60s, 9:00, we'll see mid 60s inland to upper 70s by noontime upper 60s. bay shore and by the afternoon just some patchy fog along our beaches. nice afternoon mid 80s near average for our inland valleys around the bay about 76 in hayward and some 60s at our coast. jobina >> thank you lisa. good morning everybody. we're going to start in hayward where we're following this crash involving multiple vehicles. and according to the chp, this was caused by road rage, southbound 8-80 past a street speeds still around 35mph. and there's also a second crash in the backup now. so that's what happens when you see all that stop and go traffic. tracy to dublin 47 minutes. antioch to concord, 25. so we're seeing that westbound for a commute begin to slow. we also have a crash around the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights came on at 534. so expect some minor delays in that area but you are nice and clear in san jose. as we wrap up showing you 87. kumasi thanks jobina. >> new this morning update at covid. booster shots could be coming out as soon as next week.

a new data shows moderna's booster is effective at fighting the new omicron variant. abc seven news reporter ryan curry joining us live in walnut creek with a look at the findings. hi, ryan. >> good morning. that new shot could be available as soon as the end of next week once it gets approval from the cdc and fda coming right as the time when we expect the weather to get colder and when experts say the case count could be rising. moderna releasing the new results this morning from its lab test about the new covid booster. they say the new booster creates more antibodies designed to fight the newer omicron sub-variant. they say it also offers additional protection against the subvariants currently making up majority of the cases in the united states. but dern officials say those subvariants may be more capable of causing infection in people who were previously infected or have had older covid vaccines. they also say it doesn't appear to be more dangerous than previous strains. we've been covering the recent

rise in cases for a few weeks, but health experts say the good news. we are very capable of handling it now. it's tough to say covid is back when in reality it never really left. >> we're just much better prepared to deal with it. >> the fda still has to approve this vaccine that is expected to come within the next week. the cdc will also have to sign up. we are also expecting to hear from pfizer about their new covid booster as well. both could be options for people as we enter the fall and winter seasons. we're live in walnut creek, ryan curry, abc seven news. ryan thank you. >> an apparent road rage shooting on the peninsula has left one person hurt. and this morning the shooter is still out there. it happened on i-280 in burlingame last night. sky seven shows the traffic jam at the truesdale drive exit. drivers were backed up to larkspur drive. lanes were closed for about half an hour last night. the chp believes the shooting happened on i-280, near the crystal springs off ramp in san bruno, but they're still working

to determine exactly where it happened. the injured driver then drove to burlingame. he was taken to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries and is expected to recover. >> skyline high school in oakland is going to be closed today. yesterday. a shooting on campus prompted the whole campus to be locked down. the shots rang out near 1115 near the theater area of the campus, which is on skyline boulevard. police told us they detained two male students and they recovered a gun. authorities haven't announced what the motive may have been. thankfully nobody got hurt. the district says there will be resources to help students when they eventually return to campus. >> in the east bay. community groups are now coming up with their own plans to improve public safety in oakland as the city continues to deal with a spike in violence. yesterday, the naacp of oakland released a ten point plan they believe will make the city safer. they're calling for an increase in police officers job training for young people and for license plate readers throughout the city. >> the ten point plan is not really a difficult plan. it's

just one that needs to be in place so we can at least do our best to make public safety a priority. it seems like the priority of our elected leaders is not the same priority of the voters and the taxpayers. >> bishop bob jackson, a member of the local naacp, says many people in the community are scared to be out in their own neighborhoods. at a rally calling for city leaders to do more to combat crime is scheduled for saturday morning. >> man is officially over. and as if the weekend wasn't already hectic for thousands of learners, they faced a lot of muddy traffic trying to leave the nevada desert yesterday, abc seven was in the city of nixon, which is one of the first cities that people pass when they leave the festival. people tell us they left before the so-called man was burned to avoid a rush. but they still got stuck in traffic overnight. >> we left black rock at about 7 p.m. last evening, took us eight hours to get off the playa, and then another probably, what, 3

