not many people here, but give it a few hours, and it will be packed. days after hurricane idalia crossed over major airports down south, the nation is traveling and in big numbers. across the country on the roads and in the sky, a holiday weekend mass exodus. >> kind of a headache this morning. >> reporter: tsa telling abc news an estimated 2.7 million travelers were screened friday and another 2.5 million will be flying today. >> we were already ahead of last year's volumes, which was out ahead of 2019 volumes, and this year it will be record-breaking volumes, as well. >> reporter: more than 330,000 passengers traveling through atlanta's hartsfield-jackson international airport friday, some waiting more than two hours just to get through security. 290 flights were canceled across the u.s. another 6,000 delayed friday. others heading to the pump and hitting the highway. oil and gas experts say the overall gasoline demand this summer failed to match previous years. according to aaa, the national gas price average is at $3.82, two cents cheaper than a year ago but still seven cents higher

than last month and will likely stay at the same price through the holiday weekend. as for the best and worst times to travel, today, the heaviest traffic will be between 10 this morning and 6 tonight. for your trip home monday, aaa says, if you don't want to be in the thick of it, travel after 7:00 p.m. yeah, and it's a little bit of a bummer to think about when you're traveling home just as this beautiful day gets under way, but if you don't do that well in traffic and get a little anxious, annoyed at the person next to you, now is not a bad time to think about it. >> gio: phil, all those folks flocking to east coast beaches face a warning now about potentially dangerous conditions in the water. >> reporter: you're right, gio. we're talking about rip currents. you know them well. you've covered them, and our meteorologists say they go from the northeast all the way down to florida up and down the east coast, and they can be scary, dangerous, and obviously even deadly. the red cross says there are two ways to get out of them.

swim parallel to the shore, and then eventually you will be out of it. if you can't do that, stay steady and tread water, and you'll be out of the rip current. the key is you can't panic. when you panic and start to fight it, that's when it gets dangerous. >> gio: do not panic. phil lipof, thank you so much. for a look at what's causing rip currents and how long they're going to last, let's check in with our expert, danielle breezy from wkrn. good morning, danielle. >> reporter: and good morning to you, gio. yes, we're talking about the tropics, very active this morning, lots of tropical systems in the atlantic ocean, and that's leading to those dangerous rip currents. take a look. we have post tropical cyclone idalia bringing tropical storm force winds to bermuda, also making those dangerous rip currents up and down the east coast. remember, one to two hours before and after low tide is when it's most dangerous. that's going to happen during the 4:00 hour this afternoon. and, by the way, those large swells leading to coastal flooding from the baltimore/ d.c. area all the way down to jacksonville, florida. gio?

>> gio: all right, age we'll be watching that. danielle, thank you. we turn to the frightening moments during takeoff for a delta airlines plane. flames and smoke seen shooting from an engine. abc's ines de la cuetara is in london with more. good morning, ines. >> reporter: good morning, gio. that's right, and this was a delta flight heading from prague to jfk. it took off earlier today, and airport webcam video shows the plane's engine failing shortly after takeoff. you can see something is just not right with the plane leaving a trail of black smoke as it's flying. the plane turned back after about 20 minutes and safely landed back in prague. delta saying there were over 200 passengers on board and that no one was injured. the plane was later inspected by airport firefighters and dragged to a parking stand. the airport says its main runway was closed for about 30 minutes, and delta now saying in a statement that it apologizes to its customers for the delay after an engine performance issue was observed on the aircraft adding, quote, nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people.

it's still unclear what caused the engine problem, and the faa says it will be investigating the incident. janai? >> janai: scary situation. glad everyone is okay. ines, we appreciate you. back here at home now to the urgent evacuations in a part of east texas as a wildfire rages out of control. lileana pearson from our station ktrk joins us with more. good morning, lileana. >> reporter: good morning. right now i'm in walker county about an hour north of houston where a massive wildfire is burning through more than 3,000 acres and is just 10% contained. emergency management and fire crews telling us that it is a fast, extreme moving fire. yesterday they told us that around 4:00 p.m. it was 100 acres, and then an hour later, more than 500 acres. 10:00 p.m. it was over a thousand, and as i mentioned now this morning, 3,000 acres, just 10% contained. it is working its way through trees and underbrush in a rural

