so keep on going. >> let's go coco. and lara is going to be joining us all from the u.s. open coming up. secretary of state antony blinken in ukraine this morning. foreign correspondent britt clennett is on the scene. >> reporter: secretary of state blinken is here. it's his four visit since the war began. he is meeting with his foreign counter part. saying the counter offensive is making good progress. he called it very heartening. blinken is set to meet president zelenskyy as part of this trip which is designed to show america's unwaivering support to ukraine. blinken arrived by train via poland. blinken at a cemetery laying a wreath to honor ukraine's soldiers who lost their lives. blinken is expected to pledge more aid for ukraine. a senior state department official saying new funding will amount to more than $1 billion.

his visit coincides at a critical time on the battlefield as ukraine forces try to break through heavily fortified russian defenses in the south. ukraine is hoping any extra aid will help them in their bid to break russia's land bridge to crimea. russia did fire missiles toward the capital overnight but all were intercepted by air defense. attacks also in greater kyiv and down south where at least one person died. michael? >> all right, britt. thank you for being there. now to the latest in the urgent manhunt for a convicted murderer who escaped from prison. authorities in pennsylvania say there have been new sighings as they widen their perimeter. trevor ault is on the scene with more. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this convicted killer has not disappeared without a trace. in fact, there's been several traces of him, half dozen confirmed sightings. but this search continues to take hold of this community with a massive law enforcement presence, road closures, and this morning some schools are

closed once again. this morning authorities are escalating their efforts in search of the escaped murderer. overnight a swarm of activity from officers, aerial surveillance and canine units responding to possible footprints in the woods. authorities releasing these photos of the most recent confirmed sighting captured on a trail camera. >> he has not changed his appearance but he has obtained backpack, a double sling type pack and hooded sweat shirt. >> reporter: the photos mark the sixth time cavalcante has been spotted. the first time he managed to slip past law enforcement search perimeter. authorities now shifting their search efforts south, still confident they have cavalcante contained. >> that pressure is working. he was not able to get relief and managed to find a place to get out. >> reporter: the investigation

into how cavalcante escaped is on going but the philadelphia enquirer reports a source inside the prison told the paper he climbed onto a roof, ran across it and jumped down to a less secure area with a surveillance blind spot. the source reportedly says a different inmate used the same method to escape in may. officials at the prison did not respond to abc's request for comment and both pennsylvania police and the district attorney's office declined to comment. they've been saying from the beginning they're focusing their efforts on capturing cavalcante. >> he's a bad guy. he needs to be in custody. we're determined to capture him. i'm confident that he will slip up. we're making him move. that's a good thing. >> reporter: and the criminal complaint for the previous inmate who escaped said he was able to access from the exercise yard and he ran out past the security station. but he was captured within a matter of hours. cavalcante, and the search for him, now entering its 7th day. rebecca? >> incredible to see all of

those images and sightings. thank you. we turn to the brutal heat wave sweeping through parts of the country. 88 million americans are on heat alert, from california to massachusetts. and ginger is tracking it all. >> good morning, rebecca. average or even below average for so many folks in the northeast, even great lakes, but now the heat and summer have arrived. as all the kids go back to school, a lot of these schools don't have air conditioning. philadelphia schools, some parts of new jersey, are dismissing early because of that heat you see on the screen. 99 degrees for dulles. that ties their all time september record for three days. they just keep doing it. we'll do another couple of days here in the northeast. we'll end it this weekend. it just keeps building back into texas. dallas will keep breaking records. anybody you see circled in red has a shot at breaking a daily record. going to see phoenix go up to 110 again by the weekend. finally, this just in from capernicus.