or 4 to get into nixon. >> heavy traffic is common after burning man, but regulars say this year's backup took a lot longer than usual. an accident along highway 447 made things worse, but that heavy rainfall on friday led to burners being stuck in the mud for days. >> we're learning more about the recovery efforts in santa cruz county after winter storms left a lot of damage behind. county officials held a community forum last night to hear concerns from neighbors and the response from fema to rebuild homes. capitola was hit hard during the storms. officials say they have plans to rebuild the capitola wharf and hope to address rising sea levels. >> labor day weekend is usually a pretty popular time of the year for people to visit capitola. this year, though, wasn't quite the same business owners say fewer visitors were around this year because much of downtown is still under construction after winter storms. >> it wasn't quite as good as a normal labor day weekend. still a little slow. i think people are worried that we're not quite

at least seven people died after a fierce rainstorm battered greece. turkey and bulgaria tuesday. greece's prime minister says they are facing an extreme weather phenomena in the floods come after the country battled a major wildfires over the summer and our past summer here, the second warmest on record since 1940. >> so, yeah, those extremes and records keep tumbling across much of the nation and world actually, as we look at live doppler seven, you can see the fog off the coast, good air quality, our sea breeze returned in earnest yesterday and will continue today. so that's why you see all that blue sky out there, 59 in san leandro. it's 58 in berkeley with a little bit of patchy fog to the north, low 50s novato pacifica dropping to 48 degrees. so certainly some cool numbers. parts of the bay and a live look outside here. exploratorium camera partly cloudy for most of us this

morning. clear inland near average temperatures the next few days and looking at some warming towards the end of the week which includes the weekend. the warmest day should be about sunday. so as we look at friday, even, we're warming up here into the low 90s and we've been will be from the low 70s to the mid 70s over along the bay shore. so a couple of degrees each day as we get into your saturday mid and upper 80s for much of the north bay south bay near average. and then we'll look at those 90s coming into play as we get into saturday inland and then sunday. this should be one of the warmer days. but notice nothing too extreme. we're not looking at any sort of heat risk today. near average, 73 in oakland, 76 in palo alto with some of those low to mid 80s. inland very pleasant out there, reggie. thanks, lisa. >> coming up, a member of the proud boys has given the harshest sentence yet for those involved with the january 6th insurrection. how long he'll be in prison. and as lisa was just mentioning, meteorologists confirm this is the hottest summer ever in the northern

wasn't at the capitol that day, but jobina. this is the longest sentence yet involved in the attack. >> yes, reggie so what we've learned here is enrique tarrio has been sentenced to 22 years for orchestrating his group's attack on the capitol. tarrio was not actually at the capitol that day, but prosecutors say he was still playing a key role, watching the violence unfold and directing his followers. at one point posting to social media, quote, don't leave. federal judge timothy kelly called

tarrio the, quote, ultimate leader of the conspiracy. and earlier said during the sentencing hearing that tarrio's actions were a crime of terrorism. prosecutors had asked for a 33 year sentence in all, 1100 people have been charged for their part in the capitol in insurrection. >> reggie jobina, thank you all. 19 defendants in georgia's election interference case have pleaded not guilty, and they have waived their arraignments that were scheduled for today. that includes former white house chief of staff mark meadows and former president donald trump. the 19 defendants were charged last month in a racketeering indictment for alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in georgia. trump says the investigation is politically motivated. he happening today, lyft employees are being required to go back to the san francisco office. corporate employees have to have a hybrid work schedule, meaning in office at least three days a week. the company believes this will boost the city's economy. tsay.

following the covid 19 pandemic. the barbie phenomenon is creating a big boost for local theaters. >> the balboa theater in san francisco says it's the biggest selling movie in its theaters. almost 100 year history. the theater's owner told the examiner, barbie beat out their record selling black panther from 2018. this is coming after the covid pandemic shuttered so many theaters here in the bay area with more than 2000 theaters closing across the country. barbie is warner brothers highest grossing film worldwide of all time, raking in $1.3 billion a cheeky prank almost tricked some people trying to spend the holiday weekend at a popular beach in chicago. so the prankster posted a sign which read nude beach passes. sign but this is not a nude beach. the city tweeted the counterfeit parks district design is warning people not to fall for this joke. now some people were laughing. city leaders say there was a 1932 resolution that tried to create a nude sunbathing area in that

