and officials in philadelphia saying that schools that don't have air conditioning will be dismissed early the rest of the week. in massachusetts, some schools without air conditioning bringing in fans and stocking up on water to help keep kids cool and hydrated. >> we do need air condition. we do need the fans. i don't know where we can get them from but we need them now. >> reporter: three schools sending students home early in north carolina after ac failed to hold up in the heat. >> it was definitely distracting being in there just sweating. it was hard to learn. >> reporter: young children among the most at risk in this heat. >> children have a different physiology than adults. the very young and very old don't tolerate heat as well. >> reporter: in jacksonville beach, florida, a tragic reminder that heat can kill. a 2-year-old child discovered left in a vehicle. police believe her death is heat related. so, so sad. for as preventible as these heat related deaths can be, we've proved over the last 30 years that is the number one weather related killer.

you can be sure a heat wave this intense, this late in the season, human induced climb change is playing a big role. rebecca? >> rob, thank you. people have to be safe out there. we appreciate it. ginger has more on this heat wave and hurricane lee. ginger is track all of it. good morning, ginger. >> good morning. not only is this a shock to the system after such an average or even below average summer in parts of the northeast, but we've now seen the first 100 degree temperature in september in baltimore since 1973. we've done this in a lot of places. washington dulles had their all time hottest september tempature on record at 100. we will see more of it at least today. then in the northeast it starts to break up even though it's still muggy this weekend. but this ridge builds. texas gonna keep breaking records. phoenix will, by this weekend, break their record of number of 110 plus degree days. just no break for them. then we've got to talk about hurricane lee. it is way out in the atlantic.

confidence is much higher that it should miss the leeward islands as it rapidly intensifies this weekend to a cat 4. part of that's because the water temperatures are so above normal. three to four degrees above normal where it sits now. i does start to enter cooler water. on top of that you've got this high pressure system that will start to allow it to come closer to the east coast. that's by next mid week. this trough and that high, the positions of them matter greatly as to where it ends up making landfall potentially up in canada by the time it's all said and done. that would be by next weekend. we'll get into all of it, michael. >> thank you for bringing that to us. we're going to turn to the hunt for the convicted killer still on the run after escaping prison last week. newly released surveillance video shows him scaling a wall right before he broke out. trevor ault is on the scene in pennsylvania this morning. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this is still a very urgent search for an extremely dangerous man. behind me, you see this state trooper.

he's checking the back seat and trunk of every single vehicle that's pulling out of the search perimeter. this morning we have a look at this pretty stunning video of this convict climbing the wall sideways to get to the roof and get out. maybe the most shocking part is this already happened once before. this is the moment convicted killer cavalcante escaped the chester county prison scaling the wall sideways in a matter of seconds to get to the roof and take off. >> we believed the security measures were sufficient, they have proven otherwise. >> reporter: authorities released the video wednesday after days of scrutiny. they say the escape began last thursday at 8:51 a.m. with cavalcante climbing the wall from the exercise yard. it wasn't until 9:45 a.m., nearly an hour later, that prison officials noticed he was gone. it took another 16 minutes, until 10:01 to sound the escaped inmate alarm and notify 911. >> when you scale a wall and can elude capture or avoid the

corrections officers, that's got me scratching my head. that warden there needs to take a hard look at what went on there. >> reporter: the acting warden confirmed a different inmated escaped in a nearly identical fashion in may. in response the prison installed razor wire on the roof saying outside security consultants told them that would secure the exercise yard. but they say cavalcante simply climbed through the wire on his way out and a tower guard who was supposed to be watching the inmates never saw it happen. >> we thought we took appropriate measures to prevent that with the razor wire. we only focused on the physical infrastructure and not necessarily human element. >> reporter: cavalcante was convicted of murdering his girlfriend in broad day light. since his escape, he's been seen half dozen times including on these trail camera photos monday night. >> everybody is feeling disbelief that he has yet to be captured. >> reporter: ryan drummond said he saw the convict steal food from inside his house. believing cavalcante entered through an unlocked door.