that watches the global temperature data. we have seen the hottest summer on record. by far. that graphic shows you 2023 summer sticks out like a sore thumb. we've got el nino. we got a lot of things happening. but of course, human emissions as well. >> thank you very much for that, ginger. definitely has been a hot summer. overseas to the extreme flooding in europe. at least seven people are dead in greece, turkey and bulgaria after the region was hit with torrential rain. marcus moore is tracking it all. >> reporter: this morning parts of greece under water with two feet of rain falling overnight. a storm hammering the area for ten hours. turkey and bulgaria also feeling the effects. there have been at least seven weather related deaths. cars swept away in the central part of the region. in turkey, at least two bodies were discovered near the bulgarian border after a group of people was swept away from a camp site. cars seen trying to navigate through the flooded streets.

severe flooding left people stranded at this airport. stu steverson recording this video of the stairs leading up to his hotel room. >> it was torrential nonstop. >> reporter: this disaster coming after a summer of extreme heat and devastating wild fires in greece, claiming the lives of more than 20 people. first the tragic fires and now this. george, the weather service in greece noting that in the eastern part of the country, they had about 2 1/2 feet of rain in one day. that is the highest level recorded since 2006. more rain is expected today. >> okay, thank you very much, marcus. now to sentencing leader of the proud boys, given 22 years in prison for his role in the january 6th attack on the capitol. it is the longest prison term for any of the january 6th defendants. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is following the story. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. he and his family pleaded for mercy, but the prosecutors argued a message of deterrence

had to be sent for future elections. the former leader of the crowd boys is going to prison for more than two decades. 22 years. judge kelly calling him the ultimate leader of a conspiracy which broke our previously unbroken tradition of peacefully transferring power which is truly one of the most precious things we have as americans. even though he was not present on january 6th, prosecutors describe him as a political terrorist who sought to use force to block the peaceful transfer of power. this now infamous video showing tario meeting with stuart rose and other leaders of the oath keepers in an under ground parking garage in washington, d.c. on the eve of the riot. rose now serving 18 years in prison. prosecutors argue it was a squad of proud boys who first broke through the metal barriers protecting the capitol, saying tario watched the violence

unfold, posting to social media at 2:38 don't leave. the proud boys have long been tied to president trump after he called them out by name when pressed during a debate. >> proud boys. stand back and stand by. >> reporter: the defense tried to portray him as a misguided patriot but the judge had a blunt response. you made that argument to the jury and the jury did not believe it. while he pleaded for leniency calling january 6th a national embarrassment, he never took responsibility for planning the attack. rebecca? >> pierre thomas, thank you. we turn now to the latest on mitch mcconnell's health. the senate minority leader is back in washington after appearing to freeze while answering questions last week. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning. senate minority leader mcconnell is clearly ready to push past questions about his health and age. he largely brushed off that episode he suffered last week in

kentucky when he returned back to capitol hill. the capitol physician releasing a letter saying he did not appear to suffer a stroke, seizure or any movement disorder like parkinson's disease but that letter was vague. it provided no further explanation as to why the 81-year-old republican leader appeared to freeze twice in just over a month. mcconnell has suffered a series of health scare theres the last few month, including a fall in march where he suffered a concussion and fractured rib. a handful of republican senators are raising concerns about transparency. senator rand paul saying some of the statements provided have been inadequate. all of this once again putting the spot light on the age and health of leaders on both sides of the aisle. george? >> okay, rachel. thanks. we'll turn to the impeachment trial playing out in texas. the state attorney general is pleading not guilty of charges of corruption and abusing his office. chief washington correspondent jon karl is tracking that case. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. texas has not seen anything like this in more than a century, a

high stakes impeachment trial of a state wide official. it's more than a fight over the state of the attorney general. it's a battle over the future of the republican party in texas. a stunning fall for texas attorney general kent paxton. the fiery far right lawyer is a champion of donald trump. he led a lawsuit by republican state attorneys general to overturn the 2020 election and he rallied the texas gop around trump. but the texas house suspended paxton from office in may in an overwhelming vote to impeach him. 121-23 with 60 republicans voting in favor. >> mr. paxton should be removed from office because he failed to protect the state. >> reporter: he's now facing 16 articles of impeachment over allegations he abused his office to benefit himself and a major donor who allegedly supported his campaign, paid for his home renovations and even helped him cover up an affair with his mistress.

