6:27 am
the grapes than some of our sparkling wine producing neighbors here who are harvesting right now. it's the 199th vintage which chris's wife , robin, is the executive director of the sonoma valley vintners and growers alliance. she says the cool start to the year delayed grapes from blooming. she expects the harvest to last into november. everyone's ready to get to work and also thinking how far into the holidays will we be picking ? despite the delay, they aren't expecting much fallout. she says growers will still be employed in the fall, helping pick grapes and the delay should not affect the quality of the wine. some of these late harvests have actually yielded incredible wines, so. so historically speaking, we're looking forward to matching that. they say the rain will actually benefit the valley in years to come. you know, we're looking at the green grape vines behind us. they are dependent on water. so more water the better. there's of course, a line where it's too much, but we haven't we haven't really hit that hot and dry weather the last few years. cool and wet weather this year. i asked him, how do they jump

through these ongoing hurdles when it comes to weather? they say it takes team efforts at every single winery to be able to overcome and produce good wine. and when it comes to the heat, like we're experiencing today, they say they have their wine pickers go out in the morning to assess the grapes before the hot weather arrives in sonoma. ryan curry, abc seven news. well still to come on abc seven mornings, a stormy scene in nevada. authorities now reporting one death at the famous burning man festival. we'll be right back.

60s. san jose 66 half moon bay cooler at 57 degrees and this time in san jose. it's also a great start right now as we show you live shot of 280 in highway 17 in santa rosa, nevada. it's currently 55. napa fairfield 63. concord and livermore in the low 60s is kind of gloomy as we look from emeryville towards the bay bridge. san francisco not even visible right now. so what you need to know for the forecast is that clouds linger again today. we still have that chance of isolated showers. slight chance , mostly cloudy overnight with drizzle possible again. and then finally, more sunshine for labor day. so it's all due to this area of low pressure that's kind of just been stuck in this area and that's continuing to bring us the cloud cover and that slight chance of rain. it is also bringing a thunderstorm threat to nevada, mars too slight, even enhanced near the nevada utah border here. so they'll be getting some rain and possible thunderstorms today. again but for us generally, just
6:50 am
a lot of cloud cover and cooler than average temperatures by this afternoon, we will get some breaks in the cloud cover, but we could see some spotty showers mainly in the north bay where we saw a few hundredths of an inch yesterday. tomorrow morning, the clouds push in once again and we could see some drizzle mainly near the beaches and the coastline. but then finally, tomorrow afternoon, notice we get more sunshine except along the coast. so inland areas will warm up into the 80s. but for today, look for temperatures to be close to yesterday's numbers. so that means 60 at the beaches around the bay 70s and inland areas hitting the mid to upper 70s. it's going to be comfortable. antioch 77 actually. it's nice that it's a little bit cooler than normal. santa rosa, 76, san francisco 69. san jose 75 degrees. lows tonight. generally in the 50s to near 60 with the extensive cloud cover, low clouds and fog moving into san francisco. so tomorrow, temperatures hold steady
6:51 am
generally around the bay and at the coast. but inland areas will hit some mid 80s in some of those warmer spots. here's an example. in livermore, our average highs 87. so even though we're below normal, it's actually more comfortable at 77. then we warm up through the workweek closer to average by the end of next week. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so the cloudy conditions continue with a very slight chance of rain. labor day will be brighter and that means milder temperatures for inland areas. but notice around the bay and at the coast, not too much change. a slight warm up towards the end of the week but inland areas for next weekend possibly hitting 90 degrees. so tomorrow is a good day for the barbecue weather. yeah the barbecue, the pool, the beach, wherever you plan to go. yeah, it'll be nice. still cloudy at the beaches, though. okay. good to know, francis. thank you. well, a secluded open space with a history dating back to the cold war. just open to the public. it's called coyote ridge, and it's located near morgan hill.

holds plenty of other unique experiences as well. abc7 news anchor dan ashley has the story . soaring above the new coyote ridge open space in santa clara county may be the easiest way to take in the vibrant colors splashed along the rugged hilltops, but making those views accessible to visitors is an engineering success story. years in the making. so this here, this is serpentine in this is a serpentine rock which is filled with asbestos. supervisor technician andres campuzano says crews hand dug specific trails to avoid disturbing asbestos laden rock and the work didn't stop there. so we did hand build one section of trail that eliminated the steepest section of the of the ranch road to just try to create a better, better user experience. the result is access to a steep open space that can be covered with native wildflowers in spring, home to the bay checkerspot butterfly and other unique species, some

endangered, others simply magnified decent just myself, the wildlife i've seen out here is burrowing owls, golden eagles , bald eagles, tullio, elk, coyotes, bobcats. but if the open space is colorful, so is its history. tucked back in the hill is the site of united technologies, the aerospace company once built and tested rocket engines for nasa and the military. after a destructive explosion, the company eventually closed the site, providing a historic opportunity . and so it took conservationists negotiating with united technologies as they started to close down operation here to get this property transferred from what was a cold war relic into a conservation success story. general manager andrea mckenzie says the area is unique for other reasons, including its geography. located across from the similarly named coyote valley to the west, the area's provided a critical link for wildlife migrating between

the santa cruz mountains and the diablo range, particularly mountain lion, where of creatures like mountain lion do not have room to roam, so they become stuck there in the santa cruz mountains and genetically isolated as crews work to put the finishing touches on shade stations and other installations, the authority is preparing to open the coyote ridge to the public. they say some areas are so sensitive they'll require visitors to register for special access, butterfly passes and use precautions like spraying their shoes. but the reward will be five miles of hiking trails winding through a unique and critical habitat. these lands belong to you. they belong to the public. you helped us purchase them. you will hike on them. you will take care of them because this is part of our future. an open space with a fascinating past and an exciting future for visitors. dan ashley, abc7