>> i saw him come out of the kitchen into the living room, back to that french door and out the deck. by that time i grabbed the phone. my wife was telling 911, he's in our house, or just left. >> reporter: along with dense woods, sources tell abc news the intense heat is hindering the search making it harder to track body temperature signals from helicopters. now a week into their efforts, authorities remain determined to find cavalcante and believe he is still within their perimeter. the state attorney general's office has now taken over the investigation into how this escape occurred. that observation tower guard who didn't see it happen or report it is now on administrative leave. all of this happened one day after the acting warding took over the job. george? >> what a story, trevor. thanks. >> the latest on hunter biden. special counsel saying he plans to indict the president's son on a gun charge. this happens after a plea deal

fell apart over the summer. pierre thomas has the story. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning. his plea deal in tatters, hunter biden is facing the prospect of indictment and likely headed to trial. the president's son will likely be indicted on a felony gun charge. special counsel david weiss blunt warning came in a new court filing involving hunter biden's alleged illegal purchase of a gun in delaware when he was addicted to drugs. that gun charge was supposed to go away as part of a plea deal. as part of the deal, the president's son would plead guilty to tax crimes. but the deal unravelled in late july and weeks later attorney general merrick garland naming weiss special counsel in the case. >> upon considering his request as well as the circumstances relating to this matter, i have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel.

>> reporter: the same day weiss made it clear the parties were no longer in plea negotiations, telling the court the parties are at an impasse and the government now believes the case will not resolve short of a trial. republicans have sought to use hunter biden's legal woes to weaken his father politically. >> this has been a corrupt process for five years now. the evidence was laid out. it was available. more and more evidence will surface. more and more corruption than federal law enforcement, department of justice has released to hunter. >> reporter: president biden standing by his son, but pointedly refusing to engage on the case. >> i have no comment on any investigation that's going on. that's up to the justice department. that's all i have to say. >> reporter: hunter biden's attorneys are preparing to fight saying in a statement last night prosecutors should honor a deal they signed to forego the gun charge as long as biden stays off of drugs and out of serious legal trouble.

george? >> thanks. latest on donald trump's conspiracy indictment in georgia. a judge denied a request by two ex-trump lawyers to separate their cases. aaron katersky has the details. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. with the clock ticking towards the first trial date next month the judge requesting the request for two lawyers charged with conspireing to keep trump in office. instead ruling sydney powell and kenneth chesboro would stand trial together october 23rd. prosecutors said they want to put all 19 alleged co-conspirators on trial at once. the judge said he was skeptical that could happen but would decide after another hearing one week from today. whenever the trial starts, prosecutors estimate they could last four months and include testimony from more than 150 witnesses. trump has been asked if he would testify in georgia or in his three other criminal trials and he claims he would, though, george, his lawyers may have a different expectation. michael? >> all right. i think they will, aaron. thank you very much. now to the deadly flooding in

greece. another day of record rainfall as emergency services received more than 2,000 calls for help and rescued hundreds of people. marcus moore is tracking it all. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: michael, good morning. this extreme and deadly flooding comes after three days of heavy rainfall across parts of europe. this was the scene in athens. three people trying to cross a street there. the high water rushing by. government official saying that what they have been seeing is unprecedented. several feet of rain falling in one day. also a water spout forming off the coast of the islands. an unimaginable situation with high water sweeping away cars and damaging homes and businesses in the region. the weather is expected to pass tonight which will bring a much needed break to so many who were enduring these extreme conditions. michael? >> definitely much needed, marcus. thank you for that. now to the latest on the war in ukraine. russia claims it shot down drones near military headquarters. this as a missile hit a crowded market place in ukraine, killing at least 16 people.

let's get right to our foreign correspondent britt clennett who is at the wreckage. good morning, britt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. russia said it shot down another wave of drone attacks near moscow, home to its military headquarters. video capturing the powerful explosion. a local official saying one person was injured and buildings damaged. and here where a missile hit a busy marketplace, 16 people are dead including a child. dozens are injured. you can see the destruction left behind. this town has been shelled before. people here are particularly shocked this time because it was carried out in broad day light in the center of town during rush hour as people were simply shopping. the attack coming during a visit to ukraine by antony blinken who met president zelenskyy and pledged more aid to ukraine and hailed their progress in the counter offensive. today blinken visited a boarded up facility where he met soldiers and was shown equipment provided by the u.s.

rebecca? >> such a brazen attack. thank you for being there amid that wreckage to bring us the story from ukraine. we turn now to federal regulators taking steps to recall some 50 million air bags that could injure or kill people. they say it's happened before. our transportation correspondent gio benitez is here with more. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, rebecca. good morning. this is so concerning that the highway traffic safety administration is calling for a recall. these air bags are used in about 50 million cars, from some of the biggest automakers. look at that right there. half of them on the roads right now from bmw to tesla. at least 7 people were injured, one killed after air bags ruptured. one of the makers rejected the recall saying they lack evidence of a defect. here's what nhtsa are telling us. the parts may rupture causing metal debris to be forcefully