a state senator herself and his wife angela paxton must attend the proceeding but she can't vote, instead showing support with an embrace. paxton has maintained his innocence. his lawyers pleading not guilty on his behalf and taking a page from the trump play book, arguing the allegations are an attack by the establishment. >> texas is controlled at the legislative level by the republican party. so to have people vote against one of their own shows you the very serious nature of this. >> reporter: the trial is expected to last as long as a month. paxton has tried to dismiss the charges but so far, george, majority of those republicans in the state senate joined with all the democrats to reject that. >> okay jon karl. we'll get the latest on first lady jill biden. she tested positive for covid. she's recovering well. it's raised the possibility that president biden could come down with the virus. selina wang has details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

george. the white house said president biden is feeling good with no symptoms and so far is still testing negative. they try to keep things business as usual holding a ceremony. biden arrived at the ceremony masked quickly removing it. for a few minutes even getting close to that 81-year-old war vet to put that medal around his neck. the president set to host labor leaders at the white house lear today while the first lady is still recovering from mild symptoms at their beach home in delaware. the first lady's press secretary said she was last with her husband monday just hours before she tested positive for covid. the stakes are high for president biden to stay in the clear. he is set to leave tomorrow for india for a major gathering of global leaders. guys? >> all right. thank you very much for that. we're going to turn to the americans who are shining at the u.s. open. coco gauff advancing to the finals and madison keys has a chance to join her tone. ben shelton knocking out frances tiafoe in a thrilling all-american match.

of course lara is there at the tennis center wishing she was playing this morning. good morning, lara. >> got that right. boy was it fun watching coco gauff. she looked very much in charge in her quarter finals match. the fans here at the u.s. open feeling very good about her chances as she heads into the semifinals. overnight the future of american men's tennis was on display. he may only be 20 years old but ben shelton has arrived. overnight ben shelton beating out frances tiafoe and advancing to the u.s. open's semifinals. the close contest making history, as the first time two black men have faced each other in the quarter finals. the 20-year-old shelton now set to face off against number 2 seed player novak djokovic in the semifinals. djokovic beating taylor fritz passing roger federer's record of grand slam semifinal appearances.

>> i'm glad she hasn't surprised me on a course. we're following headlines. secretary blinken in ukraine. it's his fourth visit since the war began. he's expected to meet president zelenskyy as part of the trip which is designed to show america's unwaivering support for ukraine. blinken is expected to pledge more aid for ukraine. a senior state department official says new funding will amount to more than $1 billion. right now united airlines says a glitch caused hundreds of flights to be grounded yesterday was not a cyber security issue. the airline said they experienced a system wide technology issue. this was an incredible major league baseball moment. jose altuve hit a home run in each of the first three innings last night. three for three. the houston astros beat the texas rangers 14-1. so close. let's see if his hot streak can help the astros as the playoffs draw near.

>> he's hitting at the right time. >> he is. we've got a lot more ahead including the cdc warning about the spread of rsv. that is coming up. >> right now a new twist in the alex murdaugh case as his attorneys are asking for a new trial claiming the clerk of court poisoned the jury against him. we're going to speak with them after this report from erielle reshef. good morning. >> reporter: murdaugh is serving two life sentences for murdering his wife and son. now his attorneys filing that 65 page motion saying he was denied a fair trial. the explosive allegations with the potential to cast doubt on his conviction and throw the highly publicized case right back in court. this morning stunning new allegations in the south carolina murder case that gripped the nation. attorneys for alex murdaugh alleging in a new court filing that his trial was tainted by bias. now calling for a new one. >> the clerk of court had improper private communications with jurors. the subject matter of those communications was the credibility of the defense. >> reporter: lawyers for

murdaugh, who was found guilty of fatally shooting his wife and son, accusing the clerk rebecca hill of engaging in self-interested jury tampering, claiming she advised jurors not to believe murdaugh's testimony. >> i would never intentionally do anything to hurt either one of them. >> reporter: murdaugh's attorneys alleging hill pressured the jury to reach a quick and guilty verdict and that she invented a story about a facebook post to remove a juror she believed might not vote guilty. all to secure for herself a book deal and media appearances that would not happen in the event of a mistrial. hill recently publishing that book behind the doors of justice, the murdaugh murders, discussing it with 6 news. >> just by observation i knew the verdict was already pretty sealed when we went to moselle.