you. hi, everybody. so i'm tracking the speeds for you for this crash that cleared in hayward that just still is causing major residual delays in the area. southbound 880 past eighth street. your speeds are around 33mph in that spot. elsewhere, i just want to point out the golden gate bridge, because the chp has had a fog advisory issued here throughout the morning. but you can see the bridge just fine. i don't think you'll have any visibility issues going in and out of the north bay. and then lastly here, i'll just give you an overall view of our map and you can see we have a couple of red spots. everything else is pretty clear . thanks, jobina. >> new this morning, two people are recovering after an overnight shooting in san jose. san jose police say multiple suspects in one car led officers on a chase but were eventually taken into custody. this happened on west alma avenue and plum street near several homes and businesses. the two men hurt are expected to be okay. >> new developments, a federal appeals court has weighed in on the clearing of san francisco encampments. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live

in the newsroom with the details. and gloria, you just got a statement from the city attorney's office about the ruling. >> i did. kumasi and according to the chronicle, the city attorney believes the ruling makes it easier for san francisco to conduct encampment sweeps and enforce some local laws, like a ban on sitting or lying on public sidewalks during certain hours. as far as that state went, i just got from the city attorney's office, it says in part, quote, we are pleased that the ninth circuit agreed with the city that the preliminary injunction does not apply to those who refuse shelter or those who have a shelter bed and choose to maintain a tent on the street. this action holds plaintiffs to their statements in court on what it means to be involuntarily homeless, end quote. the court rejected the city's motion to reverse the injunction that blocked officials from clearing encampments when the number of unhoused individuals is greater than the number of available shelter beds. san francisco officials argued that many people on the streets are refused shelter. the coalition

on homelessness says that is not true. they claim the city is simply marking people down as refuse housing because they don't have enough beds. the coalition sued last year, setting off this legal battle, and they say that yesterday's ruling is a win for them since the injunction was not reverse it. and of course, we know this issue about homelessness has been a big topic in san francisco recently. sales force ceo marc benioff recently told the chronicle that if this dreamforce is impacted by the current situation with homelessness and drug use and may be the last dreamforce in the city and the city attorney saying they look forward to the court's decision on the other issues raised in their appeal. live in the newsroom, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you, gloria. new this morning, new data shows just how effective the new covid booster shots are at fighting the new omicron variant. and those shots could be ready as soon as next week. abc7 news reporter ryan curry joins us live from walnut

ability to capture the dominating, circulating strain. also to note, doctors say don't throw away any test if test kits, if even if they're expired . the fda has extended the expiration date when it comes to certain brands. we also know that in some places here in the bay area, home test kits are kind of hard to come by. so keeping on to them as we enter these winter months are going to be handy. we're live in walnut creek, ryan curry, abc seven news. >> thank you, ryan. along with the updated covid shots, doctors say we should all be getting flu shots in the coming weeks. parents will want to start early, especially if you have a kid who is eight and younger who's never had a flu shot because those kids need two doses to be fully vaccinated and older americans are encouraged to ask their doctor about at a high dose vaccine, which can provide extra protection. we talked to a doctor with kaiser permanente who says this year's vaccine appears to be a good match for what is heading our way. >> you have protection against just the two dominant strains of flu. so h3n2 and h1n1, one as

air attack over kyiv just before blinken's arrival. according to the white house, ukraine's four month long major counteroffensive is making, quote, notable progress within the last week. the state department says the trip is a good chance for the us to get a real assessment of the counteroffensive before the united nations general assembly later this month. so far, blinken has already met with ukraine's minister of foreign affairs during his two day trip. he plans on meeting with president zelensky and other top officials there. reggie jobina thank you. >> a note from senator mitch mcconnell's doctor indicates that the senator is not suffering from any new health concerns. the senate minority leader froze up in front of reporters twice in two months. the note from his doctor says that there's no evidence of seizure disorder, parkinson's movement disorder or stroke. mcconnell froze last week during a news conference. his staff has blamed his episodes on lightheadedness. mcconnell suffered a concussion after

falling in march. the doctor's note does not recommend any new treatments, as mcconnell continues to recover from that fall. >> the search for convicted killer deangelo cavalcanti, who escaped from a pennsylvania prison, is entering its seventh day. reports of footprint in the area has led authorities to expand the search zone. the footprints were found near a botanical garden about 40 miles outside of philadelphia. police believe cavalca slipped through an original perimeter and is still somewhere nearby. >> the photos confirm that cavalca has not changed his appearance, but also that he has obtained a backpack. we realized within just a few hours where he was and so he's not had a tremendous amount of time to move a long distance. both the local district attorney and state police have opened investigations into the escape, but officials still haven't said how it happened. >> california families still coping with tragic losses are leading a ballot initiative that would crack down on fentanyl dealers.
