to their great grandmother's hawaiian bracelet that's melted hands and knees in the ashes, whatever it took. these guys showed up. so thank you guys for coming. >> and they helped with distribution of water supplies and basic necessities across what is a devastated community. all right. heading straight into

the holiday weekend. you have plans. you want to know what the weather is going to be? abc seven news meteorologist sandy patel here now. hi, sandy. >> hi there, larry. yeah, it's going to feel like fall just like it did today. hey, it is the start of meteorological fall today. and let me show you these live pictures tonight. you will notice there are a lot of clouds around from all of our tower cameras. the different vantage points. here's a look at your holiday weekend. isolated showers tomorrow morning. still a chance on sunday. these are not game changers as we head towards labor day, it'll brighten up and it will turn milder for most areas, low 60s to mid 80s. speaking of bright good air quality, so smoke is out of here and that good air quality for your outdoor plans continues all three days. as you look at the air quality forecast right now on live doppler seven, you can see all the cloud cover. there's an area of low pressure that's been just spinning here and it has been producing thunderstorms up in northern california and the sierra right now. they've been seeing rain many parts shefs have been

picking up measurable rain, half an inch to an inch for some of the wetter spots like redding picking up over an inch of rain. and that's all in association with this upper level low that brought us the cooler weather today. breezy conditions. it's not going to really budge much for the next two days as it sits around here. that's what's going to provide the fuel for thunderstorms. if you're heading up to tahoe and gusty winds tomorrow. so same thing on sunday, but by labor day, it'll quiet down 67 degrees, sunny and warmer and tuesdays up into the 70s for the afternoon. right now, 5060s we have good sleeping weather for you tonight from our san jose camera. you can see the clouds are stacked up, mostly cloudy, overnight, isolated shower chance tomorrow and sunday and cooler than average for the holiday weekend. so hour by hour, we go. if you are going to get away tomorrow morning, an isolated shower around 5 a.m, not out of the question in continuing around 8 a.m. but notice all the cloud cover a couple of sprinkles in the afternoon and the east bay and then we head into sunday. and

have illusion. as the guests of our show, you're going to be seated in round tables. you're going to be part of the show. and to me, that's really the exciting part. it's an amazing opportunity for us to continue our craft and carry on with what we've been doing with live performances. and we can't wait to put on a show. we can't wait to put on the show first and foremost. but but i think the fact that it's a wine tasting experience, we wanted it to be birthed in a place like napa for that particular reason. and then around the neck and bam, bam, bam. >> there you go. >> tell us tell us your experience. >> i have experience watching you on dancing with the stars. >> great. i have experience in high school productions. >> i danced in college, but only freshman year on the drill team. wait can you hit a drill? >> beat a drill team? can you. >> can we hit this? can we hit it? >> hey, you can absolutely hit it. hey, hey. >> let's go. let's go. >> we are in the bay area

talking about incredible opportunity that val and i have is to present a show called savor after hours. we're bringing it to jam cellars ballroom in downtown napa. i think wine in general just connects a lot of people. we want to give it a new take on the art of wine. presenting ocean. we want to celebrate the napa valley culture and the culture of wine and obviously everything that comes with it. we love the bay area, northern california, so it's wonderful to be here. all throughout the summer. different wines and each one comes with a whole cabaret performance, kind of immersing you into the flavors of that wine and all of that performance. we love breaking performance. we love breaking the wall between the k that we had a great transitioning from television back to live performances on a bigger scale, and we value that relationship a lot,

and so a live audience is always an incredible opportunity, it's a beautiful experience. we do a lot of partner dancing. and today we'll show you a little salsa combo. jobina: okay. i will be demonstrating the... who's part? the girl part, obviously. -okay, i got you. -why you look at me, like, from underneath there-- how are you going to demonstrate the guy part? -wow! -ooh... you know what... -i don't discriminate my parts. -thank you! thank you. maks: our parents made us love each other. they kept telling us that when they die, we'll only have each other, and for little, tiny creatures that we were back then, six years apart... it left an impact. oh, my god, i really have to love him, and then, little did i know i didn't have to love him all the time. i could have not liked him sometimes, you know? but here we are. -um, it is a huge honor... -[chuckling] ...to work alongside this-- this man. um, yeah, no, we bring out, i think, a lot of great qualities in each other, especially on stage,