there wasn't going to take much. i knew it wasn't going to take long for them to come to a decision about a verdict. >> reporter: the jury taking just under three hours to return a guilty verdict which hill read aloud in court. >> guilty. guilty. guilty. >> reporter: the attorney general thanking her publicly after murdaugh's conviction. >> i want to thank the colleton county court of clerk becky hill and her entire team and staff. i call her becky boots. that's her nickname. but madam clerk, wherever you are tonight -- >> reporter: murdaugh's lawyers say after her book was released this summer they interviewed several jurors who expressed concerns about hill's behavior. hill has not yet responded to the allegations. >> talking about a clerk of the court talking to jurors about the case? the question is gonna be, is it true? did she do this? and does the court believe it's enough to grant a new trial. >> reporter: becky's co-author

said she followed all the guidelines. >> becky will answer any of these allegations truthfully, point by point. she welcomes the tune to do so. >> reporter: and the attorney general has ten days to respond to this motion and says his office is reviewing it. south carolina law requires a new trial if jury tampering is proven for cases that end in a conviction. so lot of eyes on this. >> thanks, erielle. we are joined now by alex murdaugh's attorneys. thank you both for joining us. you said yesterday you first heard these allegations through a whisper campaign. what does that mean, exactly? >> george, soon after the trial actually, as soon as the verdict was rendered, we had gotten some indication from folks in the courtroom that there was something untoward that had happened in the jury room. we didn't know exactly what. we went on a campaign to try to find what. we were met with silence. eventually, though, and we think it was the impetus was becky

hill's book that opened the door to get us information from the jury that we were able to file in court yesterday. >> walk us through these allegations and why you think they require a new trial. >> well, the allegations are that the clerk of court, we have sworn affidavits and interviews, sworn affidavits from two jurors and interviews with other jurors to indicate the clerk of court went into the jury room prior to us presenting our case saying, don't be confused. don't be persuaded. when alex murdaugh was testifying, don't believe him. that, under just every case you can read, is enough to give us a new trial. you don't even have to show they listened to it or that it made any difference. that kind of intrusion into the sanctity of the jury room is san automatic new trial. >> is there any reason you didn't reach out to rebecca?

>> we went to the jurors who gave us the information and we got, you know, sworn testimony from the jurors. we did not reach out to her. we knew that she had a lawyer related to other matters. so we went forward with the information we had to file in court. >> what did alex murdaugh say when you gave him this news? >> i met with alex in person. showed him the affidavits. i can tell you, he's a lawyer, been a lawyer for a long time. he was startled. he was shaking. he was shocked. and he understood the significance of it. he thanked dick and i for beating the roads to get this information. >> why do you think a new trial will make any difference? mr. murdaugh admitted that he lied to the police about his alibi. why could he get exonerated a second time around? >> there's many factors. the first factor is the jury heard two and a half weeks of

the financial fraud even before we got to the murder trial. i think it's important to understand that if you look at the forensics. if you look at the government's case, there's no way forensically he could have committed these murders. george i want to say one thing. that is this. the two jurors that gave us affidavits hired a lawyer joe mccullough before they would talk to us and before they gave us the affidavits. the other jurors out there on a group text and we are reasonably informed that last week when these allegations began to surface, one of the jurors said, quote, who's talking? i'm concerned that these jurors don't understand the import of what's getting ready to happen. they need to get lawyers. they need to understand they may have some exposure. they need to be careful before they start talking to the fbi or sled or even us. >> i'm not following that. you think the jurors violated the law? >> if they could be accused of violating the law.