quarterback jalen hurts is making a big difference helping level the playing field for young women. it's all coming up. right now the search for a cruise passenger who vanished hours before the ship arrived back in miami. whit johnson has the story. good morning, whit. >> reporter: george, good morning. what happened to kevin mcgrath on that carnival cruise ship remains a mystery after an extensive search including hundreds of square miles of open water the coast guard is suspending its role in the case. and now police are asking for the public's help. this morning the search growing more desperate for 26-year-old kevin mcgrath after he vanished from a carnival cruise ship more than three days ago. >> we have no answers. my family and i have no answer. no one just vanishes into thin air. where's my brother? >> reporter: this video shows mcgrath dancing on the carnival conquest the saturday before he went missing on a family trip celebrating his father's 60th birthday. miami dade police say mcgrath's brother last saw him at his cabin around 2 a.m. monday. mcgrath was supposed to meet family members for breakfast before disembarking in miami, but he never showed up. >> i was like, you know, maybe

he's sleeping somewhere. hours went by and we hear nothing. i'm like, this is serious. >> reporter: carnival saying the guest was not located on board despite an extensive search, and that the u.s. coast guard was contacted and completed a helicopter search of the water in the general vicinity. the coast guard saying they covered nearly 3,300 square nautical miles before suspending their search wednesday. police also checking security cameras. it gave no indication that mcgrath may have gone overboard. the special victims bureau sharing this missing persons poster asking anyone with information to contact them. >> we love you kevin and we want you to come home, plain and simple. i know someone saw something, heard something. even if you think it's something small, come forward. just anything will help. anything will help at this moment because we're sitting here with no answers. >> reporter: and kevin's sister

for a full week. we've seen some state troopers stopping vehicles leaving the search area to check their trunk and back seat. as that search continued, you mentioned the video. we're getting a look at how cavalcante managed to escape, by climbing sideways up the walls of the exercise yard at chester county prison. the acting warden says this is nearly identical to how a previous inmate escaped in may. he says they even added razor wire to the roof to try to prevent this from happening again. they say cavalcante simply climbed through the wire and observation tower guard who was supposed to be watching the inmates never saw it and never reported it. by the time they realized he was missing, cavalcante had nearly an hour head start. now seven days in since then, authorities say there has been more than half dozen credible sightings, but he continues to slip through their grasp. rebecca? >> unbelievable, a full week on the run. okay, trevor. thank you. we turn to an abc news exclusive. snap chat revealing they're putting new safe guards in place to help protect teens.

erielle reshef is here with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you guys. those features go live after gma today. the company said the new tools build on important protections now in place. the goal is to enhance safe guards for 13-17-year-old snap chatters against potential dangers online. this morning snap chat announcing it will be unveiling new tools, hoping to protect teens on its app by limiting potentially risky or unwanted interactions encouraging teens to only have contact with people who they know in real life by adding a popup warning if they are contacted by someone outside of their friend group adding resources to help the company find and remove accounts promoting content that it considers unsuitable for kids. and introducing a strike system to help eliminate content deemed inappropriate and ban accounts trying to skirt the app rules. >> there's no silver bullet to online safety. it's really important for parents to talk to their kids about being safe online and what that means.

time for our gma cover story. a study looks at the increase of blood clots while taking pain pills. what does it tell us? >> huge study done in denmark just published in the british medical journal looking at what we call a class effect between two known huge classes of medications. hormonal contraception and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain killers. we know they both come with an increase clotting risk. what wasn't known is amongst women who take both of them together what that risk was. take a look. the risk was stratified. highest risk combined estrogen patch. high dose estrogen. higher dose estrogen containing pills. what we call third generation or fourth generation progestins and anti-androgens. that's the high risk. then they went to medium and low risk categories amongst those.

medium risk categories, other combined birthed control pills, the kind of pills most women would be on. a depro high dose progesteron and progestin pills and then progestin containing interuterine devices. very interesting based on the type of hormone. >> the idea of clotting is not new. we talked about it. specifically what birth controls are we talking about here in this study? >> again, it really depends. when you talk about hormonal contraception, the list i gave is pretty extensive. if you're on any type of hormone for contraception, you want to ask your gynecologist or health

care provider. in terms of the nonsteroidals, which could be prescription or over the counter. we're talk about things like ibuprofen, naproxen. those things also with associated risk when taken for a week. >> so no specific makers? >> correct. >> got it. >> as far as pain relievers go, are there any that have a higher risk for clotting? >> yeah. i think those nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. not talking about things like acetaminiphin. still in about 2 in 10,000 which is incredibly low, guys. as we say in gynecology, the risk of a clot in pregnancy way higher than this. but this is personal for me. my daughter had a clot on the pill and nonsteroidal. it's just about awareness. four words, talk to your doctor. >> such important awareness. dr. ashton, thank you. >> you bet. >> we turn to big music news. rolling stones gather no moss. 20 years nearly since their last original album was released, mick jagger and the gang are