part of the community, however, there's still plenty of farmland and homes in the area. because of that, evacuations have been suggested. at this point we don't know a cause for the fire, however, texas is dealing with extreme drought conditions, making the work to contain this fire that much harder. guys? >> janai: after so much heat there just rapidly growing and still out of control. our thanks to lileana down there in texas. now to the nypd using drone surveillance this holiday weekend to monitor crowds and watch for any potential problems. abc's derricke dennis is in manhattan with what critics are saying and the mayor's defense of the program. derricke, good morning. >> reporter: janai, good morning to you. you know, drones just aren't for recreation anymore. police are using them to be their eye in the sky over large gatherings, but can they show too much, and are innocent people being unfairly caught on camera? this morning, the nypd is raising privacy concerns among some new york city residents ahead of two local parades, j'ouvert and the west indian day

parade, that usually attract millions of spectators. the department announcing it will use remote-controlled drones equipped with high-tech cameras for crowd surveillance. the move coming in response to recent complaints about large gatherings in the city. >> if there's a large crowd, large party in the backyard, we will utilize our assets to check on the party. >> reporter: the plan drawing backlash from privacy and civil liberty advocates who argue the tactic will target minority communities and may violate surveillance laws. >> this is incredibly invasive and may be unconstitutional. we're not going to see drones flying in my neighborhood, but we are going to see drones flying in the same neighborhoods that the nypd has always targeted. >> reporter: the city's mayor vehemently defending the drones. >> instead of the police having to respond and look at those, they're going to utilize drones from a safe distance up, not down flying in someone's

backyard to see what they have on the grill. >> reporter: according to research from the aclu, there are currently 1,400 police departments in the united states using drone technology including cities like santa monica, california, chicago, and boston. last month, the nypd put theirs to use after a botched gaming console giveaway promoted by an influencer erupted in chaos in manhattan. new york city's mayor says he's been impressed with the technology and its ability to show a crowd in realtime remotely allowing officers to assess a situation and mitigate a problem, but, gio, clearly there are concerns. >> gio: concerns, indeed. all right, derricke dennis, thank you. now to the deadly shooting of a pregnant woman by police. body camera video was just released, and now her family is calling for the officer to be indicted for her death and the death of her unborn daughter, and a warning here, the video is disturbing. alex presha has the story. >> say her name. >> all: ta'kiya.

>> reporter: this morning, outrage in ohio over what's shown in this newly released video, the moment a mother of two small children 7 months pregnant with a third is suddenly shot less than 30 seconds after being approached by officers. 21-year-old ta'kiya young seen getting in her car at kroger's grocery store last week when an officer from the blendon township police department attempts to stop her. an employee suspected her of shoplifting. >> out of the car. >> why? >> they said you stole stuff. do not leave. get out of the car. >> i didn't. >> then get out. >> reporter: young saying it was other girls who were responsible, meanwhile, a second officer positions himself in front of her car aiming his gun at her through the windshield. the young mother even asking, are you going to shoot me? >> then get out. get out of the car. >> reporter: she then turns her steering wheel and inches into the officer's path. that officer firing a single shot. >> get out of the car. get out of the car. >> reporter: killing young and her unborn child. her car slowly rolling and crashing into a brick wall.

blendon township now turning the case over to the investigation. >> a key question here is whether by taking a position in front of the car, the police officer placed himself in direct jeopardy and increased the likelihood that a lethal encounter would ensue. >> reporter: young's family is calling for action against that officer. >> there were two people murdered that day, her and her little baby girl. >> reporter: the police union urging patience. >> based on my training and experience based on what i saw in that video, i believe i understand why it could be justified. >> reporter: guys, we're expecting protests and vigils like the one behind me throughout the holiday weekend, and while that officer who fired his service pistol is still on administrative leave, the chief is not releasing the names of either officer involved saying that because they are the possible victims of an assault, they have a right to anonymity under ohio law. guys? >> whit: all right. alex presha for us, thank you. turning now to the big change in student loans, interest begins accruing again