imagine an app that every text you sent, every photo you took relaying all of that to someone else especially in domestic disputes and abuse situations, digital stalking is on the rise. it can be lurking on your phone and you'd never know it was there. stalkerware. software installed on a device without the consent of the user. >> stalkerware is the entire class of software applications that are designed to be covertly installed on a device in order to get data. >> reporter: passwords, data, it can even see text messages. experts warn it's often installed by an intimate partner as a tool for abuse. >> the main concern is the level of access that it gives to the abuser into the person's life. so many things exist on our devices. if that's compromised, then it's a huge violation of the person's trust an safety.

were re-enlisted the help of an a cyber security person. she was able to install the stalkerware in just a few minutes. >> it was not particularly difficult. i then went and hid all my tracks so it would not be easy for you to know. >> reporter: it was logging every website i visited, every call i placed and key stroke i made. >> yep. >> reporter: the whole thing. not just that i sent a text. >> absolutely, the content of your text. here you are checking in with your producer. right here. >> reporter: man, it's all right there. all the while tracking my location without ever giving me any idea that it was there. i want to see how i would know that it's on here. >> it's not gonna come up. >> reporter: i'm looking through here. i don't see any apps that i don't recognize. is there any legitimate use for these types of softwares that you can think of? >> everything that you can do which would require you to have this kind of access to a device can also be done without having to see the person you're watching. it can be done with consent.

if you find yourself deliberately circumventing consent, you are probably breaking the law and you are definitely doing something unethical. >> reporter: m spy advertises their product as a phone spy app and high lights their invisible mode so no one will know about your actions. we reached out to m spy for comment, but have not heard back. their website does say you must notify the user of the device that they're being monitored. many of the stalkerware apps market themselves as parental monitoring tools, but eva says these should never operate in stealth mode. stalkerware apps are no longer available in the apple store or google play store because they violate policies but are still available online making digital awareness another aspect of abuse for survivors to look out for. now to protect yourself from stalkerware, run an anti-virus scanner on your computer on android phone and use the built in security check to see what

information is being shared. they say don't share pass word and password lock when you step away from your devices. >> not just your own phone. >> this is really sad. experts tell us if you share custody with an ex and it's contentious, you probably need to check your kids' device, too. you should also be aware that removing stalkerware may be something that can be detected by the abuser and could increase abuse and harassment. only attempt to remove it if you believe it is safe to do so. just a complicated issue for people who are already in tough situations. >> it sure is. thank you very much. rebecca. >> thank you, george. we turn to a gma consumer alert. more and more americans are defaulting on their credit cards as rates hit a record high of nearly 21%. senior personal finance reporter jennifer streaks is here. let's talk about this. lot of people are struggling. you have 70 million more credit

cards than prepandemic. trillion dollars in credit card debt. i'm sure people watching right now have student loans that are now taking effect again. what happens? walk people through how late that payment can be and what happens with the credit bureau. >> as soon as you have a 30-day late it can affect your credit. it can be reported. it can drop your credit score as much as 80 points just one single 30 day lated. it can take you from good to fair to bad pretty quickly. >> that 80 points, when people think about what that means, that is the difference between a really good mortgage rate and a really bad mortgage rate. it's the difference between a decent auto loan and not so great auto loan. >> correct. >> it has a big ripple effect on your life. if people are about to do this. i love this advice you have because i think it's so important. pick up the phone. >> definitely. pick up the phone. people want to avoid the negative, obviously. you have to talk to your credit card issuer. let them know what's happening ahead of time.