after the covid-era reprieve just ended. abc's white house correspondent maryalice parks is in washington with what it means for borrowers and what the biden administration is trying to do to help lessen the burden. maryalice, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. tens of millions of americans are adjusting their family budgets right now, bracing for this reality that their student loan debt is once again collecting interest and that payments are due next month. after more than three years and eight extensions, the pause on student loan payments is officially ending. this morning, interest on federal student loans once again accruing, and payments are due again in october. >> i'm alarmed, and i'm nervous. i don't really know where to go from here, to be honest. the interest is just, like, it keeps you trapped. >> reporter: over 43 million americans hold student loans and average around $30,000 in student loan debt. others owe much more like

annalese eriksen, a dentist in the bay area who has over $400,000 in debt. >> i think my largest loan is about $70,000, and that's on a 7.6% interest rate. >> reporter: the payments are set to restart just months after the supreme court struck down president biden's initial student loan forgiveness plan saying the administration overstepped its authority by forgiving debt without congressional approval. >> we'll use every tool at our disposal to get you the student debt relief you need and reach your dreams. >> reporter: the president vowing not to give up on borrowers and responded to the supreme court decision with new programs to provide some relief including a 12-month grace period where a missed payment this year will not lead to default, new plans for those who had fallen into default, $39 billion in canceled loans to correct past errors, and a new

program capping loan payments, and that new repayment program is pretty expansive. experts say that some people could see their required monthly payment cut in half. others might qualify for no monthly payment, and it changes some interest. some interest will be forgiven or erased if the monthly payment doesn't cover all the interest owed, but, whit, people have to sign up for that new program. >> whit: a range of options, but a lot to look into there. maryalice, while we have you, though, there are major changes for snap benefits, the food assistance program. what do people need to know about this? >> reporter: big changes. starting this month people up to 50 years old will have to show that they are working or studying at least 80 hours a month to qualify for that food assistance. that age bumps to 52 and then 54 over the next year, but people that are experiencing homelessness, veterans, and young adults who have transitioned out of foster care, they're exempt. janai? >> gio: all right. i'll take it from here. thank you, maryalice.

appreciate it. and president biden now is touting the latest jobs report as another sign of success of his administration despite higher interest rates. the labor department reporting the economy added 187,000 jobs last month, which is slightly more than the expected. the unemployment rate rose to 3.8%, the highest since early last year with the most jobs added in health care, leisure and hospitality, and construction. whit? >> whit: gio, we turn now to maui where weeks after those devastating wildfires there are signs of hope following a day meant for emotional and spiritual healing. abc's zohreen shah joins us now from maui with more. zohreen, good morning. >> reporter: whit, one of the vigils took place right where we're standing in front of this mural, and for many people here, their art and their actions are rooted in thousands of years of culture and tradition, and that's what we saw yesterday. over three weeks after the devastating wildfire that killed at least 115 people, the island

coming together in what's known as remembrance day honoring those lost in the deadliest fire in modern u.s. history. >> with so much loss taking place amongst our friends and family and we all feel completely helpless. we feel devastated, not for them but with them. >> reporter: it was a day of spiritual healing. ♪ as the sun passed overhead at noon, hundreds gathered to recognize the creation of the hawaiian islands, and as the sun set in the west, many chanting to honor their ancestors and the people that are left. >> we pray god will help us and restore us and heal us in these hard times. >> reporter: healing through -- [ speaking in a non-english language ] ♪ >> there's great hope that through coming together, leaning on each other, loving on each

other, that we can make it through this. >> reporter: many communities now descending to the same vigils finding ways to move forward together. i spent the last week here, and you can see how that aloha spirit just binds everyone together, and there's also some positive news about that massive banyan tree that the fire got just so close to. it's at the center of lahaina. there's now reports that tree actually may be on the mend. some believe that amid the mourning and the grief, it shows that there is hope. whit? >> whit: that is encouraging news, zohreen, thank you. i used to play around that banyan tree when i was a kid and would visit maui, and we got to see it up close after the fires. a lot of damage, but there is hope. they've been finding live tissue within the tree. >> gio: in the roots. >> whit: exactly. they're watering it every day, so some small sliver of hope as they're looking to rebuild. we do want to transition, shift gears, get back to a check

of the weather. danielle breezy from other nashville affiliate wkrn is joining us once again. danielle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, whit. we've been talking about that monsoonal rain out over the las vegas area. you got to see this video. it's incredible. look at this. the way the water is just raging, you can see that roads, the sidewalks, guys having to jump on the park benches. another road turning into rushing water. 1 to 3 inches has fallen in las vegas in the last 24 hours. that's more than they had during tropical storm hilary, and that's all due again to that moisture coming off the pacific ocean, and flood watches up for four different states including the las vegas area. now, what we're expecting is one to two inches of rain this weekend.

911 responders and their horrifying descriptions of that child and the mom of that kid touting herself to millions as being a parent coach that others should emulate. >> and my kids are literally starving. i hesitate to say this, because it's going to sound like i'm a mean barbarian. >> reporter: this morning a utah mom influencer arrested facing six felony counts of aggravated child abuse. for the first time we're hearing emergency responders as they see one of ruby franke's children after he allegedly escaped through a window. >> the male does have duct tape around each ankle. he's not telling us why and there's sores around his wrists and ankles. he's becoming, or correction, bp emotional regarding the child's health. >> reporter: arrest documents saying the child escaped to a neighbor's home. the 12-year-old child described by that neighbor in a phone call

to police as emaciated and malnourished with open wounds. court documents also describing deep lacerations from being tied up with a rope. >> saying there's two sisters back at the home as well. >> reporter: police say they also found franke's 10-year-old daughter malnourished. franke is known for her strict parenting advice to millions of tiktok and youtube users. the mom of six previously received criticism online for some parenting tactics seen in a now deleted youtube video saying she has kept food from her kids. >> i'm not even going to let you eat breakfast until you get your chores done. >> reporter: experts say franke's videos, even the deleted ones, could be used against her in court. >> if you're the prosecutor and the detectives, you may really be happy you have that because it could well corroborate some of these charges that the government is alleging. >> reporter: and four of her six kids are in child custody. the other two are adults. it's unclear when her first court appearance will be, but likely all eyes will be on her when it happens, janai.

>> gio: welcome back to "gma" with a warning about scammers posting phony listings about homes for rent. homeowners are shocked to see people showing up on their doorsteps eager to move in and abc's em nguyen has more on what's going on here. good morning, em. >> reporter: good morning, gio. the fbi says rental scammers are on the hunt for people desperate to save some cash amid relentlessly high home prices and we caught up with one couple who told us they suddenly started getting dozens of visits not long after they bought their new home. >> almost every week we were getting somebody coming by knocking on the door. >> reporter: arlington, virginia, homeowners pete and kate felt forced to put a sign out front warning prospective

renters, their home is not for rent. you are being lied to by a scammer. >> two people that we know of and think there are more we don't know of put down deposits on a fraudulent scheme. >> reporter: the couple purchased their home last year, but shortly after, they were inundated with messages from interested renters. they immediately flagged the arlington county police department of the scheme, and they're not alone. in boston, the fbi first flagged their rising problem last year amid the incremental rise in rent saying they've seen a significant increase in the amount of money being lost by people who are desperate for a good deal. ashley reese thought she found the perfect house for rent in an atlanta suburb from an online listing until she handed over a $2,000 deposit to a scammer and never got the keys. >> how could i get into the house if, you know, it wasn't his? >> reporter: in fact, nationwide the bureau reported nearly 12,000 victims of real estate fraud last year resulting in a total loss of nearly $400 million.

the couple says they're disappointed their local police department's investigation never tracked down the scammers. the department telling abc news, the perpetrators are often difficult to identify. without the identification of solvability factors, the case has been listed as inactive. >> one of the trends that we notice of people that were coming up and knocking on our door was these are people for whom typically english is not their first language. it was heartbreaking to have to relay to them that they had been scammed. >> reporter: the better business bureau warning consumers that even though the photos and price may be right, to do their homework on those rental listings before agreeing to anything. >> it's really important to do that due diligence before you give up any personal information. they're saying it's renting for a thousand dollars, and it's a four-bedroom, three bathroom house, definitely look it up. >> reporter: some other tips to consider, beware of wiring money before signing any documents, those lease documents. scammers also tend not to meet