it's really hard once that late payment occurs to find a resolution. if you're on the phone with the issue ahead of time and you say, i'm struggling financially. maybe my student loan payments have reported. you have an opportunity to find a solution together. >> let's find a solution together. are there any magic words to that conversation that you recommend? >> make sure you're speaking to a manager because they have approval authority. and say, look, my student loans are starting back up. maybe i need to move my credit card payment to the end of the month instead of the beginning of the month. that's when my student loan payment will be due and i want to be able to afford both obligations. just be really honest. >> that is great advice. move it to the end of the month. very useful advice as always, jennifer. great to have you with us. >> thank you. >> now let's head over to ginger. >> philadelphia should have their hottest temperature of the year. here we are in september. today should get to 97. lot of daily records are going to be broken. we are going to see this all start to break apart as the cold

taking a look at a bookstore that expands the world for people with unique abilities. our friends kate and charlie gibson explore their mission. >> on our must listen podcast the bookcase with kate and charlie, in addition to speaking with some of the finest authors of the day, most weeks we also speak with an independent book seller somewhere around the country. >> because independent bookstores are important. that brought us to maplewood, new jersey and a store called words where the story behind the store is just as compelling as the stories on the book shelves. john and emily started this store not just to sell books, but for a larger purpose in mind. you started the bookstore with a purpose. why? >> we had at that time a 12-year-old with autism. we wanted to come up with some sort of vocational program, something for people to give him

something and give others in the community something. >> the idea we came up with was to run this training program with the idea of hoping they could then branch out and get jobs which some people have done or at least get exposure to working. >> to date they have implied and employed more than 150 young people with autism. why do you think book selling lends itself so well to vocational training of this kind? >> a bookstore is like any other store. right? there are things to do that have nothing to do with books. some things that have everything to do with books. we had earlier today two young men putting stickers on the bags so they say our name. you need that for any kind of store. whether it's a bookstore or otherwise. they are putting out the chairs because we have events that have profound autism and still be able to do that. and feel confident. feel like you're doing something that's a value. >> they didn't stop there. they became the first tenants of life town in livingston new jersey. >> life town is a 50,000 square foot warehouse where people can

come to learn how to deal with activities that most of us would take for granted. >> there's a simulated small town a main street, teaching life town visitors how to learn about crosswalks as well as stores where visitors learn to deal with shop keepers. >> often they come in and they are giving money out. they can use these dollars in all the shops in life town. >> among the stores, a movie theater, complete with popcorn for sale. a grocery. i can't help but notice it is well stocked with snacks. >> yes. >> a health center. >> they have the opportunity to go up and down, to sit, see what it is, play with things. play with keys. say, gee, this isn't that scary. >> a beauty salon and of course a satellite words bookstore. >> get to go in stores and learn about each of the different stores and their functions and practice reading skills and math skills and things like that, and get to learn how to shop and buy things in stores.

life town supports people with all kinds of disabilities. people are physical disabilities. they have different challenges than people with autism or other disabilities. >> in life town there's also a gym, an aquatics center. band room. a sensory room where, if overstimulated, kids can come to calm down. those are autism are sensitive to loud noises so each of these rooms is adapted to keep sound levels down. it makes kids comfortable with the sensory experience of going to the movie. >> exactly. what the behavior is and what the expectations are. you go in, pick your seat. >> 2,700 donors contributed more than $18 million to create this life town building four years ago. how many kids have experienced life town? >> to date we've had over 30,000 individuals participate in programs here. next year we'll probably have 30,000, 40,000 individuals here, most from schools and the community at large.

it's really something you need, a unique and incredible experience. we want to make it possible for everybody. >> the important thing is for those who come to life town, there are no outsiders here. there's no behavior unexpected or unaccepted and small victories, learning how to make a doctor appointment, navigate a stop light, how to handle money, are all to be celebrated. while many school groups come through for introductory visit, anyone can come back again and again. and they do. what is the ultimate goal? >> i think it's to normalize them in the community, to make them feel fully integrated and part of the community. >> this is a place where everyone, as you're younger and grow, and as you're older, that you are accepted, that you feel comfortable, that you know how to do things. you feel confidence in your own abilities. that's what this is trying to teach people. >> there's a dual purpose. it gets them more comfortable with the world and the world more comfortable to them. >> exactly.
